Live….Laugh…and LoveBy John McLeod

Live well dear friends In all you do,

Tho’ paths be old Or paths be new, But to yourself Be ever true, Live well!

Laugh often friends Tho’ passing years

Bring, sometimes, smiles And, sometimes, tears,

For mirth forever Warms and cheers

Laugh often!

Love much dear friends For love will bring

The healing joy And hope of Spring,

Where pain and fear may never dwell Nor anguish touch….

And so Live well, Laugh often too,

And more, dear friends, Love much!

An Inspirational Poem

Dear Family and Friends,

Thank you for your support of the Christopher Catanese Children’s Foundation. We created this Foundation as a way to celebrate the life and spirit of our son Christopher.

Our son was a charming young man who lived a beautiful life that was full of endless possibilities. He laughed often with everyone and was loved by all. Chris’s life was surrounded by magnifi cent family and friends who have always been there for us in our time of need. Although Christopher is no longer with us in presence, he is thought of and missed deeply every minute of every day.

This is our family’s fourth annual fundraiser. Each year, we are touched by the support and help we receive from family and friends to make this event happen. With the proceeds from our fundraisers the Foundation has been able to provide fi nancial assistance to individuals and organizations making a difference in the lives of many children.

In this program book, we have included an overview of those who have received funding from our Foundation with a spotlight on three of the organizations. Our annual recipients can be viewed on our website. As our Foundation matures, we hope to make an even bigger impact in the future of children’s lives.

We believe that our outreach is a way for us to celebrate and honor Christopher and his life in a positive, joyous way. Our goal is to help children in need to improve their lives, fulfi ll their hopes and dreams, and to make a better world for them. When we see Christopher again, we want him to be proud of the way all of us chose to revere his time on earth. We can never change yesterday, but we can make a difference today in the lives of needy children in Chris’s memory.

We are blessed to have supportive family and friends who have helped to make this fundraiser a success; without you this event would not be possible. We sincerely thank you for your participation and deeply appreciate your support, generosity, and love.

Sincerely,Peter II, MaryAnn, and Peter III

Franciscan Hospital for ChildrenAt Franciscan Hospital for Children, our mission is to provide compassionate care and education to children with special health care needs and to help them reach their full potential. This year The Christopher Catanese Children’s Foundation was a sponsor of the Adaptive Bicycle Summer Camp

launch at the Franciscan Hospital which allowed families to participate in the camp for free.

The Adaptive Bicycle Summer Camp program developed by physical therapists in the Research Center at Franciscan Hospital for Children introduces adaptive bicycles to children with special needs to give them the opportunity to ride! Twenty-four children, ages 4-19 years, participated in this intensive “Bike Camp” for three hours per day for one week. Children had a variety of disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Developmental Delay, and Down Syndrome.

Children learned to ride one of 13 bicycles that were adapted to fi t their unique needs. Physical and occupational therapists fi t each child with the proper bicycle and helmet and taught them the rules of the road and how to ride. A key feature of the Bike Camp is that campers learn a skill they can continue to use with family and friends. And by practicing these new “biking skills”, children are improving their fi tness and gross motor skills while participating in a fun sport. Families can rent adaptive bicycles through Massachusetts Park & Recreation programs, as well as other programs around the state.

Palin Rose Meyer FoundationOn February 28, 2011, Palin Rose Meyer was born, shortly after her birth she was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). She is the only child in St. Johns County, Florida with this very rare condition. Fortunately Palin began growth hormone therapy which is beginning to make a difference in her young life; however the struggles of sleep apnea, a feeding tube, hypotonia and the obvious severe fi nancial strain of an atypical newborn have made life

challenging since her birth for her family. Palin is in the “failure to thrive” stage of this syndrome, she and her family have a long road ahead of them before life becomes consistent and normal again.

It is estimated that PWS affects one in 12,000 to 15,000 births. This syndrome affects both males and females and all ethnic groups. Currently there is no cure to date, no medications or procedures are successful in staving off the relentless hunger. However, growth hormone has been effective in increasing height, improving body mass and metabolism, and boosting strength, energy and cognitive development. The Christopher Catanese Foundation provided support to this organization to help bring awareness to PWS and increase its

funding for research.
