Men’s newAccessory2

Unlike before, these days, men are so obsessed with their look which has led men to doing and wearing things that were

once considered to be taboo. Men have started visiting spa, using facial firming products and to have that sophisticated

look, men with class go for accessories that add a little touch of glam to his look. One of the accessories adopted by men is the use of scarves. Scarves add a definite charm and sex appeal to their look. TheThere are few reasons why most African men that are familiar with scarves don’t wear it, and one of the reasons is the myth behind men wearing scarves because they believe that scarf is a woman’s thing. Lightweight Linen Scarves protect our neck from the sun and sand when crossing the Sahara according to Antonio, a writer of “The art of MANLINESS.

When I say scarves, I do not mean the scarves our grandparents used to tie back in their days. Scarves are worn by men the same way women wear theirs with a slight as a matter of fact, men hardly tie their scarves. Most men’s scarves are made from a solid or patterned cut of cloth and its approxi-mately 10 inches wide, 70 inches long. If you are looking for scarf to wear, lookout for scarves that match your outfits, but if you are too afraid of col-ors, get yourself a good quality grey Cashmere and according to Mimi a writer of La Mimi, it goes with what-ever you are wearing. The longer the scarf, the more style you can make out of it.

The moment you make your imperfections unseen, by then you have umbrage the commencement of true love Zereth ex-plicated. To every lover there’s an as-sorted elucidation of

True love which lodges in divergent hearts regarding the region they construct their re-lationship upon. The universe we are as a whole, has forgot-ten the real elucidation of the word love. On their tongues everything about love are says but without acting in accordance to what they express. Love has been agonisingly folded molested abused and crucified by all masculine paragons and feminine recipi-ents. There are very few people who know what true love is. Just as salt is present in every cooked food soup but it has range, so love permeates every part of creation but we treasure it more than some does. For every individual to define love it is multi dimen-sional perspectively. We shouldn’t await for an atomic expectation of an impeccable def-inition from someone who loves for the sake of aesthetic elements : parcels and monetary included, to juxtapose true love as some-thing correspond with another individual whose loves existence candidly Base on tru-est affection. It is entirely different. As i can’t skip off, i represent a million heart

“As an anthropologist, i have attained various reasons why must relationship has ended dramatically and distratously.”

that proclaims the banner of true love, cherish the heart that truly loves and respect various compan-ionship norms. As myconscience could judge, my love elucidation goes thus, love is the divine power of attrac-tion in creation that harmonizes, unites, binds together two heart of different sexual characteristics. Not the generation of ours that homosexualism has been granted the imprimatur to operate in our midst. May thy lord forgive!

Who is aPerfect Partner?

A perfect partner is he who remembers us when all others forget us? who will still be with us when most people abandon and ignore us ? A perfect partner has an efficacious heart towards loving.

A perfect partner may not be the perfect per-son about whom you are dreaming of rather, it is someone who has a heart in accordance with the FBFW theory of love “For better, For worse”. And with Efficient attention, and moreover, is ready to invest in creating

functional harmony with you. Ordinary love is selfish, vindictively planted in desires of satisfactions. True love is without condition, with-out boundary, without change. When you are in love your sight is blind-ed to all imperfections human heart is gone forever at the transfixing touch of love.Today, you can soundly hear it from the tone and tenor of youth around, how they have ridiculously turn love to something irrational. Without an affection, they will embark on a relationship journey. Some will be like “if you can buy me shawarma and coke your love propose will be consider instantly.

Perfect Partner? If you can take me to some places i will accept you by all means” Many of them say “I love you” one day and reject you the next day due to the mile-stone of some features like if you ain’t muscled financially or some other qualities they expected. Infact, love has transformed to an agreement like a law affidavit, whereby you tender offers and failure to do so, i quit will be the judgement afterwards. Not until you exhibit sexual satisfac-tion before true love comes on verge, love doesn’t rely on sex-ual scenario. This has been the substantial milestone why i put my fingers across my lips look-ing like a young child confessing love watching different scenario whereby influx love tales is been put into practice .It has reach a certain stage whereby most people doubt the existence of true love whereas they have been the course of

their relationship catastrophe. As an anthropologist, i have attained vari-ous reasons why must relationship has ended dramatically and distratously. I would say it is because the significant factors that spices up a successful relationship doesn’t implore in theirs. Therefore, in any love or relation-ship practice, it is highly mandatory to deploy the following attributes of True and uncondi-tioned love into the midst of our love play. Ac-ceptance, mutual respect, trust, Communi-cation. These are the ingredients of a healthier relationship. Conclusively, love doesn’t con-flict with age, appearance or other consider-able factors, love basically have to do with the heart affections. Let’s move away from the demeanour of turning love to a draft game, it’s preferable not to be in love than to hurt in love let’s love by respecting the love principles. Let’s remember life is only life when love is the pride. If not that time is superior to human

I used to love attending weddings till three years ago. The last wedding I attended was in March, 2012. By all standards, it was a wonderful wedding, the amount spent on the wedding would feed a community for months, the decorations and the cake alone was magazine cover gorgeous, but

that is not the reason why I am writing this article. If weddings could be this beautiful emo-tional affair and most times, as in the case of Africans, an insanely expensive affair, why then are most men scared to walk down the aisle and say “I do” to that woman they would want to spend forever and a day with? The reason why I stopped attending weddings was because the last wedding I attended made me realize that some weddings weren’t just worth it. The lady in question that got married, slept with my friend on the eve of her wed-ding and this friend wasn’t even her husband. I went with my friend to the wedding and he’d bragged to me that he was going to sleep with her, and I walked in on them, shocked, for I was reading the beautiful words she wrote on their wedding plan-ner, professing love to the man she would saying ‘I DO’ to the next dayOver the years, the following reasons are what I have come to accept as the main reasons why men are scared to say ‘I DO’:COMFORT ZONE EFFECTNo one would willingly give up their comfort zone for uncer-tainties. When a man knows that he can get any woman he wants without any kind of com-mitment, he wouldn’t be think-ing of having to commit to one woman, let alone walk down

the aisle with one. This fault isn’t entirely for the men alone, some women would get so desperate to the point of giving a man hus-band benefits without the ring; they would cook, wash, spend on him, make love to him anyhow or anyway he wants and would even make the mistake of getting preg-nant for him, little do they know that having a child for him isn’t the only thing that would make him stay. MARRIAGES ARE EXPENSIVEAsk any man of marriageable age right now why he isn’t married and you’d hear them telling you how expensive marriages are, and he definitely won’t be wrong. It’s only here in Africa that people get married, forgetting that after mar-riage comes the reality of having

to care and cater for a family. Some ladies drive their men to put their bank accounts in the red just to have that magazine cover mar-riage. When did marriage become a competition to outdo Amaka and Bisola’s glam marriage. A proper marriage doesn’t have to put your bank account in the red. What happened to having a small wedding within your budget?

‘Ask any man of marriage-able age right now why he

isn’t married and you’d hear them telling you how expensive marriages are’

When did marriage become a competi-tion to outdo Amaka and Bisola’s glam marriage. A proper marriage doesn’t have to put your bank account in the red. What happened to having a small wed-ding within your budget? And please if you don’t have the means, stop trying to have a wedding like the ones you read about on wedding magazines. As a man, you start saving for your wedding, the day you know that the woman you’re cur-rently with is the one you’d want to spend the rest of your life with, don’t wait till you propose to her before you start saving up for the wedding and please, set a target of the amount you’d want to spend on the wedding.THE INFIDELITY SCAREThis is on the mind of every man when they meet a woman they are deciding to settle down with. Social networks have made infidelity so easy and enticing. You can cheat on your partner via all the so-cial networks and they would never know or find out. A friend of mine met a girl on one of the bbm channels, he and this girl connected from the first hello and they talked non-stop for 3 months before they finally agreed to meet in person. She was in Port Harcourt and he was in Abuja, he sent her the fare to come and see him and she showed up. They had fun, but the man thinking he was in love with a beautiful woman, decided to show her off to his friends, that was when Pandora’s box got opened. One of his friends that he intro-duced her to was the woman’s brother in-law. She was married to his brother, and she lied to my friend that she was single. This is just one of the many unfaithful stories that pervade social networks, but that’s not to say every lady you meet on social networks are unfaithful. THE CHILD MAN Some men may look big but haven’t really grown up. They are still not ready to settle down, they just like the fast life of hav-ing to bed different women every day of the week, so the notion of being with just one woman scares the devil out of them those men are commit-phobic. Some Af-rican men are groomed to be fathers and not husbands. It takes the right woman to make a willing man to want to commit.

K01’s Autobiography

Teach yourself how to Cook

Ingredients:• 600g Egusi (Melon) seeds• 2 cooking spoons red palm oil• Beef: Best cut and Shaki (cow tripe)• Fish: Dry Fish and Stock Fish• 3 table spoons ground crayfish• Pepper and Salt (to taste)• Vegetable: Nigerian pumpkin leaves, spinach

or bitter leaves• 3 small stock cubes• 1 Ogiri Okpei (traditional locust bean sea-

soning: optional)Before you cook Egusi Soup:Before preparing the soup, soak the dry fish for about half an hour. If you are using the very tough stockfish, boil it for 20 minutes and leave in the pot with the hot water to soak for about an hour. If using the softer stockfish, you can just soak them in coolwater till you can break them apart with your hands. When the fish and stockfish are soft, debone and break them into sizeable chunks.Much closer to your cooking time, grind the egusi with a dry mill. Grind the crayfish and the dry pepper separately and set aside. Wash the vegetable to be used. Cut into tiny pieces.Boil the shaki, stock fish and dry fish in 1 litre of water with the stock cubes till they are well done. First sign of a done shaki is that the cuts will start curling on itself.Wash the beef to be used for the soup, add it to the pot and cook on medium heat till done.

Cooking Directions:There are two main methods of cooking egusi soup. These we will call oil before egusi (Fried Method) and egusi before oil (Caking Method). Egusi Before Oil (Caking Method):This method produces a healthier egusi soup as there is no frying involved. It requires less oil too. 1. In this method, as soon as the shaki, fish and

meat are done, remove them from the stock (water used in cooking the meat and fish) and place in a different pot or plate.

2. Add the ground egusi to the stock and stir. If the stock from cooking your meat and fish

is not enough to give you a medium consistency, add some water to get the consistency of evaporated milk or a bit thicker. It will not be as smooth as evapo-rated milk though.3. Cover and cook till the egusi cakes. Stir and add a little bit more water. watch it closely so that it does not burn.4. Repeat step 3, adding only a

small quantity of water at a time. After about 25 min-utes, you will notice the clear egusi oil coming to the surface of the soup.5. Add the red palm oil and bitter leaves (if it is your choice of vegetable), pepper and salt to taste and cook for about 7 minutes. You know it is good to continue when the palm oil and egusi forms a good blend of light yellow colour.6. Add the cooked meat and fish. If using pumpkin leaves or any other soft vegetable, add it at this time and stir the soup.7. Add salt to your taste, stir and leave to simmer for 2 minutes maximum.8. Turn off the heat. Leave to stand for about 5 minutes before serving.

‘ The egusi soup is best served with Garri (Eba), Semolina Fufu, Amala, Cassava Fufu or Pounded Yam.

CharacterBy Zereth Muna

The true test of character is not how much we know what to do, buthow we behave when we don’t know what to do.(John W.Holt Jr).Character is more described than defined. A person’s character can bebuilt or decided when negative events hits him/her. The devastatingstate of today’s society (bribery and corruption) is linked to thecharacter of its inhabitants and will only be changed through the samecharacter of its inhabitants.Character is the mental and moral qualities distinc-tive to anindividual. “Plurah” defines character as a habit long continued.Christians defines character as exhibiting of the fruits of the HolySpirit which are love, joy, peace, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. In formation of an individual’s character, Parents,peer-pressure, religious groups, education and the society plays avital role in influencing such an individual but the actual formationof a person’s character lies in his/her hands. The 9 let-tered wordhave destroyed lits of homes, friendship, organization even the societyas a whole.Humility, honesty, reliability, self-discipline, modesty, competent, self control are examples of good charac-ter traits whileanger, pride, greediness and the like are examples of bad charactertrait. Imagine a world where people wouldn’t be judged by the colourof their skin rather by the content of their character, it will bedisastrous due to the percentage of individuals with negativecharacter traits in the world.Acquisition of knowledge might take one to a high position andgive another absolute power in a different discipline but CHARACTERwill make maintenance of such positions possible or not and draw selfrespect.

Exclusive Interview With Honorable Odeneye Kekinde

BM: Can we meet you Sir?Honorable: My name is Odeneye Kehinde, a member of the House of Reps. I represent Ijebu Ode Odogbolu and Ijebu North-East Federal con-stituency. I am a Chartered accountant, a Chartered institute of taxation as well. I have a Master’s degree in Finance. I was born in Lagos but I grew up in a town called Ogbogbo in Ijebu North-East local government. I lived with my paternal grand-mother who is now late so I did my primary and secondary school in Ijebu while living with my paternal grandmother thereafter I went to Lagos state polytechnic, and I have diploma certificate in accountancy, I did icon’s exams and I later I went to Lagos State Univer-sity for my Masters.I started with a small firm that belongs to my Uncle who I later lived with. He was my role model in becoming a Chartered Accountant. I worked with him in his firm from 1990 to 1998. I qualified in 1997, precisely in 1998, a year after my qualification I joined the firm of Ernst & Young . Ernst & Young is one of the first three accounting firms in the whole world. I worked there as a manager in the tax department. It’s a consulting firm so I was involved in tax consultation back then.In 2004, I left there for Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) and I was there for about three (3) years. In September 2007, I left NBC for LMN Erics-son, the telecommunications giant. While in NBC, I worked as the tax in-vestment and forex manager. The opportunity to work at the NBC took me round Nigeria because they have plants in almost all the states of the Fed-eration. In LMN Ericsson, I was the manager in charge of tax and forex. In December 2009 and early 2010, I join politics, active politics. Before then I have always been involved in one political activities or the other. I had friends that were in politics though I was always been supporting their activities but I hated politics with passion then. Because then I be-lieved that yes you could still impact without necessarily been in politics so the little I could do with my salary I was doing for people in terms of payment of school fees. I had the opportunity of been the President of my community youth association so that gave me an opportunity of impacting more on the societies and the communities.I realized that the people that were representing us were not better than me. The whole thing started as a party back then when my friends were telling me to come and join politics but I have been running away. I told them NO, if you have anybody that is interested just let me know and I will support the little way I have always been supporting. He continued pressuring me to join politics. On getting home I told my wife that this is what someone just said, well my reason for telling her was for her to convince me that I shouldn’t go into it. But rather she said if you are okay with it then go ahead, as of that time I haven’t left ERICSSON. So at the point we made the decision to join, myself and my wife wasn’t looking at how much we have in our accounts to spend but as God will have it, ev-erything went smoothly. My journey to this particular moment has been a God made journey. Though it has not been too easy but even when it becomes hard, there’s a way God has always come into it and make it much simpler and easy.Member of the House of Representative

Page 28: Bmmagazine nigeria september 2015 issue online version 1

Before I wasn’t interested in politics but later I got inter-ested for reasons, and those reasons are; 1. For how long do we continue to be an armed share crit-ics? Why don’t you just make yourself available if you know that you have the potential to do it better? Making yourself available is one thing and people choosing you is another thing entirely. If the people don’t choose you well you can say to yourself that at least I made myself avail-able but the people didn’t choose me, that to me is better than you thinking that you can do it better but you are not available. So if you are not available, how are you sure that you are better than the people you are criticizing and do you even need to be criticizing if you are not making yourself available. 2. Politics to me is a bigger platform to do more and bet-ter than I was doing with my little income and the limited opportunities I had back then. So I saw politics as a big-ger platform for me to advance and to also move bigger in what I believe in. What i believe in, in the sense that you can never rest if the people around you are not resting. You can never be satisfied if the people around you are not satisfied and you should not feel relaxed if the people around you are not relaxed. If you are laughing and the people around you are crying then you are not just living to me and that is just my own thinking and philosophy. When I then looked at it from those perspective I said to myself that fine, If I make myself available and I am cho-sen, it will give me an opportunity to operate on a bigger platform so that I will be able to put smiles on the faces of my people.BM: Do your parents support this profession?Honorable: Unfortunately, I do not have parents, but if they were to be alive it could go either way, they may sup-port and they may not support but I think what is more important is my own vision and my own mission. I am very sure what would have been their fear is that “Oh don’t let them kill you and don’t let them do this and those kind of things, its bad, it’s this, it’s that”. That is what might like-ly be their reason and they might probably discourage me from going into it but I think I would also have had enough reasons with this vision and mission of mine to be able to convince them that I need to go into it.I refused to carry everybody along in my family aside my wife. My wife and a cousin of mine are the two people I told and I informed that “look, this is what someone said, this is what I want to do”. I refuse to tell anybody because if I had told them that I wanted to go into politics, and they have the fear they will say “don’t go”. If I did not go, would I have been where I am today? No.If I did not go and I am not where I am today and someone else is occupying somewhere i think I should be and

he is not doing the job very well I will not be happy with my-self and I will not will happy with them.BM: Would you like to share some the challenges you have faced in politics.Honorable: I don’t think there is any venture in this life that is smooth. Even the road to success is very rough and I think you can only appreciate it when it is rough. If ev-erything comes so simple, cheap and easy, it is very possible that you will not appreciate it and you will not appreciate God. It’s been up and down. This is someone that has been involved in politics and has never participated in politics, leaving the comfort of the office environment to join poli-tics. The kind of people in politics are quite different from the people you have in your office. The expectations of the people in your office is quite distinct from the people out there in politics. The behavior of people in politics is dif-ferent from the people in your office that you are used to. That is a routine thing, goals are set, you have goals that will be used to determine you promotion. Here the cost is big and bigger than those limited goals. Here your failure is not determined by a little set of people, lots of people are in-volved in this case. So when I was going in, I expected chal-lenges, I was ready for the challenges but I couldn’t image what the challenges could be. I was only sure that I would overcome but how I would overcome wasn’t certain to me. I don’t know how the challenges will arrive and who might bring the challenges. but I thank God for how far He has taken me because the challenges have come and I have been able to surmount. It is true that you can not satisfy every-body and what is most important to me is to satisfy my con-science and to satisfy the part I have with God that this is what I want to go and do.So far so good I am comfortable.

Greater thanks also go to my constituence. For when they complain, it’s a challenge for you to be able to do more be-cause if there were no complaints, you will see yourself as a champion while you have not even achieved anything. So it is good that they are complaining and that makes me want to do more for them because I see that as me not arriving where I want to be yet, so bigger thanks to them for that. And for the continuous support they have been giving us, this has been a kind of encouragement for me to be able to do more. So yes challenges come but God has been there to take care of the challenges.BM: During the 2015 elections, we heard you contested against a very strong opponent, how did you manage to win the election?Honorable: First and foremost, it wasn’t just about con-testing against PDP but even getting the ticket to repre-sent my party APC, was also very tough. It wasn’t easy but I had the faith and believe that whatever God will do, God will definitely do. So getting the ticket to rep-resent APC and winning the general elections, was just God and I reference Him all the time for this. One thing that differential me from the rest of the candidates is that I have contested before, I know what it takes to contest and I know what I have been doing there and I also know what I have been able to do while I was in the office. God gave me the opportunity to achieve alot during the first time I was elected and those were the things that were able to convince alot of people in terms of empowerment programmes, in terms of constituency project, educa-tional support, community support and so on. There were many things I was able to do that people can actu-ally point at and people knew that if trusted and honor-able members can do all these with the limited resources, with the limited experience, and limited opportunities, if you give him another chance he will definitely do better. I think these are the things they looked at to compare me with the other contestants. Alot of people told me later that “we looked at your modesty, character, interaction and your contributions even before you became an Hon-orable and while you are an Honorable. So we believed that you would be able to do better and more” and for the fact that you have the experience which they believed will also count and it is counting already so they felt they should give me a slot and I will do better. As I said it was tough, but I had no fear. Right from the onset I had no fear, if God did not say I should go ahead, I wouldn’t have gone ahead. Every other person left APC for SDP aside me and Honorable Segun Williams. Two of us re-mained in APC, I don’t know what he saw but I know what I saw and the message I got from God. And the mes-sage was that stay there, it may be tough but you will scale through and that was why I stay put in APC.BM: We believe you are a very busy man but how do you separate work time from family time?

Honorable: Very challenging, it’s very challenging but thank God my wife and children have been cooperating well although it’s not that they are enjoying it very well but they are cooperating. I also try as a father to make myself available even when it is very tight for me. There are times I need to travel, I travel almost every weekend in the last three years. I have to travel every weekend just to make sure that I am closer to my constituence and even my home. They were not used to this before now so there is a need for me to manage and balance the two. Though it has not been easy, it has been very chal-lenging for me, it has been very risking but I have been able to manage and God has been very much available for me to able to move forward in this.BM: As an Honorable representing the Ijebu Ode Odog-bolu and Ijebu North-East Federal constituency, what is your plan for the youth over there?Honorable: I have always have plan for them and most of the programmes that I have done so far has been for the youths. And why the youths? That is because I don’t believe in the saying that “We are the leaders of tomor-row”, the youths are the leaders of today and that is why we need to take care of them right from the beginning, so that they can be good leaders tomorrow. That is why most of the programmes I have done so far has been concentrated on the youths. But not just because they are the leaders of today, we have so many youths that are educated, they have the power, the passion to be able to achieve alot and this is why I believe that if we give them the little support, they will definitely work on oth-ers to get to the destination. Most of the programmes we have had so far has been concentrated on the youths. That does not mean we have not done anything for the old. I have also tried as much as possible to accommo-date the old because at least the old also started from being the youths. And the fact that they are old doesn’t mean they have to be persecuted. They also have to be taken care of. But we believe if we take care of the youths, the youths will develop to take care of the old. That is why most of the programmes have been concen-trated on the youths.BM: Who is your role model?Honorable: I look up to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he is someone I admired so much and I still admire his lega-cies even to this moment, Moshood Abiola too also con-tributed his own quota to the development of Nigeria and not just South-West but the whole country, there are very few people I have looked at and have inspired me even when I was thinking of not going into politics, I have also looked at these people and said fine, for these people to have succeeded, you can also succeed. This has given me a kind of courage to also move forward in this political world.

Research shows that there are certain nutrients that many of us might not get enough of. So, if you have a hectic schedule like mine, here are four nutrients to focus on:

1

Vitamin D

The nutrient is important in supporting a number of processes in the body, including supporting healthy metabolism and endothelial function. One of its chief functions is in helping support bone health by assisting the body in absorbing calcium.Where to get it: Sunshine is the best natural source. Food sources include salmon, tuna, cheese, egg yolk and milk, though it can be difficult to get enough vita-min D through food alone. How much? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends a daily intake of 600 international units (IU) for adults ages 19 to 70; the recommendation for adults over age 71 is 800 IU daily.

This nutrient is one of the most overlooked, yet it’s critical to healthy blood clotting. Additional research shows that vitamin K may also support heart and bone health.

Where to get it: Green, leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, collards, Swiss chard, parsley and romaine; vegetables like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage; fish, liver, meat and eggs.

How much? The NIH recommends a daily intake of 90 mi-crograms (mcg) daily for adults ages 19 and older. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you’re on blood-thinning medica-tions.

Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHAIt’s no wonder the American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA twice per week. Among other health-supportive functions, Omega-3s help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system by maintaining cholesterol and triglyceride levels already within a normal range.* But while this nutrient is critical to the body, a busy schedule can make it difficult to cook fatty fish two times every week.Where to find it: Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, tuna and sardines; krill oil.How much? There is not current a recommended daily intake set by the NIH. If you’re not able to eat Omega-3 rich fish twice per week or are allergic to fish, supplementing with Herbalifeline® provides 336 milligrams (mg) of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids per serving. Tri-Shield® with Omega-3 fatty acids from Neptune Krill Oil (NKO®†) provides 45 mg of EPA and DHA.

This essential mineral is needed for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Magnesium supports nerve and muscle function, immu-nity, heart health, and bone health, as well as supports healthy blood glucose levels and bone strength. Yet how often do you ask yourself, “Have I had my magnesium today?” It’s important not to overlook this critical nutrient.Where to find it: High-fiber foods, including leafy greens, fruits (ba-nanas, dried apricots and avocado), vegetables, nuts (almonds, cashews), peas, beans, seeds, soy products (soy flour, tofu), and whole grains (brown rice, millet). How much? For adults over 19, the NIH recommends a daily intake of 310–320 milligrams (mg) for wom-en and 400–420 mg for men.

10 years in the industryThe famous TV presenter, Modupe Odegbami, is celebrat-ing her 10th year as a presenter. BMmagazine Nigeria was giving the opportunity to interview her and we are glad to share that with youBM: Tell Us a little bit about yourselfModupe Odegbami: My name is Modupe Odegbami , I am from Ogun State, Abeokuta preicsely. I am related to the popular Segun Odegbami , I am his first cousin. I did most of my primary and secondary schooling in Lagos then I move to the North.BM: Why did you choose to be a presenter?Modupe Odegbami: It started a couple of years, close to 10 years thereabout, I studied cosmetology and I had a shop I was running back then. There was a par-ticular day, I was watching a television programme, I noticed the presenter that was presenter that particu-lar programme was too rigid, strict and organized for an entertainment programme. And I felt like “This is too boring, can’t she do something new? Something crazy that will make people want to stay glued to her programme?” and then I said to myself that I could do this thing, I can be a presenter, I can talk to the crowd, I can make people laugh. Cos every time I am around my friends they don’t want me to leave. Then I said in a prayer, “I am going to be a presenter” and somehow I started. The first thing I started with was my mirror, then I wrote scripts saying stuffs like “Hi, my name is Modupe Odegbami”. All I started with was my mirror, me, myself alone. Later, I somehow got connected with Funmi David, my former boss. There I started a pro-gramme on a satellite cable TV, It was a free to air chan-nel. I must say that it wasn’t easy starting out in this industry because I had to follow him around for many months when he is going for shows. Somehow I was giv-ing the opportunity to present a particular programme, I remember vividly the first time I was given air time to present my own programme for three months. After one of the episode, one of my colleagues back then came to me and said “What type of rubbish did you just pres-ent, you are mixing English with Yoruba in an enter-tainment programme. You should be professional and you are not going anywhere with this “. Within myself I was angry then I said to God, this is what I want to do, I like this job. I somehow got the courage to move on and I said to myself that in one month he will come back and eats his words. Less than three weeks I

started, my programme got an advert. The pro-gramme he called rubbish got a sponsor advert. That is how I started. And the journey so far for the past ten years it has been awesome:BM: What has been the challenges you face in the in-dustry?Modupe Odegbami: Challenges are everywhere, in the banking sector, Police sector, Army force, every-where. But the basic challenge for a female is the op-posite sex, I handle it perfectly well. You will never be my enemy. I have been with Lagos State Television (LTV) for awhile, when I say awhile I mean a long while, and I can say it openly that I won’t and I didn’t date anybody in LTV, so I know how to manage it. You will never be my enemy neither will I date you. We will be friends, you will definitely end up liking me. I could manage that because I am used to tom-boy kinda attitude when I was growing up. I am used to been around men. I have never been harassed. You made a move on me, I won’t agree and that’s it. So that part of challenges doesn’t really get to me but the part of seeking for sponsorship, commercial for a show, produce a programme or direct it and at the same time present it, money and always dressing nice and good, those are also some challenges I have faced as a presenter. The male part of the challenges, I handle it perfectly well.BM: Would you like to share with us your highs and lows in the industry over last ten years?Modupe Odegbami: In a short while I have learnt so many things. Whereever you work don’t make close friends, make colleagues, don’t make intimate friends. Be real, be on a neutral level with everybody. Because that is the worst mistake I think I have made in my life. Don’t mix friendship with business.BM: What is the name of the programme you started on the cable TV?Modupe Odegbami: I started a programme called heart to heart on celebrity TV close to nine years ago.BM: Being a career woman and a mother, do you manage to keep them in balance?

Modupe Odegbami: Being a mother is ammazing. The best gift you can ever get in this world. I have been managing myself all these while, all these years alone.I love my life I can do whatever I like, I can eat anywhere I like but being a mother, I am actually responsible that’s the basic thing. Being a mother you have to be careful and caution and combining them together is actually easy. My daughter is a sweet girl, as a matter of fact I have two. one is my daugh-ter and the other one is my adopted daughter, my sister’s daughter. They are sweet children. When I am not working or not in the office I am with my children and if I am not with my children then I am in the church. I am not a club person. I rarely go for parties but of course I have fun. I defi-nately combine them positive but the most important is my daughter. I remember when I was pregnant, I had to quit my work, jobs were coming in, MC (Master of Ceremony), I had to quit everything. I said I am not doing anything until I have my baby. My main priority is my daughter. If you hold on to job tomorrow someone from somewhere can come and take over your job but no one can ever come and take over your daughter. Your daughter is the only thing you have left when you don’t have your job anymore.BM: If tomorrow your daughter says that she would like to be a presenter like you, would you support her?

I will run and follow her. As a matter of fact, I asked her one day and I said “Ire would you like to be a presenter? “ she said “hmn hmn yes” then I asked her if she would like to be a police officer? cause her dad is a Police officer and then she said “uhhh yes... no...” and I asked why “yes”, “no” and then she said “leave me alone mummy I want to be Ire”. So whatever she wants to become even if she wants to be a Pastor its okay for me as long as it is a call of God upon her life so be it. I will always help her. If she wants to be a dancer tomorrow... Kaffy is making money in it. So what-ever a child wants to be I just believe that parents need to support them because you can’t tell what they will become tomorrow. Don’t force your children to be a doctor when the gift of God to them is to be a Pastor. Whatever she wants to be I will definitely back her up.

“Oprah Winfrey is my role model in Overseas”

BM: Being a Presenter and a producer, which of them do you enjoy doing more?Modupe: I think I enjoy doing both, but I will say that I prefer presenting. Producing is not tough, its just script and telling them to take a certain shot but presenting is hard, its like broadcaster. People see you more. They don’t see the producer, producers are at the back of the stage but presenting is the high thing, it’s like broadcasting news. If you make a mistake, you are the person that they are see-ing , they don’t want to see who wrote the script. who they are seeing is you and that makes it tougher than producing a programme. Live shows are harder than recorded shows because viewers can be unpredictable. There was this particular live programme I was watching when a viewer called the show and said to the presenter “You too dey laugh, you just dey do anyhow, I know say you no fine you just dey wear heavy makeup”. and of course she is human and throughout the show her spirit went down. I felt like if I could catch that guy I will beat the hell out of him. It has happened to me many times but the thing is I don’t let it get to me. When they bring that type of attitude around-me, I’ll be like “se e mi ni mo ko ba ni? why are you angry with me? tell me the truth you like me” and before you know it the person will start laughing. The live aspect of presenting is hard because someone can just call in and

start blabbing rubblish especially if you have a produc-er that is not sharp to cut that person off quickly, and let you be embarrased on a live programme. So yeah presenting a live programme is tougher than producing the show.BM: If you weren’t a Presenter today, what would have been doing?Modupe: I would have been dancing. A professional dancer, If I knew that there was alot of money in danc-ing I would have been dancing. I love dancing, it’s a part of my life then. Like I said earlier on I am a cos-metology/ hair-dresser. I had a shop I was running then for many years and the truth is that I am still going back to it. You know presenting is for a particular pe-riod, if you don’t have a content then you are done. So I am still going to open my shop back and I will still go back to the cosmetology I studied. So those two profes-sions would have been one of my profession if I wasn’t in the entertainment industry.BM: What will be your advice to the upcoming present-ers that want to be like you especially now that you are celebrating 10 years in the industry?Modupe: It can be tough but I will be frank with you. Be focus. I hate this saying and I have said it many times in interviews, don’t date you superior to climb up. Don’ sleep around to climb because you will have to continue sleeping around to stay there. And I have a saying, its from Modupe Odegbami and if people are saying it maybe they get it from me. You can be with them and not join them and you can be with them and not be them. That’s my thing. “Eni to ba ba ja ri a je igbe” Yoruba proverb (meaning “If you walk with dogs you will eat feaces”) that’s because you want to eat feaces. So don’t ever sleep with your boss to climb up because you will have to continue sleeping with him or else you will drop. That is just my advice for you. Be fo-cus and don’t sleep with your boss. I know alot of people will hate me for this but I repeat, don’t sleep with your Oga (boss). Let them find that hidden talent that is in you. Pray and be hard working and God will take you there.BM: What has kept you this far in the industry?Modupe: Wow, Agidi (Stubbornness). I am a stuborn goat, not goat rat (laugh). What has kept me is God and that is the truth, my faith has kept me. I am a Christian and I am Human and I can misbehave sometimes but God has kept me because He is my foundation. I don’t pretend, I am a realistic person I don’t play fault play, I don’t play pranks. I am me. Being me has kept me, God has kept me and then the other thing I think has kept me is my talent. I am a crazy presenter. I am not common. I remeber when I first started, a particular presenter told me “What kind of presenting is this one? you won’t go far. you ness has kept me this far in the industry.

are mixing English with Yoruba”, but now you can see ev-ery other presenters are now mixing English with Yoruba. I will say I started it because way back then it was a pro-fessional phonetics speaking presenting. I started the free-styling “Kilonsele, how are you doing? “ so been me and God and stuborness has kept me this far in the industry.BM: Do you have any role model in the industry?Modupe: Yes I do, and my role models are both in Nigeria and outside the country. My role model in Nigeria is late, the late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya. She is not a presenter but she is a preacher. She was my role model like crazy. Then in the media here in Nigeria... (hesitated). Let me move to overseas, Oprah Winfrey is my role model but in Nigeria... All of them too dey serious (laughs). They are all too seri-ous minded people. But back then I used to like Jumobi Adegbesan, Kenny Ogungbe, ID Adeneye, they are male presenters though and they are my egbon (Elders). I don’t really have much role models in Nigeria.BM: Would you like to share with us your last word?Modupe: I don’t last last words because last words is for people that are about to die. I will say be you and don’t try to be anybody. Be yourself, create your own style, do your own thing, whatever people are saying now don’t give a hook, think about what you want or where you are going to, focus on God almighty, He is the only one that can lead the right way. Like I said earlier on, don’t sleep around to get up, you will come down. So be focus, trust God, be real and be stuborn like me and of course dress well.

I’m no longer shocked when I wake up to the news of a bombing. The tears no longer roll down my cheeks when I see the lifeless bodies of butchered women, youths and children whose faces still hold a mask of panic. Maybe its because I have received unnecessary and unwarranted training; maybe its because my heart has developed walls made of iron, coated with extra rust-proof steel for added efficacy. *Sigh* Its sad, but its the evil that befalls a person that is constantly forced to behold the same wickedness on the regular. It is unfortunate that we have forgotten our struggles for freedom from the chains that held us bound to the captivity of a race who consid-er themselves our betters, albeit, we succeeded only in removing the shackles from our hands and lands, the shackles which bind our minds are another matter entirely; they seem to gather forces every dawn. So now, we have turned on each other and divided ourselves into classes.

You are rich and I am poor; You are Igbo, I am Yoruba and He is Hausa; You are Christian and I am Muslim. You are mixed and I am full blooded. *sigh* So nobody is human anymore. Everybody is a class, we have objecti-fied ourselves by ourselves. When they ask us, we say its the way God made it, the natural order of things. We be living continually in tes-taments of old and blaming religion for all our woes. Religion is the culprit eh. The day it isn’t religion, it is politics, or our ancestors. Everything else but our-selves.I am human first before I am richI am human first before I am poorI am human first before I am YorubaI am human first before I am IgboI am human first before I am HausaI am human first before I am MixedI am human first before I am Full bloodedAnd if my skin is the colour of shiny coal and yours is the texture of raw vel-vet, I am human and so are you.

UNILAGDEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND STRATEGIC STUDIES, UNILAG: CALL FOR PAPERS The Department of History and Strategic Studies in the Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos hereby calls for papers for its 50th Anniversary Confer-ence scheduled for September 17, 2015. The Conference which has the theme: History and Nation-Building will hold in the Afe Babalola Hall, UNILAG, Akoka. Young academics and graduate students are especially encouraged to submit ab-stract and present papers at the conference.DESCRIPTION: After half a century of indepen-dence, the forging of national Integration remains a major preoccupation of the vast majority of Af-rican states. The task of forging a nation out of a multiplicity of ethnic nationalities has been daunt-ing, and ethnic and racial divisions continue to threaten the stability of many African states. Af-rican leaders have articulated numerous policies and programmes to promote nation-building, but the achievements have been fragmentation and disagreement have contributed a great deal to the Outbreak of violent conflicts across Africa, and by extension, the continent’s crisis of stability and de-velopment. Pluralism has thus constituted a major determinant of contemporary African politics.

University of Ibadan (UI)Not too long ago, the Nigeria’s premier university – University of Ibadan (UI) established in 1948, celebrated its 64th Foundation Day alongside the 2012 convocation ceremony with fanfare. At 64, Ibadan could be seen as a much younger university when compared with many prestigious universities across the world. For instance, this year, Harvard University which is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States of America (USA) celebrated its 376th years of existence, having being established in 1636. University of Oxford has no clear date of establishment, but record shows that teaching started in 1096, while the University of Cambridge which is the second oldest university in the English speaking world was set up in 1209.Against this background, how logical is it then to compare 64 years old UI with all these universities with long history and old academic trajectory? Perhaps this is where those who are worried that none of Nigeria’s univer-sities is rated among the best in the world are missing the point! Certainly, Nigeria still has a long distance to destination in terms of competing with the world best universities. Not that we are intellectually inferior, but because of the fact that we are deficient in infrastructure in an inclement environment! However, judging by the development in the institution in the last 12 years or so, it could be confidently as-serted that UI has been lucky in terms of leadership. Both at Council and Management levels, UI has been fortunate to have committed leaders who have been building assiduously on the past glory.
