Return to School Guidance Parent/carers and students From September all of our students will return to school as per the Government guidance for full opening - schools released earlier this month. This document, and our school risk assessment and accompanying video which will be published on our website during the summer holidays, are designed to help you understand the logistics of students’ return, their timetable, and our expectations of students. Please be reminded that school attendance is ‘mandatory again from the beginning of the Autumn term’.

One of the guiding principles of the guidance states that ‘schools must do everything possible to minimise contacts and mixing while delivering a broad and balanced curriculum’. To achieve this, we have rewritten our timetabling and tutor group structures so that students can remain in year group bubbles with staggered arrival and departure times from school.

How learning will work Students will continue to receive the teaching and full timetable as expected in September, following a high-quality, broad and balanced curriculum appropriate to their year group and key stage. The school day has changed and will consist of 5 x 50 minute lessons with a 10-minute transition period at the end of each lesson to allow teachers to move between areas of the school, thus allowing students to remain in year group bubbles for the majority of the school day.

The ‘area bubble’ will only be left by a student group if they have a lesson in a specialist classroom such as Design Technology. Each bubble will have its own allocated toilet block and water bottle filling station, and a cleaning team will work throughout the school day to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness for our school community.

The school day (from Monday 7 September) Students are to arrive at school as follows:

8.40 – 9.00am Year 12 ONLY tutor period 9.00 – 9.50am Period 1

10.00 – 10.50am Period 2 11.00 – 11.50am Period 3

Sixth Form: Students will receive 50 minute lessons from their subject teachers. They will receive 9 lessons over the two-week cycle of the school timetable – there is no change here. All A Level subjects will run as normal. The Sixth Form will be based primarily in the Science Block and G Block. From 2.30pm, students will be able to book welfare drop-ins with the Sixth Form team as required to offset the loss of tutoring time in the afternoon. These will also be available, as usual, during the school day as required.

When students have a study period they are permitted to sign out and leave the school site via the Sixth Form Centre entrance. Under no circumstances are they allowed anywhere other than the Sixth Form Centre study room during these study periods (they cannot purchase food from the canteen during these periods). Students can sign out and leave the school site when they do not have a lesson.

Years 10 and 11: Students will receive 50 minute lessons from their subject teachers in their allocated timetabled rooms. All GCSE subjects will run as normal. The only subject we will not be running is Core ICT (ta non-GCSE subject) as we need to ensure these rooms are cleaned thoroughly after each use. Students will have additional Careers and Education for Life input during this one hour per fortnight. Year 10 will be based primarily in J Block and Year 11 primarily in T Block.

If students have practical PE during their day they can come to school in their school PE kit as there will be limited changing facilities available. From 2.30pm – 3.15pm, Year 11 students will have a Tutorial and Learning Skills session where they will be able to complete work, revise, and learn study skills to help them prepare for their GCSE exams. This will be supported by a designated tutor. From 2.30pm – 3.00pm, Year 10 students will have a tutorial session with a designated tutor, following the Bournside tutorial programme.

Years 7, 8 and 9: Students will receive 50 minute lessons from their subject teachers in their allocated timetabled rooms. Design Technology and PE lessons will take place in the subject-specific department areas. Year 7 will be based primarily in H Block, Year 8 primarily in the classrooms on the Upper B corridor, and Year 9 primarily in K Block. From 2.30pm – 3.00pm, Years 7, 8 and 9 students will have a tutorial session with a designated tutor, following the Bournside tutorial programme. If students have practical PE during their day they can come to school in their school PE kit as there will be limited changing facilities available at school.

All year groups: Where possible please send your child to school with a packed lunch and snacks to

minimise students using the Dining Centre and allow them to have a snack in the 10-minute lesson changeover.

The Dining Centre will be open for students to purchase hot and cold food and drink during their lunch break only. The weekly menu will be advertised on the school website the previous week. Students will be provided with a payment card linked to their online payment portal that parents will add money to for them to purchase lunch at school.

All assemblies will be delivered through video to avoid larger year group gatherings. Students will receive their personalised timetable on their first day in September.

Key messages Students are to: 1. Adhere to social distancing rules at all times 2. Follow all Public Health England advice over what to do if they or any other member of

their household display any COVID-19 symptoms 3. Travel to school wherever possible on foot or by bicycle and avoid being in groups

4. Arrive at school punctually as per their year group arrival time and enter the school through the correct gate

5. Follow the school Behavjour Policy (which includes a Covid-19 Annex) and all staff instructions without question at all times – this will be updated from September 2020 and will be available on our website in due course

6. Leave the school site as soon as their school day ends and not loiter in the local area 7. All students must wear their school uniform when they attend school. If students have PE

during the day, then they can wear their school PE kit to school and for the duration of the day to negate the need for personal changing

8. Follow Public Health England guidance on catching coughs, sneezes etc. in a tissue, hand or elbow’ and discard the tissue in the pedal bin in the classroom immediately and then wash their hands

9. Sanitise their hands on arriving to school and on returning to the classroom after their lunch break, as well as engaging in regular handwashing

10. Have a thorough wash/shower/bath on their return from school to reduce the risk of transmission.

Parents/carers are to ensure they: 1. Do not come on to the school site under any circumstances unless there is an

emergency or you have an appointment 2. Immediately inform the school if your child develops symptoms of COVID-19 if they have

attended school 3. Explain to your child the Public Health England advice on reporting any symptoms they

may develop of COVID-19 and follow the track and trace system if they do 4. Check your child is appropriately dressed for school 5. Ensure your child has a thorough wash /bath/shower on their return from school to

reduce the risk of transmission 6. Discuss the importance of social distancing when in the local community and at school 7. Are aware we may have to close at short notice if Public Health England instructs us to 8. Do not gather or congregate with others at the school gates 9. Only drive your child to school if absolutely essential, in which case drop-off and pick-up

must be on the main road in front of the school by the school field. Under no circumstances should a parent drop a student off in the school car park unless a prior agreement has been made with the school.
