Creativity & Innovation

The non-profit Partnership for 21st Century Skills identifies

three broad areas of skills that will separate students who

are prepared for the increasingly complex work environments

of the 21st century and those who are not. Top among them

are creativity and innovation. Likewise, business executives

surveyed by the U.S. Department of Labor say they want to

hire employees who can create, collaborate, and communicate.

And business writer Daniel Pink identifies creativity as the top

currency of our current “conceptual age.”

It is becoming abundantly clear that subject knowledge

alone is no longer enough for success–and even that the neat

subject-area divisions contrived for nineteenth century

schooling are fast becoming extinct. As we engage in the

forward momentum of education, we remain cognizant of the

fact that “life’s biggest tests aren’t standardized.” In order to

prepare our children well for the demands that lie ahead, we

must continue to invest in an education that goes beyond

content to the dispositions that the workplace will demand.

The arts provide a clearly illuminated path.

Hundreds of tiles were created and laid into a mosaic marking the historical significance of the 95th anniversary of St. Robert School. Alumni (including one who traveled from Minnesota) and parents participated with students and faculty in this one week artist-in- residence project funded by the Home and School Association. The artist, Connie Greany, lived with a school family for the week and met with students in art classes to share her personal stories of art and faith. The mosaic illustrates the iconic image of our church spire and includes symbols and words that reflect the rich history of our school. It hangs in the soaring southeast stairway of the school and can be viewed nearly side by side with the actual church spire seen through the window.

Art Docent Program-Barbara Dietz, 5th Grade Teacher

The Milwaukee Art Museum’s Junior Docent School Program provides St. Robert students in grades three to five an opportunity to learn about the vocabulary, history, and interpretation of the visual arts; to de-velop an awareness and understanding of visual arts in relation to history and cultures; and to explore and develop various verbal, visual, kinesthetic and critical thinking skills.

Students visit the Milwaukee Art Museum three times a year over a three-year period, sequentially building art concepts and skills. During fifth grade, the third year of the multiple-visit program, each student chooses an individual work of art, studies it in depth, and presents an aesthetic response to a group of peer and family members as a culminating experience. It is a fabulous and an amazing program for our students.

Art in a SuitcaseVisits from the suitcase lady, Mary Tooley, are special days for St. Robert students. Mrs. Tooley comes several times throughout the year, bringing with her a suitcase full of treasures and lessons combining art, natural science, storytelling and multicultural activities. Topics range from African Adventures and Things Japanese to Going Buggy and Animal Champions. Mrs. Tooley, who has taught art to children for 20 years, describes her Art in a Suitcase programs as “a little natural history museum that travels.” Using creativity and imagination, she takes St. Robert students on an exciting journey with each visit.

Art, Technology and QR Codes -Laurie Yingling, Technology Integrator

There are many learning connections that can be made between art and technology. I could use online software to create a drawing or image, or I could “publish” an image to a blog in order to get feedback on my work. But, recently, the fifth and eighth grade classes at St. Robert took the relationship between art and technology a step further. We made the students’ artwork come alive using technology. How? We used QR, or Quick Response codes, to digitally capture each student’s description.

The fifth graders just completed their Art Museum Docent project (see article above) in which they researched museum pieces and then created their own reinterpretation of a selected piece. And, in eighth grade art class, Mrs. Bailey’s students examined famous artists and then produced small clay “Beasties,” or animal-like figures in the style of a particular artist or genre. We recorded each student discussing his or her piece and produced a QR code of the recording. When visitors attended the school art shows, they used QR readers on their mobile devices to listen to the student docents. Art AND technology. Amazing!

Art for Youth-Margaret DeMichele, Parent Volunteer

Art for Youth is a parent volunteer art enrichment program that introduces St. Robert School students in all grade levels to artistic masterpieces and provides them with the tools to start a visual, emotional, historical and contextual understanding of the artwork and the artist who created them. The volunteers present to the classrooms about five times a year and discuss the artist who created the work and the artwork itself (basic elements of art and principles of design, the media and technique of how it was created). The Art for Youth program teaches our students how to look at artwork with a critical eye and an inquisitive mind. It also exposes the children to a wide variety of art from around the world.

Alice (Kuehnl) Dernbach ‘38 returned to celebrate Mass at St. Robert and to tour the parish school. She and her husband, Norbert, were blessed with six children. She is now a grandmother and great-grandmother. Dernbach taught first grade for 20 years in the Long Island, NY school system.

Thomas J. Krizek, MD ‘46 retired from plastic surgery in 1999 and obtained a master’s in religious studies from University of South Florida in 2004. He has been teaching religious studies since 1999, most recently at Western Carolina University.

Roy Potter ‘55 retired after 43 years in the medical device industry. He is married to Bede Potter and has two daughters, Karen and Holly, and two stepsons, Chris and Patrick.

Tom Slater ‘56 is president of the Plymouth Arts Center in Plymouth, WI. He was called out of retirement in 2011 to be the president of a Plymouth area manufacturing company. He has also served as a SCORE counselor and as president of the local Rotary Foundation.

Timothy J. Malloy ’58 is a patent litigator and the chairman of McAndrews, Held and Malloy, an intellectual property firm with over 80 attorneys in Chicago. He married Patti Smid in 1969. The couple has two children, Chris and Brigid, and nine grandchildren.

Katie O’Brien ‘62 wrote the St. Robert Parish Centennial hymn “A Family in Faith” that is being used throughout the parish’s yearlong Centennial celebrations.

Nancy (Gardner) Feldman, PhD ‘68 is a faculty member in the Department of Art History at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Her research specialization is in textiles and medieval art. She recently co-directed and produced a four year film project with the Field Museum of Chicago titled “Shipibo...the Movie of our Memories.” Feldman has one son, Eli.

Anne (Gross) Makepeace ‘70 lives in New Ulm, MN and is the human resources director of Allina Hospital. She has a bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, OH and a master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both her daughters, Tessa and Kate, are students at Washington University in St. Louis. She and her husband, John, bought a hotel in New Ulm that was built by Anne’s great-great-great grandfather in the 1850s and are developing it into a nonprofit arts and music center. They recently received the Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award.

Mary Chris (Gross) Bassman ‘72 is an occupational therapist with her own practice in New Jersey. She and her husband, Alan, live in Mahwah, NJ. Their son, Darren, graduated from Villanova University and now lives in New York City, working on Wall Street. Their daughter, Elyse, is a junior at Colorado College.

Alan Timper ‘87 lives in Lima, OH and is finishing a degree in environmental science management.

Sonia Kubica ‘90 co-founded the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network in 2000. She volunteers as gallery manager for a DIY, experimental arts venue in Madison called The Project Lodge. In 2011, she mounted “SolidARTity,” a concurrent reflection of the art of the Wisconsin union protests.

Bob Kraft ’92 is the CEO of First Edge Solutions. He was named to The Business Journal Forty Under 40 list.

Christine (Bremner) Welland ‘93 and her husband, Jeremy, welcomed a son last October in San Fracisco, CA. He is the couple’s first child.

Brian Leonard ‘93 is a regional sales director for US Bank. He married Nicole Gahagan in 2009. Their son, Maxwell, was born in July 2011.

John Linn ’93 is a surgeon in Chicago. He and his wife, Katie, have two sons, Ty and Patrick.

Sara (Machi) Witmeyer ‘94 and her husband, Robert, wel-comed their first child, Elizabeth Thais, born on October 27, 2010.

Alison Leonard ‘95 received her PhD in curriculum and instruction from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is an assistant professor of arts and creativity in the School of Education at Clemson University, SC.

Nina (Balistreri) O’Brien ‘96 and her husband, Dan, welcomed a daughter, Alessandra Vivian, in November 2011.

Lt. Joe Gunta ‘96 is the chief engineer on the USS KIDD out of San Diego, CA.

Kate Goyette ’97 graduated from Winona State University in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations and theater. She has completed two nation-wide community service programs: AmeriCorps VISTA with Milwaukee Public Schools, which aims to alleviate poverty, and Ameri-Corps NCCC in Sacramento, CA, which offers direct service to nonprofit organizations and responds to national disasters. She currently works for 2-1-1 at United Way of the Bay Area in San Francisco, CA.

Margaret Linn ’97 married Dan Platten at St. Robert Church in July 2012. Linn is a first grade teacher at St. Alphonsus in Chicago and is in a master’s program at DePaul University.

Maureen Bremner ‘96 married Daniel Sawaya in October 2012 in Sonoma, CA. She works as a registered nurse in the pedi-atric care unit at University of California-San Francisco.

Matt Haas ‘98 married Victoria Chen on January 1, 2012.

Kelly O’Keef ‘98 married Reed Tyriver on September 1, 2012 at St. Robert Church. The wedding party included Katie O’Keef ‘03, Brad O’Keef ‘85, Rob O’Keef ‘83, Conor O’Keef ‘18, and Flannery O’Keef ‘20. Kelly is a retirement plan consultant at Benefit Administration, Inc. in Appleton and was appointed to the company’s Board of Directors in January. The couple currently resides in Oshkosh.

Bill Callaghan ‘74 published a book called Raised with PRAISE - How My Parents Made Me a Happy Soul. The book is filled with humorous and inspirational stories about attending St. Robert School and growing up in Shorewood. Callaghan and all ten of his siblings went to St. Robert School. He wrote the book as a tribute to his parents, Martha and Coyne Callaghan, and their positive parenting approach.

Dick Casper enlisted with the Navy in 1940 with his close friend and St. Robert School classmate, John Drew ‘30. They were both eventually deployed to the USS Lexington. The Lexington was sunk in the Battle of the Coral Sea, but Casper and Drew survived.

Awards nMatthew Hammer ‘99 earned his doctorate in medicine in May 2011 from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He earned bachelor’s degrees in biological sciences and Spanish from Marquette University in 2007. He is completing his residency in anesthesiology at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago.

Catherine Linn ’99 is in a doctoral program for clinical psychology at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

Elizabeth (Nosacek) Neuman ‘99 recently graduated with a business degree from Western Governors University. She is married to Tony Neuman and has three children, Cleopatara, Aeris, and Miles.

Alex Pease ‘01 graduated from Harvard University in 2010 and is living in Chicago.

Jimmy Carlton ‘02 graduated from Northwestern University Medill Journalism School in 2010. He covers the Green Bay Packers for CBS Sports RapidReports and is a writer for Milwaukee Magazine.

Danny Goodman ‘03 works for the Hampstead Theater Company, Hampstead, NH. He tours the country performing live theater.

Jon Nosacek ‘03 graduated from University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a degree in engineering. He currently lives in Las Vegas and works for Fortunet, a company that makes games for the casino industry.

Katie O’Keef ‘03 graduated cum laude from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Katie is currently coaching junior varsity volleyball at Dominican High School.

Lauren Hammer ‘06 is a junior at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, double majoring in Spanish and religious studies. She will spend this academic year studying in León, Spain. Last summer, Hammer interned with Catholic Charities Legal Services to Immigrants, assisting with Spanish language interpretation in immigration cases involving women who are victims of domestic violence.

Theresa Nosacek ‘07 was part of a University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee team that studied Incan art and artifacts in and around Lima, Peru and Machu Picchu.

Emma Strode ‘07 graduated in 2011 from Divine Savior Holy Angels High School. A member of the National Honor Society, Strode was involved in the school’s drama department for four years, and was a member of Angelaires, the DSHA show choir. She currently studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Madeline Carlton ‘08 graduated from Shorewood High School in 2012 and attends University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, School of Education. She plans to utilize her computer and graphic art skills to work with autistic children.

Maddy Devine ‘08 graduated from Divine Savior Holy Angels High School and is attending DePaul University.

John Goodman ‘08 graduated from Marquette University High School in 2012. He is a freshman at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is a member of the rowing team.

Gabriel Langley ‘08 works at the Hartford Municipal Airport and is an aspiring pilot. He has been playing trumpet since his 5th grade year at St. Robert School and is passionate about jazz music.

Kienan Knight-Boehm ’09 qualified and participated in two national forensic tournaments, representing Marquette University High School.

Barbara (Davis) McGill ‘57 was named the Greater Milwaukee Association of Realtors “Realtor of the Year” for 2011. McGill has been named Wisconsin Realtors Association Instructor of the Year twice and has also received the Greater Milwaukee Association of Realtors Distinguished Service Award.

Chuck Nagle ’61 was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a player. Nagle was the Milwaukee County Player of the Year while at Marquette High School and was All-Big Ten and Third-Team Academic All-American at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ryan Bremner ‘90 was awarded the 2012 Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award and the Daniel Katz Dissertation Fellowship for 2012-2013. He is working on a doctorate degree in social psychology at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. His first doctorate degree was earned in philosophy at the University of Bonn, Germany.

Matthew Haas ‘98 was given the Grassroots Conservation Leadership Award by the Audubon and Chicago Wilderness Habitat Project. Haas has formed the “Friends of Busse Woods” to support ecological habitat restoration through partnering with local corporations. He oversees twice-monthly workdays at the Woods in addition to working full time as a certified financial planner.

Marquette High School recognized the following St. Robert School Class of ‘08 alumni at their 2012 Senior Awards Convocation: David Demet, Joseph Jarosz, and John Goodman - Presidential Outstanding Academic Excellence Awards, David Demet and Paul Scheid - Scholar Athletes, Edward Linn - Conclave Leadership Xavier Award and Joseph Jarosz - Jesuit Honor Society Spirit and Service to Yearbook as an Editor.

Adam Kessenich ‘08 was selected all-state second team for boys’ volleyball his senior year at Shorewood High School. He also earned all-tournament honors and helped lead the West Allis Lightning 18’s club team to a national championship. Adam is attending St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA, studying engineering and playing volleyball for the Bees.

Thomas Pech ‘08 was selected by the Shorewood High School staff for the Brady Corporation Academic All-Stars program. Pech received a $1,000 scholarship from Brady Corporation. He attends Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.

Augie Haas is one of the most active young musicians in the music scene. Haas started playing the horn at age ten, and after touring the U.S. as a teenager with Wisconsin’s musical ambassador group, “The Kids from Wisconsin,” Haas knew he wanted to become a professional trumpet player. Since those days of youth, Haas has proven himself a composer (he formed the band South Nine Ensemble and co-founded Playtime Music LLC. to expose younger audiences to jazz), performer (alongside the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Shakira, Disney, The Temptations, Rihanna, Bruce Hornsby, the Milwaukee Symphony Pops, to name a few), and teacher (private lessons, group lessons, clinics, guest artist appearances, and master classes). Despite his busy schedule, Haas took time to answer some questions for Blueprint.

Give us a snapshot of your life in the arts.When thinking about this question, it is hard to know where to begin. The arts/music is a lifetime endeavor, and I am constantly trying to become better and grow as a musician. Currently, I am fortunate to say that each day is a little different. I am either touring, recording, or playing the NYC music scene. While each day is a little different, I am fortunate to say that one thing remains the same–I love what I do and am lucky to play the trumpet for a living.

What is one of your fondest musical memories?One of my fondest musical memories was playing The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. It was an amazing, and nerve-racking feeling to play on national television. It is overwhelming to know that millions are watching and you have one chance to get it right.

What inspired you to write a song for Karin Hanson?(When math teacher Ms. Karin Hanson retired last year after 32 years at St. Robert School, Haas composed a special song for her. You can download the song by going to www.strobert.org/school and clicking on Blueprint.)

To be perfectly honest, I married an amazing teacher and gained a whole new respect for how giving teachers are with their time and dedication to their students. After more than 30 years of teaching, Ms. Hanson deserves much more than a song. Thinking back, I am not sure I was the “model student” and may have caused a grey hair or two – the song was just my little way to say thanks.

When and why did you start playing?I started playing at St. Robert in 5th grade! I had begged my parents to let me play an instrument, but when my four other siblings painfully never passed the “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” phase, my parents had no intention of letting me pick up an instrument. Luckily enough, I ended up not being able to play sports for a little while due to an injury, so my parents finally agreed and actually picked the trumpet for me. My dad thought the trumpet suited the name “Augie.”

What advice would you give to beginning musicians who are nervous about performing?I still deal with performance anxiety to this day! That being said, the more you do it, the more comfortable you get. One thing that has really helped me is when you practice, pretend you are performing. Second, the colloquial saying is true–practice really does make perfect. I practice hours every day. Finally, I would tell beginning musicians to go for it. It is possible, and when you do play, it is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

Who are some of your favorite musicians?Without a doubt, Louis Armstrong is my favorite and most influential musician. I try and listen to as much music as I can and go through different phases. Lately I have been listening to a lot of Sara Bareilles, Stevie Wonder, and The Beatles.

St. Robert of Newminister Parish was incorporated in 1912. The first Mass was celebrated July 6, 1913, in a small wooden structure on the south side of Capitol Dr. (then Mineral Springs Rd.) and Maryland Ave. By October 1913 Mass was being celebrated in a new building on the northeast corner of Maryland Ave. and Mineral Springs Rd. (the present school building). In September 1915 St. Robert School began on the second floor with two Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa as faculty.

Parishioners wanted a “real” church but were detoured by the need for a parish house (1917), a convent (1924) and addition to the convent (1935), and an addition to the school (1927). Finally, in 1936 ground broke for the present Lombardy Romanesque Church. The first Mass was celebrated Christmas morning 1937.

Since that time there have been additions to the school, parish house, and convent (now the Parish Center) (1958-62).

The parish has been served by seven pastors - Msgr. Farrel P. Reilly, Rev. Gerald E. McGinnity, Msgr. Frank M. Schneider, Msgr. Harold O. Prudell, Rev. Richard J. Cerpich, Rev. John J. Pulice, and Rev. Dennis A. Dirkx, the present pastor who also serves Holy Family Parish, Whitefish Bay.

During the Centennial year a presentation by Milwaukee historian John Gurda, a concert - by Frank Almond - parishioner and concert- master of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, sale of the Centennial ornament/sun catcher of the Rose Window, premiere of an original Centennial hymn - lyrics by parishioner Katie O’Brien ‘62, and installation of a statue of St. Robert of Newminister, sculpted by parish-ioner John Balistreri ‘71, in the main vestibule of the Church have been part of the celebration.

The primary liturgical celebration of the Centennial was a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki October 14, followed by a reception catered by Katie Pandl ‘71.

The final celebration of the Centennial year will be during Advent, when the St. Robert statue will be blessed. The Church building will celebrate its 75th anniversary on Christmas Day.

Listen closely around St. Robert School at dusk on a summer night and you’ll hear the sounds of our chattering chimney guests. We have identified chimney swifts living in the big chimney on top of our school building! Classified as “Near-Threatened” by conservationists, these are fascinating birds that fly acrobatically and migrate to the Amazon basin each winter. They roost inside chimneys, and groups of them have been summering in our school chimney for at least the last seven years. At dusk, they swoop down and seem to free-fall vertically into the chimney, to roost there for the night.

The crowd at St. Robert School Movie Night got to see this amazing bird show, and enjoyed hearing more about these birds from local expert Paul Hunter. Hunter, who leads the Lake Park Birders, has been counting our St. Robert birds for years. We were invited by the Lake Park Birders to attend the annual “Swift Night Out” (a national count of chimney swifts) in September, and a crowd of parish members, students and their families and teachers watched over 425 birds free-fall into our chimney!

Would you like to see this amazing natural phenomenon? Watch for news about next year’s “Swift Night Out,” to be held in late summer or come by the school on a summer evening just a few minutes before dusk and watch the swifts dropping into the chimney.

Celebrating

Julie Demet and Anne Linn will graduate from St. Robert School this year, marking a significant milestone for their two families. Anne’s parents, Jim ‘67 and Jean Linn, have been school parents for the past 29 years! They started with their eldest child, Joe, in 1984. Anne is the youngest of their eight children. Don ‘70 and Mary Demet have had children at St. Robert School since their eldest child, Lauren, started in 1988, making this their 25th year. Julie is the youngest of their six children. These families - with their combined fourteen children over nearly three decades - have shown incredible dedication and commitment to Catholic education.
