Bareclona Jan explosion of the boiler of a spinning mill near Manresa Saturday destroyed half the village of Puente de Vilumara The hospital at Manresa is filled with the injured Sixteen mutilated bodies of working people buried in the debris have been recovered These include the manager of the spinning mill and his two sisters Of the persons in jured 30 are not expected to recover The dead included many children Queen regent has wired her condo- lences The boiler exploded in the evening when the mill hands many of whom were accompanied by their wives and children were eating supper before commencing the nights work The buildings of the mill collapsed entire ly and the debris was hurled in all directions destroying other buildings and killing and injuring the people in the vicinity Owing to the darkness the work of extricating the victims proceeded with great difficulty the work of rescue there was heard the groans of the victims whose mu tilated limbs were pinned down by the ruins A long line of carts and carriages was engaged in conveying the in jured to the Manresa hospital five miles distant Sunday morning the inhabitants went among the ruins seeking the re mains of friends and relatives while the priests in the open air administered- the last rites of the church to the dy ingIt is now estimated that 60 persons were killed and 100 injured The search at the scene of the ex plosion was continued during the day by members of the Red Cross society and officials Heads arms and legs separated from the bodies and unrec ognizable blackened corpses were the heart of the wholesale district of this city collapsed at 830 oclock Sunday night without any apparent cause and all that now remains is a heap of ruins The buildings were a part of the block bounded by Jeffer son avenue and Shelby and Griswold streets and were occupied by five con cerns and the loss on their stocks which is total is estimated at 152 000 Loss on the buildings amounts to 50500 The buildings joined each other The first and second floors of the building on the corner were occupied by the Maddocks Glove Co manufac turers of gloves and mittens and the two upper floors were used by the Im perial Cap Co manufacturers of hats and caps Adjoining the Maddocks Glove Cos building was the brokerage firm of F B Neuhoff Co who carried a large stock of commission goods In the same building with this firm was lo- cated a stock of commission goods which he carried for Hills Brps of New York arid which Mr Neuhoff said was valued at 7000 The Michigan Produce Co also oc cupied a part of this building The third and fourth buildings were occupied by Crusoe Bros Limited wholesale grocers No one seems to know what caused the collapse of the buildings On Sun day night that district is practically deserted and the few who were in the vicinity say that the buildings seemed to fall into a heap without apparent cause making a noise like the rum bling of distant thunder There are evidences of an explosion about the ruins but no one heard a sound of such an explosion The walls of the rear part of the Maddocks Glove Cos building are still standing to the height of two stories but the roof of this part of the building lies turned bottomside upward in the middle of Shelby street and a large iron smoke stack lies on the sidewalk on the op posite side of the street smashed against the buildings there as if by force Experts from the Detroit Gas Cos office made an examination of the ruins but said they were unable to find evidences of a gas explosion It was fortunate that the wreck occur- red on Sunday night Had it during business hours the loss of life would have been appalling as there were approximately 200 persons employed by the various firms They would have been caught in a veritable death trap and crushed and burned fore they could have been rescued The buildings collapsed into a heap and in a short space of time the in flammable material caught fire from the furnaces used for heating the buildings There were no watchmen about the premises consequently there will be no loss of life HANGED HIMSELF Catholic Priest Committed Suicide in a Detroit Mich Jan 20 Four buildings each four stories high locatedin the heart of the wholesale districtof this city collapsed at 830 oclockSunday night without any apparentcause and all that now remains is aheap of ruins The buildings were apart of the block bounded by Jefferson avenue and Shelby and Griswoldstreets and were occupied by five concerns and the loss on their stockswhich is total is estimated at 152000 Loss on the buildings amountsto 50500

The buildings joined each otherThe first and second floors of thebuilding on the corner were occupiedby the Maddocks Glove Co manufacturers of gloves and mittens and thetwo upper floors were used by the Imperial Cap Co manufacturers of hatsand caps

Adjoining the Maddocks Glove Cosbuilding was the brokerage firm of FB Neuhoff Co who carried a largestock of commission goods In thesame building with this firm was lo-

cated a stock of commission goodswhich he carried for Hills Brps ofNew York arid which Mr Neuhoff saidwas valued at 7000

The Michigan Produce Co also occupied a part of this building

The third and fourth buildings wereoccupied by Crusoe Bros Limitedwholesale grocers

No one seems to know what causedthe collapse of the buildings On Sunday night that district is practicallydeserted and the few who were in thevicinity say that the buildings seemedto fall into a heap without apparentcause making a noise like the rumbling of distant thunder There areevidences of an explosion about theruins but no one heard a sound ofsuch an explosion The walls of therear part of the Maddocks Glove Cosbuilding are still standing to theheight of two stories but the roof ofthis part of the building lies turnedbottomside upward in the middle ofShelby street and a large iron smokestack lies on the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street smashedagainst the buildings there as if
