ABOUGHAZALE=SBLUEGRASS BASE BEGINS
TO BEAR FRUIT
by Jessica Martini
LEXINGTON, KY - When Oussama Aboughazale purchased the
former Belvedere Farm in Paris, Kentucky, four years ago, he
immediately began building a broodmare band for the 235-acre
property. Those initial investments are now finding success both
in the sales ring--where the operation was represented by its
first $1-million yearling in 2019--and on the racetrack where
Princess Noor (Not This Time), bred by Aboughazale=s
International Equities Holding, recently won the GI Del Mar
Debutante.
AI loved Kentucky from the first time I came here more than 20
years ago,@ Aboughazale, born in Jerusalem and previously
based in Chile, said of the decision to begin operations in the
Bluegrass. AI fell in love with it. I said, >I want to have the
Kentucky passport.=@
With the help of bloodstock manager Frances Relihan and farm
manager Jody Alexander, Aboughazale purchased 11 mares at
the 2017 Keeneland January sale and a further five mares at that
year=s Keeneland November sale. The plan, according to
Aboughazale, was to find quality that was just under the radar.
AI always told Frances, >Frances look for me, not for Angelina
Jolie, but for the sisters and cousins of Angelina Jolie,@ he
explained with a chuckle. Cont. p3
FORMER ZAYAT FINANCIAL ADVISOR
AMONG CREDITORS TRYING TO 'FORCE'
STABLE'S BANKRUPTCYby T.D. Thornton
Ahmed Zayat's former financial advisor is among the entities
now initiating an "involuntary bankruptcy" petition against
Zayat's family-owned racing stable. This Sept. 14 court action
comes six days after the allegedly insolvent Triple
Crown-winning breeder and owner voluntarily filed for his own
personal Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.
Although once prevalent, involuntary bankruptcy proceedings
are now relatively uncommon in United States courts.Cont. p6

Aboughazale's Bluegrass Base cont. from p1 ABecause Angelina Jolies will be very expensive. But the sisters
and the cousins will have the same genes and bloodlines.@
Relihan added, AWe feel that buying a good physical is one of
the most important things we can do. And then we gauge from
there to see how much pedigree we can afford with that.@
Among the mares purchased that January was Brushwork
(Discreet Cat), who was in foal to Kitten=s Joy and sold for
$150,000. Shadwell Estate Co. bought the mare=s Kitten=s Joy
colt for $750,000 in September 2018.
At the same auction, International Equities Holding purchased
graded stakes winner Delightful Joy (Tapit) for $700,000. The
mare=s first foal, a filly by War Front, sold to Shadwell for
$1 million at last year=s Keeneland September sale.
The group of mares purchased in November 2017 included
Sheza Smoke Show (Wilko), in foal to Not This Time, who was
acquired for $185,000
Asked what he liked about the mare, Aboughazale smiled
knowingly and said, AAs I told you, cousins of Angelina Jolie.@
Sheza Smoke Show won the 2014 GIII Senorita S. and is the
daughter of stakes winner Avery Hall (A. P Jet).
AShe could run and she had speed,@ Relihan said of the mare=s
appeal. AAnd the mating was a nice cross for her physically.
When you buy a mare, you=re buying that foal she=s carrying,
that investment, and it=s always good to like the mating because
it puts you one step ahead when you get that foal on the ground
before you breed her back.@
Sent through the ring at Keeneland last September, the mare=s
Not This Time filly sold for $135,000.
AWe always liked this filly, but Not This Time was not well
known at the time and we thought we got very good money for
her,@ Aboughazale said of the result. AShe was very nice. Then

when she started training, she was a monster.@
The filly worked a lights-out quarter-mile in :20 1/5 before
topping the OBS Spring sale when selling for $1.35 million.
Asked if he regretted selling the filly when he saw her results
at OBS, Aboughazale laughed heartily and said, AYes, of course.
But thanks God, my best friend, he=s like a nephew to me, he
bought her. He paid a lot of money for her.@
The filly, now named Princess Noor, was purchased by Saudi
businessman Amr Zedan. She was a dazzling debut winner in
August before taking the Del Mar Debutante last week.
AI have known him since he was a kid. He calls me uncle,@
Aboughazale said of Zedan. AHe didn=t know at first that I had
bred the filly. He didn=t find out until later. But he called me and
said, >Uncle Oussama, you know who bought this filly?= I am very
happy for him. I hope she becomes a champion. I believe in God,
I believe whatever happens in your life is decided by God. So
God decided we should not have her, that somebody else should
have her.@
Sheza Smoke Show has a yearling colt by Aboughazale=s three-
time graded stakes-winning stallion Protonico (Giant=s
Causeway).
AThe Protonicos, nobody will buy them,@ Aboughazale said
ruefully. AHe is beautifully bred and a beautiful horse. I love him
so much. I am backing him, I am giving him every year a
minimum of 10 good mares. And the best of all the yearling colts
now who will go for training is Sheza Smoke Show=s son. They
will go for breaking at the end of the month.@
Sheza Smoke Show also has a weanling filly by Tapwrit and was
bred back to Protonico this year. Plans for the weanling are still
up in the air.
APossibly,@ Relihan said when asked if the filly would go
through the sales ring. AWe will monitor Princess Noor=s

progress and decide that and who to send the mare to.@
Despite a slower market, International Equities Holding has
already had a pair of strong results in the sales ring this week in
Lexington.
Through the Gainesway consignment, the operation sold a colt
by Gun Runner (hip 570) for $500,000 to trainer Jeremiah
Englehart. The yearling is out of Divine Dawn (Divine Park), a
mare purchased for $285,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November
sale.
AThat=s the second foal out of the mare,@ Relihan said. AWe
bought her in foal to Nyquist, so Mr. Aboughazale is going to
race that filly, she=s a 2-year-old. The Gun Runner was just such
a good commercial filly, very correct, she is a May 1 foal and had
everything. Those kind of fillies you can take to market.@
During Sunday=s first session of the Keeneland September sale,
Aboughazale sold a filly by Curlin (hip 138) for $600,000 to
bloodstock agent Mike Ryan. The yearling is a granddaughter of
Aboughazale=s Chilean champion Wild Spirit (Chi) (Hussonet),
who traveled stateside to capture the 2003 GI Ruffian H.
AWhen you get one that looks like her, you have to keep the
cash flowing,@ Relihan said of the decision to sell the yearling.
The International Equities Holding broodmare band currently
numbers about 40 head and Aboughazale admitted that=s about
as many mares as his farm can hold. He expects to offer all his
foals at auction, but is ready to take them home if need be.
AOur policy is to send them all to the market,@ Aboughazale
said. AIf they pay the price, we sell. If they don=t pay the price,
we keep them. It=s fair for everybody.@
Relihan added, AWe have to take them to market to prove to
the market that Mr. Aboughazale is breeding good, quality
stock. Sometimes in the past, Mr. Aboughazale kept the best
and sold some of the ones that weren=t that good. But now he=s
taking good product to market.@
International Equities Holding still has a handful of offerings to
come as the Keeneland September sale moves into Book 2
Wednesday. Through the Taylor Made Sales Agency
consignment, it will offer a filly by Pioneerof the Nile (hip 535), a
colt by Empire Maker (hip 702), and a colt by Nyquist (hip 790).
In Book 3, the operation will offer a pair of fillies by Empire
Maker (hip 1264 and hip 1287), as well as an American Pharoah
colt whose second dam is Wild Spirit (hip 1370) and a Violence
filly (hip 1522).
AWe have some nice horses coming up in Books 2 and 3,@
Relihan said. AIf they don=t bring a good market value, we have
the luxury that Mr. Aboughazale can race, he has a racing
operation. If they don=t bring what we think they are worth,
then we go to Plan B.@

majority shareholder of the fresh produce division of Del Monte
Fruit Company, was perennially a leading owner in Chile, but he
expects his Kentucky operation will eventually take over.
AIn the long run, I will close Chile and I will concentrate on
Kentucky,@ he said.
The uncertainties in the market caused by the global pandemic
and several major foreign buyers missing from the results sheets
so far at Keeneland may make selling yearlings more difficult,
but Aboughazale may be ready to strike at the November
breeding stock sales if the market continues to be weak.
AI think maybe this year we will buy Angelina Jolie in this
market,@ he said with a laugh.
Following a dark day Tuesday, the Keeneland September sale
continues with the first of two Book 2 sessions Wednesday at 10
a.m. The auction continues through Sept. 25.

Zayat Stables, LLC, is currently a defendant in a $23 million
lawsuit filed in January by a New York lender alleging fraud and
loan defaults. A Kentucky receiver is in the process of liquidating
those equine assets.
Although it is unclear exactly what effect this attempt at
"forced" bankruptcy might have on that case, one possible
scenario is that the petitioners believe that the only way to

to them is to take legal action via an involuntary bankruptcy.
They'd be banking on the bankruptcy order stopping the current
liquidation from moving forward, which might keep others from
getting paid first.
The Chapter 7 documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court,
District of New Jersey (Newark), on Monday allege that Zayat
Stables owes $275,000 in loans "above the value of any lien" to
Steven Keefer.
A 2003 New York Times story on Zayat's beverage business
referred to Keefer as "a former New York investment banker
and now chief of staff to Mr. Zayat" who was also head of the
development group for the beverage firm.
Zayat apparently even named a Thoroughbred racehorse
"Keefer" in honor of his business associate. The colt broke its
maiden in 2008 at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, the home
state for both men.
Keefer is now the chief executive officer at U.S. Elite, LLC, a
New Jersey company that specializes in "tactical" apparel for
fitness and military enthusiasts. According to Keefer's bio page
on the company website, the firm's motto is "We exist to
Enhance the Warrior Lifestyle."
U.S. Elite itself is also listed as a petitioning creditor in the
court documents, alleging $188,500 in loans owed by Zayat
Stables.
A third party, Joseph Bodner, who lives in the same town
(Teaneck) as Zayat, is listed in the petition as being owed
$150,000 by the stable.
Under involuntary bankruptcy law, if a debtor has more than
12 creditors, three creditors must join in the involuntary petition
for a "force" to move forward.
The claims total $613,500. All three amounts match what
Zayat stated he owed those entities in his personal Chapter 7
filing last week.
The petitioners indicated via checking a box that "The debtor is
generally not paying its debts as they become due, unless they
are the subject of a bona fide dispute as to liability or amount."
In his separate, voluntary petition for bankruptcy, Zayat is
claiming $19,371,466 in total liabilities versus total estimated
assets of $1,892,815.
Thoroughbred trainers, horse farms, bloodstock businesses,
veterinarians, and equine transportation companies are among
the 132 entities listed as creditors in Zayat's own Chapter 7
filing. They are due $14,755,1717 in "non-priority unsecured
claims," which means they are at the bottom of the hierarchy to
get paid--if they get paid at all. Zayat Stables is listed as a
co-debtor to 112 of those 132 non-priority unsecured claims.
The next step in the involuntary petition is for Zayat Stables to
file a response. If the debtor contests an involuntary petition,
the petitioning creditor must prove that the debtor is generally

Mystic Guide | Sarah Andrew
not paying its debts.
If the petitioners are successful, the bankruptcy court will
enter an "order for relief" granting the involuntary petition.
But if the court dismisses the petition, the creditors might be
on the hook for paying Zayat Stables' attorney fees and court
costs. In addition, if the court rules that the petition was made in
bad faith, it can award compensatory and even punitive
damages.
Involuntary bankruptcies can be complicated and fraught with
peril for both sides. Nicholas Gebelt, an attorney who writes on
the subject as a California-certified bankruptcy specialist,
described the process like this on his law blog:
"On a practical level, the most compelling reason for filing an
involuntary bankruptcy against a debtor is the fear that the
debtor is rapidly depleting the resources available to pay its
creditors. [But] filing an involuntary bankruptcy against
someone is very dangerous. If you are a creditor who files an
involuntary bankruptcy against a debtor, then if you can't
establish one of the two grounds for reliefYyou may find
yourself paying the very entity from whom you're trying to
collect. Therefore, absent compelling exigent circumstances it is
probably safer to use some other approach to debt collection."
NO MYSTERY ABOUT MYSTIC POTENTIALby Chris McGrath
Of all the oddities shoehorned into the 2020 calendar, a Jim
Dandy on Derby day felt like one of the most incongruous. In a
regular year, this Grade II race serves as a midsummer
crossroads for sophomores with an eye on the GI Travers: a
chance either to regroup, after participation in the Triple Crown
series, or to test the water after missing the Classics through
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 9 OF 16 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • SEPTEMBER 16, 2020
immaturity or injury.
At least this latter function was maintained, this time round, in
the coming-of-age of >TDN Rising Star= Mystic Guide
(Ghostzapper), a colt for whom even a four-month
postponement of the GI Kentucky Derby proved to be not quite
enough. His response to a pair of blinkers, however, suggests
that he could yet profit from the drastic realignment of the
Classics to follow the Derby winner to the GI Preakness S.
In carving his name below that of his grandsire Awesome
Again--himself too late on the scene for the U.S. Classics, when
winning the race in 1997--Mystic Guide made a breakthrough
that had certainly appeared within his compass, despite an
odds-on defeat in the GIII Peter Pan S. at the start of the
Saratoga meet. The dynamic move he made into third that day,
having been going nowhere mid-race, spoke of an unusual talent
still in development.
Though again striking from last place, a more focused animal
contested the Jim Dandy. This time Mystic Guide's brawny
physique required far less organizing--partly, no doubt, thanks
to the blinkers covering up that big blaze of his; but also showing
the benefit of trainer Mike Stidham's forbearance, in never
having tried to make him run before he could walk.
In terms of pedigree, there can't be many horses in training
right now whose ability is easier to explain: his first and third
dams are both five-time Grade I winners, and his unraced
second dam additionally produced a Classic winner in France.
And his sire, of course, is one of the most venerable
speed-carrying influences around.
Not that this kind of seamless quality routinely plays out in
breeding. No less than when we sift a more plebeian family, to
find the hidden genetic nuggets that might explain an
unexpected talent, this one contains its challenges. Because
where we normally ask which cold flints have been rubbed
together to spark a flame, here we must ask why so obvious a
formula has not worked more consistently.
In each case, we are guilty of the besetting vice of pedigree
analysis: picking and choosing such evidence as best fits the
outcome. A situation like this, however, should perhaps be
viewed as a reminder of how the daily misadventures of the
Thoroughbred can unravel even the best pedigrees, the best
horsemanship, the most lavish care.
That applies to the Maktoum empire no less than to the rest of
us. The fact is that Mystic Guide's dam Music Note (A.P. Indy),
who besides her Grade I wins (Coaching Club American Oaks,
Mother Goose, Beldame, Ballerina, Gazelle) made the podium in
consecutive editions of the GI Ladies' Classic at the Breeders'
Cup, has otherwise failed to produce foals commensurate with
their sires and trainers. Though herself as sound and consistent
as she was talented, she has previously mustered only one that

Music Note | Sarah Andrew
has sustained the basic functionality of a racehorse--and that
was a son of Street Cry (Ire) claimed for $16,000 on his second
start. He then managed a dozen wins in 64 subsequent starts, no
fewer than 60 of them at Penn National.
Who knows what innate ability may have been stifled by ill
luck in Music Note's other foals? But her progeny otherwise
include an Elusive Quality filly, unraced after making just
$17,000 as Hip 2990 at the September Sale; two foals by
Distorted Humor that managed a single unplaced start between
them; and a son of Street Cry who did manage to win a race in a
light career for Andre Fabre in France, though only after being
gelded early.
Music Note was homebred for Godolphin by Gainsborough
Stud from the unraced Note Musicale (GB) (Sadler's Wells),
whose dam It's in the Air had broken the Keeneland November
Sale record when acquired for $4.6 million in 1984. From the
first crop of Mr. Prospector, It's in the Air had shared the
2-year-old fillies' championship in 1978 and won the GI Vanity H.
twice, as well as the Ruffian H., Alabama S. and Delaware Oaks.
She was tough, too, winning 16 of 43 starts.
Though It's in the Air produced nine winners in all, the only
one to achieve real distinction was the Seattle Slew filly she was
carrying at the time of her sale, Bitooh (GB), who won the G2
Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte. But several other daughters
proved fertile producers, notably the dam of Storming Home
(GB) (Machiavellian), a top-level winner on either side of the
Atlantic while best remembered for his chaotic disqualification
in the GI Arlington Million. Another daughter, Group-placed
Sous Intendu (Shadeed), has produced three stakes winners
including G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Slip Stream (Irish River
{Fr}), as well as the dam of Australian Group 1 winner Alverta
(Aus) (Flying Sour {Aus}).

It was the unraced Note Musicale, however, who did most to
defray her dam's purchase. Besides Music Note herself, she also
produced Musical Chimes (In Excess {Ire}). A Classic winner for
Fabre, taking the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches before finishing
third in the G1 Prix de Diane, Musical Chimes was exported to
win the GI John C. Mabee H. for Neil Drysdale before becoming
another who proved rather disappointing at stud.
The success of It's in the Air in her second career, somewhat
deferred as it was, is gratifying to those of us who believe that
quality pooled beneath a pedigree can sometimes percolate
unseen through a generation or two. Because her dam, A Wind
Is Rising, was certainly a conduit for the right stuff.
You wouldn't necessarily have said so, judging her as a
Florida-bred, one-time winner by Francis S.--a well-bred but
largely forgotten stallion, winner of the 1960 Wood Memorial
for Harbor View/Burley Parke. Typical, in fact, of the material
Mr. Prospector had to work with, when he started out in Ocala.
(Albeit there's an echo of It's in the Air in some of the most
valued animals around today: Francis S. was damsire of Ogygian,
whose daughter Myth--herself out of a Mr. Prospector mare--
gave us Scat Daddy's sire Johannesburg.)
A Wind Is Rising certainly had a most remarkable symmetry to
her pedigree: both her damsire Nasrullah and grandsire Royal
Charger are sons of Nearco; and Royal Charger is out of
Nasrullah's half-sister Sun Princess. This really is as
copper-bottomed as the last century gets: the dam of Nasrullah
and Sun Princess was a half-sister to the mother of
breed-shaping Mahmoud, the pair of them out of the champion
sprinter Mumtaz Mahal, the fount of so much vital Aga Khan
blood. The mating that produced It's in the Air, moreover,
introduced an extra strain of Nasrullah, his son Nashua being
damsire of Mr. Prospector.
I know people get impatient with these ancient parchments,
but A Wind Is Rising also surfaces as fifth dam of dual G1 Dubai
World Cup winner Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}). That's
because Sheikh Mohammed doubled down on the family by
buying Red Slippers (Nureyev), a great-granddaughter of A Wind
Is Rising, from Robert Sangster after she broke her maiden at
Ascot in 1991. Red Slippers went on to win the G2 Sun Chariot S.
at three, encouraging another deal with Sangster when her
half-sister by Storm Bird won both juvenile starts the following
season. This was Balanchine, whose bold success against the
colts in the G1 Irish Derby would set a bold template for Sheikh
Mohammed's new adventure with Godolphin. And while
Balanchine has made a limited impact as a broodmare, Red
Slippers produced G1 Prix de Diane winner West Wind (GB)
(Machiavellian) as well as Eastern Joy (GB) (Dubai Destination),
dam of four graded stakes performers besides Thunder Snow.
Another European luminary of this family is Saoirse Abu (Mr
Greeley), a dual Group 1-winning juvenile for Jim Bolger in
Ireland (also Classic-placed). She shares a granddam with Red
Slippers.
Valuable mares owned by rich breeders get expensive
coverings, and their offspring should get top-class trainers. So
there are always any number of factors when the likes of
Thunder Snow and now Mystic Ridge come good, three or four
generations after their maternal line parted.
But I do think it comforting to find a family loaded with this
kind of blood. After all, people are always eager to credit a
sireline when it has tapered away to no less tenuous a degree.
And actually the sires who have seeded Mystic Guide's branch
of the family only compound the influences we just noted
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 12 OF 16 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • SEPTEMBER 16, 2020
behind It's in the Air. A.P. Indy doubles up the Nasrullah line
through both sire and damsire. And the dam of Sadler's Wells is
by a Royal Charger-line stallion, while her granddam Thong is by
a son of Nasrullah.
In a horse as well-bred as this, then, it doesn't really matter
which threads of the pedigree come through: they're all gold.
Both Mystic Guide's parents, for instance, are out of dams who
bred another elite runner: Note Musicale had Musical Chimes as
well as Music Note, and Baby Zip had City Zip as well as
Ghostzapper. Exactly the same is true of the respective dams of
damsire and grandsire: Weekend Surprise had Summer Squall as
well as A.P.Indy, and Primal Force had Macho Uno as well as
Awesome Again.
Not even that brings any guarantees, as Mystic Guide's
disappointing siblings show. But if luck and judgement are now
combining to permit the fulfilment of this pedigree's potential,
then there won't be a single creaking floorboard on the stage.
And, someday, that could become hugely important. Because
if Mystic Guide can earn a legitimate place at stud, he will have a
chance to address the one lingering omission in the career of the
phenomenal athlete who became his sire.
Justify (Scat Daddy) has announced with unmissable fanfare
the emergence of Ghostzapper as a broodmare sire,
unsurprising in a grandson of Deputy Minister. And, yes,
Ghostzapper has Shaman Ghost standing alongside him at
Adena Springs; and McCraken, his most precocious son, now
making his way at Airdrie. These two have everything to play
for, respectively launching their first yearlings and weanlings. At
20, however, time is running out for Ghostzapper to increase
competition among his male heirs.
This is a stallion whose lifetime ratio of stakes and graded
stakes winners is comfortably in step with Medaglia d'Oro and
Curlin, and way ahead of many other big names. So the stakes
are high, with Mystic Guide; no higher, however, than the roots
are deep.
WORKOUTS CANCELED AT SANTA ANITA
TUESDAY DUE TO AIR QUALITY Santa Anita management sent a text to trainers Tuesday
morning advising them that workouts would be canceled
because of the air quality.
"The AQI is at 159 this morning. We are going to cancel
workouts and only allow gallopers and joggers," the text said.
In conjunction with Dr. Rick Arthur, the Equine Medical
Director at UC Davis, where he is assigned full time to the

California Horse Racing Board, The Stronach Group has a policy
that any air quality index above 150 could be unhealthy for
horses, and that exercise should be limited on those days.
"Starting at 100 AQI, we start to watch the facility daily and
that's our first level of observation," said Dionne Benson, TSG's
Chief Veterinary Officer. "At 150, we consider limiting training to
jogging and gallops only, just to decrease the amount of air
horses are taking into their lungs. At 175, we'll recommend
cancelling live racing, workouts, and prohibiting galloping or
breezing. We would still consider having them jog or walk on the
track to balance the risks of having them in their stalls for days
at a time." Benson said that the AQI reached 180 last Friday and
Saturday when racing was canceled at Golden Gate.
Santa Anita is being affected by the Bobcat Fire, which is
burning just north of the track in the Angeles National Forest. As
of Tuesday night, the fire had burned over 41,000 acres and was
only 3% contained. Over 1,000 fire personnel are currently
assigned to the fire, which is burning downhill toward the
foothill communities near Arcadia. The spread has prompted
mandatory evacuations for residents of several communities
living along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains which
provide the backdrop for Santa Anita.
The cancellation marks the third time that workouts have been
canceled, allowing only joggers and gallopers, after works were
canceled last Monday and Tuesday in the early stages of the fire.
The winds then shifted, allowing a return to workouts until
Tuesday morning. Typical wind patterns in the area of the track
see the air quality at its worst in the morning, and improving
during the day.
The smoke is distinctly visible in the air on the daily workouts
shown on XBTV.

The Red Cross opened an evacuation center at Santa Anita last
week, but closed it Thursday because it seemed the danger had
passed. They reopened it Sunday afternoon.
NO PUBLIC ADMITTED AT KEENELAND FALL
MEET
The Keeneland Fall meet, to be held Oct. 2-24, will be closed to
the public due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Keeneland
announced via press release Tuesday. Only a limited number of
participants and essential personnel will be permitted to attend
the live race meet.
Keeneland conducted its five-day Summer Meet in July
without spectators but did allow a limited number of owners
and essential personnel to attend.
"The safety of our employees, our participants and our fans
remains Keeneland's top priority," Keeneland President and CEO
Bill Thomason said. "We have the most loyal fans in the world
and we cannot wait for the day when we can welcome them
back for live racing. The decision to close the meet to the public
was made after consulting with local and state government
officials and public health experts and monitoring how various
sporting venues and events around the world have operated
during the pandemic. With the guidance of these experts and
lessons learned from recent events, we know this is the
responsible course of action."
"Sunday's kickoff of the 12-day September Yearling Sale, which
is followed by the Fall Meet, the Breeders' Cup World
Championships and the November Breeding Stock Sale, marks
the beginning of a significant three months of business for
Keeneland and the horse industry as a whole," Keeneland
President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. "It
is paramount that we conduct our sales and racing operations in
a safe and responsible manner that promotes the health and
success of everyone involved.
"We will remain flexible and vigilant leading up to and
throughout our Fall Meet to ensure that we observe the most
current health and safety protocols and respond to any changes
in a timely and thoughtful manner," Arvin added.
To combat the spread of COVID-19, strict compliance with the
following health and safety protocols will be required for
participants and employees while they are at Keeneland. Similar
protocols were in place for the Summer Meet and are in effect
for Keeneland's current September Yearling Sale:
$ Individuals permitted to come onto the Keeneland grounds
will be credentialed or ticketed in advance. Seating will be
assigned and properly social distanced on race days.
$ Participants include those with a competing horse, including a
limited number of owners and trainers. Keeneland also will
allow limited access to sponsors, box holders and Club
members.
$ Keeneland will not permit any general admission or walk-up
attendees. Credentialed participants will be assigned a seat for
the race day.
$ Keeneland will maintain records to allow for contact tracing.
$ Health screenings, including a series of questions and
temperature checks, will continue at all entrance gates.

DEL MAR INCREASES FALL MEET PURSES, "SHIP &
WIN" BONUS Del Mar's seventh fall race meeting--starting Saturday, Oct.
31--will provide horsemen with a 10% blended increase in their
overnight purses and the highest bonuses ever tied to the
popular "Ship & Win" program.
Despite the ongoing pandemic situation, the track was able to
hold firm on its recently announced stakes schedule that offers
16 events with $2.25 million in purses.
The track's minimum purse has increased from 2019's $17,000
to this fall's $20,000.
Additionally, the track's "Ship & Win" program--now in its 10th
year--will provide its richest incentive ever with a guaranteed
$3,000 "starter fee" for all runners.
Further, those runners will be eligible for a 30% purse bonus
added on top of whatever they win (for finishing first through
fifth) in that initial outing.
"We worked with our partners at the Thoroughbred Owners of
California on this and I think we've got a solid foundation that
should encourage our horsemen--as well as those from other
racing venues--to want to be part of what we do here in the
fall," said Del Mar's executive vice president for racing Tom
Robbins. "Our fall meet has grown year by year and is now as
good a run of racing as you're going to find anywhere in the
country this year."
In reference to the "Ship & Win" program, Robbins noted that
since its inception in 2011, the incentive plan has drawn more
than 1,400 runners to Del Mar and they've made more than
2,000 starts at the track, as well as more than 4,200 starts at
other state tracks, such as Santa Anita, Los Alamitos and Golden
Gate.

sales divisions. The consultant will ensure that LRF's trainers,
veterinarians, and staffs comply within regulatory rules as well
as LRF's internal policies regarding training and medication.
"Many industries have compliance managers, why not horse
ownership?" said LRF Managing Partner Gary Fenton. "We want
our partners to have the utmost confidence and trust that our
equine athletes receive world-class care."
LRF Founder and Managing Partner Billy Koch added, "It's time
we take a long, hard look at everything we provide to our
equine athletes. Current training practices need to evolve with
changing times."
Effective immediately, Tom McCrocklin will serve as
compliance consultant for the LRF team and report directly to
Fenton and Koch.
Born in Baton Rouge, La., McCrocklin has an undergraduate
degree from LSU and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science,
specializing in equine from Louisiana Tech. McCrocklin trained at
East Coast racetracks until 1992. He moved to Ocala, Fl., to
commence a breaking/training/sales operation, representing
some of the biggest names in the industry.
McCrocklin will review veterinarian and training bills as well as
regularly visit each LRF barn. He will work alongside LRF's
trainers and vets to create a universal set of protocols.
"Since I am a trainer and understand the culture and
mentality, I look forward to working with my colleagues to
create a methodology that is positive for everyone," said
McCrocklin. "Most trainers want to learn and try less
medications and supplements; they just need the educational
and support tools to do so."
"Too often we hear discussion about a problem in our
industry, yet rarely is there a solution posed," said The Jockey
Club President Jim Gagliano. "Today is not that day. We applaud
LRF for taking this innovative step and showing that owners can
and will take measures to ensure best practices are being met
within our industry."

Theodora B., fresh off a breakthrough victory last out, made it
back-to-back stakes victories with a score in the TVG S. on
Tuesday=s rescheduled card at Kentucky Downs.
Capturing an optional claimer last May at Monmouth, the
homebred went winless in her next eight tries, but racked up
black-type placings in the GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S.,
GIII Maple Leaf S., Big Dreyfus S., Violet S., Forever Together S.
and H.B.P.A. S. during that stretch. Annexing a Laurel optional
claimer in her seasonal debut June 26, she was sixth in the
GIII Trillum S. July 18 at Woodbine before finally getting her day
in the sun when wiring the GII Dance Smartly S. at 11-1 there
Aug. 15.
Made the fractional second choice here behind odds-on Mrs.
Sippy, the dark bay broke sharply and dictated terms under Irad
Ortiz, Jr. through easy fractions of :26.23, :51.32 and 1:15.85.
Arriving at the top of the stretch well in hand, she was cut loose
outside the furlong grounds and held steady from a late
challenge by the chalk to prevail.
The winner=s dam, a black-type victress in England who was
thrice graded placed in the U.S., is out of G1SW Valentine Waltz
(Ire) (Be My Guest), herself a half to GISW Sense of Style
(Thunder Gulch). Dyna Waltz is responsible for a juvenile Into

fillies at Kentucky Downs.
Unveiled over 5 1/2 turfy furlongs at Ellis Aug. 8, the $130,000

Off as the fourth choice from the widest-out post here, the
dark bay settled in sixth as Fouzia ripped through a torrid :21.48
quarter while pressed along by Lady Edith (Street Boss). Moving
swiftly after the leaders passing the three-sixteenths pole, she
took charge a furlong out and kicked clear to a convincing
success despite swapping leads several times. Longshot Taylor=s
Tourist, shipping in off a blowout win at Evangeline, ran on from
last to get second, while Fouzia did well to hold third.
AThey looked like they were going a little quick and were
spread out around the turn, so I thought we were in a good
spot,@ said winning trainer Brad Cox. AThen when she came off
the turn, it looked like when Shaun [Bridgmohan] asked her to
pick it up, she wanted to duck in behind a horse. He
straightened her up. She ran on and looked like she was clearing
off and then she dropped back in. Obviously she=s still green and
has a lot to learn, but she=s a very talented filly that we think has
a big future.@
The victory capped off a big day for owner Rick Kueber=s
Kueber Racing, which was also represented by blowout

Lighthouse, shipping in from California along with jockey
Umberto Rispoli, stormed to the lead in the stretch to pull an
upset in Tuesday=s Music City S. at Kentucky Downs.
Bought for $375,000 last spring at OBS April, the gray earned
her cap and gown second out and, after a seventh-place effort in
the Blue Norther S., was runner-up in the GIII Sweet Life S.
Feb. 16 at Santa Anita. Annexing an optional claimer May 29 in
Arcadia, she finished a fast-closing second in the Daisycutter S.
last out July 24 at Del Mar.
Drifting up off an 8-1 morning-line estimate as the money
poured in on G1 Commonwealth Cup runner-up Kimari,
Lighthouse was part of an early pace scrum before deferring to
track from second through a :21.87 quarter. Blowing past the
pacesetter at the three-sixteenths marker, she skipped clear
into the final furlong and comfortably held sway from fellow
longshot Miss J McKay to score. Kimari finished an even third.
AThis was good. It was a nice experience,@ said Rispoli. AThe
track is a funny track. But being around Europe, I=ve been riding
many times on tracks like that so it doesn=t bother me at all.@

Pat Smullen | Healy Racing Photographers
IRISH CHAMPION JOCKEYPAT SMULLEN PASSES AT 43
Pat Smullen, Irish Champion Jockey nine times throughout his
career, passed away on the evening of Sept.15 at St Vincent=s
Hopsital in Dublin, Ireland. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in
March of 2018, he was 43.
Smullen began riding out as an apprentice for Tom Lacy, and
made an immediate impact, being named champion apprentice
both in 1995 and 1996. He also rode for Joanna Morgan and
after serving his apprenticeship, Smullen rode for various other
trainers, including John Oxx, and Tommy Stack before joining
forces as first call rider for Irish maestro Dermot Weld in 1999.
For Weld he would serve the rest of his 20-year career.
Among those two decades were the aforementioned nine
riding titles, the most recent in 2016, after piloting Harzand (Ire)
(Sea The Stars {Ire}) to a win in the G1 Epsom Derby. Smullen
booted home 10 other Classic winners, including G1 Irish Oaks
victress Covert Love (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), G1 2000 Guineas hero
Refuse to Bend (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) and quadruple G1 Irish St
Leger winner Vinnie Roe (Ire) (Definite Article {GB}).
Smullen began penning a weekly column for the TDN shortly
before he retired from the saddle in May of 2019 after doctors
advised him against a return to race riding. He put those months
to good use, however, subsequently raising over €2.5 million for
Cancer Trials Ireland through various charity efforts.

figures on past purchases, life during lockdown and their
perspective on the sales for the next few weeks. Today, Oliver St

years? And your favourite?
OSL: Buying Daahyeh (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) for ,75,000 at
the Goffs UK Premier Sale in 2018 has proven fortuitous. She
has earned over ,330,000 from her six runs to date, winning
half of them, including the G2 Rockfel S. and the G3 Albany S. at
Royal Ascot. She was second in her other three starts including
the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G1 Moyglare [Stud] S.

TDN Q&A With Oliver St Lawrence Cont.
OSL: Her close form with Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) makes the few
niggles she's had this year frustrating but she should be back in
the next few weeks. She comes from a great Juddmonte family
and is a lovely foundation mare for Aislabie Stud. Unsurprisingly
she has become one of my favourites.
TDN: Is there any positive you have taken from how the sales
have been conducted this year?
OSL: I think we've all had to adapt how we do our work, from
sales companies embracing online bidding to agents sending out
more videos of horses at sales. Building and maintaining that
vital element of trust between buyer and agent has been
emphasised in these Covid times.
TDN: How has your business adapted?
OSL: I'm more on the ground at training stables, studs and sales
than my clients, so keeping very good communication with
clients has been essential. I've started working from home more
which has pros and cons.
TDN: In general what are your thoughts on the 2020 yearling
catalogues? And what progeny of new stallions are you most
looking forward to?
OSL: I think the catalogues are of similar quality to previous
years, though the distribution between sales houses fluctuates
slightly. Having attended Goffs UK Premier and Arqana Select
yearling sales I have really liked the Almanzor (Fr), Caravaggio
and Ribchester (Ire) yearlings. I've already bought yearlings by
the first two and just need to source the right Ribchester at the
right price. Profitable (Ire) has had some nice stock of the less
pricey stallions.
TDN: Did you develop any new interests or hobbies during
lockdown?
OSL: I took to going on long walks with our dogs (one couldn't
handle the increase) but was actually pretty busy during the
main lockdown as I sell a lot of stallion nominations on behalf of
shareholders.
TDN: Who's the most interesting person you know? Cont. p6

Oliver St Lawrence | Keeneland
TDN Q&A With Oliver St Lawrence Cont.
OSL: Undoubtedly Sir Mark Prescott, who, aside from being a
master trainer, is a fount of knowledge and of long anecdotes
that can keep anyone interested and amused for days. His
knowledge stretches from art to blood-sports. I have been lucky
enough to act as his agent at Keeneland September in recent
years and it has been a most entertaining and enlightening few
days, not always in ways I'd expected. I have clients with horses
in his stables, so I get a telephone call each Sunday which gives
me the opportunity to gently wind him up.
TDN: What's one mistake (if any) you made in your career, and
what did you learn from it?
OSL: I am rubbish with remembering names and therefore can
lack the self-confidence to talk to people I have met. I know
what I should have learnt regarding names but instead I
normally try and get away without being obvious, and probably
failing miserably.

Spectator Pilot Event Cont.
The Department of Culture, Media & Sport approved the
racing-with-fans trial, but exacting health and safety measure
will be in place. Warwick Racecourse is holding its spectator
pilot event on Sept. 21. Earlier this summer, a pilot event at the
Qatar Goodwood Festival was called off at the 11th hour, and
only the Wednesday, Sept. 9 of the St. Leger Festival at
Doncaster allowed fans. The Cambridgeshire meeting features
will be just the third race meeting with fans since British racing
shut down due to COVID-19 in March.
AWe=re pleased to be working closely with local authorities to
stage a limited spectator trial at the Rowley Mile over the course
of the Cambridgeshire meeting,@ said Newmarket East Region
Director for Jockey Club Racecourses Amy Starkey. AThe
racecourse is a vast, predominantly outdoor environment that
could safely space out several thousand people, not just the
maximum 1,000 who will be in attendance with stringent health
and safety measures in place.
AThe Newmarket trial will provide important insights we can
share across our industry and with other sports, so that when it
is possible to welcome some level of spectators back to events
more regularly in the future we are well equipped to do so.@

DIGITAL PASSPORT IDEA PROPOSED FOR
EUROPEAN HORSE MOVEMENT An equine digital passport solution, which would ensure the
efficient cross-border movement of sport, racing and breeding
horses beginning in 2021, was proposed by the International
Horse Sports Confederation Taskforce (IHSC) for Brexit and
European Union Animal Health Law on Tuesday. The proposal
would allow for the free movement of horses between Great
Britain and Europe following the end of the Brexit transition
period in December 2020 and would also meet the
requirements of the new European Union Animal Health Law
Legislation, which begins on Jan. 1, 2021.
Operational at the beginning of 2021 if accepted for use, the
digital passports would provide authorities of EU countries with
fail-safe information on the horse=s identity, as well as real-time
monitoring of its movement and ownership information and
updated vaccination and medical records. Paper passports
would continue to be issued as is currently required by the EU,
until this measure was approved by the EU member states.
The IHSC Task Force is a collaboration between the Federation
Equestre Internationale (FEI), the European Equestrian
Federation (EEF), the International Federation of Horseracing
Authorities (IFHA), the International Thoroughbred Breeders
Federation (ITBF) and the European Federation of Thoroughbred
Breeders Association (EFTBA).
AThis is an unprecedented show of solidarity for the horse
industry in Europe,@ FEI Veterinary Director and Chair of the
IHSC Task Force Dr. G`ran Akerstr`m said. AGreat Britain=s
decision to leave the European Union, the difficulties in
implementing the new Animal Health Law legislation, as well as
the problems created by the global pandemic stand to adversely
impact a regional industry which generates an annual revenue in
excess of i50 billion and provides employment for more than
500,000 people.
AAny obstacles to the cross-border movement of horses and
associated personnel would result in huge economic losses to
Britain, Ireland and France, as well as other EU Member States
such as Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy.
AIt is imperative that we put in place systems and processes to
ensure the efficient and safe cross-border movement of horses
and this digital passport would play a key role in that.@
IRISH GOVERNMENT RELEASES NEW COVID
GUIDELINES, SPECTATORS POSSIBLE Crowds of up to 500 people will be possible at Irish
racecourses, after the Irish government announced the latest
COVID-19 rules on Tuesday. Ireland is at stage 2 in the
government=s coronavirus alert, which allows for 200 more
people at racecourses than previously. If Ireland reaches stage 1,
500 people would allowed, up from 200. If the pandemic
worsens and reaches stage 3 or stage 4 in the new grading
system, racing would once again go behind closed doors. At
stage 5, racing, along with other sports, would cease.
"It's not a sustainable number for a lot of racecourses but
there's provision in the legislation to engage on those issues and
we will do so in the coming weeks on that,@ Horse Racing
Ireland=s Brian Kavanagh told Racing Post. AA total of 200 will
probably allow owners and 500 doesn't give much more leeway
but we'll look at that over the course of the coming days. We've
followed government guidance throughout this process and will
continue to do so."

Delphine Violette Cont.
He added, AWith her arrival, we will be able to accelerate the
work done over the past three years for the spread of our
events and the growth of revenues around our "race product".
Delphine will also participate in the new impetus we want to
give to our actions in favor of existing owners and those to be
conquered. Delphine succeeds Fabrice Favetto Bon, whom I
would like to thank warmly."
Added Violette, AThe emotion of sport has always been at the
heart of my career. I am delighted to take a new step at France
Galop by taking on the magnificent challenge of valuing races as
well as all activities."
FORET HAT TRICK THE AIM FOR ONE MASTER
MG1SW One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who won the
2018 and 2019 editions of the G1 Prix de la Foret on Arc Day, is
on course for a third attempt, trainer William Haggas revealed.
A winner of the G3 Oak Tree S. at Goodwood this July, the Lael
Stables homebred has been runner-up in her past two
startsBthe G2 City of York S. on Aug. 22 and the Sept. 12 G2 Park
S. at Doncaster last out.
Haggas said, AShe ran very well. She=s just been unfortunate,
but that=s the way it goes. She=s come out of the race fine and
that [Foret] is the plan.@
Another Haggas trainee, the Cheveley Park Stud homebred
Sacred (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) is pointing to the G1
Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket on Sept. 26. The daughter of
Sacre Caroline (Blame) has been runner up in a trio of Group 2s
after breaking her maiden at first asking on June 4Bthe June 20
Queen Mary S., Aug. 20 Lowther S., and Sept. 11 Bombardier
Flying Childers S.
ASacred was unfortunate as we had to go a bit earlier than
we=d planned to beforehand as the race was happening away
from her,@ added Haggas. AShe=ll go for the Cheveley Park S.
next.@
TELECASTER CAMP EYES ARC BID Castle Down Racing=s Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}),
who won the G3 La Coupe on June 25 and the G2 Grand Prix de
Deauville two starts later on Aug. 30, is a potential contender for
the G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, trainer Hughie Morrison
announced on Tuesday. The 4-year-old colt also won the G2
Dante S. last term.
AIt=s definitely a possibility that he could go,@ said Morrison.
ANothing really sprang out of the trials to put us off. The filly
who won the [G1 Prix] Vermeille [Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal)]
was impressive, but connections said afterwards that was her
day. On quick ground the Vermeille was run three or four
lengths quicker than the Foy. You might not be able to take that
literally, but given all the results I think we have a right to be
there.
AIt was heavy when we won at Deauville so if it was soft that
would be in our favour, I think--we wouldn=t want it quick, but
hopefully at that time of year it wouldn=t be anyway.
AIt all seemed to click last time, he seems to have taken the
race very well. We=re realistic, but the owner quite rightly feels
finishing third in the Arc might be viewed better than a Group 1
anywhere else in the world at this time of yea--bar the [Oct. 17

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS
HARRY EUSTACE TO SUCCEED FATHER
JAMES AT PARK LODGE James Eustace, who has trained for 30 years, will be followed
by his son Harry, 32, at Park Lodge Stables early in 2021, Racing
Post reported on Tuesday. Harry Eustace has been an assistant
trainer to William Haggas for four years.
AI've had a wonderful time with William and Maureen Haggas
but have decided the pandemic was not a good enough reason
not to start training,@ said the younger Eustace to Racing Post.
AIt's been long in the planning to take over from dad and I'm
very much looking forward to the challenges ahead.@
Added his father, AI turned 60 this year which is a bit of
gamechanger and I've been training at Park Lodge for 30 years
so it's time for a younger person to step in. All my owners have
been informed and they are staying on board and are very
positive about it.@
HIGH CLEARANCE RATE AT DONCASTER
SEPTEMBER HIT SALE At the end of the day=s trade, the Goffs UK September HIT Sale
posted a sparkling clearance rate of 91%, with 221 lots sold of
243 horses through the ring. The sale featured the Gleadhill
House Dispersal, which sold all 56 members of its draft for a
gross of £1,136,200. The overall aggregate was £2,731,200, with
an average up four points to £12,358 and a median of £6,000 (-
25%).
Topping the sale, 7-year-old gelding Stoney Mountain (Ire)
(Mountain High {Ire}) (lot 183) brought a bid of £140,000 from
Tom Malone acting with Anita Gillies. The Downton Hall Stables-
consigned chestnut has won at the Grade III level over hurdles.
Gigginstown House also offered a quality draft, with Aidan
O=Ryan and Gordon Elliott striking for their lot 169, the MG1SW
Petit Mouchoir (Fr) (Al Namix {Fr}) at £70,000.
The dearest lot hailing from the Godolphin draft was the
unraced Trebizond (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) (lot 157). A half-
brother to G2 Dante S. hero Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and
to the unraced dam of MG1SW miler Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman
{GB}), the 3-year-old gelding was picked up by Durcan
Bloodstock for £34,000.
AToday has been a big success and it=s great to finish with a
clearance rate of 91% which demonstrates the huge demand for
horses-in-training,@ said Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent.
AThe two dispersals added a great depth to the sale and we are
extremely grateful to both Trevor Hemmings and Gigginstown
House Stud for giving us the opportunity to sell these high class
horses.
AIt has been a pleasure to offer some very exciting horses for
Trevor Hemmings and his colours, which will still be seen on NH
tracks for some time to come, will leave a lasting legacy in NH
racing. The Gigginstown Dispersal has become an annual
highlight at this sale and we look forward to seeing these horses
run for new connections this season.
"We have also welcomed large drafts from the likes of
Godolphin and Gordon Elliott and we wish to extend our thanks
to all our vendors and buyers B without them we are nothing."

Almanzor stands the SH season at Cambridge Stud | Haras d=Etreham
Too Darn Hot | Darley Stallions
MATING PLANS FORCAMBRIDGE STUD
By Paul Vettise
Cambridge Stud=s confidence received a major boost by the
latest round of European sale results achieved by shuttle stallion
Almanzor (Fr) as it heads into a busy breeding season on both
sides of the Tasman.
For the third consecutive year, Brendan and Jo Lindsay=s
showpiece nursery has put the book full sign up on Almanzor
while Cambridge Stud will also be sending a sizeable portion of
its broodmare band to a selection of leading Hunter
Valley-based stallions.
The farm will breed more than 150 mares in 2020 with 60
booked to proven Australian-based stallions and an array of
first-season sires.
Hunter Quality Included among the proven Australian-based sires to be used
by Cambridge Stud is Dundeel (NZ), with three mares booked to
the Arrowfield Stud stallion.
AArdeche is going to him along with another nice mare called
Promise To Reign, who was a stakes-placed filly. We think he=s
done very well at stud and had two Group 1 horses in his first
crop,@ Chief Executive Officer Henry Plumptre said.
Ardeche (NZ) (Dehere {USA}) is the dam of the Group 3 winner
Mongolian Marshal (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) while Promise To
Reign (Manhattan Rain), a multiple Group placegetter, produced
her first foal last year by Tavistock (NZ). Both mares are
currently empty.
AWe have decided to roll the dice with I Am Invincible and sent
the Zabeel mare Zonza to him. She has produced the stakes
winners Bavella and Vernazza,@ Plumptre said. AWe=ve got a
beautiful Tavistock 2-year-old colt with Roger James out of her
so she=s getting every chance and Zonza is in foal to Almanzor.
AWe were delayed by the piroplasmossis investigation so our
in-foal mares have to foal here before they go to Australia.@
Two further high-profile Hunter Valley matings involve Griante
(Good Journey {USA}) and Thames Court (Commands).
AThey are two pretty important mares and they will be going
to Pierro,@ Plumptre said.
The G1 The Galaxy H. winner Griante is the dam of recent
debut winner Cadenabbia (Redoute=s Choice), who was a
NZ$800,000 Karaka yearling, and is in foal to Dundeel and
currently at Milburn Creek. Thames Court won the G3 Alexandra
S. and her first foal topped Cambridge Stud=s draft at the New
Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale this year when her Lonhro colt
sold to Coolmore for NZ$675,000. She was served by Written
Tycoon last year.
AOf the other established stallions, we=re using horses like
Written Tycoon, Lonhro, Epaulette who I think has also made a
very good start, Deep Field and Brazen Beau,@ Plumptre said.
First-season Sires Cambridge Stud is also sending mares to first-season stallions
including Blue Point (Ire), Castelvecchio, Microphone, Pierata
and Too Darn Hot (GB).
TDN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND • PAGE 2 OF 3 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • 16 SEPTEMBER 2020
Pierata | Bronwen Healy
AWe=re sending Egyptian Cross to Pierata. She is a daughter of
Egyptian Raine and had a Deep Field filly last year and a very
nice All Too Hard colt,@ Plumptre said. AEgyptian Cross is in foal
to Almanzor and we=ve got a mare called Prose Poem. She=s a
European mare by Street Cry and going to Pierata and also in
foal to Almanzor.
APierata is easily the fastest son of Pierro and Aquis has been
extremely good supporters of the yearling sale arena for the last
few years. We wanted in some small way to do some reciprocal
business with them.
AI loved Pierata when he was racing, he was a very good horse,
and Pierro looks like the heir designate to Lonhro."
The older guard of Coolmore's Pierro, So You Think (NZ) and
Fastnet Rock aside, Cambridge Stud will also support the
youthful members of the roster including Rubick, American
Pharoah (USA), Churchill (Ire), Merchant Navy and Yes Yes Yes.
AWe=ve taken the view with
some of the young Coolmore
stallions that they are horses
that Coolmore have a lot of
vested interest in. In their
inimitable way, they will do
everything they can to make
sure those horses succeed and
we=re trying to be part of that as
well,@ Plumptre said. AThe Group
3 winner Abidewithme is going
to American Pharoah and is foal
to Almanzor. The dam of the
Group 2 winner Scott Base (NZ),
Extra Celestial, is going to
American Pharoah as well.
AThat=s a good mating for her
and she has got an I Am Invincible yearling and wasn=t served
last year.
New Zealand Sires Supported On the home front, stud residents Almanzor and Embellish
(NZ) will again be strongly supported, and the farm will also
send mares to the established group of outside stallions
Savabeel, Ocean Park (NZ), Reliable Man (GB), Per Incanto
(USA), Darci Brahma (NZ), El Roca and Charm Spirit (Ire).
Young stallions Tivaci, Tarzino (NZ), U S Navy Flag (USA), Ten
Sovereigns (Ire), Belardo (Ire), Ribchester (Ire) and Eminent (Ire)
figure in breeding plans as well.
Cambridge Stud was delighted to see Almanzor claim
first-season sire honours at the recent Arqana Deauville Select
Sale. The son of Wootton Bassett (GB) had 19 yearlings sell at an
average of i126,789 (AU$206,300) and a top price of i280,000
(AU$455,500).
AWe were very heartened and there was a bit of an indicator
with his foals at the December sale at Deauville last year. The
few on offer sold extremely well and we were very happy with
Almanzor=s yearling sale,@ Plumptre said. AFor a first-season sire
they sold for pretty serious money and, in a year like this and off
a i35,000 (AU$56,940) service fee, it was all pretty acceptable.
AHe does get good types and puts a bit more bone and
substance into them than the average French sire. That=s one of
the things we=ve noticed down here, they are well-conformed
with plenty of scope so we=re excited.@
Among the Cambridge Stud mares booked to Almanzor is the
G3 Nivison S. winner Diamond Earth (Choisir).
AShe=s (Diamond Earth) had a colt by Churchill last year and
then missed, and Game Duchess, who is the dam of two Group
3 winners, Exquisite Jewel and Dark Princess, is in foal to
Almanzor and going back to
him,@ Plumptre said. AZenella,
who was second in the G1
Queensland Oaks, is in foal to
The Autumn Sun and another
going to Almanzor.@
Also booked in is Mefnooda
(Medaglia D=Oro {USA}), who
had a Snitzel colt last year and is
in foal to Justify (USA), and My
My Maree (Testa Rossa) who is
the dam of Group 1 winner
Marky Mark (NZ) (Makfi {GB}).
Mefnooda was purchased at last
year=s Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale out of
Segenhoe Stud=s draft for
$450,000. She is a half-sister to the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude
winner One Last Dance (Encosta De Lago).
Almanzor will serve Too Many Diamonds (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}),
dam of Group 2 winner Ruud Not Too (NZ) (Bernardini {USA}), as
well as the listed winner Diamond Like (Danehill {USA}), dam of
Group 2 winner Forever Loved (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and in
foal to the stallion.
AWe=ll be selling yearlings by him at Karaka and we=ve offered
a small group to Inglis and Magic Millions. There=s a couple for
Magic Millions who are more forward, robust types and a few
others we=ve put in the Classic Sale and two or three in the
Melbourne Sale.
AWe=ve got a minimum of 50 yearlings going to Karaka and
that=s going to be our strength. If we can take half a dozen or so
Almanzors out of the Karaka system we=re not directly
competing with our major supporters here.

Michael Walker Secures Willoughby Ride
AWe want to carefully expose him to the Australian market and
luckily for us I think his exploits overseas at the sales and
Wootton Bassett=s record over the last 18 months has resulted
in Almanzor successfully advertising himself.@
The book for Almanzor=s associate sire Embellish includes
proven mares Dancing Forever (NZ) (Keeper) and Love
Diamonds (Danehill {USA}).
AWe=re giving him a lot of chances. He=ll serve Dancing Forever,
the dam of stakes winner Respin, and he=s getting Love
Diamonds, the dam of Group 3 winner Queen Of Diamonds, who
is in foal to Embellish,@ Plumptre said.
The G2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders= S. winner Fazzle
(NZ) (Johar {USA}), who is empty, and the G3 Desert Gold S.
winner Glamorous Girl (NZ) (Thorn Park) are others on
Embellish=s list.
Team Approach The matings are completed with a team effort from Cambridge
Stud employees and modelled Plumptre=s past experience.
AI=ve done pretty much the same thing here as I did at
Godolphin. I had the stud managers from New South Wales and
Victoria, who knew their mares, and I=d have Alastair Pulford
and Andy Makiv,@ he said. AIn the first run through everyone
would sit down and go through every mare, the second run
through we=d fine-tune.
AHere, we sit down as a group with Stud Manager Bevan
McCullum and General Manager Marc Devcich, myself, Scott
Calder, Head of Sales and Nominations, and Cameron Ring from
the sales team.
AWe look at pedigrees and crosses, Scott and Cam are very up
to speed with what works with a sire line and we use the stud
manager=s expertise of the types the mares throw. We gradually
come up with a picture of what we want.
AWhat we have done this year, because we had a disastrous
time last year losing our stallions, is that we made the decision
to send a significant number of mares to Australia.
AHopefully, we won=t have to do that next year because we
will have Hello Youmzain arriving, but equally I don=t see
anything wrong in going to the yearling sales with a draft of
horses with a strong representation of Australian sires.
AIn terms of pedigrees and stallions, we have to be
multi-national to appeal to our biggest customer.@
