The advent of God’s coming with its promise of fulfilment happens within world history. The first reading locates God’s act of restoration in the city of Jerusalem. The gospel situates the ministry of John within a particular period of world histo-ry. They point us to historical experience as the place and the time of restora-tion, of incarnation, of redemption. They show us that God works within every-day life, in conventional places, during regular time. In fact, from a human point of view, the extraordinary events of salvation took place within what was quite ordinary.

John proclaims the kind of transformation that results in a change of heart. Re-versals characterise such transformation: the robe of mourning is replaced by the splendour of glory; tears are turned into rejoicing; those led away by ene-mies are brought back by God; valleys are filled, mountains are levelled, winding roads are made straight; even nature offers itself as shelter for the people of God. Those who are shamed and discarded are made glorious; those who suffer are comforted; the oppressed are freed; all of life’s obstacles are removed; the way to God is made straight; the natural world enjoys peace and harmony.

The transformation or repentance of heart takes place within human life, within relationships of justice between people and with the earth, in right living, in gen-uine unselfish love. It produces the fruits of righteousness of which Paul speaks. Advent is the time to prepare ourselves for this. © Dianne Bergant CSS

SAVIOUR - ADVENT & CHRISTMAS DAILY REFLECTIONS

This year’s reflection book, Saviour, provides an opportunity for us to be still each day, listen to God and hear him declare to us as the angel declared to the shepherds: “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ The Lord” (Luke 2:11). Saviour is a 76 page pocket-size book con-taining short-spiritually rich-daily reflections. Copies are now available in the Church at a cost of $4.00 each. Please place money in envelopes provided.

Come to the Craft Stall in the Parish Centre on Sunday 16th December [after 9am Mass] to raise funds for the Aussie Farmers.

Dear Lord, please help us to be kind and forgive generously. Moses (Ten Commandments) - Deut 5:1-22. We remember that Moses was given the Ten Com-mandments on the top of Mt Sinai. Loving God, thank you for giving us rules to guide us and keep us safe. Ruth (Wheat) - 1:1-22. We remember Ruth, the great –grandmother of David, who was faithful to Naomi. Lord, thank you for taking care of us and help us to be loyal and kind like Ruth Samuel (Oil lamp) - 1 Sam 3:1-10. We remember that Samuel answered your call and trusted in your plan. We thank you God that you have a plan for each of us. Help us to trust you. Abraham (Mountain & dagger) - Gen 12: 1-7 We remember that you are the God of Abraham. Lord, help us to obey you, even when we can’t see Your great plan. David (2 symbols - Sling shot & sheep & crown) - 1 Sam16:13 & 2 Sam 5:1-3. We remember David who was the Great King of Isra-el. CHOIR PRACTICE FOR ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS this Monday 10th December at 7.00pm

ANNUAL SPECIAL MASS

FOR THE FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS Rosary 6.30pm and Mass 7.00pm Friday 28 December 2018. St Francis Xavier Church - 6 Church St, Goodna. Celebrant Father Tuong. Arranged by the Knights of the Southern Cross. Especial-ly pertinent due to the horrendous abortion laws in Qld.

CHRISTMAS CARDS are available in the foyer of the Church. Cards - pack of 8 for $3.00, Columban Calendars $9.00. Please make payments via the Poor Box. Thank you for your support.

“And this is my prayer: that your love may in-crease ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value…” PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10 Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need.

Second Sunday of Advent - C A VOCATION VIEW: Today, God’s Voice ring out “Go, prepare the way for the Lord”. Is this call for you? Time for a Smile - Three Frugal Men The Three Wise Men sound very generous, but what you’ve got to remember is that those gifts were joint Christmas and birth-day presents.
