PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK

MARRIAGE & FAMILY

The daughter of a Kohein who marries a non-Kohein may no longer eat of the holy tithes

(Terumas Hakodoshim). Should the daughter of a Kohein become a widow or a divorcee

and not have children, she shall then return to her father's house as in her youth, and

she may eat from her father's (holy) bread.... (Vayikra 22:13-14)

The laws allowing the Kohein's daughters to partake of the holy gifts reserved

for the Kohein are suspended when these daughters "leave their father's house", i.e.

when they marry. Conversely, the sons of the Kohein continue on as Kohanim them-

selves, never severing their link with their father's house.

This law seems to suggest that marriage absorbs the woman within the house

of the man. Thus the man remains within his ancestral home, while the woman must

leave hers. Based upon this law, Tashbatz (1361-1444), a medieval Spanish Rabbi, ruled

that a woman adopts her husband's Minhagim (customs) upon marriage. Similarly the

Torah's two terms for a household are "Mishpacha" (family) and "Beis Av" (father's

house). Marriage is a merger of two into one - "they shall become as one flesh" - and

thus they must blend into one home, either his or hers. From what we see here, it is his

house that dominates. [Thus the custom - virtually universal until recently - that the

wife and children adopt the husband's surname.]

Yet when we examine the verse that originally describes marriage (Bereishis

2:24), we seem to learn otherwise. "Thus the man shall leave his father and mother

and adhere to his wife and they shall become as one flesh." Here it seems that the hus-

band leaves his family to join the woman. Isn't this contradictory?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA

OVERFILLING THE CUP OF HAVDALAH

There is a custom cited by the Rema to spill the wine of Havdalah, as a house

where the wine is freely spilled like water is clearly blessed. In practice, there is some

difference of custom on this matter. There are those who generously overfill the cup to

generate this sign of blessing, while others are careful not to spill out anything to avoid

waste. Others suggest that a proper Halachic compromise is to fill it all way to the top

to the point where inevitably some will spill over as the cup is handled. Additionally, the

Rema writes that as a sign of love for the wine of the Mitzvah it is customary to douse

the candle with the spilled wine rather than to blow the candle out, and to then dip

fingers in the wine and “rinse” the eyes with that wine. (See OC 296:1)

Dear Friends:

I hope this note finds you well.

I will be in Eretz Yisrael through Tuesday, May 16. The purpose of my trip is to participate

in my father's Hakamas Matzeivah and a memorial gathering in my parents' shul,

Chovevei Tzion. The timing of these events was chosen to coincide with a family simcha,

BH, the Lag B'Omer wedding of one of my parents' grandsons.

I am sorry to have to be away again, and I am grateful to Rabbi Rose for covering for me

during my absence. He can be reached at 410-499-8066, or at [email protected]. I am

grateful as well to Rabbi Yankel Herskovitz and Rabbi Duvi Rubin for giving the Amud

Yomi shiur, to Rabbi Shraga Goldenhersh for giving the Daf Yomi shiur and to Rabbi Nate

Miller for teaching between Mincha and Maariv .

This Shabbos, many shuls across the country - in conjunction with the OU - are dedicating

this week as "Shabbat Shidduchim", to address how we can do more and better for the

singles in our community. This is a welcome initiative, and one that I would have wanted

to participate in if not for my absence this week. I hope our shul will dedicate a Shabbos

to this topic in the coming months.

I look forward to seeing you soon. May we all merit to celebrate joyous occasions, in good

health.

Thank you for your friendship.

Dear Members:

We’re gearing up for Campaign Day May 21-22, and we’re looking for

everyone’s participation! $500,000 is a lot to raise and we need all the

help we can get. In addition to considering your own generous pledge,

we need you on campaign day - we need callers to get the word out

and create a special campaign atmosphere! We are going to call our

members and non-members to get the word out about our shul and

the integral role BJSZ plays in the Baltimore Jewish community!

Please visit the following link: www.volunteersignup.org/AP9J9 or

register in the office to sign up for an hour (or two, or three) to join our

call center at BJSZ any time from 2:00 pm Sunday May 21 through 2:00

pm Monday May 22. Please note we need almost 200 volunteer

hours!! Not your "thing" to make calls? Don't worry, we'll have every-

thing scripted for you and we will help you get comfortable. And we'll

have great refreshments all day. So please sign up, sign your spouse up,

sign your friends up, and come party! Thank you for helping to make this campaign a success!
