Front cover: (left to right) Dog walkers Lauren, Liam and Esther regularly enjoy the park with their dogs Ruby and Jade.

It may come as no surprise to residents that ‘Your parks and green spaces’ ranked as one of the highest of the seven priority themes when we went out and asked the community “What’s important to you in Boroondara?” as part of the development of our Boroondara community plan.

When thinking about the future of parks and green spaces we need to consider a hotter and drier climate and the need to use water more efficiently. The increasing cost of land in urban areas limiting opportunities to buy new land for public open space, and a growing awareness of the importance of nature play opportunities that encourage children to learn about the natural world.

I thought it was interesting to reflect on Council’s role in relation to parks and green spaces as we plan the future of our great community and allocate our resources for future budgets. Let me share this with you.

• We provide and look after playgrounds and other park infrastructure like seats, toilets, BBQs, drinking fountains and walking trails.

• We work with the community and ‘Friends of’ groups to promote and maintain our parks and gardens.

• We have a local planning policy that requires developers to contribute to the provision of public open space.

• We plan for, provide and maintain a range of parks, gardens and green spaces. Some examples are the Maranoa Gardens in Balwyn, Central Gardens in Hawthorn and Hays Paddock in Kew East.

• We manage competing uses of our open spaces. For examples, this may be for unstructured and structured recreation or for pets and people enjoying our beautiful outdoor areas.

Message from the Mayor

With best wishes,

Councillor Phillip Healey, Mayor of Boroondara

The role of a carer is both a rewarding and challenging one. Whether personally caring for a loved one, a friend or a neighbour, the work is as unique as it is vital to the wellbeing of others.

If you have someone in your care and are eligible, support services may be available to you. Council is a provider of services under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme for people over the age of 65 and these include:

• Respite care - allowing carers to take a break from their role

• Personal care - assistance to free the carer to focus on other care needs

• Domestic assistance - supporting the caring relationship and allowing the carer more time to care for their loved one

You can also take part in Pathway for Carers, a social walk where carers can meet new people and learn about local initiatives. A Boroondara walk is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month in Ashburton. Visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/whats-on for more details.

For more information: • Carer Gateway is a national online and phone service that provides practical information and resources to support carers to help carers locate their nearest existing support services and they be contacted on 1800 422 737 or www.carergateway.gov.au .

Nestled away in the sleepy backstreets of Balwyn is a native wonderland unknown to many in our City.

Maranoa Gardens is one of the few strictly native Botanic Gardens in Australia, with an astonishing 3,500 different species in its lush surrounds, and new species being added all of the time.

The 2.6 hectare gardens were privately owned until the City of Camberwell purchased them in 1920, planting Australian natives while gradually removing the foreign plants.

Opening to the public in September 1926, Maranoa Gardens attracted the interest of early pioneers in Australian plants like Charles French, Ernest Lord, Arthur Swaby, Ivo Hammet and Frederick Chapman.

Today, it is one of the oldest native gardens in Australia, with one of the largest and most impressive displays of native plants.

With a central lawn shaded by beautiful canopy trees, Maranoa Gardens is an idyllic picnic spot and visitors are completely oblivious to the fact they’re only 12 kilometres from the CBD.

For a greater insight into these unique gardens, come along to an open day between 10am to 5pm, Sunday 28 May 2017.

There will be a Walk and Talk around the gardens and a BBQ lunch.

Our City’s beautiful parks and green spacesOne of the reasons people love living in Boroondara is our beautiful parks, gardens and open spaces. There are plenty of places for relaxing with family, friends and pets, like Canterbury and Alexandra gardens, Hays Paddock or Markham Victory Reserve. There are also many green spaces for casual and organised recreational activities. We all love using parks and green spaces for different reasons.

On the corner of Broadway and Stanhope Grove, and only five minutes walk from Camberwell Station, this Victorian-style garden features extensive open space, a perennial garden border and playground. The garden contains significant specimen trees, including oaks, elms and cedars.

To find out more about our parks and green spaces,  visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/parks-gardens .

The White Karee (Searsia pendulina) in Riversdale Park is considered rare in cultivation in Victoria and the only other known specimen is in the Portland Botanic Gardens. The tree is more than 100 years old and a significant gem in the middle of suburbia.

On any given Saturday or Sunday, tens of thousands of local people get involved in all sorts of recreational pursuits.

The casual use of ovals, walking trails, and playgrounds is very popular, as is organised sport. Sport and recreation are central to maintaining and improving health and wellbeing.

The local participation rate for people aged 15 years and over is 91 per cent compared with the same age cohort across Australia at 60.2 per cent and Victoria at 60.9 per cent.

The provision of parks and green spaces encourage people to be outside, exercise, and allow opportunities for community connection.

Brothers Richard and Andrew Hummerston (pictured below, left) have been playing footy locally since they were kids living in Surrey Hills playing for the Canterbury Cobras Junior Football Club.

Now 29 and 24 and still living locally, they play for the seniors at Canterbury, in Division Three of the Victorian Amateur Football Association, and play and train at Canterbury Sportsground in the backstreets of Surrey Hills.

First established in 1881, Canterbury Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in Australia and was first based at a sportsground between Canterbury Station and Wattle Valley Road, where the popular Maling Road shopping strip is now situated.

On Sunday 18 June 2017, local people can talk to a range of sustainability experts at an innovative event in Camberwell.

At Speed Date a Sustainability Expert you can get free advice and tips from leading green architects and experts on energy efficiency, renewables, green roofs and more.

We talk to one of these experts, Michael Tanner, about his sustainable landscape design business.

What makes your landscape designs sustainable? Understanding the site is the key to making a sustainable garden. That means seeing it from two positions – up close and personal and from a bird’s-eye; where the landscape or garden fits into its broader local ecology.

Are there practices you adopt that make your business sustainable? As a bee-keeper, I give consideration to how my plant selections provides forage for bees and other pollinators over the full year, not just the typical floristic seasons of spring and summer.

When you are asked to design a private garden, what is the first thing you talk about with a client? We talk about what they love about gardens, what they need and dream of. The role of any designer is to find the solutions the client often can’t fully articulate.

What advice will you share in June? Sustainability can be a very abstract process; there’s a lot we need to explore within our own heads before we get to the stage of turning soil and putting in plants. A speed date is a good start for thinking more sustainably about design.

To book a 15-minute spot with Michael or one of the 19 other experts, and to find out more, visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/upcoming-workshops .

In recent months we have received many reports of dodgy tree removal contractors pressuring people into removing trees.

These contractors are misleading residents by claiming trees are dangerous and permits aren’t required to do the job.

Dodgy tree loppers are often uninsured and their work practice is questionable. Unsolicited offers of tree removal should therefore be avoided.

A permit is always needed to remove canopy trees on private property - native and non-native. So please check with us before you chop the tree.

For more information, call 9278 4888 or visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/treepermits .

If you feel uncomfortable when someone door knocks and they are unable to produce a permit, avoid interaction and report the incident to: the local police, or the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on 1300 795 995 or lodge your concern via SCAMwatch (www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam).

Avoid tree scammers

Balwyn Evergreen Centre

When was your group established? Evergreen was established almost 60 years ago. This makes us one of the oldest seniors clubs in Boroondara. We have certainly evolved and flourished since we began in the 50s. What’s the purpose of the group? The group is all about providing seniors with services and programs that promote independence, wellbeing and healthy ageing. What activities does the group do? We provide lots of different activities ranging from exercise classes, outings, lunches and social meetings. We also run arts, crafts, card games and even podiatry sessions.Evergreen also has a fantastic program called CAVS (Companion Animal Volunteers Service) where we match volunteers with our members so they can get help walking and caring for their pets. Many of our members also love the convenience of our small fleet of buses to pick-up and drop them off for activities. What is the typical age range of members? Most of our members are 70 plus. What are the session and membership cost/s? An annual membership is $35. This entitles members to cheaper exercise classes on the second visit, with the third visit free and discounts on podiatry, craft, fashion and fabric as well as the walking and OMNI (Older Men New Ideas) groups.A cheaper package applies for members on a Wednesday for lunch and a concert. What: Balwyn Evergreen Centre Where: 45 Talbot Avenue, Balwyn When: Monday to Friday (check the website for specific session times)For more information call 9836 9681 or visit www.balwynevergreen.org.au .

The Boroondara Writers’ Group

Can you tell me a bit about your group? The Boroondara Writers’ Group began as a family history workshop. It was first facilitated by successive Hawthorn Writers-in-Residence. Since 2002 the group has been an independent, self-funded community group welcoming writers of all skill levels working in any genre. What’s the purpose of the group? We offer critique workshops where members can share their work for acclaim and critique to understand what is working and where they might consider changes. Members receive written critiques to take home as well as commentary on the day. We can also help guide members to publication. What kinds of things can members expect to enjoy? We have skills development seminars with guest presenters like P D Martin, Anne Gracie, Rachel Matthews, Sue Braint and Sue Gunningham. We also have book launches, special events like public readings celebrating Family History Week and a monthly newsletter about opportunities for writers and tips for improving writing. What is the cost of joining the group? There is a $5 joining fee. Annual subscription is $40 and this covers refreshments and the publication of our biennial members’ anthology. Casual attendance is $10 (recoverable with membership). What: Boroondara Writers’ Group Where: Meeting Room 1, Hawthorn Community Precinct, 584 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn. Balwyn Library is now fully operational at its temporary home at the former Balwyn Leisure Centre, and work is progressing on the $8.5 million redevelopment of the permanent site.

This popular service will remain at 230 Balwyn Road, Balwyn North until early 2018 while the permanent library on Whitehorse Road is transformed into a contemporary facility with appealing spaces to meet, read and study.

The temporary site has good parking, the same opening hours as the permanent site, up to 90 per cent of the collection available (including reservation pick up), Wi-Fi access and public computers.

For more information, visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/balwyn-library-redevelopment project webpage or contact Boroondara Library Service on 9278 4666.

Until 25 May 2017, our draft Council Plan 2017-21, including our Strategic Resource Plan 2017-21, is open for public comment. This sets out the priorities to guide the Council over the four years of its term in office, and is informed by community input on the many actions and strategies approved by Council.

Our Council Plan 2017-21 will be significantly reviewed in the coming year, following the release of our 10-year Boroondara community plan, which has been developed with extensive input from the community.

The proposed Rating Strategy 2017-21 is also open for comment, along with the proposed Budget 2017-18 which outlines the services and initiatives to be funded for the coming financial year.

Copies are available at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au, can be requested by emailing [email protected] or at any of our libraries or customer service centres. Submissions can be made via our website www.boroondara.vic.gov.au, by emailing [email protected] or by post to Private Bag 1, Camberwell VIC 3124.

In March, the first sod was turned on the $17.2 million North East Community Hub project. The Honourable Josh Frydenberg MP, joined Cr Phillip Healey Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Jim Parke, Cr Cynthia Watson, community members and Greythorn traders at the event.

The Australian Government has provided a $3.2 million grant towards the project construction, through the National Stronger Regions Fund, and the North Balwyn RSL sub-branch has

generously provided the land to Council on a long-term lease.

When it opens midway through 2018, the hub will have a range of features including a neighbourhood house, community meeting spaces, a library lounge, an integrated childcare centre, a maternal and child health centre, allied health and counselling services and the North Balwyn RSL.
