A Message from Chris Southall, Principal On behalf of the college, I would like to wish all parents, carers and pupils a very Happy Christmas. We hope that you will enjoy the time together as a family over the holiday period. I would also like to thank, on your behalf, all the staff at Brockington College for their hard work this term. Having worked alongside the staff for one term, I have witnessed daily their dedication to providing the best opportunities for the children and in giving them the chance to „learn to live life to the full‟. Those of you that attended the Christmas Concert will, I am sure, have been impressed by the standard of performance across music, drama, dance and comedy. I was delighted by the ability and confidence on display and look forward to another entertaining evening in the form of „Brockington‟s Got Talent‟, which is taking place this week. The pupils have also performed well on the sports field recently. The Year 7 boys‟ football team remains unbeaten to date and are feared by all opposition. The Year 8 rugby team were winners of a County Rugby Tournament and the Year 9 Girls‟ hockey team were runners-up this week in the Leicestershire County Hockey League finals, where they were the only state school representatives. Having reviewed the attainment and attitude grades of all pupils, I am also very pleased with the progress that the vast majority of pupils are making at Brockington. The Year 7 pupils have adapted very well to secondary school, whilst Year 8 and Year 9 pupils are showing progress across a range of subjects, indicating they have the ability to reach their full academic potential in the near future. Finally, can I thank everyone that supported the Brockington Christmas Fayre by their attendance or through buying and selling raffle tickets. We are delighted to say that the event raised just short of £2,000 which will be divided between our Kenyan charities and support of further opportunities for pupils at Brockington College. BROCKINGTON MATTERS

ATTENDANCE

As you will be aware our attendance was deemed to be

outstanding at the recent Ofsted Inspection.

However, we are always seeking to improve attendance

and the way in which we monitor it. After a recent

audit undertaken by the Attendance Improvement

Officer, we decided to review our process of

contacting parents/carers when their child‟s

attendance drops below a certain level. The County

attendance target for schools this year is 95% which is

a maximum of 10 days (2 weeks) absence over the

whole year. As a consequence, letters will be sent to

parents/carers if their child‟s attendance falls to

between 90-95% to alert them to the situation. If

attendance continues to be a cause for concern, a

further letter will be sent when a child‟s attendance

falls between 85-90% and 80-85%. Once a child‟s

attendance falls below 80% it is usual that the

Attendance Improvement Service will become involved.

We hope the letters will help to prevent this from

happening and ensure we hit our target of 95% this

year.

Reporting Absence

If your child is going to be absent, it is important to

ring the school as early as possible by telephoning 0116

2863722 then following the instructions to leave a

voicemail message on the absence line. Please give the

name and form of your child and the reason for

absence (eg nature of illness).

We also use an electronic messaging system to alert

parents via text messaging if we have not received

information regarding absence or lateness by 11.00 am.

Please provide a note on your child‟s return, addressed

to the Form Tutor. If possible try to, arrange

start of the Christmas holidays. College buses have been arranged for 2.20 pm)

Pupils are due back to school on

Holidays During Term Time The Local Authority has asked us to politely remind you to

avoid taking your child out of college for a holiday, visit to

relatives or family event unless there are exceptional

circumstances. If exceptional circumstances do apply,

please write to Mr Southall at the college at least 10

working days prior to the period of absence. You should

state the dates and purpose of the absence and the

exceptional reason that requires your child to be absent

during term time. The college is then required to use the

Local Authority guidance to make a decision as to whether

or not to authorise absence. This will involve a points

calculation based upon the reason for the absence, dates

of the absence and the attendance record of the child.

Collection of pupils by car at the

end of the college day As parents who collect pupils

will be aware, we have been asking parents to park in a

designated car park space or in the college overspill car

park. This has resulted in a real improvement in pupil

safety and access to and from the site for the buses.

Thank you to everyone that has supported this request. If

you do need to collect pupils by car, please continue to

park in these areas or pick up your child from Mill Lane

which is a lot quieter.

EMERGENCY CLOSURE OF COLLEGE THOROUGH SNOWFALLS OR OTHER EMERGENCY

Only in the last resort will the College be

closed.

Where the decision to close is made it will be communicated to parents/carers via

Parenting Suggestions Regarding Technology

Become Involved in Your Child’s Cyberspace

Ask your child to show you what they have in their profiles/pages. How do they describe themselves? Does it show too much detail about your child? E.g. mobile phone numbers, postcodes, address, e-mail address, home telephone. Try putting your personal details into Google and see what comes back, can you or a member of your household be found by your postcode or mobile phone number? Contact Miss Lewis, ICT Dept if you have any concerns or would like further advice: [email protected]

La journée francaise à Brockington

Brockington held its third annual French Day on Friday 3 December. Students and Staff

celebrated all things French around the school. French food was provided by the ladies in

the canteen and normal lessons around the school had a French flavour.

The French Department was deeply impressed with the level of bilingualism shown by

staff in all curriculum areas. During the day lessons had a French slant to them, pupils

were given an opportunity to discover and learn about France and its culture but in a different context to normal

French lessons. This cross curricular approach was interpreted in the following ways. In Drama they performed „un

hommage‟ to Marcel Marceau, the undisputed king of mime and did some mime with face paint and black and white

attire, we‟ve never seen so many people trapped inside the box before! In Music pupils showed great patriotism

with the Marseillaise (the French National Anthem), in Art they looked at Georges Seurat and Pointillism and had a

go at their own version. In ICT they focused on how to make use of accents on computers and added a thoroughly

French theme to their work, bleu, blanc rouge everywhere. In English they tasted Baguettes and learnt about

their origins. Maths looked at numbers in French; using them for shopping, things they could buy with

pocket money, calculating exchange rates and also learning French words for shapes and using them to

construct them. Geography did French map work, working together to discover where French football

teams come from. History looked at the French Revolution. And finally in French we looked at foods,

recipes, films and pupils enjoyed some great French music.

Thank you to all staff and students who made it a great success. On vous remercie beaucoup!!

London Trip:

On Wednesday 24 November and Thursday 25

November, 44 lucky Brockington pupils, along

with Mrs Broadfield, Miss Perridge, Mrs Wright

and Mr Jones, experienced a great opportunity

to visit London. Their groups went to many

interesting attractions, as well as going to see

two different theatre productions.

We firstly, went to Windsor town and the

castle. There were many shops that sold

interesting things that you would only ever find

in London, and the views provided by the castle were spectacular. Then, we arrived at the hotel (The Wembley

Plaza), which was very classy and provided a great view of Wembley

Stadium.

We went to dinner at Pizza Hut, followed by our first theatre trip of

the two days to see “Wicked” at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Overall

the experience was amazing and the atmosphere throughout the

performance was electric.

Our second and final day of the trip consisted of having a continental

breakfast, leaving the hotel for the last time, and having a ride on the

outrageously large London Eye. We then received an added bonus,

experiencing a visit to the 4D London Eye Experience, before going to

the bustling Covent Gardens to shop and watch the many street

performers.

Finally, we went to the matinee performance of “Billy Elliot”, which

really captured the image of miners‟ strikes of the 1980‟s, before

eventually returning home after an extra 2 hours delay.

Overall, the trip was an awe-inspiring experience, and has really

changed my opinion of the modern drama scene today. Thanks to

everyone for working so hard to make this trip an absolute triumph.

Robert Smith (9I)

A great big ‘Thank you’ to all of the staff and pupils who made the trip a huge success. All of the pupils who attended will receive a souvenir certificate and photograph as a special ‘thank you’ from me – you were a credit to the school and yourselves and you made me very proud indeed. Well done! Mrs Broadfield. Postcards Home

Congratulations to you all for your hard work in Drama lessons this term. We have celebrated success in lots of

ways with commendations, merits and stickers and some of you will also be having postcards sent home. Keep up

the good work next term!

celebrate the internationally acclaimed mime artist,

Marcel

Marceau.

Everyone

who took

part went

to a great

effort and

they all

looked fantastic! Pupils learnt about Marcel‟s most famous mimes, such

as „The Cage‟ and „The Lion Tamer‟ and then had a go at re-creating them

for themselves! The work created was so good that the Golden Call-Out card was used during the day and members

of the Leadership Team came in and saw our work. Everyone who took part went to a great deal of effort and

looked fantastic! Please check out the photographs in the shared area-well done to you all!!

Brockington Under 14 Hockey Report

Over the past month, we have been playing in a tournament against five other schools at Leicester

Grammar. (Lutterworth, Leicester Grammar A, Leicester Grammar B, Kibworth A, Kibworth B). We

have trained on some Mondays and Tuesdays with Miss Wyeth, and have worked on perfecting our

skills to enable us to go and do well in these matches. Throughout matches and training sessions, we

have shown strength, skill, teamwork and commitment, and that‟s why we have been successful in many of our

games.

Our attacking players scored many terrific goals. They were supported by the midfield and defence players, as

they passed the ball into good spaces for the forwards to take a strike at goal. These shots weren‟t always the

hardest, but they were strategically placed beyond the reach of the oppositions goalie. Our midfield players

supported attack and defence in equal measure. They did a great job carrying the ball past the opposition to then

pass to the attackers. Called into defence, their tackling skills were strong when we were under pressure near the

goal. Defence had to make some careful passes to get the ball out of our half and onto the stick of one of our

players. Our goalie was the best goalie we could have had. She saved many goals that the defenders couldn‟t get

to, she was shouting support down the pitch so even the attackers could hear and was giving great advice which

helped us all to improve our game.

Everyone play particularly well and our training certainly paid off as we are now in the final! We are so pleased to

have come this far and we are hoping for a good outcome in the final. Well played everyone!

Molly Beazley (9L) and Caroline Peck (9L).

Sports Unlimited Funding

As part of Blaby and Harborough School Sports Partnership, we have received a vast amount of funding through

the “Sport Unlimited Scheme”. This term the funding was for Cheerleading, Street Dance and Yoga sessions.

The sessions have been delivered by expert external coaches for between 8 and 10 weeks. Yoga and Cheerleading

will continue after Christmas again. The other activity may be either Street Dance or Hula. Details are still to

be confirmed.

Sport Unlimited Activities (Street Dance) Gurgina Uppal (9G)

Since I have been doing Street Dance on Mondays, it has improved my confidence. We have also used a little

salsa which was funny because I don‟t do Salsa. So far we have finished 2 songs. The best thing about Street

Dance for me is that it has different types of dances that are fun! I tried Street Dance as I knew the teacher

before, when I went to Enderby Leisure Centre to do an event called Gal‟s Day. Leona made me feel confident

and has a very positive attitude to help you get through the dance moves. I would advise anyone to do dance as

it‟s something different.

Sports Unlimited Activities (Yoga) Amber Wilson (9N)

I have participated in a few yoga sessions. This relaxing and calming sport is not all what it seems, it uses

strength, stamina and suppleness. Although it comes across boring and (well embarrassing) it‟s not.

The teacher and girls are really nice and we all have a laugh. I would strongly advise anyone who is stressed or

had a bad day to join, otherwise just simply come along and enjoy the experience.

Time to REflect: News from the Religious Education Department What a fantastic term for the RE Department! With so much going on in these past weeks, it’s hard to sum

up the main achievements as there have been so many!

An “OUTSTANDING” result for the RE Department on Section 48 Inspection…

Firstly, I am very pleased that Brockington College was graded as “Outstanding” in all four areas of the Section 48 Inspection. This

includes achieving the highest possible grade for the RE Department which, according to the report, “makes an important and

significant contribution towards the distinctiveness and effectiveness of the school”. The report also stated that “The standard of

teaching is very good with RE lessons that are challenging and rigorous” and that “pupils speak positively of the relevance of the RE

curriculum in understanding Christianity, respecting other faiths and preparing them for the major issues of life.”

I am absolutely delighted to know that pupils are not only achieving in RE and enjoying lessons, but that they

understand the value of the subject in today’s society. Well done to the many classes and pupils involved in the

Inspection. Copies of the full report are available on the school website.

As well as this fabulous result, Brockington College is also leading the way on a larger scale, with members of staff

now working with national agencies and the local diocese on the new RE curriculum. More information will be

available on this in the New Year.

In the classroom…

Year 7 pupils have now finished their topic on Advent, and have learned all about this Christian festival and its links to

Old Testament prophecies about the coming of a Messiah as well as exploring the meaning and significance of some

well known Christmas symbols, such as Advent Wreaths and Christingles. In these last few days before Christmas,

they’ll be exploring how different Christians celebrate all around the world.

Year 8 pupils are about to start a new unit of work on Christianity, entitled “What would a church for all

Christians be like?” Rather than comparing differences between religions, pupils will explore the differences

within a religion. Lessons will include Q&A sessions with visitors from local churches as pupils evaluate the

idea of ecumenism, finding solutions for differences between denominations. There will also be the annual

competition for the best design of a modern ecumenical church!

Year 9 pupils have worked very hard this term and have completed their unit of work on ultimate questions and

miracles. Many pupils are now looking much deeper into religious issues and developing their GCSE level skills of

independent learning, debate and justification. Next term, pupils will begin the unit of work on Religion and Art,

looking at how people have used art to express spiritual beliefs and values for thousands of years!

Speaking of artwork, following the artwork assessment on Creation, the top 10 in Year 9 were chosen to display around school. The

winners were:

Amy Betteridge 9T, Naomi Day 9L, Vijyal Kotecha 9T, James Lyon 9N, Alex Morrisey 9O, Caroline Peck 9L, Katie Platt 9T,

Katie Mahon 9R, Nikhila Sedani 9G and Amber Willson 9N.

These pupils will each receive a prize and have their work entered into the National Spirited Arts Competition! Good luck guys!

Other activities:

Inter Faith Week

21st 27th November was this year’s National Inter-Faith Week. The Theme of the Week at Brockington was “Treat others how you

would like to be treated” and assemblies focused on this important life lesson.

Over 200 pupils also handed in their entries for the Inter-Faith Week quiz. Pupils who got all 10 answers correct were:

Kim Taylor 8N, Charlotte Quinn 7L, Chloe Balhatchet 7N, Ellie Marfleet 7K, Ishmael Bradford 7N, Sarah Cumiskay 7C, Orla

Canavan 7T, Natasha Pritchard 8N. All of whom will receive a runner-up prize.

The overall winner, drawn at random, to win the £5 gift voucher was Edan Pickering 7B.

Carol Service

The Brockington Annual Carol Service will take place in the last day of term. This year, there are over 60 pupils taking part in the

readings and choir. All pupils attend the Carol Service, which takes place at Enderby Parish Church, and is the perfect way to celebrate

the end of the term, and get in the Christmas spirit!

On that note, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all pupils, staff and parents/carers a Merry Christmas.

God bless, Mrs Mills

Further information...

Without a doubt, a visit or a visitor in the RE department can create memorable and challenging learning experiences. If you are of any

faith and would like to be more involved, perhaps bringing in photos, or offering your time in a Q&A session, please get in touch. After

all, other people are perhaps the greatest resource in RE! For any further information, please feel free to email or arrange an

appointment to discuss: [email protected]

Urgent Appeal from Leicester Animal Aid Leicester Animal Aid, your local animal rescue and re homing Centre are urgently appealing for the help of the local community. The registered Charity who is 54 years old this year has noticed a dramatic effect to the recent recession in 2010. Anne Martin, Chairperson of the Charity has sent out an urgent message to the community of Leicestershire appealing for help. Mrs Martin commented “As we approach the end of 2010 we are very concerned for the future of the animals that through no fault of their own find themselves without a home and are in desperate need of care and support” she continued “We are appealing for help from the public to help these abandoned and unwanted cats and dogs by donating just £1 a month which will help with essential vets bills, which amounted to £51,000 in 2009” Leicester Animal Aid, rescue and re home over 550 animals each year giving them a second chance and a brighter future. Trustees and supporters think that this downturn in donations during 2010 is an effect of the financial climate currently affecting many charities, but it has however put the animal rescue centre, which are based in Huncote in an extremely vulnerable position. Anyone wishing to help either monthly, a one off donation or even help by purchasing essential items like cat or dog food or cleaning items like washing powder or bleach can do so by either visiting the Centre on Forest Road, Huncote, Leicestershire, opening hours are 10.00 am to 2.30 pm every day. Or they can donate on line www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk. Further information on how to help can be obtained at [email protected] or call 01455 888257.

Christmas Cards for Recycling In the new year we will once again be collecting Christmas cards for recycling. There will be a huge

recycling bin for cards in the Courtyard from Thursday 6 January to Friday 28 January 2011.

Remember, recycling cards saves trees that absorb C02 – this is one way you can help

reduce the effects of global warming. Thank you very much for your help!

Brockington Eco-Schools.

Brockington Rainbow Stall! As part of the school‟s fundraising, the Charity Committee decided to run a whole-school ‘Rainbow Stall’ at the Christmas Fayre on behalf of pupils. Tutor groups across all three year groups worked very hard and brought in a fabulous array of coloured items! A big thank you to everyone who donated items to sell. In total, over £200 was raised for charity. Thanks also to those pupils who worked tirelessly for four hours on the stall (and Ellie‟s mum!). You were all amazing and your sales techniques were second to none – Alan Sugar watch out!
