A Message from Chris Southall, Principal

November was another busy month at Brockington

College, the highlights of which were our gradings as a

good school with outstanding features by Ofsted and as

an outstanding school through the statutory inspection

that we receive as a Church of England School. The

Church of England Inspector was completely enthused by

the way that college life is based around our Christian

values and offers so many opportunities to the pupils. A

copy of the report has been issued to all parents with

the bulletin.

The inspection coincided with Remembrance Week at the

college when we held assemblies throughout the week

based upon this theme. The three assemblies taken by

Mr Howell, from the maths faculty, were truly inspiring

and not likely to be forgotten by pupils or staff. On

Thursday of this week, Evie Dunger from Year 9 played

‗The Last Post‘ on the cornet as all members of the

college observed two minutes silence, during which you

could have heard a pin drop.

It was good to see so many parents in attendance at the

latest Parents‘ Forum meeting where we discussed

Parents‘ Evenings, with several good suggestions being

put forward for consideration. We were also able to

feedback to parents on how parental communication has

been improved since their comments at the previous

forum event. Further details of the Parent‘ Forum events

can be viewed later in the bulletin.

Finally, I would urge you all to attend the Brockington

Christmas Fayre on Friday 3 December from 4.00 pm to

7.00 pm when you have the chance to pick up some

Christmas bargains, alongside supporting college

fundraising with profits split between our Kenyan

charities and supporting our own pupils.

Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools:

Brockington College is Outstanding!

Following on swiftly from the recent Ofsted

inspection, the college received a visit from

Inspector Jane Lewis on Monday 8 and Tuesday

9 November. All Church of England Schools are

inspected shortly after their Ofsted inspection

and therefore it was our turn.

The Inspection focuses on four main areas,

which are: Leadership and Management;

Provision for Pupils; Collective Worship and RE.

Following a very rigorous process, we are

absolutely delighted to announce that we were

graded as an ‗Outstanding School‘ as a result of

an outstanding grading in each of the four

different categories. This is a wonderful

achievement and you can read the report, which

has been issued to pupils, with the college

bulletin.

URGENT: Dropping Off

and Collecting by Car

The college car park area is

becoming a dangerous place because of the amount of

adults that use the car park to drop off or collect

pupils. This is a particular concern at the end of the

college day when we are trying to manage the arrival of

several school buses that take pupils home. Recently,

buses have been unable to get into the car park, unable

to leave the car park and have had to reverse within

the car park because of the presence of cars waiting

to pick up pupils. This has also caused traffic jams on

Blaby Road, as cars wait to get into the college car

park. All of which makes it a very dangerous place.

If you do have to drop off or collect children by car,

please use Mill Lane at the rear of the college, where

you can safely park on the road or use the college car

park at the rear. This will be a little less convenient,

but a lot safer for all pupils leaving via the front of the

college. If you have no alternative and need to use the

college car park, please park in a designated space or

on the overspill car park adjacent to the new artificial

pitch. Please do not park on the double yellow lines,

which have been put down to allow the buses to get in

and out of the car park.

Should there continue to be a health and safety risk

for our pupils, we will regrettably have no alternative

but to shut the college gates to all visitors for a period

before and after the end of the college day.

Please help us to ensure the safety of all our pupils.

Arrangements for Last Day of Term:

Enderby Church, followed by a premiere performance

Parenting Suggestions

Regarding Technology

Become Involved with your

Child’s Cyberspace

Have them share with you all their user names and

passwords. If this is creating a trust issue, perhaps a

good compromise is to have your child write down all the

user account names and passwords on a sheet of paper

and place this in a sealed envelope to only be opened by

the parent in case of an emergency.

Contact Miss Lewis if you have any concerns or

would like further advice:

[email protected]

College Website Photographs

As part of the new website, we aim

to regularly display photographs of

events at Brockington College. This

will obviously include photographs

of pupils. If you do not want your child to appear in a photograph on the website or in any other medium, please let us know in writing and we will ensure that this is the case. Letters should be addressed to Mr Southall at the College.

We should also add that we use ‗flickr‘ to host the

photographs, but they are available only on the

college website and not via any other website or

social networking area.

Medical/First Aid

Facilities at the College At Brockington College we have a

team of qualified First Aiders who

are ‗on call‘ to deal with any accidents that may occur.

We also have a purpose built Medical Room where

pupils who are feeling sick or ill are assessed. If they

are unable to take further part in lessons then

parents/carers, or another named contact person will

be telephoned and asked to collect their child.

Please do not send your child to school if he/she is

obviously unwell and is unable to carry out a full day of

lessons and activities.

If your child has sustained an injury during the

previous evening or before school, that requires

treatment, he/she should be taken to the family

doctor. We are sorry but we do not have the facilities

to treat ‗old‘ injuries.

Thank you for your continuing co-operation.

Parents’ Forum: Wednesday 10 November The meeting started with feedback from Mr Southall on

the recent Ofsted and SIAS Inspections at Brockington

College. It was reported that the College can be very

proud of its grading and of the many positive comments

received.

Mr Southall then went on to provide feedback of action

taken since the last Parents‘ Forum meeting, which

focussed on communication with parents. The major

development has been the college website, designed by

Michael Jones the College network manager, which has a

new look and many new features that will help parents to

become further involved and aware of the work of the

college. Additionally, the college bulletin is now

released once a month rather than once every half-term

and Parents‘ Forum meetings have been planned for

every half-term. Mr Southall also explained that the

college would use text messaging to inform parents of

lateness to college and for reminders of forthcoming

events, as well as for absence from college. Finally, the

college is planning to give all parents access to their

child‘s form tutor through an e-mail address link.

The main focus of the meeting was a parental discussion

on Parents‘ Evenings, with all matters discussed ranging

from the date and timing of the evening to the format

of the discussion between staff and parents. There

were some very interesting suggestions that the college

will now consider implementing.

All parents are very welcome to attend the Parents‘

Forum meetings with the next meeting taking place on

Wednesday 3 February from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm. The

topic for this meeting is homework.

FUTURECHEF 2011 LOCAL FINALS Shaun Bradshaw represented Brockington College on Saturday 13

November at Loughborough College. Shaun competed against 14

other school finalists and he was joint second youngest in the

competition. Team Shaun consisted of his mum, auntie, sister and

me (Mrs Clarke). Our job was purely to set up, clear up and then

disappear. The food prepared by all the finalists was outstanding

and despite Shaun competing against Year 11 students he did not let

us down, though we did feel a tad underdressed as a lot of the

students were wearing chefs whites!

The competition was judged by 5 chefs and they were very

impressed, they complemented Shaun on his wonderful apple tart

with lavender crème fraiche and honey. Shaun did not win the local

heat but he was recommended to consider a future within

hospitality. Well Done Shaun!

Family Cooking sessions If you are in Year 8 or 9 and have a younger

brother, sister or cousin aged between 7 and 10 you could

Harry Swindells match report (Year 7 Versus Welland Park) - 3 November 2010 Welland Park were our opponents. We had a bad start and conceded a goal within the first minute. However, we didn’t let our heads drop and after some good playing we were awarded a corner. Aston King scored directly from the corner, bringing us level at 1-1. Just before half time we were caught out by a long ball over the top and Welland Park re-gained the lead with a good finish. It was 1-2 at half time. We closed their players down quicker in the second half and it paid off as we slowly started to get more confident and get on top. Another goal by Aston King brought us level. We started to play as we know we can. After some good first time passing, Aston ran on to a through ball to complete a wonderful hat trick. Welland Park were a well disciplined side, who played as a team and were one of our toughest opponents so far. We know we still have much to improve on as a team but we have a good spirit and we work hard.

Final score: Brockington 3 Welland Park 2

Jai Pandit and James Hibbert match report (Year 8 versus Welland Park) - 3 November 2010 At the start of the match, Brockington got an early counter attack and a through ball set up Campbell Dibb as he took the keeper on and slipped the ball past him, carefully placing it in the centre of the goal. Welland responded with a quick counter on the wing. The winger pulled it back to their captain and hit it in the bottom corner for a goal. Brockington then took possession with a good move from Sam Wood which led us to the 18 yard box and a square ball to Campbell Dibb, the ball was shot into the bottom left hand corner. Welland’s captain had a good game, winning everything in the air but it wasn’t enough. Sam Wood had a lovely ball played to him and he didn’t disappoint, taking it round the keeper and slipping it in. After that, the game was sealed for Brockington and we topped it off with a tap in for Campbell Dibb who claimed his hat-trick.

Final Score: Brockington 4 Welland Park 1

Fishing Club Since February this year, boys have had the opportunity to learn about Fly Fishing.

Two boys persevered and, through a College link, became members of Leicester Fly Fishing

Association. Entering their Junior Championships held. They entered the Junior Championships which

were held on a really cold and windy day at Thornton Trout Fishery. The boys fished from a boat with

an experienced angler with them (Mr John Gunby a former England International!).

Alex Waddington caught 3 fish. Luke Bromley caught 1, both boys were fishing against more experienced juniors.

Alex ran out as the overall winner. Mr Gunby was delighted with the attitude and manner of the boys, saying it was

a joy to be out with them and they were a credit to the school.

We also entered 5 boys into a competition at Mill on the Soar Lake on 13 November. 4 Boys took the first 4

places!

Congratulations to Lewis Curnock, Jack Crowfoot, Alex Waddington, Jake Armston and Luke Bromley.

Hopefully the boys will continue to learn about all aspects of the sport of fishing and enjoy

improved catches along the way. Fishing Club meets Thursday lunchtime. Mr Buck.

A Place to Grow

Morrisons Vouchers THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind donations of Morrison Vouchers, we have been overwhelmed by your

response to our request of contributing your vouchers to the school. Our target was to reach 2,000 and due to the effort of parents and staff, we have a achieved a grand total of 2,444.

This, may I add, is 1,000 more than last year’s total and for a school that does not have a Morrisons store nearby, it is a brilliant result. This year we will be able to obtain seeds, tools and equipment for our groups to continue with their endless hard work on our plots in ‘A Place To Grow’. Once again we Thank You.

Charity, Fundraising and Global Community

Charity Vote The results are in and counted for the charities that we will be supporting as a school for this academic year. It

was a very close vote between the local/national charities of ‗Help for Hero‘s‘, ‗The Teenage Cancer Trust‘, ‗The

Cystic Fibrosis Trust‘ and ‗Rainbows‘. The charity with the most votes in the end was Rainbows. We look forward

to raising money over the coming months to help support such a worthy cause.

The international Charity was given overwhelming support. As a school we voted to continue supporting our own

Kash4Kenya Charity which supports two schools in Mtwapa, Kenya. In addition to this, we will also be supporting

the Philippines project in conjunction with Enderby Church and Danemill Primary school. We look forward to

coming up with lots of fun activities for fundraising over the coming months.

MacMillan Coffee Morning We held our annual Macmillan Coffee morning, where Mrs Wilde cooked an array of delicious

cakes, snacks and savouries. The staff room was bursting at the seams with eager teachers

trying to get their hands on a slice of homemade cake. £141.00 was raised on the day to

donate to the very worthy cause of ‗The Macmillan Nurses‘. Thank you also to Mrs Wilde

who spent hours of her time preparing and making the cakes, as she does every year.

Enderby Church – Philippines Project After the huge success of the ‗Teachers in the Stocks‘ which started our fundraising towards this project, we

followed up with a whole school non-uniform day. We were really pleased with the response to our fundraising

for the project and we are hopeful that when our contribution is combined with the fundraising from the

Enderby Church and Danemill school we will have easily reached our £2,000.00 target. Well done and thank you

to everybody who contributed to the £1,066.80 that we have raised so far. We hope to continue supporting this

project in the future.

Children in Need We raised £122.66 on Friday 19 November for ‗Children in Need‘ through our collection buckets

and ‗Spotty Tombola‘. Once again, the generosity of our students was overwhelming.

Meal Aid As outlined in our last Bulletin our ‗Meal Aid‘ fund started officially on Monday 22 November. However, we had

already raised 94p before the start date. The idea behind the fund is to raise enough money to start and

maintain a lunch programme at Sagail Primary school (one of the schools we are linked to) in Kenya. 38p will pay

for a cook to make one meal, £28.50 will feed 15 children for a whole week. Each time you go through the

canteen or Cindy‘s Pantry you will be given the option to ‗Meal Aid‘ 2p towards the fund. You may donate more if

you wish, or not at all. It really is a worthy cause as these children start school at 7.30 am and finish at 3.30 pm

and will not have anything to eat in all that time. Also once the programme is up and running, it may be the only

meal they have to eat in a day.

There is a display in the courtyard with the pictures of the 15 students involved, please go along and have a look

at the students whose lives will be directly affected by this fund.

Kenya We will shortly be starting the selection process to decide on the students who will be

taking part in the Kenya visit 2012. Once the final group are selected, it will be a long 16

months of fundraising ahead to enable them to cover the costs of their travel and also to

provide essential work and aid to the schools when we arrive in Easter 2012. We are

hoping to have selected the next group by Christmas from the current Year 8 and Year 9 groups. There has been

enormous interest shown so far, make sure you listen out to the bulletin for details about the next steps to being

involved.
