02 | DECEMBER 2016 - JANUARY 2017

We are one of a handful of councils which has control over the removal of significant trees and canopy trees on private property in our municipality, after Council approved a new Tree Protection Local Law in August.

Significant trees are listed on Council’s website, while canopy trees are those over the minimum size specified in the Local Law.

Sometimes, a tree may need to be removed. This could be due to the poor health of the tree

or because the tree poses an unacceptable safety risk. The new Tree Local Law provides a balanced approach between the need to protect healthy trees and providing flexibility to residents who need to remove canopy trees within their property.

The new local law, which replaces an earlier version, includes tougher enforcement capabilities. This includes additional offences and improvement in the replacement planting requirements.

Boroondara has a new Tree Protection Local Law - an important mechanism to maintain our treasured significant and canopy trees.

We have a great City with a proud and engaged community who rate safety highly. Our sense of safety has been affected in recent times with the hoon driving and tack throwing in the Kew Boulevard, increased motor vehicle theft and the constant appearance of graffiti.

It’s terrific to hear from Boroondara’s Inspector Steve Noy that local police and a rejuvenated Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch are rallying the community to promote the great partnership that can help keep our City safe.

As the Christmas and New Year break unfold let’s keep each other in mind. People are preparing for their annual street parties, making arrangements to check mail and look after pets for those going away and checking-in on our elderly neighbours. It does make a difference.

This Council wants your voice in the 10-year community plan. This will guide our services, facilities and future budgets for 2017-27.

Over the coming months there will be many opportunities for you to tell Council what is important to you, your family and your neighbourhood. In March we will present our findings back to you and ask those interested to rank priorities. Find out more by visiting www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/ourcommunity .

Bring a friend, visitor or the family and enjoy your local shopping centre, as there are plenty of Christmas decorations and installations on show.

After dusk the Hawthorn Arts Centre will be illuminated and the civic square will feature a light display. Don’t miss the multi-faceted jewel decorations placed in the civic square. They are made up of panels that offer a semi-translucent display during the day, and light up at night.

If in Kew visit the Kew Court House which features an animated Australian Christmas light projection on the building facade from dusk.

Outside the Camberwell Library, the civic space features a giant interactive storybook A Boroondara Christmas Story. Enjoy the magic of Christmas through this tale of adventure that has been specially written and crafted for Boroondara.

Prepare for fire hazards Access your Council anywhere anytime

Notice long grass, firewood, cuttings, dry branches and rubbish piling up around your house? These are all significant fire hazards that need to be removed.

When we asked you what services you would like more of the feedback was clear - a better website with the opportunity to do more online.

The risk of fires starting and spreading to neighbouring properties is greatly decreased when properties are well-maintained. Landlords are jointly responsible with their tenant to maintain rented properties.

Tips to reduce fire hazard:• mow your lawns regularly to keep grass height at less than 150mm• store building materials and firewood neatly, away from your home and fence line, and• remove all dead foliage and undergrowth from outdoor areas.

Residents are required by law to keep property free of fire hazards.

Council investigates reports of possible fire hazards and conducts an annual inspection of undeveloped land and properties that are considered a risk.

For information about preparing your property for the fire season visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/fire . For enquiries regarding fire hazard infringements contact Local Laws on 9278 4949.

So recently we’ve been busy building new eForms on the City of Boroondara website to provide just that—a more convenient way to access Council services whenever, or wherever you need them.

In the coming months we’ll be working to update our website. You can look forward to an optimised mobile browsing experience and desktop. This is a project we’re rolling out in consultation with the community, so rest assured our new website will serve our residents and businesses.

Our mail, in-person, and telephone services will still remain available to you.

To access all our current online services visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au or call Simon Smithson on 9278 4244.

Dancing for grownups

When asked why Kate Stanford founded dance sessions for grownups, she responded, “why should the kids have all the fun?”.DanceRetro is a casual, informal and social dance session run by qualified, experienced and fun-loving teacher, Kate. She stresses that anyone who loves dancing to retro pop music is more than welcome to come along and dance for the health of it!“When I go to the other side of 50 I thought people our age seem to only dance at weddings and birthdays now. When the old school music plays, the dance floor is full - other than that, people just don’t dance.” Inspired by this thought, Kate created DanceRetro. The sessions include half, step by step dance lessons, and half, free dancing. Comfy shoes are best, but as Kate has said, some people are used to dancing in Elton John type platforms so anything you’re comfortable in is fine. Come alone or bring a friend. What: informal, social dancing to old school music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. When: 6.30pm to 7.30pm, Tuesdays.Where: the Exclusive Beats Boutique Dance Studio, 192 Canterbury Road, Canterbury. Cost: $10 at the door For more information call Kate 0417 545 024 or visit www.danceretro.com .

Christmas Lunch at Habitat Uniting Church, Kew

There’s at least one place you can go this Christmas where an instant family awaits. Habitat Uniting Church Kew will again be putting on a free Christmas lunch, where everyone is invited to share a yarn and a feast.

“It’s for whoever doesn’t have others to share Christmas Day with. Come sit with us, have a chat and a really nice feed,” said organiser, Rev. Natalie Dixon-Monu.

Thanks to the efforts of local fundraisers the meal is extra special, complete with formal table settings laid out by Rotary Club members.

“My whole family come down and that’s our Christmas lunch. It’s not about indulgence and consumerism; it’s about community,” explains Natalie. “I love it. I just wouldn’t do Christmas any other way.”

If you’d like to spend a warm and pressure-free Christmas with like-minded community members, please book yourself a seat. If you can lend a hand with food prep, offer good company or other support, contact Natalie on the number below.

When: doors open 11:30am, 25 December 2016.

Where: Habitat Uniting Church, 23 Highbury Grove, Kew.

For more information call Natalie on 0409 019 269 by 22 December 2016.

More than just lunch.

BusyFeet dance class

Despite Ciska Colussi living on the other side of the city, every week she makes a three hour round trip to Hawthorn to volunteer as a dance instructor for BusyFeet Boroondara. She is part of a similarly devoted band of volunteers who dedicate their time to ensure the Canterbury and Camberwell Rotary supported program “finds its feet” in the local area.Co-program leader, Jenni Nankevis says that the dance program is designed for children and teens with a disability and so each student is shadowed by their own volunteer to guide them step by step through each class. “If it takes a child six months to learn a dance step then so be it. The idea is that children can learn at their own pace,” said Jenni.“Siblings are also welcome to come along and use the facilities at Council’s Youth Services Centre to do their homework and parents can share a coffee and have that much needed respite.”What: BusyFeet Boroondara are a free, after school dance class for children with disabilities aged six to 16. When: Wednesdays, 4.30pm (except for school holidays). Where: Youth Services Centre, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn. For more information contact Jenni Nankervis 0407 334 107, email [email protected] or visit www.busyfeet.org.au .

Help with pool compliance

Going on holidays? What about Fido?

Swimming pools and spas are popular in Boroondara but they do pose significant dangers to young children if the safety barrier is non-compliant.

Dogs are social creatures and can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone. This may lead to excessive barking which can lead to a breach of the law.

Council investigates complaints and conducts proactive and random inspections of pools and spas throughout Boroondara. In most cases, non-compliant barriers are found due to a lack of maintenance over many years.

Property owners have a legal responsibility to ensure safety barriers are compliant. Requirements vary depending on when the pool or spa was constructed. For more information visit vba.vic.gov.au/consumer-resources/building/pages/swimming-pools or contact Council’s Building Services on 9278 4999.

Council also offers a user pay service to ensure safety barriers comply with the legal requirements. To request an inspection, visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/pools .

You can reduce your dog’s distress by maintaining their usual care and routine. Consider organising a pet-sitter or booking a doggy day-care. It’s also a good idea to check that your fence is secured to prevent injuries and escapee pets.

Barking can significantly impact others and dog owners are ultimately responsible for preventing this nuisance behaviour impacting on neighbours. For more information visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/residents/animals/dogs-cats or call 9278 4444.

The signs let visitors better understand the importance of these sites to promote nature conservation within Boroondara.

They feature a mix of stories and interesting facts about local native animals, plants and the landscape, and new “totem” signs show common birds for easy identification.

Did you know that eastern-long necked turtles like to hang out on the Freeway Golf Course’s sixth fairway?

Golfers often see the turtles basking on nearby rocks or making their way across the fairway during the breeding season.

In conjunction with this project, another two signs have been installed at Koonung Creek and Willsmere Billabong on managing off-leash dogs near sensitive biodiversity sites like wetlands.

The new signs provide recommendations on keeping dogs safe and protecting the natural values of these special environments.

Have you visited Hays Paddock, Burke Road South Wetlands or Freeway Golf Course lately? If so, you might have seen our new interpretive signs.

New signs highlight nature’s stories

For more information on the new interpretive signs, contact Andrea Lomdahl, Environment and Sustainable Living on 9278 4011 or visit our biodiversity web page www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/biodiversity .
