Late Ashkenazi Ma’ariv Will Resume at the end of August
This coming Thursday night/Friday is Rosh Chodesh Av, which commences the period of the Nine Days. Our Rabbis teach us that, during these nine days leading up to Tisha B’Av, we accept upon ourselves additional customs of mourning. Below are some of those Halachot.
LAWS APPLYING TO THE NINE DAYS (August 5 – August 13)
A. During the nine days, one should not wash clothing, as it is not in consonance with the spirit of mourning. If one has young children and this is impossible, a minimal amount should be done.
B. It is prohibited to give adult clothing to a non-Jewish launderer during the nine days, even if the clothing will be returned after Tisha B’Av.
C. It is permissible to give clothing to a non-Jewish launderer before the nine days, even if the clothing will be washed during the nine days. However, one should not wear that clothing until after Tisha B’Av.
D. Washing of clothes for the sake of a Mitzvah is permissible. Therefore, if one must wash clothing for Shabbat, one may do so on the Thursday or Friday prior.
E. During the nine days, it is our custom not to bathe for pleasure. However, showering for hygienic reasons is permitted.
F. During the nine days, no shaving is permitted. If one’s business will be compromised by not shaving, they may shave until the week in which Tisha B’Av occurs.
G. Swimming is prohibited during this period.H. A woman may wash for the sake of her ritual immersion during this
time.I. One may not eat meat or chicken, or drink wine, during the nine days,
with the exception of Shabbat.J. One should not drink the wine of Havdala on Saturday night, but
should instead give the wine to a child to drink. However, if no child is present, he may drink the wine himself, or use soda, juice, or milk and recite She’hakol instead of Borei Pri Hagafen.
K. Meat may be eaten and wine drunk at a feast in honor of the performance of a Mitzvah, such as at a circumcision, a Pidyon Haben (redemption of the first-born), or the completion of a Talmudic tractate. If one wishes to complete a tractate in order to eat meat during the nine days, he must nevertheless take care that he does not adjust his pace of learning in order to complete the tractate during the nine days. During the week on which Tisha B’Av occurs, only relatives and a Minyan of ten close friends may eat meat at such a meal.
L. It is our custom not to say the &1**(%: (She’hecheyenu) blessing during the nine days, even on Shabbat.

BRS VOLUNTEER SECURITY TEAMOver the last few weeks, we have been reminded yet again that the threats to the safety and security of the Jewish and American communities are tragically real. Since 9/11, there have been 78 terror attacks in the US and it is clear that this is going to continue. In the aftermath of the Orlando attack, it came to light that the terrorist visited the site of the attack previously and also scoped out other possible targets. The presence of a vigilant security team is the single biggest deterrence to any possible future attack.
Six months ago, the synagogue created our volunteer security team with 10 individuals. Since then, our number has increased to 30 men and women. While that number is good, at a synagogue of our size, we realistically need at least double that, if not triple.
An application to join the team can downloaded from www.brssecurity.org. Your participation in this effort is desperately needed. Please join us as we protect what is most precious to us – you and your family.
TOMCHEI SHABBAT SUMMER FUNDS UPDATE
We are so grateful to all of you who have responded to our request for Tomchei Shabbat. Thus far, we have collected enough to cover almost two months, but we still need your help! Please know that donations of any size are greatly appreciated. The community working together will enable us to continue to provide food for our families that are struggling financially at this time with dignity.
BRS COOKBOOK!A group of women in the community are interested in putting together a Boca Raton Synagogue community cookbook with the proceeds going to help enhance our playground. Not only will this benefit your Shabbat table, but your children and grandchildren as well. If you are interested in participating and having your recipes included in this cookbook, please send in your best recipes with your name attached to either Sam Adler or Shira Menczer at [email protected]

SOCIAL ACTIONIn a sign of continually improving relations between the two neighboring countries, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry recently visited Israel and offered his government’s assistance to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Egypt’s proposal involves direct negotiations in which a working group consisting of Israelis, Palestinians, Egyptians, and Jordanians would develop confidence-building measures. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed Egypt’s initiative, and Israeli ambassador to Egypt Haim Koren , was quoted in the NY Times as saying “This is one of the best times we’ve ever had” in terms of cooperation between governments. “
Shoukry’s visit marks the first time an Egyptian foreign minister has visited Israel since 2007, and highlights the closer ties that have been forged between Israel and Egypt in the last few years under Sisi’s leadership, mostly due to increased military and intelligence
cooperation against Hamas and ISIS militants in the Sinai. Egypt has shut down underground tunnels between Sinai and Gaza in order to prevent the smuggling of weapons and fighters between Sinai-based ISIS militants and Hamas. Israel has helped Egypt’s campaign against Sinai militants by allowing more Egyptian troops and heavy weapons in the Sinai than their 1979 peace agreement technically permits.

In describing Pinhas, the Torah traces his lineage to Aharon ha-Kohen. Rashi explains that after Pinhas killed Zimri, people spoke derogatorily that somebody whose maternal grandfather (Yitro) was an idol worshipper should not have been the one to kill the leader of a tribe. Responding to these hurtful comments, the Torah reiterates that Pinhas also descended from Aharon ha-Kohen, a person beyond reproach. In all, 24,000 Jews sinned with the Moabite women—why then did Pinhas only go after Zimri, the leader of Shimon? Because while many sinned, only Zimri did so in such a brazen manner, in front of Moshe Rabbeinu, which led to Pinhas’s severe reaction. But if so, it appears that Pinhas was more concerned with Moshe’s honor than Hashem’s! Why then does the Torah laud his actions and attribute ending the ensuing plague to his merit? Hatam Sofer explains that the women of Moav also encouraged their Jewish companions to worship a Moabite deity. Hazal teach that an idol causes tum’ah to spread within the room in which it is found. Pinhas, a Kohen, was therefore unable to enter any of those homes. Because Zimri was so brazen and sinned out in the open, there were no idols present and Pinhas could therefore defend Hashem’s honor without transgressing any prohibitions. Those speaking derogatorily argued that Pinhas did not possess the kedushat kehunah since he descended from an idol worshipper. They claimed that Pinhas could have chosen to kill any of the 24,000 sinners but specifically chose Zimri so as to defend Moshe’s honor while not concerning himself with Hashem’s. The Torah therefore traces Pinhas’s lineage to Aharon to show that he did possess kedushat kehunah and therefore could not enter any other tent and for that reason alone, specifically chose Zimri.

Wine differs from other fruit juices in that while fruits require a berakhah of בורא פרי העץ and their juice requires a berakhah of ,בורא פרי העץ the proper berakhah on grapes is ,שהכל נהיה בדברוand nonetheless, the proper berakhah on wine is בורא פרי הגפן. The Gemara (Berakhot 35b) explains that wine differs from other fruit drinks in that the resulting beverage derived from grapes is not only superior to the fruit from which it came (a property the Gemara asserts is also true of olive oil) but also gladdens the soul. Normally, when a person eats a meal with bread, the berakhah of exempts all other foods eaten during that המוציא לחם מן הארץmeal from requiring their own berakhot. This is true for both foods and drinks and therefore, a berakhah is not recited upon beverages consumed during such a meal. Wine however, differs (Shulhan Arukh OH 174:1), and when consumed during a meal that includes bread, still necessitates its own berakhah. Similarly, if a person plans on drinking water and then wine, the berakhah of שהכל נהיה בדברו recited on the water does not exempt the wine and the wine requires its own בורא פרי הגפן. However, if one drinks the wine first, then the berakhah of בורא exempts the water upon which no berakhah should be פרי הגפןrecited. As such, it is appropriate to drink the wine before the water so as to avoid an unnecessary berakhah (ברכה שאינה צריכה).
