Materials: Scraps of solid colorand print home decorating fabricsof your choice, for amounts, see in-structions and pattern. (Some fabricsin our original bag are from “Jab”,for example, cretonne “Orchid” infloral print and jacquard fabric“Barbuda” in red-gold for lining.Try asking for scraps at a homedecorating shop). Also sewingthread (Gütermann creativ); scrapof lace; 1 pair “Kim“ bamboo pursehandles plus attaching loops (Prymarticle 615-101); 15 x 60 cm (6" x24") Vilene/Pellon H 180 fusibleinterfacing (Freudenberg); 2 to 3large sheets of graph paper (DINA3/ 113⁄4" x 161⁄2"); rotary cutter, cut-ting mat, and ruler (all from Prym).

Instructions:Pattern pieces: Transfer griddeddrawing of pattern pieces A and Bto sheets of graph paper whichhave been glued together (1square = 2 x 2 cm/ 3⁄4" x 3⁄4"), makingsure to include all markings. Or usea photocopier to enlarge patternpieces accordingly. Cut out patternpieces.Cutting fabric pieces: Add 1.5 cm(5⁄8") allowances to all seam edges.

A = Bag front and back. For theouter bag, first stitch various homedecorating fabrics together, thencut out 2 pieces. For the inner bag,cut 2 pieces from lining fabric(each as one entire piece).B = Base. Cut 1 piece each fromouter fabric and lining fabric, lay-ing pattern piece on fold. Ironinterfacing to wrong side of liningpiece as indicated by gray area ingridded drawing.Measured pieces:C = Binding. Cut 2 pieces fromouter fabric, each 12 x 33 cm (43⁄4"x 13") (finished size = 4.5 x 30 cm/17⁄8" x 12").D = Loops. Cut 4 pieces, each 6.5 x10 cm (25⁄8" x 4") (finished size = 2 x3.5 cm/ 3⁄4" x 11⁄2").

Sewing: For the outer bag, stitchpieces of various home decoratingfabrics together as desired (seelines in pattern piece). Press seamsopen. Working from outer side,stitch exactly along each seamwith wide, long zigzag stitching,thereby catching allowances. Stitchlace to pieced fabric as desired.Stitch base piece B between bagpieces A, from star to star. Againpress seams open and topstitchseams. Sew lining in same manner.Slide lining into outer bag, right

sides facing. Stitch lining to outerbag at side openings, betweeneach x and star. Clip allowances upto last stitches. Turn bag right sideout. Topstitch side edges. Foldeach loop piece D to 3.25 x 10 cm(11⁄4" x 4"). Stitch long edgestogether with 1 cm (3⁄8") wideseam. Turn right side out andpress. Topstitch close to longedges. Pin upper edges of outerbag and lining together. Press

edges of each piece C to wrongside, 1.5 cm (5⁄8") wide, then foldstrip in half lengthwise. Lay pleatsin upper edge of bag as illustrated,making 3 pleats each to right andleft of centers, as mirror images(see photo), so that pleated upperedges of bag match pieces C. Pinpleats. Topstitch pleats 5 cm (2")deep as illustrated. Bind upper bagedges with pieces C, catching loopsD each 5.5 cm (21⁄4") from center ofbag. Attach handles: Unscrew barfrom attaching loop. Hang fabricloop in attaching loop. Screw barthrough attaching loop and handle.
