FROM THE HEADMASTER

Great Ambassadors for BMGS

Last week I received a letter from Mr Toshio Takase, the Principal of Yamada Senior High School,

Nagoya, Japan, praising the standard of behaviour of our students whilst visiting his school. I have

also received emails and verbal comments from parents about the value of such experiences for

their child. Our students have returned with many stories of their time in Japan, from being

immersed in a different culture to seeing the many beautiful gardens and temples, to savouring the

taste of Japanese food, in particular, green tea ice cream, and the emotional visit to the Hiroshima

Peace Museum which was a very poignant experience for all. The time spent renewing friendships

with students at Yamada High School, especially the warm welcome received, was also a particular

highlight. Thank you to our staff Mrs Yukie Evans, Mr Tristan Forsyth, Miss Danie Evans and Mr Scott

Bell for accompanying the students on the trip and ensuring it was such a successful and

memorable adventure.

Commendations to our students for the way they conducted themselves, for their commitment to

their School and for having represented the School so admirably. Once again, our students have

proved themselves to be excellent ambassadors for BMGS!

HSC Exams Underway

This week our Year 12 students commenced their HSC examinations with two English papers. A

number also sat exams in Music, PDHPE, Engineering Studies, Japanese Extension and some will sit

exams in Modern History and Earth and Environmental Science at the end of the week. Quite a

number of our students have been at school seeking assistance from their teachers over the course

of the past week.

During the holidays quite a number were in studying in the Library Resources Centre or attending

revision lessons with their teachers. These extra opportunities to consolidate key understandings

and skills have been most appreciated by the students. Thank you to the staff, as always, for going

above and beyond for the benefit of our students.

Thank you to Mr Dane for conducting the HSC Chapel Service on Monday morning before the first

English paper – a time of prayer and worship for Year 12 in anticipation of the HSC examinations.

Page 2: Blue Mountains Grammar School - bmgs.nsw.edu.au · PDF fileIn all the different areas of our lives, we tend to remember the ... be aware that what we can offer as a school to support

Thank you also to Mrs Learne Brischetto who thoughtfully brought in her small dogs from PAWS Pet

Therapy prior to the first HSC English examination as a gesture of her own thanks to BMGS for the

help offered to her son Dominic. This provided a relaxing distraction to the students whilst waiting

outside Cuff Hall. I also thank our Cru students who distributed tea, coffee, fruit and lollies at the

end of the first English paper.

These generous gestures of care and support were very much appreciated by our Year 12 students.

E-Safety Parent Workshop

An E-Safety Parent Workshop is being organised by the Blue Mountains Police Youth Liaison Officer,

Ms Michelle Jancso. It will be presented by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner on Monday

evening, 27th November from 5.30pm – 6.30pm in the Blaxland High School Auditorium.

The presentation will provide an overview of how young people use technology and the risks to which

they may be exposed. Participants will be given practical information to support conversations and

safety measures for today’s youth. Strategies for the safe use of the internet will be explained and

useful links to the Office’s eSafety resources provided.

The workshop is a great opportunity for parents in our community to gain more knowledge and

understanding on how to manage their child's online behaviour, their access and time spent online.

There will be information on popular social media apps such as SnapChat, Instagram, Musicaly, and

Facebook as well as privacy and security settings. The event is FREE.

Attendees need to RSVP by

17th November, 2017 to

Senior Constable Michelle

Jancso on 4751 0268.

A flyer advertising this event

appears right. Details are also

available on the School’s

Facebook page.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN

So the Exam period is in full swing, not only with the beginning of the HSC, but also with the various

yearly exams. Our students have invested effort in study and energy in understanding. Indeed, our

HSC students are about to bring their schooling to fruition through these exams in the hopes of

securing the results that will set them on their path into a fulfilling future.

While this can be a challenging time for some, perhaps it can serve as a reminder that we all need to

be willing to examine our direction, our understanding and our presuppositions. The Bible regularly

encourages to consider how our lives measure up to God’s standards, how well our direction aligns

with God’s good plan for our lives. Whether we are fulfilling the future that we have been given.

It’s encouraging that God is so patient with us. When we fail, God is constant in restoring us and

consistent in helping us find His way. God is loving and just; He doesn’t lie in wait hoping to catch us

in our sins. He actively pursues us to bring us into the Joy of His salvation. No wonder He encourages

us to examine ourselves so that we don’t miss out on the fullness of life He offers.

“Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don’t drift along taking everything for

granted. Give yourselves regular check-ups. You need first hand evidence, not mere hearsay, that

Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it” (2 Corinthians 13:5-6).

FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD – HEAD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

Important dates

Year 9 Yearly Examinations – Wednesday, 25th October – Friday, 27th October

Year 10 Yearly Examinations – Monday, 30th October – Friday, 3rd November

Year 10 Senior Preparation Program – Monday, 13th November – Friday, 24th November

Finishing the year on a strong note

In all the different areas of our lives, we tend to remember the first things and last things we see or

hear in a given situation, circumstance or event. That is one reason why it is important to start and

finish your school year strongly. Even as the school year begins the final phases, you can still develop

good habits, realise better results, and go into the summer with positive momentum. This applies to

both students and teachers. Examinations are held quite early in Term 4 so that the final unit of

learning for each course has enough time to be in-depth and meaningful. They are certainly not

“fillers”! Final units for the year in the Senior School will be assessed in a range of ways.

Year 10 Students

Year 10 students have their examination timetable for their end of year examinations (it is also

attached to the Year 10 page of the Portal). Please discuss revision strategies and plans with your

Tutor. Students are strongly advised to complete these in preparation for their examinations.

Students in Year 10 are given the privilege of not attending school when they do not have an

Page 4: Blue Mountains Grammar School - bmgs.nsw.edu.au · PDF fileIn all the different areas of our lives, we tend to remember the ... be aware that what we can offer as a school to support

examination – however if parents wish their child to attend school for all of the examination block –

please contact the Teaching and Learning office and let us know.

The Senior Preparation Program timetable will soon be available for students. Students will be

receiving their Year 10 examinations back, completing some sessions on study techniques, student

leadership and relaxation methods. After this they will form their Year 11, 2018 classes for four days

of introductory sessions in the subjects they have chosen for the Preliminary courses. These

introductory sessions will be run by the current Year 10 teachers where possible – therefore the

classes may not be taken by the teachers who are assigned for 2018. Student attendance during

these two weeks is compulsory and normal procedures will be followed if students do not attend.

Year 11 Students – Disability Provisions for the HSC Examinations

NESA has a program to help students with practical support in their Higher School Certificate

examinations. Disability provisions in the HSC are practical arrangements designed to help students

who couldn't otherwise make a fair attempt to show what they know in an exam room.

The provisions granted are solely determined by how the student’s exam performance is affected.

Students may need provisions for:

a permanent condition, such as diabetes or reading difficulty

a temporary condition, such as a broken arm, or

an intermittent condition, such as back pain when sitting for long periods.

Provisions may include large-print papers, use of a reader and/or writer, extra time or rest breaks.

It is not embarrassing to apply for or use provisions. More than 5,000 HSC students apply for

provisions each year. Provisions help students to show the markers what they know and can do.

To apply for provisions, the School submits an online application to NESA. This application states

which provisions the student is requesting and includes recent evidence. Evidence may include

medical reports, reading results, spelling results, writing samples and teacher comments.

For more information see http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/disability-provisions/students-and-

parents.html.

If your child currently receives provisions to support them in their studies, now is the time to obtain

new specialists’ reports and documentation. It must be dated no earlier than Term 4, 2017. Please

be aware that what we can offer as a school to support your child is more flexible than what may

happen with your NESA application for their HSC examinations.

If you wish to find out more about provisions please contact our Learning Enrichment teacher, Mrs

Alicia Michielsen, by emailing [email protected]

Gondwana

Congratulations to Emily Ampt (Year 11) who has been accepted into the Gondwana Chorale. This

SATB choir is the most prestigious of the Gondwana ensembles and applicants usually have to be 17

years of age to audition. Emily has also auditioned for the National Chamber Orchestra and is on

their reserve list, which is a wonderful accomplishment.

Evelyn Archer (Year 7) and Thomas Archer (Year 5) have successfully auditioned for the Gondwana

National Choral School, which occurs during the school holidays in January, 2018.

Gondwana Choirs is the leader in Australian choral performance, shaping the Australian sound

through the creation and presentation of innovative new work, and providing opportunities to all

talented young Australians through world-class training by leading artists. Gondwana Choirs

comprises the most accomplished choral groups of young people in Australia. Founded by Artistic

Director Lyn Williams OAM as Sydney Children’s Choir in 1989, the organisation has grown to include

Gondwana National Choirs and Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choirs. The organisation has

commissioned over 150 works by leading Australian composers and performs a significant number

of Australian compositions each year nationally and internationally.

Student Achievements

Miriam Cooney (Year 10) has been awarded her A Mus A (Associate Diploma) on the Oboe. This is a

wonderful achievement and we extend our congratulations to Miriam.

Congratulations also to Nicholas Mayrhofer (Year 9) who gained an A (Honours) pass in his 8th grade

practical Piano exam recently and to Abraham Darley (Year 11) who gained 88% in his 4th Grade

Water in the Environment

Last week Year 7 students were taken into the field on Friday by a team of

five experts, assembled by the Blue Mountains City Council. It was perfect

weather for a day outdoors and the excursion was very well received.

Favourite elements of the day were the identification of water bugs, the

reflective time in the water cave and interacting with the experts.

Weekly Quiz

The answer to last week’s question was the year 1994. Congratulations to

Benjamin Holtmann (Year 9). This week we have the second ‘history of BMGS’

question, asking for the name of the founding Headmaster. The competition closes next Tuesday.

Students did not sit back meekly and only go on easy courses within their comfort zone, but often

exercised some positive risk-taking and tried some of the more difficult red and black courses that

the Centre has on offer. As you can see by our pictures, all students had a great day out.

FROM THE VISUAL ARTS AND DESIGN DEPARTMENTS

The Annual Dr. Ken Marshall Art & Design Award

The Annual Art and Design Award and Prizegiving night sponsored by Dr Ken Marshall will be held on

10th November in the Art and Design Foyer from 7:00pm - 9:00pm.

This exhibition showcases the amazing work completed by Art and Design students, from junior

classes to the Major Works and Design Projects submitted for the HSC. Exhibits include paintings,

drawings, sculpture, photography, timber projects, jewellery, graphic design, food technology,

multimedia and architectural projects.

The event offers an ideal opportunity for parents from the Junior and Preparatory Schools to see the

creative work that their children will undertake in the Senior School, as well as some highly

sophisticated and varied HSC works. Above all, the exhibition is a celebration of the profound

creativity and talent evident in students of all ages at BMGS.

To assist with preparation, students are welcome to volunteer their time, which will be recorded as

service hours over the coming weeks. On the night, we kindly request that families of Senior School

students provide a plate of food. Details for this will be provided shortly.

All Visual Arts and Design students are expected to attend this event. The dress code is full School

uniform with blazer.

We hope to see you at what is always a wonderful event.

JAPAN TOUR

During the September school break, 25

students and five members of staff visited

Japan for twelve days. The aim of the tour was

to provide our Japanese language students the

opportunity to practise their Japanese as well as

immersing them in Japanese culture and local

situations that would require them to put their

studies into action.

For our non-Language students, it was an

opportunity to visit a place that many of them held a special

affinity for through a love of Japanese popular culture.

Starting in Tokyo meant that students were quickly introduced

to the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s most densely

populated cities. Visits to Akihabara, Disney Land, The

Mirakan Science Museum to see ASIMO and Studio Ghibli

were among the students’ highlights of this portion of the

tour.

Moving onto the ‘traditional Japanese’ cities of Kyoto and

Nara saw the tourists develop an appreciation for temples,

traditional food, along with the arts and crafts of old Japan.

We also visited Yamada High School in Nagoya to visit our

host siblings from their visit to BMGS last term. For many

students, this was an opportunity to re-unite with friends and

to develop new relationships that we hope they pursue into

the future. As a school, we look forward to continuing this

relationship over the coming years.

The final stage of the tour brought us to Hiroshima where

students had the opportunity to reflect on the concept of

peace and its place in the world. Visiting the Peace Museum

is always challenging for most tourists, as it is quite

confronting and

sobering, but our

students handled

themselves with

dignity and

maturity and

were a credit to

the School and

their families.

I wish to thank

the four members of staff who accompanied me on the trip

(Mr Bell, Mrs Evans, Mrs Huston and Miss Evans) for your

support and laughs. Thank you as well to all the parents for

your support and trust.

The planning phase of the 2019 tour will soon start. Keep

your eye on the noticeboards if you will be in Years 9 to 11 in

2019 and are interested in joining our next tour.

MASSIVE MURRAY PADDLE (MMP)

The Massive Murray Paddle (MMP) is an amazing, annual five-day

outdoor education adventure and paddling race on the Murray River that aims to ‘connect people,

river and country’. It is a charity event that raises funds to assist local community-driven programs.

Each year, since 1968, hundreds of individual kayakers, relay teams, schools and community groups

from around Australia have paddled the Murray River, from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill, covering a

distance of 404km over five days.

This year the event will be held from 20th to 24th November (inclusive).

BMGS has entered teams in the event since 2013. This year, the School has again registered a team

of 20 students and 20 parents.

There are very limited places still available so please talk to your son or daughter about whether you

would like to be part of the action this year!

BMGS participation in the MMP is parent driven with strong support from the School, including the

participation of at least one supervising teacher.

The majority of our paddlers have no experience, but everyone has fun and we all learn a lot about

ourselves, and each other, and raise some very worthwhile funds for community projects along the

way.

Each day on the river is divided into four legs. A normal day’s kayaking for a relay paddler is one leg

of 20-30 km. It takes approx. two to three hours to complete each leg (depending on how fast the

river is flowing, and how fast the crew are paddling). It is a challenge but not impossible, even for a

novice! We paddle past tall river red gums, quiet billabongs and sweeping bends, with flocks of

screeching cockatoos for company. Each evening, we camp at beautiful riverside locations along the

way.

for a successful season ahead.

This weekend all teams started their round competition. Please ensure that your son/daughter has

returned their bus pickup form to their relevant MIC prior to their first away game.

Once again everybody is encouraged to join Team App as this will be the key form of communication

as the season progresses.

With home games starting this weekend, the canteen roster is now being filled via the Trybooking

system. The link to this for Term 4 is: https://www.trybooking.com/326233

All home game times have been placed on Team App for this term so if you check your child’s playing

Basketball Results - Term 4 Round 1

Our first round for the Basketball season was certainly a memorable one.

I was treated to some fabulous Basketball from the boys on the Friday night. The boys showed great

persistence and improved over the course of the game as they played more experienced teams.

Highlights included a very impressive three-point shot and some exceptional lay-ups. On Saturday I

watched and coached our first round, of what I hope will be many, ‘Mixed’ teams. For many of the

children, this was their first game of Basketball and they didn’t disappoint. The umpires were very

considerate as all the teams adjusted to the rules of basketball. The children played their hearts out

and by the end of the games I heard lots of them say they had a lot of fun, which is what it’s all

about. By midday I worked the bench for the 5/6 Girls’ White team.

The girls played a team of developing players. Their coach, Mr. Dennis Starmans, to is be

commended, as he made sure the girls were still challenged by enforcing plays such as having to

pass the ball five times before shooting to try and even out the game. The girls showed great

sportsmanship and fairness throughout the game. Mrs Roberson watched the 5/6 Girls’ Red team

play and said they showed great determination and spirit throughout their game. Mrs. Roberson also

said the girls improved immensely as they got used to each other.

Page 13: Blue Mountains Grammar School - bmgs.nsw.edu.au · PDF fileIn all the different areas of our lives, we tend to remember the ... be aware that what we can offer as a school to support

I would like to say a big thank you to our new coaches for the upcoming season and to Mrs. Megan

FROM THE HEAD OF THE PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Our Stage 1 and 2 classes will travel to Elizabeth Farm in Week 4 as part of the ‘Sydney Living

Museum’ experience. Both excursions will complement the History units studied this year, providing

the opportunity to relive our Colonial past through hands on experiences.

A timely reminder from the Cancer Council NSW:

The simplest way to be a good role model!

Researchers, parents and teachers know that children imitate adult behaviour. That’s why role

modelling sun protection is so important!

How to be a good role model:

Slip on clothing which covers as much skin as possible.

Slop on 30+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen.

Slap on a broad-brimmed, legionnaires or bucket hat.

Slide on some wrap-around sunglasses.

Seek shade when outdoors.

Don’t forget – when the UV reaches 3, we protect against UV. You and your children can check the

UV level together by downloading the SunSmart app!
