morning Lord's supper and ladies gathering Tuesdays. There are not

    children

    enough fo r

    Sunday

school but a youth group is being planned on a

    regular basis.

    REKEMin

    1990 there

    were

about 90 members on a regular basis

    until

    the Lanaken group

was begun. One member moved away because of sickness so there are now

    about'28

    regulars. They

    have an active Sunday

    school

    and every two months

    they

    have a

    pot

    luck.

    They share

    the

    Christmas program every

    year, alternating in the Genk

    and

    Rekem

    buildings. There

    are

    also

maybe up to 20 who are irregular

    in

    attendance

    because

    of their

    health,

    work

    responsibalities,

    non-Christian

    partners

    and other

    c i r c u m s t a n c e s .

    MAASMECHELEN--in

1990-91 they had between 15-20 regular attenders plus about 9 children

    in

    their

Sunday school. There were about 5 immersions in these two years and

besides their Sunday morning Lord's supper they have

    Bible

    study on Wednesdays,

    prayer

    meeting

    on

    Thrusdays

    and

    evangelism at the market

    place on Saturday. They

    also

have a monthly pot luck and fellowship.

    LANAKENin 1990 they began

    with

    about 21 and thay've had 6 converts but some have l e f t

    to

    join with ano ther

    congregation. They

    are

esp ecia lly a ctiv e try in g to reach

    f ier ing

    up some

    luke

    vrethern of

    various

They continue as a home church

    with

    Monday

    THINKING

    BACK OVER 1992 , P au l s

    words

    in

    I I

    Cor. 1:8-11

    seemed to

    be a

    perfect description

    of

    the

year. We do no t want you

    to

    be

    uninformed,

    brothers, about t he hardships we endured in . . . .

    We

    were under great pressur

far beyond our ability to endure, so that we

    despaired

    even of l i fe . Indeed

    in

    our hearts

    we f e l t t he s en tenc e of death.

    Bu t

    th is happened

    tha t

    we

    might

    not

    rely

    on

    ourselves

    but

    on

    God,

    who raises

    the

    dead.

    He

    has

    de

    livered us from

    such

    a

    deadly peri l ,

    and he will

    deliver us. On

    him we

    have

    set our

    hope

    that

    he

will continue to deliver us, as

    you help us by

    your

prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor

    granted us

    in

    answer to the

    prayers

of many. Then looking back over a few

    other

    years reports, i t seemed a

    reoccuring

    theme was

    the

    hardship and su f

ferings we'd faced each year. The thought came of Jesus and

    that although

    he

    was

    a son, he

    learned

    obedience from what he

    suffered.

    (Heb.

    5:8) If

we too learned obedience as a result of a l l the suffering i t would

    be worth

    it ll

    In the

    last three

reports this year we've made mention

    of

    what seemed

    strange

    and

    coincidental

    contacts with many people

    of the

    drug-world.

    Again, looking

    back

    over

    past

reports i t was discovered to be a

    re

    occuring theme

    since

    1989

    It

    was as

    i f

    God

    was

    confronting

    us with a

    problem,

    planting

    an idea

    in

    our mind,

    conditioning

    us

    fo r His

    plans,

    trying

    to te l l

    us something When

    we

f irs t told of plans

    to leave

    Opglabbeek and move to Genk,

    i t

    was with uncertainty,

    NOT

    really

    KNOWING why,

    but

    we

    felt

    lead of

    Him

    and

    rested

    in the truth of

    Jere.

    28:11, For I

    know the

plans I have for you. ..plans

    to

    prosper

    you

and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope

    and

    a future.

    We didn t

    know

the plans. . the future, but

    they

    are

    b-e-g-i-n-n-i-n-g to become

    clear

    now.

    THE REACTION

    TO

    DRUG ADICT5 of

    most

    of the

    buisness

    people

    Henki's gotten

    to know the past^ .

    years

    in

    the Genk shopping centers

    is

    discriminatibn

    and rejection. They

    have forbidden many

of these drugs people on their

    premises

but told Henki he's welcome but

    not

    his companions.

Sometimes i t is understandable, as they hold up

    th,e

use of the toilets, ruin the reputation

    of the

    shop and

    the like.

    Yet,

    they are

    humans

    in need of

    food,^vyarmth

    and understanding--

    maybe

    more than

    the

    average person.

    Henki

    spends

    time

    talking

    with them, trying

    to

    give

    them

love and concern while influencing them to try another life-style, and has even been able to

    convince

    some

to go for treatement. All the while he's trying to better

    understand

    the

    general problem

    and

how best to apply Scirptures to their situations.

EVEN CHRISTIANS ARE USUALLY apprehensive or even repulsed by this strata of society.

    Much of

    this is probably

because of ignorance and,not realizing the scope of the

    ^,.4

    need

    and

    problem

and thinking i t s not in my

    world

    of existance but far

    away. Once

    it is

    discovered to be right in

    your own

    back yard you're

    forced with a decision.

    What

    you

    do

    about i t

    is

    the

    same

    as the various

reactions of the passers-by of the

    man

    going down from Jerusalem to

Jericho in Jesus' parable of Luke 11:30-35. W11|

    we

    pass

    by

    on the

other side or as the Samaritan take pity on them? Henki's

    been^

    having

    to think about this a

    lot

    lately. Admitedly for us at

    first, i t

    didn t

    soak

    through

    and we

didn't see the need or take the

    time,

    being so in

    volved with church

    work.

    But the

    more

    you

    come

    in contact with

    them

    the more

    i t

    soaks through

    Finally, as

    Henki

    explains, he

    began

    to realize

    they

    really

    need

    help and because of past

    experience

    in counseling

    within

the church he automatically began to

    search

    for the solution

to their struggle for their souls are valuable.

    Because

    of

    being

    moved

    with

    compassion

    we

    feel

    we

must minister to these people the best

    we can.

Maybe our^past 20 years with the

church-planting/nurturing situation was simply preperation for this step...

    IT

    MAY BE

    we

will loose friends, our reputation or

    even

    support because of our

    compassion

    and

    decision. Yet

    we

    know

    we

    are bound by love

    and

obedience to spread the word of

    God.

    This

    is

    for

    two

    impor tant reasons :

    1.

    It is

    living

    and

    active.

    Sharper

    than any

    double-edged sword, it

    penetrates even to

    dividing

    soul

    and spirit, joints

    and marrow; it judges

    the

    thoughts and

    attitudes of

    the

    heart. (Heb. 4:12) i. ^ i.

    -n

    2. So

    is

    my

    word

    that goes out from my

    mouth.

    It will not return to

    me empty,

    but will

    accomplish

    what

    I

    desire

    and achieve

    the

    purpose

    for which

    I

    sent

    it.

    (Is.

    55:11)

    V^on't

you join us to cast your bread upon the waters for after many days you will find

    it again.

    (Ecc. 11:1)?? We cannot

    but

    continue

    to

    follow

    His

    guidance

    in

    obedience,

    though

    we

    don't

    know

    the

    details of

    the

    purpose it

    will

    accomplish

    but

    pray

    that

    it

    be

    to

    the

    glory

    of

    His name and kingdom.
