Message from the Principal At Brockington, the Summer Term certainly reflects our college motto, „Learning to Live Life to The Full‟. We are building towards a whole-range of activities and events that sum up the essence of what we feel to be our purpose. On the academic front, all pupils are currently working towards their final National Curriculum and Attitude to Learning Levels that reflect their performance over the academic year. For the Year 9 pupils, these levels will be forwarded to their Upper School and will help to determine the classes in which they are placed. Early indications are that, as a college, we have had a terrific year in terms of progress and performance across all subjects. One example of this is the Year 9 Design and Technology GCSE module indicators which point towards 50% of Year 9 pupils gaining A* - C accreditation, with many pupils gaining A/A* grades. This is an amazing achievement for Year 9 pupils (and their members of staff), with two further years ahead of them at GCSE level. Not to be outdone, Year 7 and Year 8 levels are also very impressive and what they could achieve, with continued hard work, by the end of Year 9 is very exciting. From an extra-curricular viewpoint, there are so many opportunities provided by the staff that it is impossible to mention them all. I should mention the very successful college orchestra tour to Paris led by Mrs Shaw and supported by Mrs Goddard and Mr Fraser. There were so many positive comments made by members of the public and the staff themselves to the extent that one member of staff, who is a veteran of Brockington trips and residentials commented, “It was the best trip that I have ever been on and a pleasure to be with the pupils.” On the sporting front, the Year 7 Boys football team completed their unbeaten South Leicestershire League season and lifted the trophy. Currently, pupils from all year groups are competing in an array of athletics competitions and giving their best for the cause. Moving to drama and singing, the cast of the school production „The Little Shop of Horrors‟ are putting in the hours towards the two performances on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 June, which we hope you will support. On the spiritual front, we would be delighted if you can join us for a service to celebrate 200 years of Church of England Schools. This will take place in the College Hall on Thursday Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of the College, 9 June from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm and will feature performances by several pupils. Finally, we are building towards a variety of celebrations at the end of the academic year. There will be reward trips for all Year Groups, an opportunity for Year 8 to visit Lutterworth College, the College Sports Day and of course recognition and celebration for our current Year 9 as they prepare to leave the college. Message from the Principal

At Brockington, the Summer Term certainly reflects our college motto, „Learning to Live Life to The Full‟. We are building towards a whole-range of activities and events that sum up the essence of what we feel to be our purpose.

On the academic front, all pupils are currently working

towards their final National Curriculum and Attitude to

Learning Levels that reflect their performance over the

academic year. For the Year 9 pupils, these levels will be

forwarded to their Upper School and will help to determine

the classes in which they are placed. Early indications are

that, as a college, we have had a terrific year in terms of

progress and performance across all subjects. One example

of this is the Year 9 Design and Technology GCSE module

indicators which point towards 50% of Year 9 pupils gaining

A* - C accreditation, with many pupils gaining A/A* grades.

This is an amazing achievement for Year 9 pupils (and their

members of staff), with two further years ahead of them at

GCSE level. Not to be outdone, Year 7 and Year 8 levels are

also very impressive and what they could achieve, with

continued hard work, by the end of Year 9 is very exciting.

On the spiritual front, we would be delighted if you can join

us for a service to celebrate 200 years of Church of England

Schools. This will take place in the College Hall on Thursday

Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of the College,

9 June from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm and will feature

performances by several pupils.

Finally, we are building towards a variety of celebrations at

the end of the academic year. There will be reward trips

for all Year Groups, an opportunity for Year 8 to visit

Lutterworth College, the College Sports Day and of course

recognition and celebration for our current Year 9 as they

prepare to leave the college. I know that Miss Lewis is

already moving at pace to complete the Year 9 Yearbook

and that Mrs Dobbins has preparations well in hand for

Commemoration Evening, not to mention the Year 9

Prom.

HOLIDAY DATES FOR 2010-2011 Summer Term 2011 Mid-term break: 30 May to 3 June 2011 School closes: 14 July 2011

BROCKINGTON NEWS

Extra Bank Holiday 2011

Please be aware that college will be closed on Friday 15 July 2011 for the extra Bank Holiday in lieu of the Royal Wedding Bank Holiday. As we were on Easter holiday during the day of the Royal Wedding (Friday 29 April), we were originally granted a Bank Holiday on Tuesday 3 May. However, the majority of schools in our area decided to open on Tuesday 3 May and close on Friday 15 July instead so that pupil preparation for exams was not compromised. In an attempt to help as many parents as possible, with children at local schools, we also opened on Tuesday 3 May and will therefore be closed on Friday 15 July.

Lutterworth College Year 10

Uniform Change

Lutterworth College is consulting with Year 9

parents on uniform changes. Please visit

www.lc.leics.sch.uk to have your say.

As part of Lutterworth College’s continued drive to

raise attainment, achievement and promote an

outstanding ethos, we are currently consulting school

stakeholders to find out views on school uniform.

All Lutterworth college students in years 10 and 11

currently have a uniform. We feel that the existing

guidelines for uniform allows some students to ‘bend

the rules’ on what is acceptable. We therefore feel

that this uniform may no longer be as relevant as

when it was introduced several years ago.

Proposed changes would be designed to promote the

school house system, reduce the ambiguity in what

students can wear as well as giving students a sense of

belonging in what can appear to be a very big school.

Your help in completing this questionnaire is greatly

appreciated and we will use the results of these

findings in the continuing consultation for this

proposed change. Please visit http://

www.itslearning.com/test/r.aspx?XS=ysaggstttggg to

complete the survey.

As part of active citizenship here at Brockington, students are

encouraged to arrange and participate in an activity for the benefit of

others.

Our tutor group decided to raise funds for the charity LOROS through

two sponsored events – a sponsored silence, and a sponsored run, both

taking place on 12 May .

Students

completing

the run

were given

30 minutes

to run or

walk around

the school

running

track as

many times as possible. Students taking part in the

silence could not talk during the school day, with only three “chances”.

Students are collecting their sponsorship monies between now and half term, enabling

us to give our total raised to LOROS in June.

On behalf of 7G, thank you for your support.

BROCKINGTON CURRICULUM

Year 7 Rugby Tournament Report

On 30 March 2011, the Year 7 Brockington rugby team travelled off to Loughborough

RFC to compete in a County Rugby tournament. There were 18 teams participating. The

first match was against Hastings. The opposition was one try up at half time. They scored again in the

second half before Cameron Yates went in to score our only try. Hastings won 10-5.

Next Brockington went on to play Soar Valley and came away with a 20-0 win. Brockington then

proceeded into the next round and encountered Castle Donington. Mitchel Sandikci was our only try

scorer. It was a tough game and as a result it ended up 5-5.

The next game was against English Martyrs. This was a game Brockington had to win with a comfortable

margin. Brockington won 10-0 with tries from George Escott and Cameron Yates. However it wasn‟t

enough to proceed to the final as Castle Donnington beat English Martyrs 15 – 5. Although we had the

same number of points and were joint winners of the group we had scored 1 less try overall and Castle

Donnington went through to the final.

Man of the match went to Mitchel Sandikci and Cameron Yates.

Everyone gave 100% and everyone should feel proud!

E S Orton Rugby Tournament at Lancaster Boys 7 April 2011

The Year 8 team finished 5th out of 9 teams in this annual tournament held at The

Lancaster School.

In our first game we played Ashby Ivanhoe and drew 10 – 10. James Lee and James Taggar with 2

brilliant tries. In our second match against Soar Valley. We cruised to an easy 25 – 0 win with tries

from James Lee (3), Fabian Jackson and Aaron Geary. Despite this, Ashby proceeded to the top 3 by

scoring the first try in our match. We were left to contest 4th, 5th and 6th positions.

In our next match we scored 4 times to beat English Martyrs and then narrowly lost to Market

Bosworth 12 – 10. The prolific try scorer James Lee scoring both of them.

The Player of the tournament was Ollie Slingsby.

A very impressive team performance on a lovely hot April day.

Wells Sports Foundation Ambassador

pays visit to Brockington College

On Thursday 7 April, Wells Sports Foundation

Ambassador and Olympic Triathlon hopeful, Mark

Buckingham, visited Brockington College to give students

an insight into the life of an elite level athlete.

Mark, who is a full time triathlete based at Loughborough

University, visited the College to work with a selected

group of 120 Year 7 children (11-12 years old). Mark led

a physical activity session which involved the students

carrying out the transitions of a triathlon in a fun team

led activity workshop. Mark then went on to talk to the

group about how he got into sport, his transfer from

running to triathlon and his experiences as a full-time

triathlete including his training and diet.

Twenty-five year old Mark became part of the trigold

talent identification scheme in 2010 – the sporting X

Factor style scheme which fast tracks runners into

triathlon and is entirely funded by Wells Sports Foundation Chairman, Barrie Wells. Whilst abroad last summer, he

won his first triathlon 'Escape to Miami' by more than 5 minutes showing huge potential even before starting the

trigold programme and very recently claimed bronze at the National Decathlon Championships.

Mark commented, “Through my role as a Wells Sports Foundation Ambassador, I want to inspire children and help

them realise their potential. I would like to encourage these kids to identify with me, showing them that trying out

lots of different activities is the best way to do this. With the 2012 Olympics nearly a year away too, it is

important to promote how kids can get involved and Brockington College is specifically building lots of little

activities and schemes in order to do so, so it‟s great to be involved.”

The Wells Sports Foundation, whose Patron is World Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis, has been set up by Barrie

Wells to encourage greater participation of young people in sports. Through the Foundations Athletes 4 Schools

Scheme, schools and other various community organisations can apply for a visit from one of the 17 world class

athletes Barrie Wells is privately funding to aid their 2012 Olympic potential, who visit worthwhile grassroots

sports events to promote the many benefits of physical activity and to inspire more young people to get active.

Barrie commented. “Leicester is a massive hub for sport and we are proud to be able to support the great work

being done to contribute to a legacy of sport for the area. The Foundation has 6 Ambassadors based in

Loughborough, so the Athletes 4 Schools Scheme is really prominent in the Leicestershire and Rutland area. Our

Ambassadors are keen to get stuck into a range of events within as many schools as possible across the area,

particularly events that drive the values of the 2012 legacy into the classroom.”

Wells Sports Foundation

The Wells Sports Foundation has been set up by Barrie Wells to encourage greater participation of young people in

sports. Schools and other community organisations can apply for a visit from one of the 17 world class athletes in

various parts of the UK that Barrie Wells is privately funding to aid their 2012 Olympic potential. The athletes will

then visit worthwhile grassroots sports events to promote the many benefits of physical activity and to help young

people realise their sporting potential.

Kenya 2012 As the Kenya 2012 trip draws ever closer, the team are well under way with their

fundraising and preparations. The first team building session was a huge success. The

Team was split into three groups, each were given the task to create an advert to raise

awareness of the Kash4Kenya project. Each group were given a different format in which

to create their advert (e-magazine, TV & Radio). The groups worked together well, assigning roles, each taking

their turn at leading sections of the session and completing tasks co-operatively. They produced some fantastic

pieces of work, which can be viewed on our new website: www.kash4kenya.com, you can also find out up to date

information about the project, our activities and the fundraising taking place.

Over the next 11 months the team have the huge task of raising £40,000 to enable them to travel and complete

vital building and renovation work within our two twinned schools, Mtwapa Academy and Sagail Nursery. They are

currently standing at around £2,000 raised so far and have lots of ideas and plans for the coming months to take

them ever closer to their target. The team have secured a huge amount of support from Asda for the project and

look forward to working with them on various projects over the coming months. Their support will not only help

the team to raise awareness of the project, but will also give them opportunity for lots of money to be raised!

If you see the Kash4Kenya Team out in the community please continue to support us. For more information or if

you think you can help us in our fundraising efforts please contact us at [email protected] or visit

our website at www.kash4kenya.com

Meal Aid The „Meal Aid‟ project is going well, so far we have raised £550.00 which pays for 15 students at Sagail Nursery

School in Mombasa to have food provided for them every day at school. This is in essence the only meal they will

eat within a day. This is a really important project and so we need to make sure we keep up our efforts to make

sure the project can continue. Make sure you ask the canteen staff to „Meal Aid‟ your purchases at break and

lunch, every 2p donated counts!

We also have our alternative gift vouchers. Vouchers cost £1.00, you also receive an information certificate

outlining what the project is. The whole amount of the money donated goes directly to the „Meal Aid‟ Fund, and

your money really does make a difference. The vouchers are available all year round and make a nice alternative

present! For more information contact the school office or email at [email protected].

PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE FOR PUPILS SCHEME ARRANGED WITH ZURICH MUNICIPAL INSURANCE CO.

It is often assumed by parents that if an accident occurs at school, the school can be held responsible and that financial compensation will therefore be made. It cannot be emphasised too strongly that the liability of the school is strictly limited to cases where there is proven evidence of negligence. In the vast majority of cases, the injuries sustained are minor and the circumstances of the accident will reveal no evidence at all of negligence on the part of the school. There are, however, some accidents which can have long term consequences or result in some form of permanent disability but still without any evidence of negligence on the part of the school. The advantage of a personal accident policy therefore, is that whilst in no way preventing further action to seek damages in cases where negligence is alleged, payments under the policy are made on the basis of the injuries sustained and are not conditional on proving liability. In order to provide parents with the opportunity of arranging appropriate insurance cover at a very competitive cost, the Local Authority has arranged a scheme with Zurich Municipal Insurance Co. at a cost of only £12.00 per year (including tax and administration). The policy runs from 1 September to 31 August of the ensuing year and provides cover for 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and so is not limited to just when children are at school. If you are interested in arranging such cover for your child, Summary of Cover Sheets and Application Forms can be obtained from the school . Completed forms should then be returned to the school accompanied by a cheque for £12.00 made payable to the school. Confirmation of cover together with a copy of the full policy will subsequently be forwarded to you by Insurance Team via the school. Please note that if you wish to arrange cover for your child but he/she is transferring to another school from September, it will be necessary to make contact with the new school/college to make the necessary arrangements, assuming that the school is participating in the scheme.

What is the BB19 bus:-

The bus will provide facilities so that the Police and Youth Work Team can work with young people anywhere with or without a youth centre nearby. The mobility of the team means that it can respond easily to reports of anti social behavior. Police, Fire and Youth Offending services will be able to make use of the bus as well as the council’s benefits, housing, environmental health and sports development teams. The bus is kitted out with media equipment including computers, a flat screen TV, gaming consoles and DJ equipment. The detached youth work project aims to work in remote rural areas with vulnerable young people primarily aged between 11yrs-19yrs. The mobile youth project works with other organisations that work with young people. The purple bus will be used to take advice on sexual health, smoking, drugs, alcohol, bullying and anti-social behaviour to youngsters across Blaby district. The bus will be used for a range of activities including sport and support and discussions around relevant issues.
