BOB “Bongo” BAIRD Trainer for Champs

May 25, 1949 – October 6, 2009 Hometown – Burlington, ON

If there ever was a man for all seasons, it must have been Bob “Bongo” Baird. In a sports career that spanned four decades, Bongo was the omnipresent fixture at major softball and hockey events.

In softball, he competed at the senior level with various Ontario squads, including the Grimsby Peach Kings and Burlington Cougars in the 1970s-80s. After his playing days he honed a new set of skills to become a valued and respected trainer.

When fastball diamonds became covered with the winter’s white fluff, it was an easy transition for Bongo. Strapping on snow tires to battle Ontario’s ever-changing environment, he provided medical training support to various hockey teams including Flamborough Juniors, Rockton Real McCoys, Brantford senior teams, and Oakville Blades Jr. “A” squad. For his efforts he was acknowledged as the Ontario Hockey Association 2007-08 “Trainer of the Year”.

It was on the fastball diamonds of North America, and indeed the world, that Bongo enjoyed his finest hours. Top teams valued his services, and as champions rise and fall, Bongo seemed to catch the up-swing with the best of teams. For the past two decades, softball’s elite Championship Sundays usually involved Bongo scuttling about in preparation for the “title event”. His alumni associations include Owen Sound Tiremen, Midland Explorers, Toronto Gators, Tampa Bay Smokers, Broken Bow Spirit, Orillia Riversharks, and the pinnacle – Team Canada—for ISF championships in Michigan, South Africa and New Zealand.

Bongo’s career, rubbing shoulders with and providing service to the best, probably earned him more championship rings than anyone in the game. He was a pro in his endeavors, and with his untimely passing on October 6, 2009, the fastball family lost one of its icons.

Bob was devoted to his wife Sandy and son Colin, and they and his extended sports families are familiar with his loyalty and dedication.

GEORGE RYDER Player provides payback

Born – July 22, 1960 Hometown – Delhi, ON

George Ryder has been involved with fastball for 44 of his 50 years – passion for the game is an understatement. For a quarter century, George Ryder toed the rubber in intermediate/senior softball ranks and led his teams to four Ontario titles, seven ISC State qualifier championships and competed with New Martinsville, WV in three ISC World Tournaments.

However, his mark on the game may best be remembered for his enthusiastic contribution back to the sport.

George’s coaching roles have included stints with Waterford Midgets and Jarvis Junior and Senior fastball teams, including a pair of Canadian Canada National Junior Championship titles (2002-03). Most recently he served as an assistant coach with the Team Ontario 19 and under squad that captured the gold medal at the North American Championships.

Through the National Coaching Certification Program, as a Level 3 softball coach, George has focused his attention on pitching, charting and scouting. His strong interest in these varied aspects of the game has resulted in his developing into one of the most technically sound fastball coaches in the area. In the OASA, George currently serves as a Vice-President, former chair of the Men’s Committee, and is a valued contributor to clinics and symposiums both provincially and nationally.

His personal commitment is to youth and peers, supporting softball in his local Haldimand-Norfolk area and across the province, encouraging participation, conducting clinics and presenting at workshops on pitching skills and team preparedness.

It’s said that “Those that can, do…. and those that can’t, teach.” However, George Ryder doesn’t fit that mould. Not only could he play the game, but is now selflessly sharing his collective experiences and knowledge in a teaching role in a huge payback to the sport.

“LEGENDS” CRITERIA Selections of individuals who have been afforded recognition as part of the Woodstock “Legends” tournament are based on varying contributions and for their fastball impact. Many considered for nomination as a “Fastball Legend” participated in the game in by-gone eras, when the opportunity to be selected to a national team were limited. Players who had an outstanding career in the

Ontario area – Dan Donahue, Bill Fidlin, Chuck Hendricks, Barry Musselman, Doug Neil, Dick Parker, Brian Stere, Dan “Doc” Werby, Dan Yantzi

Players who represented Canada with distinction at the international level – Bob McKinnon, Brian Paton, Ray Tilley

Players who had an out standing career in women’s softball, at either the local, national or international level – Marg Skillings, Karen Snelgrove, Lori Sippel

Individuals who made a significant contribution to the game such as coaches, sponsors, administrators, media - Terry Baytor, Bruce Bierman, Jack Fireman, Bill Horne, Bruce Huff, Larry Lynch, Joe Todd

True, unquestioned legends of the game – Dick Hames, Pete Landers, Steve Virag, Darren Zack

WELL DONE COMMITTEE! The term “legend” may be used loosely in many contexts. Given the contributions to fastball by the 28 individuals recognized in the seven years of this event, the word, synonymous with “fabled, famous, historic, celebrated, prominent” is used appropriately for the “Legends of Fastball” program.

HALLMAN “A” Division SEEDINGS AND ODDS TO WIN

1) Kitchener Hallman Rivershark Twins (3-2) – As defending Canadian Champs, and two-time defending ISC and Legends Champions, it would seem like a lock for Twins to be the odds-on favoured. Additions Jeff Goolagong and Rob Gray provide great pop at the plate. So be it- let’s go with Twins as sentimental favoureds. However, one slip at a key moment, a new Legends Champ will be crowned. 2) Chicago/NY Dominicana (4-1) – an international bench with blend of youth, speed, moxey and power. P Jeremy Manley, with his “A” game is tough and newcomer Sean Cleary has an opportunity to make his mark. 3) Midland Explorers (5-1) – ISC Host team is counting on a memorable year and this weekend is great test – could this be the year P Frank Cox carries a team –backup support from P Brian Urquhart and Mike Joseph. 4) Niagara Snappers (12-1) - On the cusp of teams trying to break into the top 20 rankings – in very deep this weekend and will need an upset to catch a playoff spot. 5) Elmira Expos (17-1) – It’s education weekend for the Expos – bragging rights on the line in key match-up with Snappers, but neither will be on the field for playoff round.

MTE “JUNIOR” ISC EMBRACES CHANGE for

2010 Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the

decisions made by the ISC Board of Directors have resulted in a major impact for the ISC 2010 Championships scheduled for Midland, MI in August.

Opinions shared vocally and on the internet are quick to criticize specific ISC regulations such as PRAWN designations, Out of Area players. More generally the championship schedule and length of the tournament, had doomsday prophets suggesting that these are nails in the ISC pine box.

However, the opposite may be happening. A resurgence in the number of teams vying for the ISC title may suggest that the future augers well.

Certainly, the experimental weaving of the ISC and the former ISC II (the “Deuce”)

will provide a whole new look. Yes, there will be some one-sided blowouts, but that can occur in any event with ten or more teams competing.

True fastball fans should, as a minimum, give the “new-look” Championship format a chance to establish itself.

With the migration of pitchers, there are more contenders in 2010 than in the last couple of years. The Hallman Rivershark Twins will be hard pressed to three-peat, and Harrah’s suggests that as many as 7-8 different teams have a legitimate shot to be playing in the elimination games on Championship Sunday.

Can’t wait to see what happens.

ABERDEEN “B” Division SEEDINGS AND ODDS TO WIN

1) Jarvis Travelers (3-2) - fastball’s biggest surprise as last year’s Gamblers become this year’s Travelers with a host of quality International players dotting the roster. Knocked on the door several times at big events- his year a legitimate contender with Aussie ace Adam Folkard and Canuck Trevor Ethier on the mound, and clutch performer Brad Rona at the hot corner. A win this weekend should result in top spot in next ISC rankings. 2) New York Gremlins (6-1) – always a contender, Gremlins assembled an offensive roster that will plate some runs for a pitching staff that could view 2010 as THE YEAR. Long-ball potential deep into the lineup. 3) Port Elgin Blue Devils (11-1) – subtle pressure on the defending ISC II Champs to narrow the “perception gap” between ISC and the former “Deuce”. This well-coached squad with chemistry has chance to provide P Scott Smith and Rob Fawcett with some runs to step up and grab a playoff spot for Sunday. 4) Owen Sound Verge Selects (14-1) – the Selects continue their upward climb to re-establish the Georgian Bay club in ISC elite. “D” will be busy in all parts of the park. 5) KW Cubs (15-1) – team has enjoyed successful seasons with consistent rosters and hopes to enjoy success. Needs sterling effort again Devils & Selects to grab playoff spot.
