SPORTS HEALTH ASSESSMENTS

The Bolton Board of Education requires that all students have an annual physical examination in order participate

in CIAC interscholastic athletics. Every athlete who participates in any CIAC-sponsored activity (practice and/or

contest) must be determined physically fit through a pre-participation assessment performed in accordance with

reasonable and prudent written protocol as determined by his/her board of education. A pre-participation

assessment will be considered current if it has been performed during the past thirteen (13) months. At no time

will an athlete be allowed to practice or compete if the pre-participation assessment exceeds thirteen (13) months.

Physical Examinations (CIAC Policy Statement)

Every athlete who participates in any CIAC-sanctioned activity (practice and/or contest) must be determined

physically fit through a pre-participating evaluation performed within the past 13 months in accordance with

reasonable and prudent written medical protocol as determined by his/her board of education or governing body.

B.O.E. Policy: Physical Examinations (6145.2)

All students in interscholastic athletics are expected to have a physical examination annually.

SPORTS INSURANCE

The Bolton Board of Education has made available to parents of athletes a student injury insurance for students

who engage in interscholastic sports. The policy provides insurance coverage for student injuries while

participating in interscholastic activities on an excess medical coverage basis; the family’s personal insurance is

the primary carrier liable for any interscholastic injury. If there are medical expenses beyond what the family’s

personal insurance covers or if there is no insurance, the school policy provides coverage for any and all

additional bills up to the policy maximum. There is no duplication of coverage with the injury.

REPORTING & TREATING OF INJURIES

1. All injuries that occur while participating on an athletic team are to be reported to the coach and athletic

trainer.

2. The athletic trainer or coach will fill out an Injury Report Form and turn it in to the Athletic Department

Office. This report should be completed the day of the injury or as soon thereafter as possible. The

Athletic Director will then submit the report to the school nurse.

3. Athletes should not attempt to treat injuries without consulting the athletic trainer.

4. When at an away site, medical treatment will be administered by the home team’s athletic trainer or

medical personnel.

5. In the event an athlete must be transported for emergency treatment, a family member or assistant coach

will ordinarily accompany the injured athlete.

6. If an injury requires a physician’s attention, the injured athlete must present written authorization before

he/she may return to practices or games. The written authorization must be presented to the school nurse,

athletic trainer or coach.

7. The athletic trainer at the high school has the authority to restrict an athlete’s participation. Decisions are

based on what is considered best for the student athlete’s present and future health.

Bolton High School - Student-Athlete Handbook Page 8

CONCUSSION/RETURN TO PLAY PLAN

As head injuries can progress to be more serious than they initially appear, it is important to monitor the athlete

carefully. Parents will be notified of any head injury incurred by an athlete. This is especially important because

of the possibility of the onset or increase of symptoms later on. This will serve as a guide for head injuries

suffered; the athletic trainer can provide more information on the care of sports-related injuries.

Management

Athlete is removed from practice/game. Not allowed to re-enter.

Athlete should continue to be monitored to ensure no return of symptoms

Return to Play Plan

Athlete is allowed to return to practice when asymptomatic for 24 hours

Athlete must provide written clearance BY A LICENSED HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL

Athlete will receive impact-testing (if utilized by school)

Exertion plan for return as follows:

Day 1 - Light aerobic exercise

Day 2 - Sports specific exercise

Day 3 - Non-contact Drills

Day 4 - Full contact drills (with medical clearance)

Day 5 - Game

If symptoms return during any one phase the athlete should stop activity and return to the previous phase the next

day.

Head injuries may not become evident until some time has passed since the actual incident. In addition, many

athletes participate in weekend activities without medical coverage. For these reasons, it is important to be aware

of the signs, symptoms, and appropriate treatment for head injuries. The injured athlete should never be left

alone for the first 24 hours after the injury. It is important to monitor the student-athlete after a head injury.

While a mild headache may be expected, it is still important to monitor the athlete. If any of the following

symptoms occur, please seek medical attention immediately.

Increasing or severe headache

Dizziness

Vomiting or nausea

Loss of memory

Poor concentration

Confusion

Change in personality

Unequal or dilated pupils

Double or blurred vision

sportsmanship, which must be complied with by the participants, and it is essential that student athletes and

Attendance Policy

A student absent because of illness may not attend any after-school sporting event (game or practice) on

the day of absence. Admittance to school after 11:00 AM is considered an absence and a student may not

participate in any sporting event (game or practice) on that day. If a student is dismissed from school due

to illness, that student may not return for any after school sporting event (game or practice.)

Student athletes are expected to have good attendance at school and good attendance at practices and

games. Missing a game or practice due to one of the following reasons will be considered an unexcused

absence and will result in disciplinary action by the coach:

short-term/club field trips;

after school employment;

club meetings;

driver education classes;

school detentions (teacher detention or office detention).

Note: An unexcused absence will result in the minimum of missing the next scheduled game upon

return, with further disciplinary action at the sole discretion of the coach.

Note: Saturday is a possible day for make-up varsity game scheduling.

The following are considered valid reasons for absence from practices and/or games:

extra help from teachers after school;

medical excuses and emergency medical appointments.

Captain’s Practice

The term “Captain’s Practice” usually means the team’s captain organizing and conducting

practice sessions for the sport without adult supervision. The CIAC and Bolton Public Schools do

not in any way sanction, encourage or condone “Captain’s Practice” in any sport.

There is no requirement during the off-season that members of a team attend activities called by a

captain or any other members of a team. Student-athletes may practice individually or as a group

during the off-season. Any conditioning or practice training an athlete chooses to participate in is

strictly voluntary. The school assumes no responsibility for “Captains Practices.”

Changing Sports

Prior to the opening game of each season, athletes will be allowed to transfer from one sport to

another only upon mutual agreement of the two coaches involved.

An athlete who drops from the squad after the first contest is not permitted to join another squad

during that season.

Hazing Policy

The hazing of any team member or any student will result in immediate and severe disciplinary

action including dismissal from team, suspension from school, and consideration for expulsion.

Participation Fee Policy

For the 2014-2015 school year, the Board of Education has instituted an athletic team participation fee of $75.00 per athlete per sport. There is a $375.00 per school year per family cap on the participation fee. The Bolton Booster Club has instituted a program to provide participation-fee assistance to families in financial need.

Suspension/Dismissal Procedures

of suspension, including weekends and holidays.

Team suspension/dismissal actions must be based on infractions of regulations set forth in the

Student-Athlete Handbook or such supplemental regulations as have been approved by the

Bolton High School - Student-Athlete Handbook Page 17

Athletic Director and distributed to the students. Coaches must contact the athlete’s parents when

suspensions or dismissals occur.

Team Captains

The position of Captain is not just an honor but a privilege. This honor will require the utmost

leadership knowing that the Captain will be a role model for other team members. It is the

responsibility of the coach to select the captain(s) for his or her team. A maximum of three (3)

athletes shall be named Captains and/or Assistant Captains. Each coach should explain to the

team how captains are to be selected and who is eligible to be a possible captain and when that

selection will take place. Failure to comply with rules and regulations of the Athletic Department

and Team may lead to dismissal as captain. (See Appendix)

Team Pictures

The Yearbook Photographer will take pictures of all teams. Advance dates will be forwarded to

the coaches and players. Athletes are responsible for being present on the scheduled picture date

and wearing the appropriate game uniforms/attire for the team picture. If an error has occurred

when team or individual pictures are distributed, please, directly contact the photographer to

correct the error.

Transportation Policy

Athletes must travel to and from contests on the team bus, accompanied by the coach.

Athletes will be expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times while riding to and

from athletic contest.

Athletes may travel to or from an away contest with their parent only when a Release of Liability

form has been fill-out and handed in 24 hours before request date for the BHS Principal to

approve. (See Appendix)

All participants must return to Bolton on the team bus.

Players who ride on a bus or are conveyed by the coach are representatives of the school. Their

appearance should be that of neat well-groomed athletes.

Vacation Policy

Parents of athletes should become acquainted with team schedules of games and practices and

should plan vacations accordingly. Team members are expected to attend practices and contests

during vacations that fall within the team season. Parents should make family vacation plans with

the student/athletes commitment in mind. However, athletes who have family vacation plans

must furnish the coach notification of vacation plans the day after the team has been

selected. A parent or guardian of the athlete must sign the written notification. No team member

will be removed from a team for missing practice or games during vacations for which they have

notified the coach as previously stated. However, penalties will be enforced due to their

absence. Varsity team members must attend all practices. Family vacations will not be accepted

as an excused absence.

Note: Missing a game(s) or practice(s) because of a family vacation will result in the minimum of

missing the next scheduled game upon return, with further disciplinary action at the sole discretion of

the coach.

Note: Student athletes participating in Board of Education extended field trips (examples;

Spain/France/Italy) will not be subject to disciplinary action for missing practices or games. These

student athletes will participate when the coach determines they are physically and mentally

July 1, 2017

Dear Student Athlete and Parents,

For the 2017-2018 school year, the Board of Education has instituted an athletic team participation fee

of $75.00 per athlete per sport. This fee is waived for any student who is eligible for free or reduced

lunch according to the federal guidelines. There is a $375.00 per school year per family cap on

payments. This fee, commonly called a "pay-to-play" fee, must be paid by each student-athlete prior to

November 15, 2017. The fee is the same for all levels of athletics offered at Bolton High School,

participation, junior varsity or varsity.

As in previous years, the decisions of whether a player makes a team and how much playing time a

player receives will be made by the coaching staff, and are not related to the payment of the

participation fee. The fee will be returned to student-athletes not making teams that have squad size

limitations. It should also be noted that the participation fee is not refundable after the season has begun.

The Bolton Booster Club has instituted a program to provide participation-fee scholarship assistance to

families in financial need. Please direct requests for assistance to Booster Club President Tim Callahan,

6 Birch Mountain Rd, Bolton CT 06043 (phone number 860-559-6901) or email at

[email protected]. All requests will be kept confidential.

Please provide payment of the $75.00 per student participation fee to the BHS Main Office prior to the

try-out date. Make checks payable to Bolton High School and please write the athlete's name(s) and
