Gridded drawing for pattern pieces at end of text Materials: Scraps of solid color and print home decorating fabrics of your choice, for amounts, see in- structions and pattern. (Some fabrics in our original bag are from “Jab”, for example, cretonne “Orchid” in floral print and jacquard fabric “Barbuda” in red-gold for lining. Try asking for scraps at a home decorating shop). Also sewing thread (Gütermann creativ); scrap of lace; 1 pair “Kim“ bamboo purse handles plus attaching loops (Prym article 615-101); 15 x 60 cm (6" x 24") Vilene/Pellon H 180 fusible interfacing (Freudenberg); 2 to 3 large sheets of graph paper (DIN A3/ 11 3 4" x 16 1 2"); rotary cutter, cut- ting mat, and ruler (all from Prym). Instructions: Pattern pieces : Transfer gridded drawing of pattern pieces A and B to sheets of graph paper which have been glued together (1 square = 2 x 2 cm/ 3 4" x 3 4"), making sure to include all markings. Or use a photocopier to enlarge pattern pieces accordingly. Cut out pattern pieces. Cutting fabric pieces : Add 1.5 cm ( 5 8") allowances to all seam edges. A = Bag front and back. For the outer bag, first stitch various home decorating fabrics together, then cut out 2 pieces. For the inner bag, cut 2 pieces from lining fabric (each as one entire piece). B = Base. Cut 1 piece each from outer fabric and lining fabric, lay- ing pattern piece on fold. Iron interfacing to wrong side of lining piece as indicated by gray area in gridded drawing. Measured pieces: C = Binding. Cut 2 pieces from outer fabric, each 12 x 33 cm (4 3 4" x 13") (finished size = 4.5 x 30 cm/ 1 7 8" x 12"). D = Loops. Cut 4 pieces, each 6.5 x 10 cm (2 5 8" x 4") (finished size = 2 x 3.5 cm/ 3 4" x 1 1 2"). Sewing : For the outer bag, stitch pieces of various home decorating fabrics together as desired (see lines in pattern piece). Press seams open. Working from outer side, stitch exactly along each seam with wide, long zigzag stitching, thereby catching allowances. Stitch lace to pieced fabric as desired. Stitch base piece B between bag pieces A , from star to star. Again press seams open and topstitch seams. Sew lining in same manner. Slide lining into outer bag, right sides facing. Stitch lining to outer bag at side openings, between each x and star. Clip allowances up to last stitches. Turn bag right side out. Topstitch side edges. Fold each loop piece D to 3.25 x 10 cm (1 1 4" x 4"). Stitch long edges together with 1 cm ( 3 8") wide seam. Turn right side out and press. Topstitch close to long edges. Pin upper edges of outer bag and lining together. Lay pleats in upper edge of bag as illustrated, making 3 pleats each to right and left of centers, as mirror images (see photo), so that pleated upper edges of bag match pieces C . Pin pleats. Topstitch pleats 5 cm (2") deep as illustrated. Bind upper bag edges with pieces C , catching loops D each 5.5 cm (2 1 4") from center of bag. Attach handles: Unscrew bar from attaching loop.
