Your Inside Scoop on the IB Community
Vol. I, Issue I Bonita Vista High School 751 Otay Lakes Road September/October 2012
International Baccalaureate
A Letter from the President By David Cabinian
College is so near as we approach application deadlines. As freshman, IB’ers
seemed so unaware of the closeness of college. We began as ignorant freshman: ignorant
of both the difficulties of the classes awaited us and the long nights of homework. Over
the past three years, we have developed a sense of what is difficult as well as the
definition of “lots of homework.” We have persevered through the long nights of essays
and problems to arrive where we are now: Senior Year.
Half way through the IB Diploma program, we are now beginning the long
journey of the Extended Essay, internal assessments and service projects. IB Club serves
as a social society but also a resource in which fellow IB candidates can rely on others for
help. The club acts as a supporting community providing advice relevant to school and
extracurricular. We chat deep into the night helping to keep others awake while
remaining focused. With this support, we are able to persevere against the unceasing
assailment of activities, deadlines and stress.
Here we are, one school year away from the largest achievement in our drive
toward independence. However, the large quantities of work are overwhelming and we
end up complaining rather than seizing the moment. We need to release the desire for life
to be easy and accept that the road to success is the road less traveled. Beverly Sills says,
“There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.” Live your life to the fullest and with
no regrets. The IB candidates will reflect upon their struggles and realize the real worth of
IB is not achieving the diploma but rather lies within the arduous yet fulfilling journey
towards that goal.
2013 IB Diploma Candidates
David Cabinian, this year's IB
Club President, personifies the
very traits that IB works to
instill in students. A natural
leader, Cabinian portrays firm
but unbiased authority in all his
activities, including the
Calculus Club and Gastronomy
Club. He strives to master his
many schedules and conquer
stress on all levels. Looking to
the future, he aspires to attend
Harvey Mudd University and
pursue a career in engineering.
In his time spent in IB, he states
that his favorite aspect of IB is
its undeniable sense of
camaraderie. As Cabinian
continues to fulfill his goals, he
lives by the quote, “The
difference between a successful
person and others is not a lack
of strength, or knowledge, but
rather in a lack of will.”

IB CLUB OFFICER PROFILES
Many know William McGrath as the funny
guy who always makes the entire class
laugh. Behind his goofy and pleasant
demeanor is a student of exemplary
excellence, the ideal IB candidate. McGrath
balances his chaotic class schedule with his
dedication to being an Eagle Scout, a
member of the Science and Engineering
Club and Vice President of the IB club.
McGrath plans on majoring in computer
science at UCSD or Georgia Tech
University. When he’s not busy with
activities, McGrath enjoys playing on his
computer or doing something outside. His
favorite subject is Math taught by his
favorite teacher, Mr. Phelps. He appreciates
the connection and friendship with the
students of IB and everyone can agree that
McGrath is going places.
By: Rudia Kim
Laleña Janke, IB officer, Editor-in-Chief of
Yearbook, Junior Optimist Octagon
International board member, and superhero.
She manages a hefty course load while still
being actively involved in many clubs and
organizations including Baron Buddies. Janke
hopes to attend an out-of-state university but
is unsure of what her future holds for her. Her
favorite classes include Calculus, and
naturally her favorite teacher is Mr. Phelps.
Apart from her schoolwork, "Lala", likes to
spend her time singing along to tunes in
concerts, Coachella, is specially noted. She
abhors the stress that IB brings to the table,
but combats it with the sense of comradeship
she gains from her fellow "IB’ers".
By: David Morison
Rudia Kim, this year’s treasurer, is one of the
most active students on campus. She proves her
leadership as ASB Vice-President, CSF
President and FNL President. She aspires to
attend USC, UCSB, or UCLA, and with her
academic dedication she’ll have no problem
accomplishing her dreams. Kim loves spending
time sleeping, making blueberry banana
smoothies, reading, going to the gym, and
buying food from Costco. Her favorite thing
about being in IB is the unparalleled support
system she gets from fellow “IB’ers,” but she
doesn’t appreciate the workload and lack of
sleep. Kim copes with the rigorous academic
load with her mantra, “we all look at the same
sky.” By: Devon Roncoroni
How does Jordan Downey find time to
breathe? He is not only active in Boy Scouts,
but he is also in the run for Salutatorian. He
has the initiative to get others and himself far.
Downey volunteers, while finding time to be
the Class of 2013 Treasurer and IB Club
Community Service Liaison. Downey’s hard
work will pay off once he applies to his top
college that includes Early Action at
Stanford. He plans to major in Engineering, a
practical choice with his astonishing math
skills, which only expands with Downey’s
job at Mathnasium. Jordan Downey is truly a
dedicated person that is bound to succeed.
By: William McGrath
David Morison, when he entered his junior year,
was not intending to be an IB Diploma
candidate and active club member and officer of
some of the most prestigious organizations on
campus. However, it didn't take him long to
fulfill that role. Even with his rigorous course
load, Morison manages to still be involved in
several clubs on campus including Korean Club,
SSA, and Speech and Debate. He hopes that
with his impressive résumé, he can attend
college out of state, with some of his top choices
including Tufts, NYU and Cornell. In order to
maintain his sanity, Morison enjoys car rides
and the friendly company of his fellow IB
family.
By: Laleña Janke
Devon Roncoroni: Soccer star, IB Secretary, and
ideal high school student. When she isn’t
excelling in her academics, she uses her spare
time to participate in various clubs and
activities. A talented athlete and generous
friend, she is always sacrificing her time for
others. On campus, Roncoroni is a member of
Octagon, CSF, Varsity Soccer and IB Club.
Being a member of so many clubs, she has
developed awesome time management skills to
cope with the various meetings and activities.
She hopes to purse both a career in the
humanities as well as becoming a star soccer
player. Look forward to seeing her in Rio for the
2016 Olympics!
