We will brief parents/carers on the current curriculum and the latest government recommendations, then we would like to hear your views about the possible changes we could make. I was incredibly proud of all pupils during our Remembrance Service on Friday 11 November. Thomas Penny from

Year 10 played both ‘The Last Post’ and the ‘Reveille’ superbly well, whilst pupils and members of staff stood shoulder to

shoulder in complete silence as a sign of respect for those that have died or have been injured in the service of the

country.

Year 7 pupils visited Caythorpe Court en masse recently as part of a team building residential experience. They were

involved in a whole series of outdoor pursuit experiences and I am sure will have gained much from the experience. My

thanks to Mrs Wright (Head of Year 7) for leading the trip and to the form tutors and other members of staff for taking

part in the trip. I know that they all slept soundly on the evening that the trip returned.

Another proud moment and first for Brockington occurred last week with the awarding of our first ever GCSE Certificates

to the Year 11 pupils that sat GCSE core science exams in the summer term. As you will be aware, results were extremely

pleasing and it was lovely to be able to take the time, with pupils and parents, to celebrate success. My thanks to

Carolyn Lewis (Director of Education for the Diocese) and Russell Andrews (Chair of Governors) for also attending.

Equally, thank you to Mrs Dobbins and Mrs Carr for organising the event.

The path to success for Year 11 pupils now involves the preparation for and sitting of their mock exams in December.

They then have only one full term remaining at Brockington College, before their GCSE exams in the summer term. They

need your full support as parents/carers going forwards and you will have to gauge what this involves. For some it will

require some serious conversations about revising and fulfilling potential, whilst for others it may comprise support in

helping your child to stay calm and find ways to relax. If you need our advice on how to support your child in what is a

very stressful period for them, please do not hesitate to ask. In the meantime, please encourage them to revise for the

exams and to attend after-school revision sessions.

As always, all parents/carers are invited to attend our next Parents’ Forum Meeting, which is on Thursday 24 November

at 6.30 pm. The topic for discussion on this occasion is the school curriculum. We will brief parents/carers on the

Remembrance Service

The Last Post

On Friday 11 November 2016 at 11.00 am we held our annual Remembrance Service. The whole school respectfully gathered in the Courtyard as words were

read, The Last Post played and a minute’s silence was held to remember.

This year Thomas Penny (10L) played ‘The Last Post’, which has become a Brockington tradition, to a larger audience due to our increase in college numbers. A recording of this can be viewed on the following link http://bit.ly/2fktmFU

Poppy Appeal

Thank you to all the pupils and staff who bought poppies to wear and raised £488.30 for The Royal British Legion.

Year 11 Science GCSE Presentation Evening

A presentation evening was held on Wednesday 16 November for Year 11 students that took their core science GCSE in the summer.

Speeches were given by: Russell Andrews, Chair of Governors; Carolyn Lewis, Director of Education at the Diocese; Miss Parmar, Head of Science and Mr Southall. All students received their first ever GSCE certificate and were warmly congratulated on their brilliant achievement in front of family and friends.

Well done everyone! It was lovely to see such recognition of all your hard work. Mrs Carr

Voice It We have been running our successful ‘Voice It’ system since 2012 and will continue again this year. ‘Voice It’ was launched after an Anti-Bullying Survey that we completed showed that students felt that it was not easy to register a concern or report bullying to adults, both at home and school. One reason for this was that they did not feel brave enough to have the conversations face to face and felt it a very daunting idea to have to sit and discuss their worries. Our system can be anonymous or students can leave names. It makes it easier for pupils to log concerns about bullying, anti-social behaviour and any other concerns they may have in and around the college. The system has proven to be highly effective and is used on a regular basis. Students can use the ‘Voice It” boxes outside of the Pastoral Office or in the library, alternatively they can use the online form accessed through the school website. Their concerns are then passed to the relevant Head of Year and Pastoral Manager to deal with and resolve the issues.

Eight Peer Issues were reported and dealt with by the Head of Year/Pastoral Manager

To find out more or log a concern, please visit the school website or the following link: http://goo.gl/j4Sl4n

SelfieCop App Sexting is a modern day issue which, unfortunately, is increasingly becoming the norm amongst young adults. It is a storm of technology and hormones. Children, as we know, are impulsive and do not always understand that photos can live forever. SelfieCop is a free app (currently) that aims to protect children from the dangers of sexting and selfies by teaching them to STOP-&-THINK before sharing a photo or video. SelfieCop is aimed at kids aged from about 7 to 15, although for some older children it has less of an impact as they tend to be too technically knowledgeable. The app challenges children before they upload images and it also emails parents/carers a copy of photos or videos taken on their child's smartphone. The app is compatible with both android phones (but not iPhones currently) and a range of popular social networking apps, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. If you wish to install SelfieCop, you must involve your child by explaining its benefits and asking for their consent. More information about SelfieCop can be found at:- www.selfiecop.com Also on the Brockington website are links as detailed below:- SelfieCop - Parents https://goo.gl/xblHzU SelfieCop – Organisations https://goo.gl/wsfNGw

Introduction from the Principal News

RS News Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas

Child’ During the last few weeks each form has been working together to create at last one Christmas shoebox for Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas

Child’. Some forms have chosen to donate food to local foodbanks in our area. We would like to say a huge thank you to the pupils, form tutors and Enderby Parish Church for all working

together to produce such amazing gifts for those less fortunate. A form in each year group has been selected to win a film week (watch a film during form time for the week) to acknowledge their compassion and effort to assist those in need. The winning forms were: 7K, 8C, 9R, 10K and 11L

Leicestershire’s Largest

Careers Speed

Networking Event

On Friday 4 November 2016 some lucky Year 9 pupils were

able to attend the largest Careers Speed Networking event in Leicestershire. The day involved a talk on career paths and opportunities available in Leicestershire including a speech by

Nicky Morgan; speed networking in which pupils had six minutes with a range of different employers; a panel discussion and an inspirational talk from The Apprentice’s 2015 Mergim Butaja.

A great day was had by all! Mr Patel, Mrs McKenzie and Ms Cottis

to get to know the charity and its workers, as

well as play games, do crafts and spend time

socialising. This is a free facility and pupils

collect a ticket from Mrs McKenzie for their place

on the bus as numbers are limited. There was

plenty of fun going on with dancing outside the bus with the use of the Xbox

and dancing games.

Thanks to Reality and Mike

McAllister for providing

this opportunity for our

pupils.

Mrs McKenzie

Changes of the Chair of Governors are rare events at Brockington College. My two predecessors, Gary Spencer

and Richard Dunnett both did a fantastic job and clocked up well into the teens of years between them. As I take

on the role it feels like we are entering a momentous year as we work as a school community towards our first full

set of GCSE results next summer. An important step along the way towards that significant milestone occurred

when the college held its science GSCE presentation evening on Wednesday 15 November and it was very moving

to be part of making history at the college – so many beaming students and proud parents – a foretaste of what

I’m sure will be an even bigger celebration next autumn.

I joined the governing board in 2004, initially as a parent governor and subsequently as a church foundation

governor, and it’s fair to say that the college has changed beyond recognition since then, with the new building,

academy status and the addition of Years 10 and 11. But I know that the Senior Leadership Team and staff under

Chris Southall, and the governors, are determined not to settle and rest for what we’ve already achieved. At the

start of this term, I spoke to staff about my aspiration that Brockington builds upon its growing reputation of a

local beacon of excellence and continues to spread its influence and impact across the region. And at the heart of

this will be the work that the college does with all students to ensure that they achieve to their highest potential,

and the partnership it forges with parents and carers. Thank you for all that you are doing to work with us.

Russell Andrews, Chair of Governors

Non-Uniform Day Donation for Rutland Guide Dogs

A big thank you to all pupils and staff who raised money on our most recent non-uniform day on 14 October 2016 to raise money for the Leicestershire and Rutland Guide Dog Fundraising Committee. We raised £1,157.00 for a great cause and our Compassion Committee pupils handed over the cheque to Mrs Holt who works voluntarily for a great charity. Thank you to Sarah’s daughter, Emma Holt, for asking Brockington to help raise money.

Harvest Festival Service

The Year 7 Brockington pupils attended a Harvest Service at Enderby Parish Church on Friday 14 October. Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 pupils led the service, which involved the Vocal Group performing the songs and a performance exploring the Christian message of Harvest Festival

Youth Club (All Years) Youth Club for all years - Open every day after school from 3.10 pm to 4.30 pm (not on Friday) in Room 026. This is a space for pupils to sit and socialise, get their homework and revision done with the use of revision guides for all subject areas and the help of a member of staff, as well as play games on the X Box, listen to music and use the Ipads.

Blaby District Council Achievement Awards 2016

On Thursday 29 September, Simran Sangherra (11I) attended an evening of celebration at the Marriott Hotel to honour the unsung heroes of Blaby District, where she was runner-up in the category of Young Achiever. Simran was nominated by Jane McCormack as an excellent example of someone who is making a positive difference to her local community. Simran joined the new Blaby District Youth Council in 2015 and was elected as Chair in September by her peers. She ensures that the Youth Council works as a team and is engaged in projects to help young people and the community. In February 2016, she became a member of the UK Youth Parliament where her role is to positively represent the views of children and young people in her local authority. She recently attended a House of Commons Sitting in London and took part in a debate chaired by the Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow MP. Members of the UK Youth Parliament are the only group, other than MPs, to sit on the green benches, so this was a unique opportunity. We would like to congratulate Simran on her achievement and for being a role model for us all, by demonstrating her commitment towards learning to live life to the full.

Thank you to all our wonderful competitors who came to take part in The Young Chef Competition. This year’s winner was Megan Walls (9C) who really proved her skills to the four judges Tony Parris (Local Chef and Patron for Winning Student), Richard Kilner (President), Vanessa Cookson (Treasurer) and Linda May (Youth Service). Megan produced her own pasta, bread and chocolate torte, they all tasted amazing. Megan will be training and taking part in professional catering with Tony. We have to mention Ria Mackness who was runner-up, Toby Tully who wowed us with the best pudding ever, Joseph Matthews whose lamb dish is now on a number of local menus and we can never forget the amazing spread of USA dining from Isabella Rawlinson-Matthews. We look forward to our local finals early next year. Mrs F Clarke

Trips

Visit to Iceland

Visit to Caythorpe Court

On Wednesday 9 November at 10.00 am

107 Year 7 students left Brockington

College for a three day residential trip to

PGL’s Caythorpe Court, near Grantham.

The day started wet and cold, luckily the

rain stopped by the time we arrived at

Caythorpe!

We settled into our rooms, ate our packed lunches

and wrapped up warm ready for the afternoon

activities!

Over the three days, the group took part in archery, abseiling, climbing, sensory trails and

orienteering, to name a few activities. Our final evening was spent ‘getting down’ at the disco.

The students were fabulous and

the PGL staff commented on how

great they were, which made me

very proud to be Head of Year 7.

Mrs C Wright

Head of Year 7

On 29 September forty nine Year 11 pupils and five members of staff set off for four days in Iceland. Whilst away we had the swim of a lifetime in the Blue Lagoon where the water is a very pleasant 38 oC. We then travelled to the hot springs for a taster of the geothermal power that Iceland uses.

On day two we did the South Shore Adventure, walking behind waterfalls, exploring the features of the black beach, walking up to a glacier and watching a mini documentary of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption being a couple of highlights.

On day three we had a tour of Hellisheioi geothermal power station where we learnt about how Iceland utilizes its natural resource. From here we travelled to the Geysir geothermal area, a highlight of the trip for many pupils! We visited Þingvellir National Park, a site of tectonic activity as the North American and Eurasian plates are moving apart making Iceland 2 cm bigger each year! This is also the site of the world’s first democratic parliament founded in 930.

There were a lot of early starts but it is safe to say we fitted a lot in to a short trip. The pupils clearly loved learning about the features of Iceland, their pictures speak for themselves!

Here at Brockington College, we recognise the importance that learning to play a musical instrument can have on a young adult. It can help to promote a sense of self-discipline, self-esteem and enhance self-expression/creativity. We, therefore, encourage as many pupils as possible to start to learn a musical instrument. If you are interested in booking lessons for your child, please contact the teacher of the instrument you are interested in. They will then send out their information and contracts in order to start lessons with them. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Styles at the school on 0116 286 3722 or via email [email protected]
