I must first tell you what a wonderful time forty-five Temple members and their friends had on our recent Fall Jewish cultural Trip to Manhattan and a visit to the only Greek Jewish synagogue in the Americas. It was a most beautiful day weather wise; perfect for walking in the city. To say we ate well is an understatement. We had knishes at Yonah Shimmel's, a Greek lunch at the synagogue, bialys at a bakery off of Essex Street, and kosher pickles at Pickle Man (Gus' moved to Cedarhurst, Long Island). I hope you will join us for our
next tour which will probably be in the spring.
Our Jewish calendar certainly presents challenges to us and this year in particular. When Chanukah is as early in December as it is this year, the challenges for Jewish families are very great as all of us can hear our children saying, come December 25th, "Mom, Dad, I want to celebrate Christmas and get presents like my friends in school!" After the parent responds, "but we had our Chanukah celebration a few weeks ago", you probably can hear your child answering, "We did! Oops, I forgot!". You can then only shake your head and throw up your arms in frustration. This will only get worse in 2013, when the first day of Chanukah is on Thanksgiving Day itself, November 28th. Oy!
In truth, there is no way that a Jewish family can compete with Christmas, regardless when Chanukah falls on the calendar. We live in a Christian country and the Christmas "Spirit", which is now viewed as an economic barometer measuring the financial stability or instability of the nation, is overwhelming. I am writing this message on October 27th, and just yesterday, while in a local retail store, I heard Christmas music through the store's audio system. Ugh!
To help this situation I would make the following two suggestions:
1) Make your Chanukah observance, whenever it occurs on the calendar - be it Nov. 28th or Dec. 25th, a very special and meaningful celebration. This celebration should include home decorations, lighting the Menorah every night, coming to Temple Chanukah events, eating latkes and jelly donuts, attending public Menorah lightings, and yes, sharing presents (which by the way is not a part of the traditional observance). It is important to emphasize the true miracle

About our Services Our Friday night worship is conducted in English and Hebrew. Services are every Friday evening. Our Shabbat Services are the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Fridays at 8:00 pm. We have a Family Service geared toward school age children the 2nd Friday of each month at 7:15 pm. The Rabbi will offer Birthday and Anniversary Blessings for the month at this service. We also have a Children’s Service geared toward pre-school children the 3rd Friday of each month at 7:00 pm. Please come and join us.

of Chanukah which was the victory of a small band of Jewish warriors over the mightiest army in the world at that time in order to secure their freedom of worship.
2) During a holiday season such as this one, when Christmas occurs it is an opportunity to teach your children that they can enjoy the celebrations of others without making the celebrations of others their own. While it is every child's fantasy, when attending someone else's birthday party, that he or she receives presents in addition to the birthday child, every child knows this is not going to happen. This knowledge should not detract from that child's enjoyment of his/her friend's birthday. The same with this holiday season. Both children and adults should be able to appreciate and enjoy the celebrations of others without making them their own. This is a good life lesson for you to teach your child and for your child to learn.
Again, Judy and I pray that you have a wonderful and enjoyable Chanukah celebration. Please join us for all our Temple and community events.

Earlier this year, B’nai Israel was invited to join a growing number of Temples in our area in a coalition called the Central Suffolk Jewish Alliance (CSJA). The stated mis-sion of CSJA is to coordinate, strengthen and enhance the Jewish community in Suffolk County. You may recall a quarter page ad in Newsday that appeared several times last summer, inviting unaffiliated Jews to visit our member Congregations for the High Holy Days. The cost of that ad was shared by eleven Temples, thereby making it affordable to all.
Following an all day event sponsored jointly by the CSJA and UJA, Jewish Week ran a front page article about the event, about CSJA, and about the plight of the Jewish community in Suffolk County today. Rabbi Moss, quoted in the article, makes reference to membership and finan-cial problems that face all of us with the declining affilia-tion of Suffolk’s Jews. The article is of interest and rele-vant to us at B’nai Israel. It can be accessed via a link on the home page of our web site, www.bnai-israel.org.
On a related financial note, first in a letter and then face to face in a Kol Nidre Appeal, I outlined to the Congrega-tion how the state of the economy in general was affect-ing the financial situation here at B’nai Israel. At that time, the projected deficit for 2010 was huge, and grow-ing. Dues income was not keeping up with our cost of doing business and I asked for help from all who were able. Happily and not surprisingly, your response to that appeal was overwhelming. Pledges and donations, large and small, followed. Some are being paid in installments
and “help” continues to arrive monthly. We have more than doubled our historic Kol Nidre income by a substan-tial margin and triple our budget expectation is not out of reach by year end.
The generosity of Temple families and friends has made a major inroad in that anticipated year-end deficit. More than one in four Temple families pitched in and for that, we say a sincere THANK YOU. While we are not out of the woods long term, and will continue to rely on the generosity of our members for the foreseeable future, the situation is more manageable now. What you have done for your Congregation is very much appreciated.
As I read our weekly announcements at the conclusion of services each Friday evening, I am reminded of how much goes on at our Temple for anyone with the interest and the time to participate. As a suggestion, read through the bulletin each month when it arrives by mail, or check it out on-line even sooner, and make note of dates and events relevant to you and members of the family. Use the calendar to plan your Temple activities in advance and try to include a Shabbat Service where you can. B’nai Israel is here for you, as you have shown us yet again that you are here for us. I urge you to take advantage of what we have to offer.

Latkes Anyone? I love Chanukah! I enjoy eating greasy latkes, singing silly songs and yes…I even spin a pretty mean dreidle! When my sister I were little, probably about five and two years old, since we still lived in an apartment in Brooklyn at the time, my parents must have been feeling the pressure of the Christmas commotions and created a “Chanukah Bush” to put our presents under. It was one of those small (4ft) silver tinsel trees. My mom hung blue shiny menorah decorations, blue tinsel garland, blue glass ornament balls, and plastic dreidles. She, of course, didn’t leave out the all important “Star of David” on the top. We were told that the “Chanukah fairy” had placed our gifts under the very special bush just for us. Now for two small children whose friends all had the Christmas stockings and trees and cookies and Santa, this was a perfect solution in my parents’ opinion to make us feel important and not different. Once I had children of my own, I chose not to carry on Mom’s well intentioned tradition for a number of reasons. I began to understand something that I’m not sure my mother (May she rest in peace) ever really got. Being different is what makes Chanukah special. Being Jewish is what makes me special. Avoiding the Hallmark hype is what allows the Festival of Lights to be what it was meant to be in the first place. It is a time to celebrate our Jewish heritage and the strength that it gives us. It is a time to sing with friends and family about a triumph in our history. It is a time to thank G-d for all that we have that is worth celebrating. The miracle of the oil is a reminder that what makes us different is what makes us special and worthy of gifts from Adonai. So I hope you will remember to avoid the pressure to be like everyone else and instead celebrate with tasty latkes and silly songs and a mean game of dreidle. May you find your home filled with more latkes than you can eat and songs that bring an infinite amount of joy into your family’s hearts!!! Wishing you and your family a very Happy Chanukah! The first meeting of the Friendship Group was a great success.
Some suggested activities were discussions, movies, lectures and mitzvah projects for charity. The bottom line is that people want to make friends and enjoy getting together.
Our next meeting is scheduled for December 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm when we will celebrate Chanukah.

Rabbi Moss, in conjunction with Rabbi Losben of the Sinai Reform Temple in Bay Shore, will offer a Taste of Judaism Class, funded by the Union for Reform Judaism, on the first three Thursday evenings in January at 8 pm. Rabbi Losben will hold the same classes on the first three Monday/Tuesday evenings. These classes will present an overview of Jewish philosophy, history, beliefs, customs, and observances.
The class is open to the public and it particularly wants to welcome the unaffiliated in our community. So, if you know of those who are not Temple members, please tell them about this. Please register by calling the Temple at 563-1660.
A Special Thank You
The Music Shabbat on October 27th was a real hit. A special thank you to Cantor Ilana, Leo Cassuto, Paul Fink, Lorraine Pappas, Jarrod Randall, and Ellen Spergel for making the evening so enjoyable and inspirational. The next Music Shabbat is April 29th. The cantor invites all musicians to be a part of the wonderful Jewish experience.
MILITARY BRIDGE January 22, 2010 Brotherhood and Sisterhood will once again be hosting the Annual Military Bridge game. You do not need to know how to play bridge in order to have a great time at this rotational card game.

Chanukah Blessings from the URJ Website
This year, we kindle the first candle of Chanukah on Wednesday night, December 1st and the last candle on Wednesday night, December 8th. Candles are added to the Chanukiah from right to left but are kindled from left to right. The newest candle is lit first. (On the Shabbat of Chanukah, kindle the Chanukah lights first and then the Shab-bat candles.) Light the Shamash - the helper candle - first using it to kindle the rest of the Chanukah lights; say or sing: Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tsivanu l'hadlik ner shel Chanukah. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to kindle the Cha-nukah lights. We hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. The Chinese Auction was a huge success! Thank you to all who donated items and time for this outstanding event..
It is December already and Chanukah is just around the corner. Our Annual Children’s Chanukah party is always a delight (even if we smell like latkes for hours). It will be held on December 5, 2010 at 12:00 pm, and we hope to see you there.
On December 21 we have an evening of learning. We will be able to learn how to knit, crochet, or just be there to support one another (se ad on next page). In this season of “Lights” let us enjoy and not stress and remember what the holday is all about.
To be successful, Sisterhood needs you and we look forward to seeing you.

Despite the cutesy title (the book was more sensibly published in Britain as "The Other Hand") and the coy book-flap description ("It is a truly special storyand we don't want to spoil it"), "Little Bee" will blow you away.

Tuesday, December 21 at 7:30PM As a kickoff to eventually crocheting and knitting lap blankets for nursing home patients and preemie caps for hospital nurseries, we are offering an instruction workshop that will continue as a project-based group on a regular basis this year.
We will be teaching the art of knitting and crocheting and the schedule will depend on the participants. We need more teachers and of course, we need women who are interested in learning the skills needed to go forward with this project. If you are interested in beginner, intermediate, or advanced instruction, can teach either one or both skills, or you want to attend and begin the project, please email me. Pre-registration is required in order to have the materials and the instructors available. Also, donations of yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks would be greatly appreciated! Looking Ahead Tu BiSh’vat January 1920

Tu BiSh'vat or the "New Year of the Trees" is Jewish Arbor Day. The holiday is observed on the fifteenth (tu) of Sh'vat. Scholars believe that Tu BiSh'vat was originally an agricultural festival, marking the emergence of spring. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.C.E. this holiday was a way for Jews to symbolically bind themselves to their former homeland by eating foods that could be found in Israel. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century Kabbalists created a ritual for Tu BiSh'vat similar to the Passover seder. Today, Tu BiSh'vat has also become a tree planting festival in Israel, in which both Israelis and Jews around the world plant trees in honor or in memory of a loved one or friend. Donations We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.
Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

My Own Endowment Fund? The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify.
