Parenting the Divide

God’s Guide for Parents: Psalm 144: 9- 129 I will sing a new song to you, my God;

on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,10 to the One who gives victory to kings,

who delivers his servant David.From the deadly sword 11 deliver me;

rescue me from the hands of foreignerswhose mouths are full of lies,

whose right hands are deceitful.12 Then our sons in their youth

will be like well-nurtured plants,and our daughters will be like pillars

carved to adorn a palace.

Discipline:

Inductive Technique:

This is a disciplinary technique designed to induce desirable behavior by appealing to a child's sense of reason and fairness.

-It encourages desirable behavior or discourages desirable behavior by reasoning with a child-Involves Setting Limits-Includes demonstrating logical consequences of an action-Explaining, discussing, and negotiating-Getting ideas from the child abut what is fair

Discipline: Research on the Inductive Technique:

Inductive techniques are usually the most effective methods of getting children to accept parental standards (McCord, 1996).

In observational studies in a kindergarten, children whose mothers used reasoning were more likely to see the moral wrongness of behavior that hurts other people as opposed to simply breaking rules, than Children whose Mothers simply took away privileges (Jagers et al., 1996).

Power Assertion and Withdrawal of Love are both less effective than inductive reasoning in most circumstances and can also be harmful (Jagers et al., 1996).
