February 2011 Bulletin 1
Name: _____________________________________________ Form: _______________________
Message from Principal
On Wednesday 16 February, we held our annual Gifted and Talented music, drama and dance showpiece event. I was bowled over by the array of varied performances and along with many parents was treated to two hours of top-class entertainment. There can be no doubt about the talent that we have at Brockington and I can only thank the staff involved for harnessing the genius that was on show and of course the pupils for their confidence, the way that they supported one another and their skill. Of course, we also have some gifted and talented performers in other areas and I am delighted to hear of the success of three individuals in the sporting arena. Lucy Prior has been selected to take part in the British Snowboarding Championships at the end of March for the second consecutive year. The event takes place in Laax, Switzerland and we wish Lucy the very best of luck. Jay Pandit has just completed a visit to Bangalore in India as part of the Leicester City Academy Cricket Tour. As cricket fans will appreciate, this will have offered Jay the opportunity for some excellent coaching as well as the chance to sample Indian culture. I am also delighted to hear that Nathan Mistry has been chosen to undertake court assistance duties at the All England Open Badminton Championships. Nathan is a fine player himself and this will give him the closest possible view of the best players in England. These pupils are just three of the many that achieve success across a range of activities and I am regularly hearing positive things about the academic and non-academic achievements of our pupils and you will be able to read about further achievements in the bulletin. Please let me know if I have missed other successes and I will report them in future bulletins.
BROCKINGTON MATTERS
Whilst on the topic of positive events, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, under Mr Pickering’s leadership, for supporting the recent ski trip. This provided a fantastic experience for over 70 of our pupils and one which, I am certain, they will look back upon fondly in years to come. Congratulations also to all of the pupils that took part in the trip for your excellent behaviour, which was commented upon by all staff.
Additionally, I shouldn’t forget to thank Mrs Mills for organising the 7O fashion show or for the staff that have been involved in organising other trips this term or by providing clubs. You can read about these opportunities within the bulletin. Three dates for your diary are the April Fools’ Night Quiz on Friday 1 April, when we hope you will join us for an enjoyable evening (details within bulletin); the next meeting of Parents’ Forum on Wednesday 30
March to which all parents are very welcome and the closure of college all day on Friday 15 July for the extra Bank Holiday (details within bulletin).

Youthbike
Group 1 have now completed
their 12 week course at
Youthbike and are half way
through Group 2 as this Bulletin goes out to you.
The groups have learnt new skills, stripped and
rebuilt motorbike engines, airbrushing and repair
work to name a few. As each group completes 12
weeks of work their folders which include
worksheets, photographs and a diary are sent to
Asdan external moderation where each pupil will
receive 3 credits towards a Bronze Asdan Award
for 30 hours work on an activity. Well done to the
first group for all your hard work.
B.Sound
This year an activity was introduced where a group
of selected pupils had a period of time to create
and compile their own piece of music by using the
computer programmes Dance E-Jay or Audacity.
After completion, the pupils had their tunes
transferred to a CD and went on to design a
personal cover.
The results from the first group were outstanding
with some songs being played in assembly whilst
the pupils involved received their certificates for
taking part in the project.
A Place To Grow
A VERY BIG THANK YOU ….to all
who contributed to Brockington‟s
collection of Morrison's Lets Grow vouchers. We
have now received our order and are in possession
of a portable greenhouse, propagators, a variety
of seeds, plant food and compost. We have
worked throughout the cold winter months
creating wonderful scarecrows ready for the
spring and with the new equipment, we will no
doubt have a bountiful amount of
vegetables this year.
If you have any tools in good working
order that you would like to donate
to this project then please contact Miss Reynolds
at the college. Thank you .
Living for Sport
Over the past 12 weeks 12 Year 9 girls have been
involved in the Living For Sport project. The sport
chosen was swimming and the girls received
training from a qualified instructor. Not only did
the girls thoroughly enjoy their lessons, but they
made a marked improvement on their swimming
strokes, diving and breathing techniques which
helped to build their confidence and self esteem.
Well done girls! Later on this year the Living For
Sport Mentor, Dermot Gascoyne from Sky
Sports will be visiting all pupils involved to
discuss how sport can enrich and benefit all
aspects of life.
BROCKINGTON NEWS
Extra Bank Holiday 2011 Please be aware that college will be closed on Friday 15 July 2011 for the extra Bank Holiday in lieu of the Royal Wedding Bank Holiday. As we will be on Easter holiday on the day of the Royal Wedding (Friday 29 April), we were originally granted a Bank Holiday on Tuesday 3 May. However, the majority of schools in our area have decided to open on Tuesday 3 May and close on Friday 15 July instead, so that pupil preparation for exams is not compromised. In an attempt to help as many parents as possible, with children at local schools, we will also be open on Tuesday 3 May and closed on Friday 15 July.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
In February, seven girls from Year 9 were involved in The WISE campaign which collaborates
with industry and education to encourage UK girls of school age to value and pursue STEM
or construction related courses in school or college and to move on into related careers.
We were also joined by girls from Lutterworth High and Thomas Estley.
The girls visited Loughborough University and had the opportunity to meet engineering
students. They were given challenges and had to design and build a bridge in groups.
We then had a tour of the company
AstraZeneca where we met female scientists
and visited the labs.
On the second day, the girls were given a group task of designing a solar powered car; they had
to design the car and then build it using various materials. The cars were then judged by a panel of
engineers and designers.
The girls all had a great time and below are some comments about the two days:
“It was fun and I learnt some interesting facts about engineering” student from Lutterworth High
school
“It was fun and interesting to learn new things” Emily Panter
“I enjoyed working with new people and being creative” student from Thomas Estley
All the students will receive a CREST award and this will be presented by a representative from the
University.

THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE NEXT DRAGON?
What would you do with £10.00? Think you could turn it into a £100.00?
Next half term every Wednesday lunchtime you will have the chance to put your
business skills to the test with the Tenner Tycoon challenge.
Pupils are given a £10.00 note and are challenged, between 1 and 31 March 2011, to
make money, and make a difference one ten pound note at a time.
Once the challenge is over the students are asked to return the original £10.00 loan and keep or donate
the profit they have made. Awards are offered to the student/students who have the biggest social
investment, deliver the highest financial return or the best business idea. Last year the most
amount of profit made was an impressive £920.00!
Why take part?
Make Money: A tenner gives students the opportunity to take part in an exciting, real-life enterprise
activity which both compliments and enhances the existing curriculum.
Make a Difference: Support your local community via your Tenner funded social enterprise or business.
If interested, come to Room 114 (Mrs R Thorpe) on Wednesday 2 March 2011 at 12.40 pm.
World Book Day
On or before World Book Day on
Thursday 3 March 2011, £1.00 Book
Vouchers will be given to students to
use towards the purchase of a book of their choice.
There will also be a selection of £1.00 books
available to buy with the voucher, although shops will
have limited stocks of the titles available so you will
need to be quick!
Most book shops will accept the vouchers and you
have until Sunday 27 March to redeem them.
The Library will be celebrating the day itself with
quizzes, book sales, lucky dip prize draws and a
variety of other activities throughout the week;
there may even be a possible return of the
Gorilla! We will also be celebrating World Book Day
during tutor time on the 3 March with ERIC
(Everyone Reads In Class) so please encourage your
child to bring their reading book to
school to ensure they participate
fully in activities. Details of all
events will be displayed on the
plasma screen in the Courtyard.
MONTHLY MATHS CHALLENGE!
Congratulations to Alice Hogan (7R). Alice won January’s Maths Challenge and as well as her certificate, has received 5 vouchers to use at the canteen, to purchase 5 free items of her choice. The draw for February’s entries will take place shortly.
LOST PROPERTY
Lost property is now displayed outside the main college reception at lunch times giving pupils a daily chance to reclaim any missing items. Parents/carers who wish to come and view lost property should telephone reception (01162863722) to make arrangements to come and do so after school.
Due to the volume of lost property
anything remaining after 2 weeks
will be donated to charity

Fashion for Freedom (7O)
(7O) have been learning all about child
labour and human rights in our
Citizenship lessons. All around the
world, children are being denied basic
things such as their right to education,
healthcare, safety and clean water. We
decided that as well as learning about
this topic, we would like to do
something to highlight the issue, as well
as raise some money to help protect
children from child labour.
We decided to hold a fashion show because many children are forced to work
in sweat shops making cheap clothing for us. The clothes and jewellery were
made and modelled by our very own (7O) pupils. Each collection was given a
name and a reason for the designs, linked to children‟s rights.
These collections were:-
Sweets for my sweet Pink rocks Animals Streetwise denim Holiday Hot office
In between two of the collections Chloe J Green sang „No One‟ by
Alisha Keys. During the interval Mrs Mills and Miss Thorpe served
tea and coffee, and Miss Gray and the Fair Trade group ran a Fair
Trade stall. There was also a raffle. Miss Heggs and Mr Southall
gave out awards for the best designs and catwalk poses!
In total over £100.00 was raised on the night, which will be donated to Save the Children.
We would like to say a huge thank you to all the 7O pupils and helpers (including Mrs Thorpe
and Mrs Shaw), especially a massive thank you to Mrs Mills who organised the whole event.
By Chloe, Megan, Simran and Lucy.

Time to REflect: News from the Religious Education Department Staff meetings with NATRE and the local diocese to plan a new Scheme of Work for schools in Leicestershire went very
well. The adapted schemes and brand new topics will be implemented in Brockington from September 2011. Staff from
Lutterworth College, Lutterworth High School and Brockington College have also finished the new transition GCSE
unit on Religion and Animals which will be taught to all Year 9s after Easter.
In the classroom…
Year 7 pupils have begun their work on Easter by exploring events of the first few days in Holy Week: Palm Sunday,
Monday and Tuesday. Pupils have been trying to find out why people went from loving and welcoming Jesus on the
Sunday, to hating him and wanting to get rid of him by the Wednesday. After half term, groups of pupils will present
their findings and be peer assessed on their understanding of these events, which are at the centre of Christian beliefs
today.
Year 8 pupils have produced some brilliant designs for their ecumenical “Church for all Christians”. Visitors from
local churches have assisted in the classroom to give their ideas too! Pupils will now finalise their sales boards and
“pitch” their ideas in a bid to be chosen. The ten finalist groups from each year group will be judged and the
winners of the final design chosen will receive a cash prize! Look out Alan Sugar – our project managers and sales
teams are amazing!
Year 9 pupils have finished their unit of work on Religion and Art, including the production of
some fabulous murals! These were based on their knowledge and understanding of how such
artwork is used in Northern Ireland to express views and beliefs.
Next, we will be looking at Rites of Passage where pupils will discover how three of the world’s
religions mark special occasions in human life. Pupils will compare and contrast the practices they discover in the
different religions, examine the concept of commitment and reflect on their own commitments. Then, we will move
onto the final GCSE RS/ Learning Skills crossover unit on Religion and Animals.
Coming up this half term…
Celebrating RE! Month Celebrating RE! Month is a National event, organised by the RE Council of England and Wales. It’s a month long
celebration of RE in schools, colleges, universities, faith and belief communities and local communities throughout
England and Wales. Its purpose is to celebrate the contribution that high quality RE can make to the education of
every child and young person. It also aims to raise public awareness and understanding of the nature of RE as a
subject which is relevant, challenging, interesting and of educational value to all, whatever their religious or
philosophical background.
Brockington College will be focusing on the subject of RE during March, with links to RE being made in different subjects. There will
also be the opportunity to take part in many competitions, both within school and nationally.
Shrove Tuesday House Pancake Race
The Pancake Race is back! Representatives from all four houses will compete for this race on Tuesday 8 March. The word “shrove”
comes from the old word “shrive” which means to confess your wrongdoings. The idea is that Christians would confess their sins
before Lent began, and use up all the rich, fatty ingredients in their houses before the Lenten Fast. If you are giving anything up for
Lent, let Mrs Mills know to gain an easy merit!
For more information on the history and religious significance of Shrove Tuesday, try this website: http://www.request.org.uk/main/
festivals/lent/lent04.htm
Year 8 Easter Service
Following the success of Brockington’s annual Harvest Festival for Year 7 pupils, this year, Year 8 will celebrate Easter with a special
church service on Friday 15 April at St John’s, Enderby. Just like the Harvest Festival, Year 8 pupils can take part in readings, singing
and plays to be performed on the day.
Further information...
Without a doubt, a visit or a visitor in the RE department can create memorable and challenging learning experiences. If you are of any
faith and would like to be more involved, perhaps bringing in photos, or offering your time in a Q&A session, please get in touch. After
all, other people are perhaps the greatest resource in RE! For any further information, please feel free to email or arrange an
appointment to discuss:

Drama News
The King and I On 9 January 40 pupils from all year groups and Ms Broadfield, Mr Jones
and Mrs Wright enjoyed a visit to Leicester‟s Curve Theatre to see their production of „The
King and I‟. The show was fantastic and the behaviour of the pupils was outstanding. Well done
to you all and thank you to your parents/carers for providing your transport.
Pupil Comments: I really like The King and I because it was a brilliant story, that included comedy, romance, and action. There was some amazing scenery and costumes and it was acted out really well. My favourite bit was when the king put on a show to entertain the guests from England. It was a really fun trip and I would definitely see it again. Lydia Frost (9K).
Matilda: The Musical On 26 January - 46 Year 7 pupils travelled to Stratford with Ms Broadfield and Mrs Webb to
go and take part in two workshops and see „Matilda: The Musical‟ performed in the Courtyard
Theatre. We worked with several members of the Royal Shakespeare Company and enjoyed
participating in a variety of Drama activities. Pupils were also given the opportunity to join some
of the actors on stage and perform some of the lines from the play, which was very exciting!
After lunch we then went to watch the matinee showing of „Matilda: The Musical‟ which was
absolutely superb. Even though the show had sold out we had front row seats which gave us an
amazing insight into the production. The representative from the RSC told us that she had not
worked with such a well behaved group for a long time and we were extremely impressed with
the pupils throughout the whole day. Well done Year 7!
Pupil Comments: Monica Wormleighton said, “I thought that the play was really good because the actors performed their roles perfectly”. Rhiannon Wilkins told us, “I thought that the girl that played Matilda was very brave to sing in front of everyone”. Tiffany Baker thought, “the performance was really astonishing because I didn‟t expect it to be that amazing and the character Matilda is fab!” Laura Marchmont comments, “It was a wonderful performance and I would have loved to be up on the stage doing it myself!!!”
Performing Arts Gifted and Talented Showcase 16 February saw this year‟s showcase evening take place which displayed the many wide and varied talents of our
amazing pupils. We saw a variety of drama, music and dance performed to an extremely high standard by our
fabulous students. You were all fantastic and made us extremely proud. A huge congratulations to you all!
Pupil Comments: On Wednesday 16 February, I took part in Brockington‟s Gifted and Talented Performing Arts Evening. There were lots of different acts and pieces of music. For example, there were comedy pieces, monologues and dualogues from books and films and some acts that students had written themselves. The music was also fantastic as there was a wide range from flutes to guitars, violins and piano. On the night I played the part of Viola from Shakespeare‟s play „Twelfth Night‟. It was a challenge remembering the lines because the words were old, and I had to figure out what they meant. It was a lot of fun being up on the stage performing to everyone, and the whole night was a huge success. I would definitely take part again if I could. Thank you to all the teachers that made it possible. By Emma Garner (9K).
Summer Production 28 June and 29 June – ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Auditions are currently taking place for this year‟s show, „Little Shop of Horrors‟. Pupils
from all year groups are invited to audition and we would love to see as many of you starring
in it as possible. Come and see Ms Broadfield or Mrs Shaw for any further information.

kept the audience thoroughly entertained. It was a great celebration of the talent we have here at
Brockington College. Well done to everyone who took part, the hard work really paid off. Well done
everyone!

Kenya 2012
With the trip departure date fast approaching, plans are well underway to
make it as successful as the previous visit. The selection process started
with over 200 students showing an initial interest and 50 students
committing to take part in the selection process itself. At the first stage the numbers were
cut to 35. The presentations delivered were thoughtful and showed determination, commitment
and drive. The standards were high and they were delivered with confidence and empathy. The
second stage was an interview with a panel of teachers. Again the answers were well thought
out and showed great understanding of the challenges ahead. At this stage the numbers were
cut again to 28. The third and final stage was the team building activities. We had great fun
and the students were even given the opportunity to be creative and think on their feet, similar
to situations they would face in Kenya. The standards were again very high and the decision as
to who would be successful in their selection for the trip and who was not was a long and
arduous task.
Eventually, after hours of discussion, the decision was finally made and the final 20 were
selected. Those successful were: Franklin De Giovanni (8R), George Heath (8C), Rumit Mehta
(8G), Jack Clark (9I), Cameron Vear (9G), Luke Evans (8O), Josh Walker (9B), Fred Ray (8I),
Clarissa Ward (8T), Ellie Quinn (8G), Charlotte Christie-Smith 8I, Rhiannon Draycott (8B), Lucy
Ashmore (8O), Bailie Leveridge (9O), Melissa Griffith (9B), Tabby Bryant (8R), Joy Willett
(8C), Lucy Prior (9C), Katie Mahon (9R) and Charlotte Oxborough (9R).
Now the group has been selected the hard work really starts!! If you see our Kash 4 Kenya sign
please support us.
Year 7 Disco
The annual Year 7 disco was a
huge success again this year. With a high
turnout of over 160 pupils it was buzzing
with excitement. There was dancing,
limbo, singing and all round fun to be
had! Photos are available to view on the
school website and the school shared area.
We are looking forward now to the Year 8
Ball on Wednesday 6 April and the Prom in
July.

Alternative Easter Easter is a time of year where we reflect on our Christian values and also on giving up
luxuries and or bad habits in the time of Lent. Increasingly it is becoming less about the
tradition of Easter and more about the confectionary companies. Chocolate seems to have
become the main purpose of Easter celebrations, we would like to offer an alternative.
As part of our Meal Aid Project, where we are raising money to fund a school lunch
programme in a primary school in Kenya, we are launching our alternative Easter gift. We
are selling „Meal Aid Vouchers‟. Each voucher is worth £1.00, you can buy one or multiple,
dependent on your budget. We would urge people to buy them as gifts instead of Easter
Eggs; not only will the money be used to feed children who may not otherwise get to eat
during the day, the recipient will also get a voucher and an information sheet detailing how they have
helped a child in need. If you would be interested in buying one of our alternative Easter gifts then
please email [email protected] or contact reception for more information.
Meal Aid Meal aid Project has gotten off to a good start. We have raised a total of45.79 so far. We have some
other Meal Aid strategies to put into place over the next few weeks to supplement the fundraising, so
look out for special Meal Aid products for sale in the Canteen and in Cindy‟s Pantry, where the total
profit of the sale is donated to Meal Aid. Also, don‟t forget to ask to Meal Aid your purchases at break
and lunch.

Brockington College’s Artificial Grass Pitch
Our full size 3G pitch can be used for football and training for a range of sports and is fully floodlit and covered
by CCTV. The rubber crumb pitch is available to hire any evening of the week, (where spaces in the timetable
permit) for casual pay and play use, as well as weekly team training. The pitch can be hired by the third or in its
entirety, (our thirds are approximately three times the size of some operators‟ small sided pitches). We also hire
out the facility on Saturday and Sunday too if you need a surface that won‟t get muddy in winter! Whether you
want a pitch for a one off football game or need a pitch to train on a weekly basis, we offer competitive prices
and a state of the art playing surface to suit your sporting needs.
For more information, please contact Steve Buck ([email protected]) or 0116 286 3722 for

Incredible Years Course For parents of Children
aged 4/13 years
Who is it for? This FREE course will run for 10-12 weeks during term time and each session will be approximately 2 1/2 hours.
It is for mums, dads, grandparents or carers of children aged between 4 and 13 years and who would like to learn
how to manage their child's behaviour. This will help to create a happier home and support your child‟s education
allowing them to get the most from school.
What do the sessions involve? All of the sessions are run by trained course leaders in a range of community venues and usually have between 10
and 14 parents or carers – all experiencing similar issues to you.
What does it cost? The programmes are free of charge – we provide light refreshments and if needed we can provide a crèche or help
with childcare costs, and help you with transport.
The sessions are a way to:
Help you as a parent/carer
Talk about what it means to be a parent
Discuss ways to improve your relationship with your child
We also aim to support you and help you feel more confident in dealing with your child‟s behaviour.
Through group discussion and looking at video clips of real life parent-child interactions, we
consider strategies to deal with common behaviour problems in children such as swearing, fighting and refusing to
do what they are told.
Not everyone likes the idea of attending a course and having to talk in front of other people, or other people
knowing their problems. We would like to reassure you that this course is very informal and we try to make sure
that you never feel pressured to talk when you don't want to. Don‟t forget, we are not here to lecture you but to
encourage you to participate!
What happens now? We would like to meet you before the course starts to find out a bit about you and your child, and to give you the
opportunity to meet us in person and ask any questions or concerns you may have.
This meeting can take place in your home at a time that is convenient for you and will be very informal.
The course is free of charge and refreshments are provided every week and don't forget, if you need
help with childcare or transport, please speak a course leader who will be happy to arrange this for you
all free of charge!
