How do plants reproduce asexually?
Lesson Review
Write true if the statement is true. If the statement is false, change the underlined term to
make the statement true. ____________________ 1. Reproduction without the joining of male and female sex cells is sexual
reproduction.
____________________ 2. An onion is an example of a tuber.
____________________ 3. One type of sexual reproduction in plants is called vegetative propagation.
____________________ 4. Vegetative propagation uses seeds of plants to grow new plants.
____________________ 5. New plants that grow from vegetative propagation are different from the parent
plant.

6. Leaves and flowers of some plants can be cut to start the growth of a new plant. Skill Challenge
Skills: identifying, analyzing, inferring
Study the drawings below. Then, answer the questions that follow.
1. Identify each plant structure as a tuber, a bulb, or neither. Write your answers on the lettered lines.

Seed dispersal Enrichment Activity
Skills: inferring, applying concepts, predicting
New plants form from seeds released by parent plants. Survival of a plant species is dependent upon the dispersal of
parent plant seeds. Many plant seeds have characteristics that help in their dispersal. Wind, water, and animals all
help seeds to be dispersed.
PART A Look at the plant seeds below. Identify the trait of the plant seed that helps in
its dispersal. Predict how the seed is dispersed.

PART B Read the following passage. Then, answer the questions that follow.
Tomato Plant
Red, juicy tomatoes are the fruit of the tomato plant. It is believed that tomatoes grew naturally
in South America. Spanish priests visiting South America probably brought the seeds of these
plants back with them to Europe. During the 1500s, tomatoes were grown as food in Spain and
Italy. Years later, European explorers brought the seeds of these plants with them on voyages to
America. Today, the United States produces more tomatoes than any other country.
1. How did humans aid the dispersal of tomato seeds? ____________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Suppose that Spanish priests had never taken tomato seeds back to Europe. What effect could this have had on
U.S. farms today?

Fertilizers Enrichment Activity
Skills: classifying, interpreting, graphing, applying definitions
There are two main kinds of fertilizers. Fertilizers are either mineral fertilizers or organic fertilizers.
PART A Use a dictionary to find the meanings of the words mineral and organic.
Write the definitions in the spaces provided. Then, classify each of the following
fertilizers as mineral or organic. Write M for mineral or O for organic.
1. mineral: ___________________________________________________________________________________

10. aqua ammonia
PART B
Fertilizers are graded. The first number is the percentage of nitrogen (N), the second
number is the percentage of phosphoric acid (PA), and the third number is the
percentage of potash (P). Use the information below each picture about the
percentage of nutrients in fertilizers to make a pictograph (represent each using their
symbols) in the spaces on the bags provided.
