Booth traffi c included coal execs and coal miners alike, different in rank, simi-lar in attitude as they were all quick to grab a “Support Coal” wristband in order to proudly display their support for an in-dustry that has been their livelihood. The overall consensus was apparent, “Now, more than ever, the coal industry needs everybody’s physical and heartfelt sup-port.”

The Coal People Magazine crew attend-ing were Editor/Publisher Al Skinner, Managing Editor Christina Karawan, Advertising Sales Associates Lisaand Chuck Roper, and Alan Terranova. Contributing Editor Art Sanda attend-ed the fi rst day representing CPM at the media breakfast along with Lisa, Chuck and Alan. Art also stayed busy interview-ing Keith Richardson of Joy Mining Ma-chinery. He also met with O.J. Gardnerof Gardner Paint to schedule a feature on the Mount Mission School. Freelance contributor and Bluefi eld native, Bill Archer, also at-tended. Bill wrote several articles for the CPM’s Sept. is-sue. Many booth visitors commented that they knew David

Cline of Rock ‘N Roll Coal, who was fea-tured on the cover.

Alan, Lisa and Chuck arrived on set-up day and took care of everything. Chuck stayed busy the entire show running box after box of magazines to the registra-tion tables. The September issues were going as fast as he could deliver. Lisa,

Chuck and Alan were in perpetual mo-tion as they visited booths and took pho-tos, only to return to the CPM booth to stock up on goods to give away. Chris-tina spent most of her time manning the booth while the others did the leg work.

It’s such a prideful feeling when people approach us with compliments and adu-lation. That extension makes us all feel as though our format is what the people want, and it’s working.

John Font with Generon stopped by to plan his annual advertising schedule with Lisa Roper. He met Lisa at the 2009 Coal Prep show and told her when he was ready to advertise, he would let her know. And that he did. John stopped by several times missing the very busy Lisa by minutes. He fi nally caught up with her and Lisa was able to help coordinate his advertising and added values for the re-mainder of the year and 2010. Great to have you with us John!

Alan spoke with Matt Simmons of the Simmons Equipment of Pounding Mill, VA, at length. Matt has been carrying on the popular “Simmons” name in the

industry. In the early years of CPM, we worked with Bernard Simmons, and that company was the very fi rst national company to advertise in CPM all those years ago. It carried on for years through Blackwell Associates of Abingdon, VA.

Lisa and Christina stopped by the Phillips booth to say hello. Great to see the al-ways smiling Jim Phillips who reported that business is good. The overall feeling of the group was very positive. Congratulations to Kelly Crile of Millennium Torque & Ten-sioning, Inc., for winning the Casino Night auction bid for a full page full color in CPM.

Curtis Roberts has been working with Pemco since way back when the Indiana show featured exhibitors – Curtis asked Lisa to fi nd out if Al has caught any fi sh with that fi sh-ing rod. Al and Curtis traded door prizes at one of the Indiana shows...Al traded his golf balls for a fi shing rod. And yes, he has caught many fi sh!

The last day of the show Lisa and Chuck arrived at the booth a few minutes early. A man stopped by and reached in the candy jar to grab a couple of tootsie rolls. Lisa turned her back momentarily to put something away then looked up to see that this man took the entire candy jar fi lled with tootsie rolls and bolted. In an instant he was gone. Lisa just chuck-led, typical Lisa. It would take a lot to upset the easy-going southern girl who always has a smile on her face.

the Sept. issue. (page 92-93) Shortly after the magazine was in circulation, a call came in from Franklin Spence of Mar Mac Aggregates, LLC in Goldsboro NC.: “I read the article by Lee Osborne Thank God I’m a Technocrat. I just want to tell you how much I appreciated that article, I read it two or three times and Mr. Osborne is right on target with his article, and it’s a shame that our leaders in Washington don’t have the same wisdom that Mr. Osborne does. He sure hit the nail right on the head. I appreciate the article, I appreciate you folks publishing it. I agree with Mr. Osborne 100 percent.”

ping by the elaborate Fairchild Interna-tional booth. The booth was buzzing and representatives were busy introduc-ing the 35C-WHPD Workhorse Permis-sible Diesel Scoop to visitors.

Gov. Joe Manchin’s helicopter landed and he was immediately surrounded by industry professionals at every level anx-ious to say hello and shake his hand. Gov. Manchin maintains a high-accep-tance rate in the state of West Virginia. His compassion for the state and its peo-ple is evident.

Show Chairman Charles A. Peters ac-companied Gov. Manchin on a tour of the show. “I’ve never seen a coal show this big,” the governor commented.

As he made his way through the tented area accompanied by Charlie, photog-raphers, and assistants, Christina had a chance to tell him that Al Skinner was at

the Coal People booth. His face lit up as he headed toward Al with an extended arm. Gov. Manchin and Al go way back. Additionally, Al did a lot of work with A. James Manchin when he fi rst ran for Sec. of State.

He stayed and chatted for a while, took a call, and returned to continue catching up with Al. As busy as he is, he never seems in a hurry to move on. He is gra-cious and classy. West Virginia and the coal industry are lucky to have him.

Jim McMahon of Frontier-Kemper stopped by to meet us in person and thank us again for the feature we pub-lished in June highlighting the completion of their fi rst blind-drilled shaft. It was the largest single-pass hole ever drilled in North America and was quite an achievement for the group. He reported to have received a lot of positive feedback from the article. Keep up the good work and thank you for al-lowing CPM to spread the good news.

Mike Hastings with the Car-roll Group invited Christina and Art Sanda to his booth where Delta Electric and Carroll Engineering were introducing the new service product, Power Factor Cor-rection. The service evalu-ates existing electric bills and penalties utilizing soft-ware programs and analay-sis to minimize the increase in electric bills. This service will enable coal companies to add the savings to their profi t margin. Very impressive!

Lisa and Chuck had a wonderful lunch courtesy of Larry Zande of Blizzard In-dustrial Supply. Blizzard had a unique booth that was located outside. Rather than a tent, their booth was created with one of their products. The fabrication di-vision manufactures metal overcasts for mines. They added stairs and a handrail around the top of one of the overcasts to create a second fl oor that came complete with tropical decorations and great food.

ried well into the Bluefi eld Coal Show. Jack Fink of Plymouth Rubber so clever-ly made arrangements for his associates to sport name tags with female names.

We are not sure if it worked, but it cre-ated a lot of laughs. We had the plea-sure of working with Sergio Pin-eiro of Plymouth Rubber on the de-velopment of his full page ad in the Sept. issue. Alan Terranova has been working with

Sergio on his advertising schedule and they are anxious to start advertising and running articles. They were showcasing the long awaited GLF2 Jacket Repair Wrap.

Alan and Christina followed their noses to savor some great grilled food at the Setco/RM Wilson booth. The grilled pork chops and peppers were delicious. Bob Gillispie, truly in his glory, sat and chat-ted for a bit. Bob said that when he was checking in at registration, some folks commented that they saw SETCO and RM Wilson’s article in Coal People’s Sep-tember issue and will be by to get some food. The article featured an invitation for showgoers to come and enjoy grilled food and drinks.

Steve Mercer wrapped up a plate of stuffed peppers for Alan and Christina to take to Al Skinner. He wanted to make sure Al got his share because they were going fast! Bobby’s mother spent a lot of time making her special stuffed peppers. Bobby said that she wanted to know if 95 would be enough. He laughed and told her 500 wouldn’t be enough. But, it would have to be fi rst come fi rst served on the

delicious treat. Now we know where Bob-by G. gets his cooking talent. We’re talk-ing “major league” good.

The following day, Al and Alan visited Bill Grisanti (left) of FLEXCO who was ec-static over his picture on the CPM Show Supplement cover. He couldn’t thank us enough. What a good feeling.

After talking with Bill, the two of them gravitated toward nearby Bob Gillespieand Steve Mercer to thank them for the food they sent over the day before. Bob and Steve insisted they again partake in the grilled delights. After a weak “no thanks” the two gave in and just had to have a grilled sausage, all brown and grill striped… too much temptation. And was it ever good. This booth is a show high-light!

Now stuffed like the sausage just eaten, Al and Alan continued on with visits, stop-
