Washington was born a slave in Virginia. In 1881, he became the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. He then built a huge network of support in black communities, helping to raise money to establish more schools in small areas with higher education for blacks among the South. I think he became a great man to look up to during this time as it was one of the main issues that not many people were standing up to address.

In 1895, Booker T. Washington gave a speech in Georgia known as the “Atlanta Compromise.” He stated that African Americans should accept the segregation and everything else as long as whites would allow them economic success and justice in court. He was criticized for not fighting for equality, which is where Du Bois stepped in to demand it in every aspect of a person’s life. This would take amazing bravery that I can’t even imagine holding.

In 1901, Booker T. Washington was the first African American to be invited to the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt. He then became a president’s adviser involving racial matters because he offered the acceptant side of everything. This White House visit and later, the publication of his autobiography, Up From Slavery, brought his recognition into history. I believe this would give hope and reassurance to his African American supporters.

Booker T. Washington was a very complex person who lived during a touchy period of advancing in racial equality. In one way, he was promoting African Americans being okay with taking a back seat to whites, but in another way, he challenged segregation in various attempts. By 1913, his influence had died out and there was a new face for racial equality. I believe we should give this man credit for taking one of the first steps in advancing towards this goal which was ultimately conquered.
