Read the article Bodyguards and match the paragraphs A -Gto the suitable headings 1-8. There is an extra heading, which

you do not need to use. (4 marks)Answer sheet

A Well, obviously the first job of a bodyguard is tomake sure that no harm comes to his or her client. Her?Yes, today many bodyguards are women, because theyare more inconspicuous, and many attackers do notthink they are a threat. In fact because other parts of the

job are more important than physical strength, womenmake very good bodyguards.

B So where do bodyguards come from? Many havemilitary backgrounds, and others come fromgovernment agencies, such as the United States Secret

Service, which have the job of protecting important politicians. These days some private companies offertraining for bodyguards, and other security companiestrain their own people.

C Bodyguards do not have any special privileges underthe law. They are only allowed to carry guns or otherweapons in very special circumstances. And if theyinjure or kill anybody in the course of their work, theywill have the same problems with the police as anyother person would have.

D People need bodyguards for different reasons. Some people do not need them at all, but like to have them tofeel important. Celebrities are often in danger of attackfrom disturbed people, and need protection as do some

politicians with controversial policies. Finally many people hire bodyguards for their children to avoid therisk of being kidnapped.

E The job of the bodyguard is to get between the clientand an attacker. But a good bodyguard will try to makesure that it does not come to that, by changing theclient's routine and security to make attacks less likely. Many bodyguards seem to be doing another job, forinstance being the client's driver.

F Many bodyguards are injured in their work, but mostinjuries are minor. Serious attacks on a person's life areinfrequent, and the biggest problem a bodyguard faces

    1. The professional's background.

    2. Different types ofcustomers.

    3. Not for men only.

    4. What it takes.

    5. The legal position.

    6. The risks of the profession.

    7. Also protecting privacy.

    Sundanc e by Teresa Wilson

    Kerry:

I really don't know why this book is so popular. I mean, I suppose it is going to appeal to young girls whowant danger and romance, but I found this book really tedious. For a start, the characters were reallyunconvincing. The author went out of her way to add lots of details about the characters, but I found thesedetails really pointless. I thought that some of the facts she presented about the main characters wouldbecome significant in some way later in the novel, but they didn't. They were just worthless bits ofinformation. I also was disappointed that, although this book is meant to be about kids at high school, thewriter seems to have no recollection at all about what it's like to be 17. The main character thought andacted like a 32-year old. It just wasn't believable. I'm not saying Teresa Wilson is a bad writer. She canobviously string words together and come up with a story that is appealing to a large number of people, but she lacks anything original. There is no flair. It just uses the same sort of language as you can see inmany other mediocre novels.

    B

    Wild Ways by Margery Emerson

    Liz:

I have to say that I won't forget this book for a long time. I was hooked from the very first chapter. The

devastating story affected me so much that I don't know if I'll ever feel the same again. I was close to tearson several occasions. I've got images in my brain now that I don't think will ever leave me. It's incrediblywell-researched and, although it is fiction, is based on shocking real-life events. I learned an awful lotabout things that went on that I never knew before. Margaret Emerson has a brilliant way with words and Ireally felt real empathy towards the characters, although I was sometimes irritated by the choices theymade. However, the parallel story, the part that is set in the present, is not quite so good. I found myself

just flicking through that part so that I could get back to 1940s Paris.

    C

    Orchid by Henry Rathbone

    Imogen:

This is a delightful novel full of wonderful imagery, it paints a remarkable picture of life in a distant timeand a far-away place. If you're looking to learn about Eastern culture in great detail, then this is probablynot the book for you, as the writer skims over most of the more complicated aspects of the country'setiquette. The historical aspects are also not covered in much depth. However, I wonder whether this wasthe writer's intention. By doing this, he symbolizes the superficiality of the girl's life. She, like the book, isbeautiful and eager to please, but remains too distant from us, the readers, to teach us much. Although I

    Hannah:

I read this book for a literature class. I know it's a classic, and I did try to like it, but I just didn't get into it. Ikept persevering, hoping that I'd start to enjoy it, but no such luck. The famous scene out on the moorswas definitely the best bit of the book, but even that I found ridiculous when it is clearly supposed to bepassionate. As I approached the end of the book, I figured there must be some kind of moral to the story, something that I would learn from the experience of trudging through seven hundred long pages, but therewas nothing worthwhile. I don't know why the literary world sees this book as such a masterpiece. Thecharacters are portrayed as being intelligent, but they do such stupid things! And as for it being a love

story - marrying someone you don't love and then being abused by them - that doesn't spell love to me.

Are you too old to be a child, but too young to be a teenager? We interviewed five kids between the ages of ten and fourteen, and askedthem what the most difficult things about beingtheir age were. Here are their replies.

    A. Anne, aged ten I think the main problemwhen you are ten is that if you want to dosomething, or you don't like something, no-one

cares, because "you're just a kid". My sister is just two years older than me, yet she is allowedto do all sorts of things I can't, because everyonethinks I'm still a baby. I don't really care about

boys, but I have a friend called Darren. He'snice, but he's not a boyfriend or anything likethat.

    B. Sharon, aged eleven. At school it can bedifficult with some of the other girls. There are

problems with bullies, and often we have too

much schoolwork to do. It's made even moredifficult at home, where sometimes I feelunhappy and frustrated that I can't get on withmy brothers and sisters, and sometimes we fightand then our parents get angry with us.

    C. Terry, aged twelve. I have trouble growingup, because I feel I have no control over my

body. Going through puberty is difficult andsometimes it's frightening. You get pimples andyour voice changes and sometimes you feel

really self-conscious. Also, you have moreresponsibilities than you had before and youspend a lot of time away from your family soyou have to learn how to look after yourself. Allyour friends seem to know what they're doing, and sometimes you feel very lonely and left out.

    This Month's Letters

See this month's problems and questions submitted to us by learners of English:

A I study English for 6 hours per week in secondary school. For 1 hour each week we have

conversation classes with a native speaker of English where we talk about topics such asdrugs, politics and culture. I know it's a really good opportunity to practise my spokenEnglish, but I never make a contribution to the discussion. It's not that I don't have anopinion, or that I'm shy, but more that I don't have the vocabulary to express my views. Ifeel really frustrated at the end of the lesson. Nobody else in the group seems to have thesame problem.Katalin

B I'm a 24-year-old business student from Malaysia and I've been attending English classesat night school for the past 5 years. Up to now I've considered myself to be a goodstudent. Last month I went to Britain to visit my relatives over there and it was awful.People found my pronunciation difficult to follow and I couldn't understand them either. What went wrong? My English teacher is very good and I always score the highest in

    grammar tests.Fazlinda

C I'm writing to ask your opinion on a matter which is really annoying me. My Englishteacher never corrects my mistakes when I am speaking. Isn't that her job? How am Igoing to improve otherwise? Also she's always telling me that now I'm an advancedstudent, I should forget all the rules of grammar that I learnt when I was younger.Gunther

D Can you help me? I really want to speak English the right way, with the correct accent. Doyou have any good ideas? I have a particular problem with sounds like 's'. I plan to work inthe UK in the future and nobody will take me seriously if my English pronunciation isanything short of excellent.Jose E I am working as an au pair in London looking after 2 small children. I love my job but theway that English people speak is a little puzzling. For example, I often hear them saythings like 'more friendlier', whereas I thought it should be 'more friendly'. It also seems tobe common for them to say 'we was' instead of 'we were'. Can you explain this? Would itbe impolite of me to correct them?Lana

F I am an intermediate student of English (I have been studying it for 3 years). I'm quitegood at reading and writing but listening is very difficult for me. My teacher suggested thatI listen to the BBC World Service every day in order to improve my listening. The problem

is that it's hard for me to understand every word. Do you have any ideas about how tomake listening to the radio less difficult? I like listening to the news and knowing what'sgoing on in the world.

The Life and Work of J. Tolkien. Answer sheet

Many authors become masters of a particular genre offiction. But very few can claim to have had such aneffect that they virtually have created the genre forthemselves. One such author is J R R Tolkien. From his

prolific imagination was created not only Middle Earth;the stage for his giant fantasy The Lord of the Rings , butalso a whole genre of fantasy fiction which has since

become known as "sword and sorcery".

Before Tolkiens work was published, fantasy was setin what was very near to the present for the authors. Also, the genre was very close to horror, and authorssuch as Lovell and Bram Stoker moved easily betweenthe two. The great American writer Edgar Allen Poehad recently brought out a work of what we wouldtoday call horror stories, but he had entitled it Tales of

Mystery and Imagination , suggesting that he thought ofit as fantasy.

Tolkiens distinctive contribution was to create a pseudo-medieval world and to populate it with wisewizards, bold knights, and a massive cast of othercharacters, including dwarfs, elves, and most of theother creatures of our folk memory. He also created hisown contribution, the hobbit. Hobbits were small

people, who had distinctive hairy feet. They werecharacterised by honest common sense and rathercomplex social lives. In all his works, it is evidently thehobbits with whom Tolkien sympathises the most.

What made Tolkiens work so compelling was that itwas a perfectly realised work of fantasy. Every detail inhis stories rings true. This is because Tolkien spent somuch time working and thinking about Middle Earththat the actual part which we have on paper is only afraction of his research. His later books show clearly towhat extent he had created this entire world, complete

However, although Middle Earth is a towering work offantasy, it has roots in reality. The Middle Earth ofTolkien is close to his own native Oxfordshire, both inthe landscape of the Shire, and above all in the reactionsand behaviour of its characters. The ethos is that of pre-war England, possibly because Tolkien could conceiveof no other mode of behaviour, but more probably

because his book can be read on many levels, and inonly the most basic of the levels is the great struggle

    between light and darkness completely.

It must be remembered that Tolkien was writing in atime when one Great War had just finished, and anotherwas about to begin. In his book, he stresses the bravery, and endurance of the small people without whomvictory is impossible. This was the lesson that Tolkienfelt had to be learned from the horrors of the Great War- the decisions which shape the destiny of nations aretaken by an elite group, but they are implemented by thecommon people of the country.

Though his book brought him world-wide fame,Tolkien continued to live modestly at OxfordUniversity, where he worked. He was a close friend ofanother great writer of his day, C.S. Lewis, who alsotaught there. However, while Lewis was more relaxedabout his fame, Tolkien never really got used to it, andhe was quite embarrassed by the admiration of the manytourists who came to see him.
