Mark 15

Mark 15:1-15---Jesus is delivered into the hands of Pilate,

Mark 15:16-32---Jesus is mocked, crucified, and murdered by His tormentors,

Mark 15:33-47---Jesus is buried, and His death impacts those around Him.

Will we choose to truly comprehend the suffering Jesus underwent for us, and will we realize His Light will overpower the sin and darkness in our lives?

We must stand up for what is right. We know the ways of this world are the most popular ways, but not the right ways. As servants of Jesus, we must be the small sliver of light that penetrates the darkness behind the door.

Mark’s Reflection on Psalm 22

MARK 15:20,24

“And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.”

PSALM 22:7, 14, 16-18

"All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads...I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me...Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for them.”

Light and Value

“Why We Are Happiest When the Sun Is Out”

Ian Sample

“Light also triggers changes in the brain that make us feel more cheery.  Evidence is emerging that light pushes up levels of serotonin and noradrenaline, two key feel-good chemicals. Physiological changes are just part of the story. Light has been associated with good, and dark with bad. So, there is clearly a psychological influence."

 “Color, Value, and Hue”

Charlotte Jirousek

“Value is defined as the relative lightness or darkness of a color.”

Darkness—Tim Keller

"Many people have proposed a natural cause for this event--an eclipse, for instance. But a solar eclipse does not create absolute darkness for more than a few minutes. Further, a solar eclipse can't happen during the time of a full moon, and Passover is always celebrated at a full moon. Other people have suggested that the cause was a desert windstorm of the type that can kick up enough sand that can obscure the sun for days at a time. But Passover falls in the wet season, so this darkness couldn't have come from a windstorm. This was a supernatural darkness."

God’s Displeasure

ISAIAH 13:9-10

"For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in its going forth, and the moon shall not cause its light to shine.”

EXODUS 10:21-23

"And Jehovah said unto Moses, ‘Stretch out thy hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days; they saw not one another, neither rose any one from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.’”

Psalm 84:11-12

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.”

Jesus died for each one of us. He suffered and was crucified so that He could take on our sins and face separation from God so that we don’t have to. He did it all for us. He gave Himself so that we can be forgiven.

The Bible Knowledge CommentaryEdited by Walvoord and Zuck

“Mark mentioned the women as eyewitnesses of the Crucifixion in anticipation of their eyewitness role at Jesus’ burial and His resurrection. Their devotion surpassed that of the 11 disciples who had deserted Him. Mark may have intended these words as an encouragement to faithful discipleship among women in the church at Rome.”

Jesus’ death makes all things sinful and dark fleeting. We know with His death, the Light surfaces and shines on.

Tim Keller, King’s Cross

“And when you suffer, you may be completely in the dark about the reason for your own suffering. It may seem as senseless to you as Jesus’ suffering seemed to the disciples. But the cross tells you what the reason isn’t. It can’t be that God doesn’t love you; it can’t be that He has no plan for you. It can’t be that he has abandoned you. Jesus was abandoned, and paid for our sins, so that God the Father would never abandon you. The cross proves that he loves you and understands what it means to suffer. It also demonstrates that God can be working in your life even when it seems like there is no rhyme or reason to what is happening.”

The Light Shines Through… We must follow Jesus and stand up for what

we know is right, even if we know it is hard. Certainly, Jesus did not want to endure His agonizing death, but He knew He had to.

God is always with us. Because of Jesus’ death, we don’t have to fear being distanced from God. Jesus did it for us.

Sin and darkness can be wiped away. All we must do is follow Jesus and try to be like Him.
