When Jeff Tweedy and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and legend Mavis Staples sat down to talk about what they wanted the new Mavis Staples album to sound like, they both turned to the original spiritual roots of the Staples Singers as a backbone.  Both wanted to make a record about connection, about reaching out to someone through the power of music. What they achieved is possibly the album of Staples career, a warm, powerful and fervent collection of brilliantly chosen and interpreted songs. Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilco’s studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Backed by Mavis’ smoking touring band and featuring guest turns from Tweedy and Wilco’s Patrick Sansone, with background vocals by Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor, the album cradles Mavis’ exquisite voice, allowing her to stretch out emotionally on tracks like Randy Newman’s “Losing You” and the Creedence Clearwater chesnut “Wrote a Song For Everyone.”  The two songs Jeff wrote for Mavis also meld seamlessly into the vibe and theme of the album: “He would listen to my conversations, my words, and then feed off that… The songs he wrote take me places I wouldn’t normally go,” says Mavis.  Sure to be one of the best‐received releases of 2011, Mavis’ message of joy and redemption has found the setting it has always deserved.

For over fifty years, soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples has been a national treasure. As a solo artist in her own right she has helped to define much of what is righteous and soulful in American music. We’ll Never Turn Back is the most personal and polemical album of her career, and perhaps her greatest life work; produced by Ry Cooder, the visionary behind projects like Buena Vista Social Club, the album combines raw, emotional, contemporized versions of some of the freedom songs that provided the soundtrack to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, along with new originals written by Mavis and Ry. DVD OVERVIEW:

A true story of a priest (Andre Braugher) in New Orleans who formed a group of black players and challenged an all-white prep school basketball team in the 1960's. Eventually events like these signaled the pivotal turn in the games' history leading to the integration in today's sport. Directed by Steve James (Hoop Dreams), these basketball players didn't just make shots, they made history.

In this drama, set in New Orleans just as the civil rights movement was about to send shockwaves through society, Andre Braugher plays a priest from Baltimore is sent southward to teach at a Catholic high school for young African American men. Braugher's character, Father Verrett, is to teach history and stay out of trouble, but before long he's making problems by raising the consciousness of his students. Named as the school's basketball coach, Verrett succeeds in instilling pride in his team, especially when, in a scene fraught with tension, he drives the team bus to a "whites only" diner after a game and insists on being served. As the sports leagues in New Orleans are segregated, Verrett's team will never play the team from the all-white high school that is supposed to be the best in the city. But one of his energized players issues a challenge to the white team, and a real championship game ensues. This all may sound simplistically moralistic, but the film does provide a multilayered look at segregation, and especially at the tensions it created within families when the younger generation sought change. And though the plot's outcome may not be surprising, the film's strongest points are the fine performances, in particular Braugher as the idealistic priest. --Robert J. McNamara
