APR 2 8Cand y

On November 25, 1963 , Mr. Dial D. Ryder made available forinspection by an agent of your Bureau a repai r tag which indicatedthat certain work, associated by Ryder vith the mounting on a r i f l e

and the sighting of a telescopi c sight, ....as performed by the Irving

Sports Shop, 221 East Irving Boulevard, Irving, Texas, for a roan bythe name of Oswald . That fact and others concerning this matter arereported a t pages 395-6 of the report of Special ~ n t Robert P.Gemberling, dated November 30, 1963, at Dallas, Texas.

We note that other reports of your i nvestigati on concerningthe above repair tag are set forth a t pages 65-6 and 654-6 of thereport of Special Agent Gemberling dated December 23, 1963, and a t

page 96 of Agent Gemberling •s report of March 101 1964. We also notemy le t te r to you dated February 21, 1964, your reply dated ~ h 27,1964, and the memorandum of your Dallas office dated Apri l 2, 1964, ~in response to the oral inquiry of Mr. Wesley J. Liebeler of our es taff . E

I t also appears that personnel of the Irving Sports Shophave been contacted by the United States Secret Service (SecretService Control No. 424) and the Dallas Police Department. (Seepages 252-4 of that Department s report of i t s investigation of theassassination of the President.) Mr. Liebeler has examined bothMr. Ryder and Mr • Greener, the owner of the Irving Sports Shop.

A reviev of the above documents indicates a need for furtherinvestigat i on as suggested belov:

l Ie would l ike to know whether or not your Agent was actua l lypresent when the tag was found. f so, we would l ike to know thecircumstances under which the was found. I f not, we would l iketo know i f your Agent asked Ryder when and under what circumGtances

he f i r s t became aware of the tag 's existence.

In this connection, we note tha t Officer F. M. Turner of theDallas Police Department reported tha t on Sunday evening, November 24,

1963, that Department had received a telephone cal l from one Ray John

of Channel 8 news, presumably in Dallas, advising that the news off ice

had received an anonymous phone ca l l in which the caller had sta ted

tha t he she) thought Oswald had had the r i f le sighted-in on November 21

1963, a t a cun shop at 211 or 212 Irving Boulevard. Officer Turner

reports tha t he checked and found the Irving Sports Shop at 221 EastIrving Boulevard. The Officer spoke to Mr. Greener time not indicated)who said tha t he and Ryder had discussed the matter but that neithercould remember having done any work for Lee Oswald or on the assassinat ion weapon. Mr. Greener said he would check his f i les for names and

re-contact the Dallas Police D e p ~ r t m e n t

Mr. John should be ~ n t e r v i e w e d in connection with the nnony::.._,ustelephone cal l he received. Consideration should be given to theposs ibi l i ty that Ryder himself may have cal led Mr. John. Officer Turner

might be able to supply addi t ional information. The anonymous ca l l mayhave come from Mrs. Whitworth see below).

In tha t connection, Hr. Greener said tha t a reporter for theDallas) Times Herald had told him tha t he had spoken to Ryder before

the FBI f i r s t came to the Sporto. Shop, i . e . , before the story appeared

in the newspapers on November 28-29, 1963. Ryder has denied to Greener

tha t he talked to this reporter .

We think that a complete investigation into the question of

how, when and where the story concerning the Irving Sports Shop f i r s t

came to the at tent ion of the press would be very helpful in making adetermination of the veracity of Messrs. Ryder and Greener.

2. e would appreciate fur ther investigation into the questior.

of when the work tag was rnnde out. i. his phase of the invest igat ionshould e conducted on the assumption tha t the tag was prepared prior

to the assassination, although consideration should be given to theother possibil i ty in connection with the investigation we have requested

in paragraph 1 above.

also note however that l•1r G r e c n ~ r to ld Officer Turner

that i t appca.red that the r i f l e in q u e ~ t i o n harl probably been brought

in b e t ~ e e n November 4-8, 1963. Greener also told Turner that he ~ u l dcheck his cash register receipts to see i f he could determine ~ h e n ther i f le was picked up and paid for . Ryder also noted that he had i t en

the repair tag in pencil , but he usually used a pen. He said heremembered picking up some orders in Dallas one day in the past ~ h e n he

did use a pencil in his ~ r k . t might also be possible to f ix ~ i t h i ncerta in l imits the date the tag ~ a s prepared by reference to i t s number,

even though Ryder has indicated that they do not use the tags in any

exact chronological order.

e ~ u l d appreciate additional investigation into the abovepoints and along ~ h a t e v e r other l ines you deem appropriate in order tohelp f ix the date on which the tag ~ a s prepared.

3· The significance of Officer Turner's report that Greener

had told him that the r i f le had been brought in b e t ~ e e n November 4-8,1963, is clear ~ h e n considered in connection ~ i t h your report onHrs. Edith Iilli ~ o r t h ~ h o said she had, on November 6, 7, or 8, 1963,

directed Lee Harvey s ~ d to gun shop one and one-half blocks from

her used furniture store. (Page 65 of Gemberling's report of

December 23, 1963.)

In connection v h Mrs . Hhi ~ o r t h s statements, ~ u l you

please advise (a) ~ h e t h e r she docs in fact have a grandchild ~ h i c h wasborn on or about October 20, 1963, and (b) ~ h e t h e r or not in November,1963, there vere any gun shops, other than the Irving Sports Shop,

within one and one-half blocks of 145 East Irving Boulevard, theformer location of Mrs. Whi tvorth 's Furniture Mart.

4. Please advise ~ h e t h e r or not your Bureau has ever receivedany indication that Lee Harvey Oswald ever o ~ e d any r i f le other thanthe weapon identified by your Bureau as K-l . e ~ u l d also appreciateyour advice as to the nature and extent of any investigation that you

may have made concerning that possibi l i ty.

5· In your l e t t e r to me dated March 27, 1964, you indicatedthat Mr. Jerry A. O s ~ l d as ~ e l l as other persons having the l as t nameof O s ~ < a l d residing in Dallas and vicini ty, ~ e r e interviewed and a l l

advised they had not taken a r i f le to the Irving Sports Shop to have atelescopic sight mounted. You noted that your investigation on th is

of one Jessie J Osvald, 2625 Stoval Street , Dallas, Texas, i t does not

indicate that Jessie J Oswald was ever interviewed to determine whetheror not he had had any \lOrk perfonned at the Irving Sports Shop on any

Oswald spoke to Marina in a foreign language, apparentlyapprising Marina of Mrs. Hunter's comments.

Matthian advised that he does not recall whether Mrs.Hunter mentioned exactly what i t was that Oswald needed forhis gun. He also stated that he does not recall whether Mrs.Hunter stated that Mrs. Whitworth referred Oswald to the

Irvington3

Matthian stated that when Mrs. Hunter remarked thatthe Oswalds entered a 1957 or 1958 two tone blue and white Ford,he asked her why she remembered the type car used by the Oswalds. He stated that Mrs. Hunter's reply was that Oswald, operating thevehicle, made a { f ' turn and was about to proceed in the wrongdirection on a one way street . Matthian did not recall whetherMrs. Hunter stated that she informed Oswald of the i l legal turnor he became aware of his error in some other way but he doesbelieve that Mrs. Hunter stated that Oswald was then instructedto back the vehicle down the street toward the Irvington SportsShop.
