Over the past few years we have

witnessed growth in Saint Johns Retail,

    Tourism and Hospitality sectors. This

growth has been tremendous and these

sectors are contributing to the vibrancy,

    diversity, and entrepreneurial success of

Saint John. From new boutiques to well

    established specialty stores to Canada-

wide retailers, Saint John is well on itsway to becoming a retail destination! With

a rapidly growing cruise industry and new

adventures like the zip-line and the

potential for our region to become North

Americas first Geopark, the Saint John

region is becoming a tourist destination

where people of all ages can stay

    comfortably and enjoy culinary delights.

    While Retail, Hospitality and Tourism

are the focus for this issue, I would like

to take the opportunity to highlight sectors

that have also seen success anddemonstrate the overall positive growth

Saint John has seen and continues to see

as we enter the 3rd quarter of 2010.

In the Energy sector we have seen great

change from the potential sale of NB

Power to the new, proposed changes in

the regulatory system. In both instances

the Saint John Board of Trade has been

present, most recently with a submission

on the proposed regulatory system changes

which can be viewed on our website. We

have also participated in the Department

of Energys Ignition Summit and theAtlantica Centre for Energys dialogue

    sessions.

Infrastructure has seen the water system

report outlining a schedule for refurbishing

the citys water system presented and

accepted by Common Council. The Saint

John Board of Trade will continue to

support the changes necessary to ensure

our members and the community have

access to safe, reliable water at a fiscally

    responsible pace.

This month sees the inaugural class of

    the new Dalhousie medical education

program at Tucker Park begin their

    educational studies. The potential future

growth of the Knowledge Cluster and

    investment in Research and Development

is great. We as a Board of Trade will

continue to work with the institutions and

like minded groups to support this sector

and the synergies that surround it.

In the Transportation sector work has

commenced on the Harbour Bridge, andthe twinning of Route 1 from Saint John

to St. Stephen. Work has continued to

progress on the One Mile Highway

    Interchange and the Welsford Bypass.

People travel for many reasons using

various modes of transport. Our airport

and port, in addition to our roads, are

growing and we will continue to support

them as they are both crucial to attracting

business and investment in our region.

Last month the airport released its

Strategic Plan and included in this issueof Currents, we have a brief synopsis on

the economic impact of the airport on our

    City and region.

    Growth and success in energy,

    infrastructure, education, and

transportation will help draw new people

to Saint John. It is the Retail, Tourism and

Hospitality sectors that will ensure they

enjoy their stay and return if not as new

Saint Johners, then as frequent visitors!

There isnt a magic solution to theeconomic development strategy for cities,

or for the particular issues faced by a

small-medium sized city in the middle of

    urban density and economic challenges.

What is important to remember is the

need to stay focused on the basics, which

    are education, health, recreation and

quality of life. At every level, increasing

the value-added in everything we do,

    lifestyle amenities, infrastructure and

making the city a beautiful, enjoyable,

surprisingly pleasant experience willdetermine our growth rate.

    The urban economist Richard Florida

advocates the importance of being a

progressive, open, enjoyable city is to be

able to attract a diversity of employers

and key workers as well as offering a

    livable environment that spurs creativity,

pride and investment. As a result, every

city now wants to be a centre of progress,

    promoting the connection between a

vigorous arts and cultural life while

    encouraging economic and community

health. The competition for being unique

    and progressive is getting intense.

How can a city differentiate itself? The

most successful city of the 21st century

will be much more than sidewalk

cappuccinos and film festivals. It will be

a centre driven by city government and

    private enterprise, through consultation,

    that most imaginatively, efficiently and

    effectively provides needed services,

    infrastructure and a lifestyle.

Essentially, it is about focusing on the

    basics;

Flexibility - the ability to see thingsdifferently and act accordingly

Innovation - the ability to apply an

    original solution to a long-standing

    problem

    Big picture thinking - understanding

    the difference between strategic versus

    tactical approaches

Leadership - the ability to set direction

    for the whole

    Saint John Waterfront Development

(SJWD) wants to be a part of the overall

design and progress of the City of SaintJohn. With the support of city government

and armed with public input SJWD is

moving forward with actions that can and

will make Saint John a great City. Some

    of the recent actions include;

Coast Guard Site - We are in the final

stages of land acquisition regarding the

Canadian Coast Guard site. As well,

    negotiations are ongoing with the

Hardman Group Ltd. in relation to a

    development agreement.

Reversing Rapids Master Plan -SJWD received final approval from

Common Council in June 2010 and we

    are now proceeding with finalizing

    development plans for project

    commencement in 2011.

    Partridge Island - Initial development

plans have been presented to several

    community groups with very favorable

response. Development of the island will

be determined over the next 12 months

    with continued public input and

    consultation.

    Saint John Waterfront

    Development

Boardwalk Refurbishment - Phase IIis proceeding with numerous

    improvements to the boardwalk lighting,

    courtyard and surrounding area

    landscaping and boardwalk related

    amenities including benches, bicycle

    racks, plank replacement, lighthouses

    repainted and more.

    Harbour Passage - Although Harbour

    Bridge construction continues, the much

utilized Passage walkway is now open

from Market Square Boardwalk to Fort

LaTour. It may be a short walk (1.2km)but it is packed with several viewpoints,

    informative signage and beautiful rest

    areas.

    Stonehammer - The excitement is

building. The Stonehammer team and the

City of Saint John are preparing for a

    site evaluation by two international

    representatives from the Global Geopark

    Network regarding a UNESCO supported

    designation. Dr. Patrick McKeever

    (Ireland) and Ms. Claudia Eckhardt

(Germany) will be in the Saint John regionin late August/September for a 4 day visit.

When successful, this will be the first

    Geopark designation in North America.

On behalf of the Regional Development

    Corporation, Saint John Waterfront

Development is the governing body for

    the Stonehammer Geological Project until

such time as the Global Geopark Network

    designation is awarded and the

    organization implements its own

    governance model.

As the inaugural chair of Saint John

Destination Marketing Inc., and on behalf

of the newly appointed board of directors,

I am very pleased and excited to be

providing this update on the upcoming

and much anticipated launch of the newly

    created Destination Marketing

    Organization.

The development of this new model of

destination marketing has been lead jointly

by the City of Saint John and the Saint

John Hotel Association for the past several

    years. This industry-municipal partnership

model was designed to improve the citys

    tourism promotion services and

specifically place Saint John in a more

    competitive position in the tourism

    industry in Atlantic Canada.

    More recently, the organization has

taken its first major step forward with the

appointment of the 11 member Board of

Directors and the hiring of its inaugural

    Executive Director, Ross Jefferson.

Throughout this past summer, the primary

focus of the Board of Directors has been

on the establishment of the foundational

    aspects of the organization, from

    governance and incorporation, to the

    organizational bylaws and the basic

    organizational and administrative setup

of the corporation. With the initial five

year funding contracts now being finalized

with both of the founding members, the

City of Saint John and Saint John Hotel

Association we will be immediately hiring

our new staff and officially launching our

    operations.

With this launch, our new organization

will officially take over all of the

    destination marketing services from the

City of Saint John including the staffi

and management of the citys five tour

    information bureaus. Our primary

objectives will include efforts to incre

the overall visitation to Saint John in k

tourism markets, to extend the averag

visitors length of stay in the region, t

    promote and encourage repeat visitati

and to create an image of Saint John a

    year round tourism destination.

We have a great deal of work plann

ahead and we are eager to get started. W

are also looking forward to soliciting inp

and support from all of our industry

members and with the City of Saint Jo

    on this very important work.

In this issue of Currents you will learn

some interesting facts about some of the

retailers and restaurants in our great City.

Hopefully what you learn will result in

you visiting one of these stores or

    restaurants and making a purchase,

perhaps for the very first time. This is how

you, and indeed all of us, can have a

    positive impact on our City.

More consumer spending in Saint John

will definitely help local retailers grow

    their businesses and create more

employment, and it will also attract new

stores to our community. You have no

doubt heard the saying that a crowd will

attract a crowd; well viable retail will

    attract more retail!

    Keep The

    Momentum Going

We have seen tremendous growth in

    retail development and our hospitality

industry in the last few years, but we must

keep the momentum going. Retail Forum

members are hearing stories about more

shoppers being seen in our City from out

of town, but we need more of them. And

we need more of our local citizens in our

    stores and restaurants.

When we have a choice to buy locally,

out of town or on-line think of the positive

impact it would have if that purchase was

    made locally.

    Chipman Hill Suites was conceived

in 1994 by Susan Fullerton when she

    purchased two derelict buildings at

9 and 5 Chipman Hill at a property

tax sale. These buildings had survivedthe Great Saint John Fire of 1877,

    and had narrowly escaped the

wreckers ball just over a century

later. They had been vacant for

    decades.

They were restored and made into

    corporate accommodation. The

    response from the business

    community was extremely positive,

    and from these small beginnings,

more buildings and suites were added

and today, Chipman Hill Suites offers

110 suites in 12 historic uptown

    buildings. The most recent and

certainly most visible project is the

former Pratt residence at the corner

of Chipman Hill and Union Streets.

There are sixteen suites in this

    sprawling brick building, and tours

are available by chance or by

    appointment. It is renting now.

All of the Chipman Hill Suites

have a minimum of a fully equipped

kitchenette, and many have a full

kitchen with dishwasher. Each suitehas a private ensuite bathroom, and

    includes maid service (daily or

    weekly), all utilities, expanded cable

TV, wireless high speed internet and

paper and soap products. There is

onsite laundry in each building with

soap provided. All the Chipman Hill

    Suites buildings are totally non-

    smoking. Rentals are available daily,

    weekly and monthly.

    Retail Tourism Hospitality

In the fall of 2009, the Saint John

Airport Inc Board of Directors with the

support of its management team and an

    outside consultant (InterVistas) initiated

the development of a 2010-2015 Strategic

Plan. This effort has now been completed

with a rollout to stakeholders initiated in

    July and continuing into September.

The plan aims to leverage our local

strengths to promote growth at the Airport

and within the region that it serves from

Sussex, the KV, via Saint John and Grand

Bay-Westfield, all the way to St Stephen

and the Fundy Isles. As such, we wish to

    take advantage of being:

    home to major corporations

    an energy hub/cluster

    multimodal transportation hub (ie marine,

    rail, road, and air)

in close proximity to the US border and

    market

a prime location for land development

The Strategic Plan is aimed at growth

and consists of a 4 Pillar Approach :

Pillar #1 - Broadening Air Service

The enhancement of air service optionsthrough an integrated community sales

pitch, story, and focused approach. In

essence, the Airport cannot do this on its

own and needs to involve community

stakeholders and leaders. Air carriers are

seeking profitable routes and as a

community we need to convince them that

Saint John can provide these. We must

also work in partnership with other airports

to seek out new routes and ensure their

    success. Achieving successful outcomes

will only be possible by mobilizing localenthusiasm and support via a community

    based Air Service Development

Committee that will be put in place to

    assist with this initiative (Anyone

    interested?)

Pillar #2 - Diversification of Revenue

    Stream

There is also an opportunity to take

advantage of our location to establish new

revenue streams and make us less

dependent on passenger and air carrier

fees. The physical location of the Airport,

and its proximity to the highway and

industrial park systems, make it a prime

    connection point, link and development

opportunity, with the right vision. To kick

start this effort, the SJAI is investing in a

    Business Development Director to identify

    and develop these diversification

    opportunities and work with key

stakeholders to make them a reality.

    Pillar # 3 - Driving Community

    Ownership

Also identified as an opportunity and

challenge is the need to further develop

    the regional communitys sense of

ownership of the airport. This can

    translate into increased ridership through

the Airport as well as an enhanced sense

of achievement as services grow and new

routes are implemented. Routes can only

be successful if the airlines view them as

profitable and to be profitable require

    strong community support. Unique

    destinations can also help attract

passengers from the surrounding area. TheSJAI is investing in a new Director of

    Marketing and Communications to focus

on developing our brand, and enhancing

the regional support of the airport, as well

as its sense of ownership and community

    engagement.

    Pillar # 4 - Enhancing Facilities and

    Infrastructure

To ensure long term growth, the

necessary infrastructure needs to be in

place to support air related and other

airport based activities. As such, the

    infrastructure needs to complement the

growth plans and long term vision for the

airport. The SJAI wishes to ensure that

any development can also provide a sense

of place and consistent message to the

airport users and traveling public. This is

necessary to ensure the success of the

other strategic pillars and as such, the

intent is to invest in a combination of

    growth and operational infrastructure that

    support the end goals.

In summary, the status quo is no longer

an option. If the Saint John Airport

wishes to guarantee long term growth and

increased air service, it is necessary to

focus on achieving the strategic plan

initiatives, ensuring a viable future where

the regional community is engaged and

committed to this same success. The

airport trying to do it alone limits our

success. Rather an aligned and focused

effort with community and stakeholdersupport is the only solution. Your

participation in this new direction is not

    only solicited but necessary.

Dont let the flight leave without

younow is the time to get your boarding

    pass!

With technology and the web now fully

embeded in most of our daily lives, recent

research has shown that customers now

find access to free wi-fi in a cafe or

restaurant as important as a clean

washroom and friendly service. A recent

study by American Airlines showed that

for the business traveler (and the traveler

in general, really), Wi-Fi is so important

that some 47% of frequent travelers

responded that Wi-Fi was the "most

    important airport amenity, outscoring basic

travels needs such as food by nearly 30

    percentage points."

Freespots is the Wi-Fi Strategy for the

    Saint John Community that encourages

the growth of wi-fi hotspots throughout

the city. By encouraging businesses and

property owners to invest in this relatively

low cost service, the community benefits

    by creating an attractive business,

    hospitality and tourism environment that

enables citizens and visitors to access the

web in any of the participating

    establishments. Since the programs

inception more than 50 local businesses

have registered to become a Freespot to

the delight of their customers throughout

    the community.

Becoming a Freespot is easy! Any

business is eligible as long as they provide

    Business Immigrant

    Mentorship Program

    The Business Immigrant Mentorship

    Program offers immigrant entrepreneurs

in the Saint John Community the

opportunity to meet with, learn from, and

engage in dialogue with established local

business people. The program is made

possible by the support and funding of

    the Government of New Brunswicks

    Population Growth Secretariat in

    partnership with Enterprise Saint John.

    Additional community partners include

the Saint John Board of Trade, the Saint

    John Multicultural and Newcomers

Resource Centre, and the Saint John

YMCA Settlement Services. The program follows the principles of

    a mentor-mentee relationship. An

    experienced member of the local

    business/professional community (mentor)

will be matched with an immigrant

    entrepreneur (mentee). Business

immigrants will benefit greatly by the

interactions and lasting bonds formed with

people already solidly established in the

business community. They will learn the

processes involved with setting up a

business, be introduced to a professionalnetwork, and how best to integrate into

the local business community. To be

    accepted into the program, immigrants

must either currently be involved with a

business or have a developed business

plan and be in the final stages prior to

    business launch.

    Mentors will also benefit from

    establishing relationships with newcomers.

They will gain professional insight and

knowledge of best practices from the

mentees with whom they are matched.

    The program provides orientation and

training for mentors and mentees. The

time demands are reasonable and flexible,

amounting, on average, to only one hour

per week over the six month programduration.

    The Program offers one-on-one

    mentoring, orientation and training and

some group and networking activities for

immigrant entrepreneurs in the Saint John

area who are ready to start or grow a

business. The program is being run in two

cohorts, the first from July to December

2010 and the second from September

    2010-February 2011.

    Big Splash Thank You

In April 2009, the Saint John

    Learning Exchange and Vibrant

    Communities Saint John partnered

    with employers, government, and

    educational institutions to support

    an innovative training approach

    based on employer-specific

essential skills. A year and a half

    later, 13 employers have

participated - seven of which have

kept their new employees - and 19

    individuals have gone through the

    program.

    The program, funded by the

    Department of Post-Secondary

    Education, Training and Labour,

builds on the skills of individuals

    through short-term workplace

    essential skills training, delivered

    by the Saint John Learning

    Exchange. Employers benefit from

reductions in the cost and risk of

    bringing on new employees, as

    well as increased productivity.
