On Tuesday, Sept. 16, Enumclaw resident Gary Gookstetter, 79, walked into the Sound Credit Union on state Route 410 in Bonney Lake wear-ing a ski hat and carrying a rep-lica pistol with the intent to rob the bank.

He succeeded, leaving the credit union with an undisclosed amount of money in hand but he didn’t make it far. Bonney

Lake police officers were waiting outside for him as he exited the credit union and made his way to his vehicle that was parked right outside.

Sgt. Ron Sasaki was on a rou-tine patrol driving through the parking lot of City Hall when word of the robbery came from dispatch.

“It was great timing for us, bad for him,” Officer Daron Wolschleger said. “Depending on how you look at it.”

According to the charging

documents Gookstetter told the manager, “I want money. I don’t want to shoot.”

Gookstetter then handed the manager a sign that read “closed” and told her to put it on the door and lock the door.

After the manager did, Gookstetter pulled out two white garbage bags and told the staff to fill them with money.

The manager and another employee emptied the drawers into his bags and explained to him that one of them was locked, according to the charging docu-ments.

Then he directed them to the safe but they told him that they

could not access it.According to the charging

documents, Gookstetter told them to go into the bathroom and wait five minutes and not to make any phone calls.

In order to leave, the manager told Gookstetter that he would need a key to exit. After she gave him the key, he left and they remained in the bathroom.

A few moments later, employ-ees looked out the window and saw Gookstetter was surrounded by officers.

The Bonney Lake City Council amended the Washington State University Forest agreement during the Sept. 16 workshop to allow a traffic light at the future intersection of 204 Avenue East and state Route 410. The amendment passed 4-3.

“The council has worked hard over the last year or so to make sure the amendment was solid and benefit the citi-zens,” said Mayor Neil Johnson. “Connectivity and traffic flow were the biggest issues for the council, which were worked on extensively through the committee process with help from staff.”

The WSU agreement, passed by the City Council in 2009, allows Bonney Lake to develop 40 acres of the WSU Forest to attract commercial and medical business.

The original agreement, which also connected 204 Avenue East to state Route 410, did not allow for a traffic light to be installed at the future intersection.

The traffic light will allow drivers going west on SR 410 to turn left onto 204 Avenue East.

There is currently no plan to allow drivers going east on SR 410 to turn left onto 204 Avenue East.

The amendment also included language for the Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Development Company to talk to the Regal Movie Theater property owners and discuss connecting the parking lots of the two properties, which Johnson said, “is critical for the flow of traffic in that area.”

After a touchdown and a field goal, the Hornets led 10-7 at the end of the first.

Sumner scored three touchdowns in the sec-ond quarter to take the

The Spartans stopped the Hornets on fourth down in the final quarter.

Sophomore running back Connor Wedington scored on a 58 yard run. Sumner’s extra point was blocked and the Spartans

led 34-17.With 6:33 to go in the

Seniors swung, spun and did the hula to live music during their annual luau at the Bonney Lake senior cen-ter last Thursday.

This year, Northwest Blend came to the center to play an array of Hawaiian and Hawaiian-stylized music while seniors danced and ate Kahlua pork and sweet mashed potatoes.

“Seniors love getting together with friends and we provide that venue,” said senior aide Jan Smith, who helped organize the luau.

Smith said that the seniors love music events the most, and love to dance.

According to the National Institution of Health, music and long-term memory are strongly linked. Musical tunes and lyrics are associ-ated with the prefrontal cor-tex, located behind the eyes. According to the National Institution of Health, this section of the brain links

memory and music together, which can help Alzheimer’s or dementia patients recall memories that are associated with music.

The prefrontal cortex also helps prepare the body for physical movement like dancing, according to the National Institute of Health, and is one of the last parts of the brain to be affected by Alzheimer’s or other demen-tia.

On Tuesdays, Smith said they often have jam sessions, where seniors gather together at the center and play music on their own instruments for each other, inviting both the musically talented and chal-lenged to join them.

“We encourage them to get out and be with oth-ers,” Smith said. “We have so much fun putting these things together.”

Manu Lono and Moana Kokame also came to dem-onstrate various Hawaiian dance styles for the seniors. Earlier in September, they

performed at the Seattle Center for a very large

crowd, Lono said. Lono has been teaching

dance for more than 45 years, and “was brought up in a

family of hula and music,” she said.

I figured it was just one of those classic jeweler jokes. The ring specialist, an older, gentle looking man, had

emerged from the back room and sat down in front of me.“Sorry I’ve been back there so long,” he said, matter-of-

factly. “The stone popped out of the setting and now I can’t find it.”

I smile and laugh. He is too calm to be serious. Though he is sweating rather profusely.

“Wait, are you serious?” I ask, my smile slip-ping.

“Oh yeah, it just popped out,” he replied. “I’m sure it will show

up though. Couldn’t have gone too far.”This was not the news I’d wanted to hear.My easygoing, moderately paced engagement plan had

already taken an unexpected turn. My hopefully-future-fiance, Laura, had recently been notified that she’d be deployed to Africa to help with the Ebola outbreak (a dif-ferent story for a different time). That left me with five days to complete my multi-month find-the-absolutely-perfect ring process before she left. Assuming, of course, my twi-light blue Montana sapphire surfaced from this apparent gemstone Bermuda Triangle.

I don’t mention the specific sapphire I eventually pro-posed with to brag — mainly because it wasn’t that expen-sive. But, I must admit, I’ve become relatively proficient in the jewelry department over the last four or five months.

My good friend’s mom is a jeweler in Pennsylvania and

There is no mention of education in the Constitution. If that is the case, and it is, why is the federal government so deeply involved? Studies and poli-cies variously labeled: federalism, A Nation At Risk, No Child Left Behind, and Common Core Standards are now being hotly debated as our new K-12 school year begins. To understand the current state of education in the light of history, let’s go back and look at it.

When the Constitution was created in 1787, the assumption under federal-ism was that power would be divided between the states and the federal government. Education would be the under control of the states, as would marriages and divorces.

This was pretty much the standard for many years, with each state doing whatever it thought best for its con-stituents when it came to education.

When the 14th Amendment of the Constitution was ratified in 1870, new terms arose to deal with the ending of slavery: States were forbidden from, “depriving any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor to any person within its juris-diction the equal protection of the laws.”

Federalism and the 14th Amendment clashed with the creation of Jim Crow laws enacted in the South.

Blacks and whites did not have equal education.

The terms “due process of law” and “equal protection of the laws” first formed the basis of the landmark deci-sion in the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision of 1896, which enshrined states’ rights to segregate blacks and whites – as long as the edu-cation was equal.

Nearly 60 years later the Court reversed itself in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas decision. In this judgment the Supreme Court ruled that separate education of blacks and whites was not equal and therefore must end. The Civil Rights movement began as a result and the federal government forcibly stepped in to Southern schools to end segrega-tion.

In 1981, during the presidency of the conservative Ronald Reagan, a study came out called “A Nation at Risk.”

The report was a “scathing appraisal of public education” according to an article by Sarah Garland in the Aug. 17, 2014, Christian Science Monitor article entitled, “US Education: How We Got Where We Are Today.”

A federal commission, made up officials from business, government and education, had studied U.S. schools and found they were not com-petitive with the U.S.’s current rival at that time, Japan. SAT and stan-dardized test scores were dropping. American students were not competi-tive on the world market. Something had to be done. “Twenty-three million Americans were functionally illiter-ate.” Worse still, American and their schools were complacent and crum-bling, “threatening the very fabric of society.”

This report sent off a shock wave across the nation, according to Garland, that is still being felt today. Schools are still in sitting in the cor-ners with dunce caps and many of the principles from “A Nation at Risk” are now engrained in American educa-tion.

The “Nation at Risk” report had five legs now found in the controver-sial Common Core Standards. These

School has started, football sea-son is upon us, temperatures are falling and the political season is heating up. Public participa-tion is necessary to our democ-racy, whether we are involved in a national election or a local school levy. As the western writer Louis L’Amour said, “To make democ-racy work, we must be a nation of participants.”

I appreciate citizens who are

passionately involved in the civic arena. As with many aspects of life, however, we should not let our passion trump our common sense.

Yard signs are part of the politi-cal process in Washington. There are times, however, when they may look like litter. As the song says, “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind.” While it

may be tempting to dispose of political signs, it is illegal. In Washington, it is a misdemeanor for a person to remove or deface lawfully placed political advertis-ing, which includes yard signs. A misdemeanor is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Each sign removed or defaced is a separate crime.

If the sign is on public prop-erty or the right of way, assume it is there legally. If you believe it is not legally placed, check with the county or city. Do not appoint yourself as Sign Cop.

While yard signs may be

annoying, especially those that represent positions or candidates we disagree with, they are not lit-ter. Political signs are the look of democracy. America’s greatness derives from our people and our democratic principles. Each of us

who participates in the political process does so because we want to help make our community a better place to live. That’s an American principle. As part of the process, we are free to dis-agree. That’s another American principle. Stealing or defacing the signs of those we disagree with is not only illegal, it is un-American.Enjoy the political season, enter

the arena, improve our commu-nity, and appreciate every yard sign you pass – it’s the look of democracy.

And don’t forget to vote.

she’s always been brilliant when picking out neck-laces, earrings and charms for Laura in the past. I’d planned to lean on her. A lot. Too much. Actually, I’d hoped she’d just imme-diately send me Laura’s ideal ring without me hav-ing to do anything.

I quickly discovered that isn’t how engagement ring shopping works.

I’d worked at a jewelry store in high school, but never actually internalized any of the information. After months of stressing over rose gold vs. white gold, and half bezels and princess cuts, I felt that I’d mastered the bling basics.

Knowing that Laura

wanted something a bit understated, I asked her how big a diamond is too big.

“Oh, I don’t want a dia-mond at all,” she told me.

Apparently, Laura read an article about De Beers and the billion dollar mar-keting scam they’d man-aged to pull on the world. She may have told me these feelings before, but I thought they were sim-ply a reaction to reading the article. Turns out they were a steadfast belief.

Just my luck, the girl of my dreams doesn’t want me spending thousands of dollars on a diamond. Well, seriously, though. That meant starting over.

I eventually re-started the process and ordered a few separated pieces, hop-

ing to mix and match for a winner. They arrived in the mail alongside the news of Laura’s deploy-ment.

Decisions are not my forte, but this made the choice easy: Put the pieces I had together as fast as possible.

Thus, as the Seattle jew-eler explained pricing and possibilities to me, disre-garding the fact that my center stone was nowhere to be found, a lady rushed through the door with my blue baby in her hand. She’d found it laying in the far corner.

The jeweler grabbed the stone and made an audible sigh of relief. Then he looked up at me and quipped, “Hey, at least we know it rolls well.”

standards were meant to solve the problems in education. They are found today in 41 states: “improving content, rais-ing standards, overhaul-ing the teaching profes-sion, adding time to the school day and year, and improving leadership and fiscal support,” according to Garland.

The Republican George W. Bush administra-tion and a Republican Congress passed “No Child Left Behind,” which helped institute standard-ized testing across the nation. It also created the stigma of “failed schools” which we in Washington

state and elsewhere are dealing with now under Democratic President Barack Obama who insti-tuted “Race to the Top” and allowed for waivers to give time to the states to conform to NCLB.

Washington state recently rejected being forced to have its teach-ers evaluated by these standardized tests and the state lost $40 mil-lion in federal funding. Approximately 80 per-cent of its schools are now “failing” and are required to send letters to parents notifying them of their status.

There are a number of ironies that scream at me from this twisted educational history: Republicans complain

that government is too big, yet it was Republicans who unconstitutionally encroached upon the role of the states over educa-tion.

A Democratic presi-dent elected with the aid of unions is now pun-ishing union members in Washington state for refusing to obey NCLB, a program enacted by a Republican president. Meanwhile, the nation that spawned “A Nation at Risk,” Japan, has been in the economic dol-drums for more than 20 years.

This is all a little mind numbing. Politics and logic seem to be mutually exclusive terms, especial-ly when it comes to public education.

Pets often make ideal companions. They are around when a person needs support, they can provide protection for those living alone, they’re always willing to lend an ear to problems, and many tend to offer uncon-ditional love.

Seniors facing an empty nest or the loss of a spouse may find pets can buoy their spirits. Studies have shown that seniors can benefit both mentally and physically from having a pet around. Pets can alle-viate anxiety, depression and boredom.

While pets can provide comfort and compan-ionship, they remain a significant responsibil-ity. Seniors should find an animal that will fit in with their lifestyles. This is an important consid-eration for those seniors who travel frequently or have mobility issues. In addition, men and women living in senior commu-

nities or assisted living facilities should deter-mine if there are any pet restrictions in place.

Those seniors who have decided that a dog will be the best fit can choose among several breeds that may be a good match for their needs. When select-ing a dog, consider both size and temperament. Smaller dogs tend to be easier to handle and will need less maintenance. They are easily carried and won’t take as long to bathe and groom. Smaller dogs also consume less food than larger breeds, reducing the expense of dog food and the hassle of wrangling large, heavy bags of chow.

Temperament is also important, as some breeds tend to be more easygo-ing than others. Larger breeds may be prefer-able to a smaller breeds, which tend to be hyper-active. However, always remember there are pros

and cons to each breed, and each dog will demon-strate his own personal-ity traits. The following are some dogs that can be especially compatible with seniors.

PugEqually playful and

willing to be a lap dog, the pug requires little exercise and grooming. The breed is typically nonaggressive and sub-missive. Pugs are good-natured and playful; they don’t often bark and are easy to train.

Shih TzuThe Shih Tzu lives for

attention, but this breed can be dominant and difficult to train. The Shih Tzu will be alert to its surroundings and, despite its small stature, can be a good watchdog.

PomeranianPomeranians look like

big balls of fur and can bring a smile to an own-er’s face. The breed tends to be perky, can display dominance and can be difficult to train. Because Pomeranians can be dog-aggressive, they may be best as the only pet in the house.

Yorkshire terrierThe Yorkie is a diminu-

tive breed in size only, as they tend to have exu-berant personalities that dwarf their stature. The ideal lap dog, Yorkies want to lie around and lounge, though some do like to bark. If the fur is kept short in a “puppy cut,” the dog can be easy to maintain.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

This medium-sized dog hails from Wales and typically requires only moderate exercise and little grooming. They are easy to train and mod-erately dominant. They don’t bark excessively, and they often get along with other dogs.

Schnauzer

Available in three sizes, Schnauzers are good companions and protec-tors. This is an intelligent and loyal breed and will need to be kept amused to stave off boredom.

Brussels GriffonThese dogs do not shed,

but they will require professiona l groom-ing at least once every 3 months. If socialized early, the Griffon can be a good companion but will likely remain wary of strangers. They are good watchdogs and devoted to their owners.

As summer winds down it is time to take stock of what worked and what did not in the garden. There are many new plants and prod-ucts out there, but these products deserve three green thumbs up because they deliver what they promise.

Copper Rain Chains

These look great as a replacement for ugly gut-ters in your garden but do they last in our very wet cli-mate? Three green thumbs up for the heavy duty cop-per rain chain that has been directing water into my rain barrel for the last 10 years. There has been no rusting or broken parts and the only maintenance is that every few years I take it down to hose out any collected debris to keep the water flowing. During the depths of winter it is nice to see the cascade of flowing water as one cup overflows and spills into the next so every rainy day becomes a water show. Rain chains now come in many designs and styles and can be shortened by removing the water-catch cups to fit the height of your water barrel or to take the water right to the ground level

and into a gravel-filled catch basin or rain garden. Rain chains may be very ornamental replace-ments for gutters, but they are also environ-mentally friendly and lower the water bill by harvesting rain water to recycle onto plants. You can find rain chains at local nurseries or view different styles and learn more about how to use them online at www.Rain Chains Direct.

Advanced Mosquito Control with

ThermaCELL lantern

This new product begins with the natural repelling properties of a citronella candle and takes it up a notch by using oil-infused tabs in a battery-powered lantern. There are no cords, no sound and no fragrance. I suspect this lantern was designed for camping trips but it works great in the garden or on a patio. A propane switch heats up the oil and controls the slow release of the repellent. We have the perfect patio to test any mosquito control product and I am happy to report that this lightweight

lantern really works to keep away flying insects. It protects you from insects

within a 15-foot range and works best when set on the ground as the scent flows upward. You will need to reload the citronella cartridge when the scent wears out and a color indicator tells you when this is needed. Tiny propane cartridges come with the lantern and can be reordered online as needed. The ThermaCELL lantern is at chain stores and box stores or you can order it from Amazon for less than $30.

Dwarf Dahlias that don’t need staking – with full-sized

flowers

These are dahlias from a tuber that don’t need stak-

ing. In my garden they stayed a compact and tidy 3 feet tall with multiple

blooms from the begin-ning of August until frost. Dahlias are ten-der bulbs which mean you must protect them from winter weather. The safest way is to dig the tuber out of the ground in late autumn after the foliage turns yellow on the plant. Cut off the remaining stems

and leaves and let the tuber air dry indoors for a few days. Then place the dahlia tuber into a paper bag and store in a cold but not freez-ing garage or shed. Replant your dahlias in May for another summer of blooms. Compact dahlias includ-ing the hot pink Art Deco and soft yellow and blush Monet are available from Longfield Gardens or your local nursery in the spring. Lazy gardeners or gambling gardeners that don’t want to dig dahlia tubers each fall can cut the stems to the ground in November and cover the tops with a tarp or a pile of sword fern fronds to keep out winter rains. If you keep dahlia tubers in the ground dry all winter they will survive our Western Washington win-ters without digging.

Sluggo or Worry Free pelleted slug bait

Both companies that make these pet-safe slug baits use the same active ingredient (iron phos-phate). Both work well to control slugs especially if you remember to use the bait in spring and again at the end of summer. Just be warned that you won’t see slimy dead slugs and snails after spreading this bait. It works by making the slugs and snails anorexic so they crawl back under their stones and never eat again. This product may not be cheap, but it is effective and if you’ve lost plants to slugs and snails you’ll under-stand why this safe slug bait is worth the investment.

Compact Pee Gee Hydrangeas

The hydrangea panicu-lata or Pee Gee hydrangea is the tree-like hydrangea that thrives in full sun but with cone-shaped creamy white turning to russet flowers. This late bloomer looks spectacular in the fall garden but the old varieties needed lots of room. A new

dwarf Pee Gee called Bobo Pee Gee is now available that grows 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall. Expect it to grow taller and wider in our mild climate as I never trust the sizes on those nursery tags. This compact hydrangea would do well in a patio or small garden area that needs late summer color – plus you get huge blooms that can be dried and enjoyed indoors. Compact Bobo Pee Gee hydrangea is a Proven Winners plant that you should be able to find at area nurseries.

Heroin, meth are bigger problem on Plateau than many realize

In regards to Heath Rainwater’s article in the (Sept. 3) Courier-Herald, Church Corner, which I found to be in touch with what is going on with the drug culture here on the Plateau.

Heroin and meth are a much bigger problem than

some people are aware of. I was so glad to see that Mr. Rainwater addressed so many issues that we face as a community. Children are orphaned because of drug abuse and parents are losing their kids due to the over-whelming drug use here. The actual number of overdoses are not reported to the pub-lic. Not everyone dies from an overdose.

I am a paralegal and have several clients who are deal-ing with the death of a loved one due to habitual drug abuse. I heard first-hand that there was a bad batch of her-oin that came around during

the summer and I know of at least four people who died from its use. This has ripped families apart and the rehab centers are flooded with calls about meth and heroin. The police are working with a task force that meets and dis-cusses the latest issues in the “war on drugs.” Educating is their main focus, but some parents wonder if all the drug education in schools could be adding to the allure of drugs, or making students desensi-tized to it.

Drug addiction knows no race, color, religion or tribe, and is an equal opportunity offender. Even the under-

cover police who work with dealers large and small are at risk of addiction. It is a dangerous line that they walk in order to do their job, but a necessary one. It wasn’t that long ago that an officer was let go for stealing from the evidence room.

Addiction can touch any family. We have all heard the saying “a family that prays together stays together,” and think they are the perfect family, but in fact could very well have a son or daughter with an addiction to these powerful drugs. No family is immune to it, and if you have a teen, are a teen, or

know someone that is and is dealing with these issues you can go to Enumclaw Youth and Family Services on Cole street, or you can call them at 360-825-4586. Adults with addiction issues can go to Sound Mental Health in Auburn and call them at 253-876-7610, or Valley Cities in Auburn at 253-336-4577. An addict is someone who can’t stop drinking or doing

drugs, and it interferes with their day-to-day activities, as well as hurting relation-ships or putting their job in jeopardy. Finding yourself at this crossroad, knowing that there is help and getting it are two different things. Some say they aren’t worth the trouble, and others say I don’t want to stop. They say

The intersection and traffic light are expected to be completed in 2015. The developer of the project will be respon-sible for the cost of the traffic light.

The traffic light will be synced to the six other lights between 192 Avenue East and 214 Avenue East. Transportat ion engineering agents from Weyerhaeuser claim that the addition of a sev-enth light will slightly decrease peak hour travel time for both east and west bound drivers.

The Seatt le f irm T r a n s p o r t a t i o n Engineering NorthWest

indicated that SR 410 traffic f low will be slower overall with an addition-al traffic light, but traffic would be better guided with a traffic light than by an unsignaled right in, right out system adjacent to the highway’s east-bound lane.

The City Council sched-uled a public hearing on the amendment on Sept. 9, and moved the vote to the workshop in order to discuss one citizen com-ment and a 2005 email from the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“We wanted to make sure they got on the record and were dis-cussed accordingly,” said Johnson. “The council did a good job in getting

all questions answered.”The 2005 email from

WSDOT said that the department would not support a traffic light installation at that time. In an earlier interview this year, Johnson said that WSDOT will review their decision if the traf-fic light “is justifiable and makes better sense (than right in, right out access).”

Wally Costello, a con-sultant for Weyerhaeuser said, “After the agree-ment is signed by all par-ties, the next step is to reach out to the WSDOT and begin the applica-tion process.” Costello said that discussions about installing the light should happen within the next month.

Johnson believes the council is looking for-ward to the businesses that will open in the area, “which will bring value

to the citizens along with much needed reoccurring sales tax revenue to help fund parks, streets and sidewalks.”

“Hopefully this will help move our discussion regarding the parks plan for the WSU Forest for-ward,” he concluded.

the cravings make them give in when they have decided to quit, and quit-ting is impossible. Quitting for any reason besides your-self is futile to recovery.

Quitting can make you a better father, mother, son or daughter, brother or sister, and can make you whole again. Doing it alone is not helping your cause. Having the support of a therapist or group of people who are dealing with the same issues is so important to

staying sober. Think about it, would

you rather lose everything and everyone you love, include yourself in that list, or would you rather not be dependent on a substance that runs your life?

The Courier-Herald’s annual September Best of the Plateau

edition once again features the wide array of businesses and services found in the area.

From the best dining, shopping, healthcare or schools, the Best of the Plateau highlights the region and all the people.

An array of treasures can be found in the Best of the Plateau pages, some well known and some tucked away.

Along with the plethora of businesses and services available on the Plateau, there are activities for all ages to enjoy, often costing little more than gas for the car and snacks for the kids.

A good resource for the activities and entertain-ment are city websites. Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, Buckley and Sumner all list city activities and other events on their web-

sites along with a links to resources in the county and state.

In The PastHistorical societies are a

fun and educational way to discover the past and see the affect on the Plateau today.

• The Enumclaw Historical Museum is well organized and a treasure of information. The displays are interesting and well thought out.

• The Black Diamond Museum has one of the best coal mining displays found at any venue. The history of coal mining and Black Diamond is presented and there is more than mining. All aspects of the town are preserved.

• The White River Museum features the rich history of the logging industry.

• Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society is an excellent resource for his-tory of Bonney Lake and the surrounding area. The society has monthly meet-

ings at 7 p.m. on the last Monday of each month at the Public Works Center in Bonney Lake.

Bird WatchingThe Plateau is one of the

best bird watching areas in the state. Perching birds to bald eagles, falcons and red-tailed hawks are com-mon sights.

Cooper’s hawks are iden-tified by the bands on the breast. They are consider-able smaller than a red-tail, and very speedy.

The American kestrel with its slate blue back and rufus colored chest can be seen perched on telephone wires on many of the roads.

Ospreys can be found around the lakes from Black Diamond to Bonney Lake. Watching an osprey go after a fish is a sight.

The dairy farms across the Plateau are an excellent spot to bird watch. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a slow drive along the back roads. Your patience will be rewarded.

Mount RainierAs fall begins and the

end of warm weather nears, it is a very good time to take a trip to Sunrise. The drive to Sunrise off state Route 410 is breathtaking and there are shorts hikes just right for youngsters with Mount Rainier appearing to be within reach.

Other spots to both hike and enjoy the Cascade Range include Mowich Lake.

Mowich Lake is clean, clear and icy cold, fed by a glacier that clings to the mountain, astoundingly close. A hand-ful of trails offer hiking opportunities for all fitness levels, from those who need hours to cover a couple of well-maintained miles to those who challenge moun-tain goats when it comes to sure-footed scrambling abil-ity and endurance.

The truly ambitious out-door enthusiasts plant a tent in one of the campground’s 10 groomed sites where no fires are allowed but the vault toilets are clean.

Here are a few hiking

opportunities, as recom-mended by the national park’s website:

• Rain Forest Nature Trail (.3 miles): Starting across from the Carbon River Entrance Station, this short loop trail takes visi-tors through a fine example of a temperate rain forest.

• Chenuis Falls Trail (7.4 miles): 3.5 miles from the Carbon River Entrance, cross the Carbon River on the foot log and follow the forested trail to the falls. Use caution crossing the river. Check to make sure the foot log is not washed out before attempting this hike.

• Green Lake Trail (9.6 miles): Trail begins 3.3 miles east of Carbon River Entrance, along the Carbon River Road. Hike through dense forest to a beauti-ful mountain lake. Take a short side trip for a view of Ranger Falls.

• Carbon Glacier Trail (17 miles): From the Ipsut Creek trail head, hike along the glacier-fed Carbon River to view the termi-

nus of Carbon Glacier. Stay away from the terminus of the glacier Rocks fall and bounce off the glacier as the ice melts and could cause serious injuries.

• Tolmie Peak Trail (6.5 miles): Beginning from the north side of Mowich Lake, this hike passes the beauti-ful subalpine Eustice Lake on its way to the Tolmie Peak Lookout.

Sky StoneMore than 4-feet tall

and 12-feet wide, the Sky Stone is an ancient boulder that sits in the midst of a residential development in Bonney Lake.

According to an article written by Theresa De Lay in 2013, scientific investiga-tion found the stone was probably used by indige-nous Plateau dwellers as a tool to calculate astronomi-cal and seasonal changes.

For more information about Sky Stone contact the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society.

All subjects in the police blotter are presumed inno-cent until proven guilty in a court of law.

September 14Trespass: Officers responded to a state Route 410 store to the report of a possible theft.

Officers were informed that three male subjects took off in the store’s electric cart. Officers spoke with two of the male subjects and asked the one sitting on the cart what he was doing. He told officers he took the cart for a joy ride and had no inten-tion of stealing it. The store will not be pressing charges but the two subjects are tres-passed from all like stores for a year.

Shoplift: While in the park-ing lot of a Bonney Lake phar-

macy for a collision investiga-tion, officers were advised by dispatch of a shoplift that had just occurred at that pharma-cy. Officers spoke with the cashier and were told that the subject wanted to buy some chew and while he entered their birthdate into the reg-ister, the subject grabbed the chew and ran out of the store. At the time of this report, there was nothing further.

POLICE BLOTTER

minor cut near his eye-brow that Wolschleger said he obtained while on the ground.

Prior to be transported to the Pierce County Jail, he was taken to a near by hos-pital to make sure he had no other injuries, Wolschleger said.

Wolschleger credits the bank employees with doing “all the right things.”

He added, they were

“calm, cool, collected and followed protocol.”

Gookstetter has had previ-ous run ins with law enforce-ment but none in Bonney Lake, Wolschleger said.

It has been a while since Bonney Lake has had a “legit bank robbery,” he said.

He described ‘legit’ as one where a subject walks in, asks for money and leaves with some.

“We are happy how this one played out,” Wolschleger said. “We couldn’t have asked for it go any better.”

Gookstetter appeared in court Wednesday, Sept. 17 for his arraignment where he pleaded not guilty to robbery in the first degree.

Gookstetter was issued conditions of release Wednesday including post-ing $300,000 bail.

He also must stay at his residence in Enumclaw, keep in contact with his attorney and is not to operate a vehicle among other conditions.

At the time of press, he remains in custody at the Pierce County jail.
