Booker's early life• Booker Taliafro Washington was born April 5, 1856.

• His mother was Jane Furguson.

• He was one of the last generation of African Americans to be born into slavery.

• He was born on a small tobacco plantation in Franklin County.

• He and 6 other slaves (including his mother and siblings) lived and worked there.

• In the civil war slavery was ended and Booker got more rights.

• This let him be able to go to school even though he was not aloud by his father.

School life

• In 1872 at the age of about 16, Booker walked 500 miles to a school for "black men".

• He often took odd jobs to support himself on the way.

• When he was younger,and had to work in a coal mine. Whenever he got a chance,Booker would take out a book and read.

• When Booker was a slave,he would get up at 4:00 am. and study.

• Not very many slaves at his age were educated at all.

Later in life

• Booker went to Hampton Universty and Graduated the college in 1875

• Booker Taliafro Washington opened now known as Tuskegee University

• He sometimes taught his old grade school in Virginia

His death and legacy

• Booker T. Washington may have been the most celebrated African American in the world at that point of time.

• He died November 14,1915 at the age of 59.

• He was buried at Tuskegee University
