The Jacoby Fun Run broke out of the start-ing balloon gate Saturday for the second year.

The event began Saturday morning at Allan Yorke Park and included both a 5K and 1-mile run.

The fun run was organized by Melanie Roach, owner of Roach Gymnastics. The event raises money for Jacoby Miles’ physi-cal therapy. The Puyallup junior, a competi-tive gymnast, was injured during gymnastic exercises at Roach Gymnastics in November 2012. Following a dismount on the uneven bars she landed on her neck injuring her spi-nal cord, causing partial paralysis.

Roach said the fun run was “amazing” and more money was raised than last year because of the many participants and “such generous sponsors.”

This year the fun run was scheduled dur-ing Bonney Lake Days. Last year it was in November. Roach thought the warmer weather helped the cause.

Jacoby said she keeps working hard with her therapy and feels she is doing well.

“I’m building strength,” she said. She is coaching 6 to 10-year-old gymnasts

at Roach Gymnastics.Sponsors this year include USA

Gymnastics, Bonney Lake Days, Molen Orthodontics, Fleet Feet Sports, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Perkins Chiropractic, Advantage Graphics and Pierce County Councilman Dan Roach.

Shaved heads for HowieBy Ray Still

Staff Writer

While White River Wol-verine fans were cheering for their football teams on Sunday many parents, kids, football players and their coaches were supporting a different team by get-ting their head shaved for Howie the Cancer Ninja.

For $10, fans of Black Diamond resident Howie Koch, also known as Howie the Cancer Ninja, could get their head shaved to show their support for the 3 year old.

Melissa Sabin and Jes-sie Tranquilla, friends of Howie’s mother Jenna, volunteered to shave heads during the football scrim-mages.

“Jenna would do this for anybody else in a heart-beat,” Sabin said. “This is all about bringing hope to Jenna.”

Howie was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was 2. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the adrenal glad and often sits on the kidney. It is most com-mon in children under the age of 5, according to the Mayo Clinic. Howie had the tumor removed last April after several rounds of chemotherapy but relapsed in July before he could get a bone marrow transplant. Howie has now started a new round of chemo-therapy.

Both Howie and his mother could not come to the event because Howie was receiving a blood trans-fusion.

However, everyone who had their head shaved had their pictures taken to show Howie how many people support him.

Jennifer Wallin, a child-hood friend of Howie’s mother, also volunteered to help at the event. Wallin said Howie’s diagnosis hit her hard but she is amazed at both Howie’s and Jenna’s strength.

“I see how positive Jenna is and how all of this has made her stronger,” Wallin said. “Her strength gave Melissa and I more fuel to do good for them.”

Howie is also involved with several other fundrais-ing and donation events for the next month. There is a blood drive at the Black Diamond Community Cen-ter on Aug. 24 and during the month of September, Howie’s Hometown Heroes will be accepting donations

and recording the miles participants walk, run and bike for Howie.

thousand dollars of assessed property value to the base rate. Renewing the levy will keep it at the current rate through 2015, “maintaining exactly what we have right now,” said Dale Mitchell, the

chair of the fire department’s board of fire commissioners. After the first year at 37 cents, the levy will then drop to 36 cents in 2016 and 35 cents in 2017 and 2018.

If voters do not renew the levy, Thorson said the fire department’s budget will be cut by 14 percent.

All subjects in the police blotter are presumed inno-cent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Bonney LakeAugust 12Underage Beer Run: Officers observed two males enter a state Route 410 gro-cery store around 12:30 a.m. It appeared to officers the two were on a beer run. As a getaway car sat outside, the two returned after being in the store for roughly 1 min-ute. They carried three 24 packs of Coors Light. When officers approached, a store employee came outside and the car drove off. The two were questioned about whether they purchased the beer or not. Officers told them they were under arrest and the two took off, one going east and the other west. Officers followed one into the woods and was able

to get handcuffs on him. He was treated by East Pierce Fire and Rescue for cuts and scrapes and was booked into the Fife jail. Officers made contact with the other subject and after a records check found he had a warrant with the Puyallup Police Department. Both subjects are under 21 and were issued multiple cita-tions including theft, minor in possession and resisting arrest.

August 9Welfare Check: Officers responded to a SR 410 store to do a welfare check on a subject seen staggering in the parking lot. Once offi-cers approached the sub-ject, began to move around quickly and told them he was waiting for his sis-ter who was in the store. After a records check, offi-cers found he had a war-rant with the Orting Police Department for assault. He was transported to a meet-ing location and released to an Orting officer.

August 8Multiple Warrants: Officers responded to the report of a homeless camp

site in a wooded area near 202 Ave East and South Prairie Road. Once on scene, officers spoke with two males. One had war-rants for his arrest out of Puyallup and Federal Way, he was taken into custody and transferred to Puyallup officers. The other male also had a warrant for escape from the Department of Corrections. During a search of his persons, offi-cers found a small glass vial of methamphetamine. He was transported to Pierce County Jail where he was booked on unlawful pos-session of a controlled sub-stance, obstructing a public officer and his arrest war-rant. Officers left a note at the campsite for others liv-ing there, stating that they have a week to vacate. As officers left the scene, they ran into one of the subjects’ girlfriend, after a records check officers learned she also had a warrant for her arrest. She was transported to the Kent police.

Missing Gun: Officers responded to the report of a missing firearm. The reporting party told offi-cers he had not seen his

gun since he moved into his new apartment in June. He believed his brother had taken the gun when he helped him move. Officers attempted to contact his brother but received no answer.

Domestic Violence: Officers responded to the report of domestic violence. Once on scene, the report-ing party told officers he was at his ex-girlfriend’s house to do some work and pick up their child for the night. The two got into an argument over the cost of repairs and the girlfriend then told him he could not take their daughter. He tried to leave before a fight start-ed but she approached his driver door and opened it as he starting to back out of the drive way. He told offi-cers that was when he acci-dentally ran over her foot and she threaten to press charges. He called his insur-ance company and filed a police report. Officers tried to contact the girlfriend but were unable to.

August 7Burglary: Officers respond-ed to the report of a break

in at a residence on Church Lake Drive. The owner returned home from the store to notice that her kitchen window was open and a step ladder was placed on the side of the house lead-ing up to the window. She told officers she was unsure of what items had been taken but that her house was “messy” and items were misplaced. Officers advised the owner to fill out a theft inventory form. No further action was taken at the time of this report.

Liquor Violat ion: Officers responded to Allan Yorke Park to the reporting of a group of people drinking beer and throwing their bottles into the lake. When the subjects saw the officer approaching them, one of them threw his beer bottle into the lake and another placed his bottle down in some rocks and attempt-ed to get into the water. Two of the four subjects were released from the scene because they were not drinking. The two who remained on scene were cited for intoxicants in a park and were also

trespassed from the park until further notice.

SumnerAugust 8Damaged Vehicle: Officers responded to a local park to the report of a vehicle being damaged. The suspect had left the scene but the vehicle’s owner knows them. The male suspect had asked the owner for money but when she told him no, she told officers he walked over to her car with a board with nails on it and hit her car multiple times. The owner took officers to the suspect’s house but he would not speak with them. He was issued a criminal citation for malicious mischief by mail.

August 7Theft: Officers responded to the report of someone being hit in the head and then having their skate-board stolen. Once on scene, the subject told offi-cers he may have known who hit him even though he couldn’t actually see the person do so. He was seen by medical personnel and transported to the hospital for his head wound.

In March, Chief Financial Officer Al Juarez announced his retirement to the Bonney Lake City Council.

Juarez held his position for seven years, and has worked in government finance for the last 28 years. Juarez’s last day was Tuesday.

Juarez said that he started working in government finance because he thought he “could make a differ-ence,” especially since government financing was so far behind private sec-

tor financing at the time. “I am very comfortable with my deci-

sion to retire, knowing that the city is in good hands with the cur-rent professionals in my finance team,” Juarez said.

Cherie Gibson has been hired as the chief financial officer. Gibson was the financial direc-tor of Normandy Park before coming to Bonney Lake.

During his retirement, Juarez said he plans to golf, remodel

the house, spend quality time with his grandchildren, and “do a great deal of travel, in the US and abroad,” especially to historic Civil War sites.

Robert M. Gates is probably the only secretary of defense who can claim to have had a “honeymoon” for his entire four and one-half years of service, serv-ing under a Republican president, George W. Bush, and then a Democratic one, Barack Obama. Gates has

written a book called “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War.” As borne out in his book, Gates had clear goals to bring a lasting positive outcome to the War in Iraq. He

has both praise and criticism for the presidents he served.

Gates admits the Bush administration made many major mistakes in getting us involved in the war in Iraq, but he also found President Bush willing to listen, and a much better leader, especially in the last two years of his term when Gates served as his “secdef,” than he has been given credit for. Gates never saw the military as trying to “jam” Bush deeper into commitment in Iraq and Afghanistan as opposed to how Obama and his advisers feel about Obama’s term.

The former secretary of defense is probably saying “I told you so” as he observes the Sunni Islamic State resurgence in Syria and Iraq. His goal as Secretary of Defense was to keep just such an event from occurring. His view was that the U.S. had to maintain a strong

Gates likely glad his job is done

(Editor’s notes: Eric published a three-part series title “Biking with Mormons” in the Covington-Maple Valley-Black Diamond

Reporter beginning July 25.)

Laura and I had just returned from a weekend away and were searching for a place to park in Capitol Hill.

The man on the street corner in front of our apartment building held what appeared to be a long leaf, or maybe a feather, like a broad-sword. It looked as if he were attempting to start a fire — like a confused caveman unsure of his tools and what he was doing in the heart of Seattle.

We searched for an open space, circling around the area for roughly 10 minutes. Of course, a spot cleared about 15 feet from the man. Good spot, bad timing.

We sat in the car longer than we usual-ly would, watching to make sure we were safe to get out and grab our luggage. He would move along. At least, we hoped he would. His shaggy unkempt hair made it

hard to see his eyes.Did we want to help this man? Sure.

I suppose. There are plenty of homeless people in the Seattle area that need as-sistance. Some are on drugs, others suffer from mental illness and a few might just be unlucky. But, in the unrefined darkness of a few street lamps, this didn’t seem like an appropriate time to find out. Or even to be compassionate.

That’s when I asked myself, “What would the Mormons do?”

So, later, I called Sister Webb and asked.

She told me a story of a time on the mission when she approached a drunk man — she’s not good at noticing when

people are drunk, she said — who kept grabbing at her hand and face, straddling her bike and telling her to kiss him. She and Sister Pearson rode away, slightly raddled, but also not defeated.

“I would try to help as best as I could, but there is only so much you can do,” she told me. “At night – I guess I would have to follow how I feel. Definitely heav-

enly Father would help me if I should need to help — if I felt that was what I needed to be doing to help him or her. If I had an eerie feeling and felt this isn’t safe I would probably keep going. You don’t want to put yourself in harms way.”

Part of what I learned in my three-part series about biking with the Mormons is that there is nothing wrong with helping, or just talking to, others. Even when it is difficult or easy to pass over. That doesn’t mean you should try to be a superhero. It’s more a reminder of the incredible feeling that comes with being conscien-tious to others simply for the sake of it. That makes sense to me.

I don’t mean this with any religious connotations or as any kind of endorse-ment for proselytizing — that’s not my job or my mission. But as a journalist, I think it’s important to jump into ideas with an open mind and try to pass along a learning experience if there is one to be had. Over my eight-plus hours with Sister Webb and Sister Pearson, I not only learned a little about the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but also of the sisters’ true innocence and sincerity towards others.

Cassie said 17 years ago when he was born not much was known about his condi-tion.

Since then, she added, a number of studies have been done and roughly 1 in 10,000 people are affected by 1P36.

1P36 is usually a random event where genetic material on chromosome 1 are lost.

According to Opening Autism’s website, the sever-ity of associated conditions range from person to person. They can include structural abnormalities of the brain, seizures, low muscle tone, vision and hearing problems as well as other medical, physical and developmental conditions.

Paeyton is unable to walk and communicates with oth-ers using sign language.Cassie said she got the idea of applying to Make A Wish from friends who had done so. And Paeyton just made the cut, wishes are only granted to children ages 2 to 17.

At the time of applying, she was unsure of what the wish would be. Then they started

noticing Paeyton loved the idea of being outside.

Cassie said her parent’s had recently remodeled their home and added a deck that was accessible for Paeyton. She said anytime they were over, he would be out on the deck rain or shine.

Once Cassie found out Paeyton was eligible for a wish to be granted, she said she sat down with Paeyton to discuss what he’d want his wish to be.

Within Make A Wish, there are five different wishes that can be granted. You can Wish To Be, Wish To Meet, Wish To Go, Wish To Have and Wish To Give.

For the Pearson’s they decided Paeyton’s wish was to have a hot tub surrounded by a deck that he can easily get himself around.

The idea of the hot tub is helpful to his condition, he is able to work on his therapy at home.

Cassie said they are able to work on his balance, he can stretch his legs and he is able to reach for things all while in the hot tub.

A special aspect of the Pearson’s new spa is MicroSilk.

This creates micro bubbles that sooth the body. There are a number of benefits to having this technology and Cassie said it has helped Paeyton’s moods and has also helped him sleep better at night.

Paeyton as well as one of his sisters has Eczema and Cassie said the MicroSilk in the spa has helped both of them with their skin condi-tion.

When Paeyton scoots around and sits on the floor, Cassie said it is hard to always be on the same level as him and even so when he is sit-ting in a chair and they are standing.

But the hot tub has allowed Paeyton to be on the same level as his parents and his five younger siblings.

Cassie said she didn’t anticipate that aspect when they first asked for the hot tub.

“It’s the neatest thing,” Cassie said. “Now we are all on the same level. There is a connection of face time.”

Make A Wish works with about a $5,000 budget per wish. For the Pearsons that

paid for the hot tub.Through word of mouth

and community donations, they were able to get a new door that is easier for Paeyton to open as well as a new deck with railing.

After the work was com-pleted, the Pearson’s hosted a party. Paeyton had friends come over from school and they were able to enjoy the hot tub together.

“It was nice to see him socializing,” Make A Wish volunteer Dianna Whitley said.

Paeyton is a senior at White River High School. And through a program at the school, Cassie said he will be able to attend until he is 21 years old.

The program provides speech and cognitive therapy for Paeyton.

And after this year, Cassie said, he will be able to start working. The program pro-vides half day of school and half day of working so those in the program can make a transition into the working world.

Cassie said it is unknown what Paeyton’s job will entail

but she said he loves to be read to and the idea of him going to elementary schools and having kids read to him is a possibility.

Paeyton’s wish would not have been possible without his Make A Wish volunteers Dianna Whitley, Collette Meyer and Julie Spencer.

A number of community members also helped grant his wish.

Marquis Spas provided the spa with MicroSilk that was delivered and installed by Aqua Rec’s.

Arrow Lumber and BMC

West Corporation provided material for the deck.

Zetterberg Quality Homes designed and installed the deck along with the railing from Pro Rail.

Beddow Electric sent Todd Fleming to help with electric work in setting up the spa.

Safeway and Ben Franklin’s donations helped with deco-rations for the party. And Haggen donated the cake. Westside Pizza donated piz-zas for the party.

And family and friends of the Pearson’s also helped by donating.

The beginning of the school year is a great time to review your 2014 fit-ness goals and recharge the passion and energy to achieve results. Sending the kids back to school can provide the structure to reset positive routines for many families. For those without kids at home, it is an opportunity to retrieve your internal imprinted scholastic calendar for a

fresh start.The first

step is to assess you goals and c o n s i d e r what is reasonable to accom-plish dur-ing the remaining 18 weeks of the year. We recommend setting behavior goals that promote a healthy life-style rather than achiev-ing a specific target which may not be sustainable. For example, developing a habit of 30 minutes of

p h y s i -cal activ-ity for five days per week is a foun-d a t i o n a l goal that may also support a

target goal of completing a 5-kilometer walking or running event this fall.

Second, declare your goal by writing in down and keeping it visible so you see it every day. Also, share it with your family and friends to invite them

to support you by joining you on the activity or pro-viding encouragement.

Third, create a tracking tool (or find an app) to visibly track your prog-ress. Post in the kitchen or share online so family and friends can see it and celebrate with you as you progress toward success.

Fourth, listen to your body and give yourself permission to adjust the pace or intensity of the physical activity to avoid injuries. If you feel pain, dizziness or nausea, take a break. Also, be f lexible;

if you are not feeling well, give yourself permission to take a day off.

As always, contact your health care provider if your condition does not improve.

Fifth, have fun with pursuing your fitness goals. Break things up, vary the activities and go to new places to get physi-cal. Late summer and early fall is a fabulous time to hike Mount Rainier, bike the Puyallup River trail or walk Redondo Beach.

Starting a fitness rou-tine is an important deci-

sion. Using the momen-tum of the new school year can help you establish a healthy habit that that lasts a lifetime.

Best wishes for your continued success.

presence in Iraq for a long time. Without that pres-ence Iraq would see the resurgence of sectarian strife that would plague the Iraqis and our nation for decades. President Obama’s goal was to get out of Iraq and to keep his promise to end U.S. participation in the war.

Gates would also prob-ably blame President Obama for not working hard enough to influence the Iraqi government to allow the American mili-tary to stay beyond their December 2011 pullout date. President Obama wanted a law passed by Iraq’s Parliament to pro-tect American soldiers from prosecution in Iraq. Expecting the Iraqi Parliament to do this while not being very effective himself in getting legis-lation passed in the U.S. Congress must seem ironic to Gates.

The Iraqi leadership wanted U.S. soldiers to stay after their pullout date, according to Gates, but they feared public opposi-tion to any more foreign occupation. As a result, Americans left, helping to create the situation we see today in Iraq.

Gates stated in his book that the Bush Administration chose al-Maliki as Shia Prime Minister of Iraq because he was weak. But he has become too strong and

is now unwilling to cede power. He has been too parochial, favoring the Shias over the minority Sunni Muslims who have now risen up and taken over half the country. Al-Maliki also replaced Sunni military officers with Shia political allies, who have little knowl-edge of leading the mili-tary. These decisions have helped the Sunni upris-ing and the Iraqi military defeats.

Being patriotic and car-ing deeply as a “soldiers’ defense secretary” for those who fought, were wounded and who died in that war, Gates must be grieving the loss of cities like Mosul and Fallujah to IS. During his time at Defense, and with Gen. Patraeus as his gener-al, they were able to get the Sunni majority to become allies against al-Qaeda and to end much of the violence in Iraq after the surge.

Two and one-half years after the U.S. military with-drawal, half of Iraq and part of Syria are under con-trol of the IS and the Kurds are virtually independent. Iraq, with al-Maliki’s insis-tence on favoring his fel-low Shias, has alienated the Sunnis who have risen up with a strict, violent and intolerant response, pub-licly executing hundreds, and driving Christians and other religious minorities out from their area of con-trol.

As I watched Frontline’s “Losing Iraq” and read Gates’ “Duty,” I pondered whether the IS takeover

could have been avoided. The answer is not easy. President Obama had to deal with a “war weary” nation that had made con-tinued military occupa-tion.

Is Obama having second thoughts since the rise of IS? His decision to bomb this past week shows that he has. He has said he won’t send combat soldiers back to Iraq. His current policy approach is to force neigh-bors like Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia to deal with their own regional issues. The U.S. can’t be stretched too thin because it takes away options in other parts of the world, like Asia and Europe.

Additionally, Iran, already tied up with its ally, the Shia Hezbollah forces fighting against Assad in Syria, is now even more threatened by the Sunni Muslim resurgence in Iraq. That should keep them busy for a long time and diverted away from trying to create a new Shia Persian Empire in the Middle East. We may find it easier to get an agreement from Iran over its nuclear buildup. All is not bad, since Israel does not feel pressure from Hezbollah on its northern border while dealing with Hamas in Gaza.

Where will all this unrest in the Middle East lead? We will see the reper-cussions played out in our lifetimes. Decisions made in 2003 still haunt us today. I’m betting Robert Gates is thankful his watch as sec-retary of defense is done.

ELFERS FROM 6

Let’s make sure all kids remain safe, respected

As we enter a new school year let’s not forget the mil-lions of kids in this country who are living with poverty or fear. The millions of kids in this country who are bul-lied and persecuted for being different than the majority in their school.

Let’s face it, a redneck wouldn’t do well in a New York City school. A city kid

doesn’t do well in a coun-try school. We see it every day on the playgrounds, in our parks, in class and in the hallways.

There are also cases where the teacher has been the class bully. Reading essays that were turned in about suicide fantasies and bullying brings it home. What is wrong with our schools here that we need child therapists coming to school. They hold our system accountable. They hold secu-rity, teachers, and adminis-tration accountable. One of our own has been bullied to the point of unrelenting anguish. What was once a safe learning environment

has become a place of fear and anger. Beaten in front of security only to have them do nothing is degrading.

On behalf of all who have been bullied or live in fear with domestic violence I thank you. I thank you for your bravery, I thank you for your courage to stand another day and face the foe that calls themselves a fellow classmate or family member.

With the new school year upon us it is our duty as par-ents and staff to make sure we give these kids a voice.

I’m glad that there are people who volunteer their time to help those in need. The sisters admitted they know they are sometimes taken advantage of in that regard, but they also feel it’s their job to help. Even if for only 18 months. And they

can feel good about that. I’d like to think that is true no matter what religion you’re representing.

Hopefully my stories are representative of the good that can come from belief, whether you think Mormons are wonderful, evil or some-where in between.

Laura and I ended up walking past the shaggy man,

eyeing him the entire way, as he harmlessly paced along the street. We didn’t help. We didn’t talk to him. We looked at him as threatening.

But as we walked, I told Laura that I wished we didn’t have to treat people that way. She agreed. Safety first, but humanity needs to be a close second.

I’m glad we talked about it.

Winning weekend for Lucarelli By Dennis Box

EditorTrainer Frank Lucarelli

picked up his second consec-utive stakes victory Saturday after scoring a win Aug. 10 in the Emerald Derby.

Trackattacker, a 2-year-old gelding, muscled his way to finish first in the 6-1/2 fur-long $50,000 Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Lads Stakes at Emerald Downs.

On Sunday Aug. 10, Lucarelli, an Enumclaw resident, won the Emerald Derby with Mebossman in a thriller at the wire against race favorites Del Rio Harbor and Noosito, both trained by Doris Harwood. Juan Gutierrez was riding.

Mebossman is a 3-year-old Washington-bred by Petionville out of Peaceful Wings and was bred by Buckley residents Rick and Debbie Pabst on Blue Ribbon Farm, which has been in operation since 1973.

WTBOA LadsSaturday, Trackattacker

set a WTBOA Lads stakes record in 1 minute, 16.19 sec-onds.

Trackattacker is unde-feated in three starts, all at Emerald Downs, and has col-lected $59,318 in earnings.

Following the race, jockey Leslie Mawing said, “He’s a strong horse and he was pret-ty much the giant in this race. I just wanted to extend his stride and let him run free.”

Mawing, who has ridden the winner in the last eight stakes at the Auburn oval, said Trackattacker is, “at the top of the list of 2-year-olds I’ve ever ridden.”

The gelding broke from the second post position and went straight to the front extending his margin at every call, finishing the race seven lengths ahead of Moby who ran second.

He paid $2.10 for a win and $2.10 for both show and place.

Lucarelli said the plan is to run Trackattacker next in the $50,000 Daily Racing Form Dennis Dodge Stakes on Washington Cup Day, Sept. 7, and the $65,000 Gottstein Futurity Sept. 28.

“You never know with 2-year-olds, but as long as he’s healthy, that’s the plan,” Lucarelli said.

Lucarelli won the Gottstein Futurity and the Lads in 2008 with Gallant Son. The 8-year-old son of Malabar Gold has earned $552,278 lifetime and is still running and winning. Gallant Son won the Jess Jackson Owners’ Handicap at Santa Rosa Aug. 10. He has a record of 11-2-6 from 39 starts.

Trackattacker, the son of Harbor The Gold out of Eclatante is owned by R.E.V. Racing, the nom de plume of Roy and Ellie Schaefer of Port Orchard.

Emerald DerbyMebossman’s Emerald

Derby victory was the first stakes win for the bay geld-ing. He is 3-3-1 from 12 starts finishing second in the 2013 edition of the Gottstein Futurity to Del Rio Harbor.

Mebossman ran the 1-1/8 mile derby in 1:47.23 paying $13, $5.40 and $2.60.

The gelding ran out of the four hole and came from three lengths back in the stretch to run down Noosito and edging Del Rio Harbor by a neck at the wire.

Mebossman’s win check was $41,250 increasing his lifetime earnings to $109,917.

The bear that was seen search-ing for food and was caught last week in Sumner was released back

into the wild.Washington Department of

Fish and Wildlife Officer Bruce Richards transported the bear deep into the woods to release it.

The trained Karelian bear dog, Coulter, that helped capture the bear last week also helped release it.

Coulter chased the bear into

the woods to make sure it stayed in there.

According to a report on King 5 News, the use of bear dogs is helping to prevent the number of bears the department used to kill rather than capture and release.

At the time of press, there was no new information regarding the bear seen in Bonney Lake.

The statewide burn ban put in effect by the Department of Natural

Resources has been extend-ed.

The ban is set to lift on September 30.

The department announced Friday, due to

recent changes in weather, recreational campfires are permitted in estab-lished fire rings in official campgrounds west of the Cascades.

All other outdoor burning on department land remains prohibited.

However, campfires in State Parks east of the mountains are still prohib-ited until further notice.

Those caught starting or spreading fires are subject to civil and criminal penalties.

The fire season usually runs through October and so far this year, according to the Department of Natural Resources, more than $91 million has been spent so far fighting more than 350,000 burned acres across the state.

The burn ban applies to land under the depart-

ment’s protection, it does not include federally owned lands.

For more information regarding the burn ban, visit the department’s web-site, www.dnr.wa.gov or Washington State Park’s website, www.parks.wa.gov.

The middle of August is the best time to bait for slugs. Dry weather may mean you don’t see these slimy crea-tures, but all the slug eggs that were laid earlier in the summer will begin to hatch as soon as the nights grow longer. Baiting for slugs and snails in August will keep the population under control for the fall gar-dening season.

New slug baits are pet and vegetable safe so invest in slug control now.

August is also a good time of year to dig, divide or transplant early-sum-mer perennials like iris, poppies and pulmonar-ia or lungwart. Do not move peonies or shrubs until fall when the weath-er cools and the rain returns.

Raspberry plants that gave fruit in June will have yellow canes this month and these can be cut all the way to the

ground. Everbearing raspberries still giving fruit can be harvested until they stop producing berries; then cut back the oldest canes by one-half.

Q. I am growing dill plants and

want to store the seeds for winter use. How does one harvest and store dill seed? B.P.

A. Dill is a great herb because it is

easy to grow and both the foliage and seeds are great for f lavoring food. To harvest the seed, cut the f lower umbels or clusters when the oldest seeds in the bottom of the cluster start to turn black. Place the entire seed head in a shoe box and store in a cool, dry spot. In a few weeks you can shake

the ripe seeds onto paper and then pour them into a glass container with a tight-fitting lid for stor-age.

Q. I am growing several types of

basil. One has beautiful purple blooms. Must I clip off the f lowers of the basil plant to keep the leaves coming? H., email

A. You can remove half the basil

blooms and enjoy the purple majesty of the other half but if you allow your basil to f lower in late summer it will take a vacation from mak-ing new foliage and your fresh supply of basil will dwindle. Keep your basil plants well watered and fertilized in hot weather and you can be enjoying new foliage and making pesto until the first frost.

Q. My neighbor told me not to fertil-

ize my roses in August or they will die in the win-ter. Is this advice true of false? Anonymous

Firewood, Fuel& Stoves

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet . Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To make a f i r ewood complaint, call 360-902- 1857.

A. False. Feeding roses late in the

summer will not cause them to die but it can make them more sus-ceptible to an early frost because feeding promotes tender new growth. To keep your roses in bloom all autumn you should continue to deadhead or remove the faded f lowers from hybrid tea roses and other varieties that are repeat bloomers. Some roses such as climbers, species and old-fashioned varieties only bloom once in the summer. These will not rebloom no matter what you do so don’t feed the “once and done” roses this month so they can slip into winter dorman-

cy with ease. Roses are thirsty plants and they will attract more disease and insects if you allow the roots to dry out.
