Between my sophomore and junior year in college a buddy o mine that I worked with (being the greatest

wingman in the world) happened to round up a couple o Texas girls who had come to Norman to party and

    A

s long as there has been Internet, the res

been music on it. From the early days

o Napster beore it was shut down or

giving people all o their music or ree,

all the way up to iTunes and paying 99 cents todownload one song. For people who dont eel

like paying that kind o money but arent willing

to go to piracy or torrenting (which isnt, strictly

speaking, legal), theres always certain sites that

stream music, including internet radio stations.

However, the astest growing (and likely most

popular) way to stream music on the Internet is

    Spotiy.

Originally rom Sweden, Spotiy allows people

to search rom 15 million tracks across all genres,

allowing or searches by artist, album, specic

track or genre. There are also radio stations or

each genre and decade. Further, it also shows a

list o top tracks and albums played by its users.

Theres also a huge social component to it (which

goes so ar as to require users to have an active

Facebook account to even use Spotiy) that a llows

you to see the music your riends have been

listening to.Like most music-streaming services, Spotiy

operates on a hybrid business model: it has a ree,

ad-supported version, as well as a subscription

model, or in its case, two subscription models.

The ree version works or ten hours per month

with ads every roughly ourth to th song.

Spotiy Unlimited gets rid o the ads and the time

constraints on its usage or $4.99/month, and

Spotiy Premium allows users to get higher sound

quality, an oine mode that doesnt require a

constant Internet connection and access through

    smartphones or $9.99/month.

Spotiy seems to be a more enjoyable, usable

option than many o its competitors overall,

notably Pandora. One big advantage I think

Spotiy has over Pandora is that users can skip

as many tracks as they want on the ree version,

where Pandora limits them to twelve skips in a 24-

hour period. Another is that Pandora only works as

Internet radio: itll play songs on a station similar

to what the one that was created, but one cant

pick specic tracks without creating a whole

new station or tell it what to play next. However,

Pandora will allow users o its ree version tounlimited listening time, which is one notch in its

belt, and one thing that Spotiy Free doesnt do.

Despite Spotiys success, there have been

some unpopular decisions regarding it, notably

mandating that users have an active Facebook

account to use it, and automatically sharing

everything that a user plays with the service.

While it doesnt bother me that people might

know I listen to Iron Maiden and Ma stodon, some

people may have some guilty pleasure groups

they listen to that they dont necessarily want

people to know they listen to. This also refects

back on Facebooks less than stellar record when it

comes to their users privacy. Spotiy has also comeunder re or lowballing indie labels: one estimate

showed that any artist would have to be streamed

over our million times to reach $1,160 per month,

the equivalent o the U.S. ederal minimum wage

($7.25/hr) extrapolated on a monthly level.

Whether or not Spotiy will continue to be a

workable service or the oreseeable uture is a

matter that is still debatable. It doesnt show any

signs o slowing down in the immediate uture,

however; I still see my Facebook eed inundated

with my riends listening to whatever tracks they

listen to pretty oten. Im even using it right now

as I nish this column, i that says anything about

    it.

gives us a good opportunity tocompare new remakes or se-quels to their older originals.Twisted Metal, or example, was one o the very rst titlesor the original PlayStation, and spawned a series withits over-the-top vehicularcombat and split-screen mul-tiplayer action. Icant tell you exactly what I was thinking. I dont know i I thought that Icould keep the charade going orever, or i I secretly believed that the bottomwould have dropped out and I wouldve been ound out by now, i not romthe beginning.

But somehow I havent been ound out, and so I must coness my dark secret toyou all:Mel Guapo is not actually a music critic.

Its not due to a lack o expertise or vocabulary, however. Ive been in the musicgame longer than most. My passion or music alone is my greatest strength, andmy talent or the written word is obvious. I know what Im talking about andI know what Im listening or when it comes to tunes. But its that very samepassion or music that is my greatest weakness, and there lies the root o theproblem.

You see, or Mel Guapo, music criticism is not meant to deal in the question owhat is good music and what is bad music. All music has value, but that valuealways depends on the contextualization. And the value system within whichthe music is contextualized (and ultimately criticized) depends entirely upon thecritic.

You see, Ive never met a tune I didnt like. There have been more than a ew thatI havent understood, but never a tune that I didnt like. I have learned steadilyover my twenty-three years that songs I thinkI dislike, is actually a case o lackingthe proper contextualization.

Which brings us to the other part o my secret problem as a music critic: I fnd it

a painul, miserable process to contextualize any artists work or them, which iswhy I preer to interview the subject in question, to give them a say in how theirwork is to be understood.

But this week I went on an important business trip, and by the time I fnally madeit home, I was wiped out and out o time. So Im going to attempt something thatIve not attempted beore or Boyd Street: a cold, ast read o an EP released thispast week titled Family Trees rom local ar tist Young Readers.

It eels sae to say at this point that you all understand that I hardly knowwhat Im doing. So when I got an email containing a proper press release romYoung Readers, I was immensely relieved. Why? Because inside contained acontextualization straight rom the horses (publicists) mouth. Allow me toreprint, word or word, said contextualization:

Jordan Herrera is an Oklahoma native with a relentless passion formusic Young Readers is the formation of Jordans sound all alone. Withtwo microphones and a handful of instruments, he locked himself in his roomand recorded an EP that has the weight of a heartfelt burden, entwined deepwithin your chest.

Now having provided the ar tists own input in the contextualization, allow Melto provide his own cold read. This sot and sad collection o six songs, built out oorganic, earthy sounding strings and pads and layered vocal blends, is the perectsoundtrack or lonely, rainy nights or nights with wine and ood and riends. Andcheck it out, you can color the CD sleeve yoursel!

Somehow I havent been ound out.

In Oklahoma, when you hear the word BEDLAM, what do you think, chaos, madnesspandemonium? We intend to continue thattheme this spring with the rst annual Bedlam Mud Run. This amazing event was strategically planned to be at a point right betweenNorman and Stillwater to pit two opposing legions of devotees an equal opportunity to meet this spring on April 14th at the Lazy E Arenain Guthrie, OK. The rivalry continues, but theres a twist! At the Bedlam Mud Run, we are all meeting to support a great cause that hitshome for children of Oklahoma. The Bedlam Mud Run was created to raise money to fund projects in Oklahoma that provide good nutrition to underprivileged kids andeducate needy families on the importance of good nutrition for their children and themselves. The Bedlam Mud Run is a 5K run through 16 different obstacles ranging from mud pits to crawl through, large and short walls to scale, cargo nets to traverse, and many more obstacles to attack, and end with a re jump! The Bedlam Mud Run isnt your typical 5K run byany means. This will be an all day event that will include a 1 mile kids course that will be ooded with kids from the local YMCAs, livemusic from Denver Duncan and At Long Last, a live DJ for the crowd, food vendors, and beginning at 11am, beer will begin being sold.Come for the mud run, and stay for the party! If you have kids that want to run in the rst annual Bedlam Mud Run, you can even nominate your kid to run for free from our website

www.BedlamMudRun.com. We will be accepting up to 1000 kids to run in the Bedlam Mud Run for free! So get those nominations inbefore the kids run lls up.Oklahoma has had some negative press over the past few years for being in the top three unhealthiest states in the nation. Oklahomas

obesity rate is above 30%, and were going to change that. It is sometimes hard to change to habits of an adult, but if we can educatekids and guide them to better nutrition habits before they are adults, then we stand a chance to steer this train back on track.

This is just the rst year for the Bedlam Mud Run and it is already getting lots of attention across central Oklahoma. It is our goal tocreate a series of ve themed 5K fun runs that will entertain, educate, and raise money to help low-income families break the cycleof obesity. Our ve-year goal is to build enough of a participant base for these races so we can donate one million dollars worth ofnutritional products to low-income families. We have the passion to meet this goal, now we just need your participation.

As the owers begin to bloom this spring and you beginyour spring cleaning process you might want to start withsomething other than urniture. Just a thought.

Throughout college people tend to keep their storage opossible dating buddies, hook-up buddies, exes or whoever in theirphone and as a Facebook riend juuuust in case. And even i youthink theres possibility to rekindle that ame, remember this ... itdidnt work out or a reason.

So my suggestion or all those loaded with back-ups in their dating arsenal is that you should, dareI say it, delete them. Yes, press the delete buttonor in other words, end that sh*t. Howeverdrastic this might seem to you, itreally is a good thing. Not onlywould deleting an old amescontact inormation rom yourngertips be a good thing, butit might also give you enoughclarity and closure to move on tothe next best thing.

Way too many times do I see girls, andguys, stuck in that rut o leaving the barwith the same person. Yes, the same person who

didnt call last time, or didnt ask you out on a date,or didnt ollow through. Letsace it, theyre never going toollow through. Especially iyoure available to them everytime they call, no matter how astthey aked out the time beore. Doyoursel a avor and end it. Delete them. When they call next time, dont answer. The crazypsychological thing about it is once you stop responding, theyll probably want you more. But keep in mind: theyrejust playing the game. Nothing new, nothing shiny is goingto spring up rom that pile o mud.

Granted, maybe youre not ready to clean out your closet. I getit, its a big step. Who will you drunk text then? Who will youget to chase? The un o it is, something new will come. Possiblysomething surprising and awesome will venture your way. I dontsay this as I guess - I know it. I you delete the old and welcomein the new, it will orce you to mingle and meet new people whoyou mightve never come into contact with i you stayed with thereliable backups.

A rm believer in only practicing what you preach, I have donethis. I deleted the backups out o my lie.

Granted, I did my spring cleaning out orage with the male gender and wasclose to cutting of my dating careercompletely, but ater my rage I started

seeking out new guys. O course the oldones wondered where I went and some othem even were persistent in trying to hang

out with me again, but no-no-no I didnot go back. Instead I told them to stopdrunk texting me.

My dates with diferent guys led meto my current boyriend, a guy who never

put me as a backup but instead started out

with me as his center o attention. SuddenlyI was the hot commodity to old ings,

because I had ound someone whoactually would ollow throughwith his relationship with me.

I leave you with this. Springcleaning isnt just or households.

Its or lives. Like the owers outside and the dusty cofeetable, everything needs a little dust and polish now andthen ... even your little black book.

    >>Dont mess with Julias kingdom.

Some o the most popular movies o all time are

stories o the underdog. The audience goes in and

wants to see the little guy come out o the boxing

ring with a black eye and a victory belt, or the cute

nerdy guy win out over the rich, arrogant businessman.

Now, combine this with our love o reality TV. We want

to see the unlikely person come out the victor in real lie, which TV can provide, though lm cannot. (Ironic, isnt

it? Who knew real lie would come out o a television

set.) These reality shows range rom the isolation and

challenges oSurvivor to everyday lie changes like The

    Biggest Loserand Extreme Home Makeover.

    O all the

    diferent styles

    o reality shows,

    though, those with

    the most popularity

    are the ones that

    promise to produce

    the next great talent.

    The highest-ratedshow on US television

    is American Idol,

    coming out on top o

    the ratings or eight

seasons. The show was the rst o

its kind, but many others have ollowed close on its heels.

Americas Got Talent, The One, Britains Got Talent, Insert-

Your-Country-Because-Its Got Talent and many others all

    in this category.

Most recently, The Voice has been sweeping the country

as the new craze. Many expected the ratings to all once

the novelty o the show wore of, as happens with many

    such shows.

    Instead the

    ratings have

    climbed.

    The Voice is

unique in that it hides the per son

auditioning rom the judges, so that the only criteriaor selection isas one might imaginetheir voice.

Contestants are picked to be on a certain judges team,

and are then coached by that judge until the team goes

    into sing-ofs and eliminations.

    Like every reality show, it

    comes out with a winner.

    Like every talent-based

    show, its covered with

    lots o recording studio

    ootage and some

    excellent tracks. But

    still, viewers adore it,

    pushing up the ratings

just like they have orother shows o that

    nature.

    We care about the

    exceptional, and so the very

concept o talent draws us. Were drawn to extremes o

ability, whether that means a blow-you-away voice like

Carrie Underwoods or a ridiculous teenager with parents

who never had the guts to tell him hes tone-dea.

Adding in the aspect o a reality show brings in that

underdog aspect that we so love. Our upstairs neighbor

could be the next American Idol. Or he could be the next

    Pants on the Ground sensation.

Winter is coming, right? For us, I guess not this year. But if any of you out there need to get someGame of Thrones-inspired cosplay out of your system before the show starts back up at the end of

April, youll be in luck. Its time to head back to the Dark Ages with a turkey leg (yes!) and a funnelcake (what?). Kiddies, its time for the Medieval Fair, scheduled for March 30 - April 1 at Reaves Park.A Norman staple for 35 years, the Medieval Fair always seems to nd a way to sneak up on you. Perhaps it

just gets lost in the shufe since its stuck right in the midst of spring break, the beginnings of the semestershome stretch and now the Norman Music Festival. At any rate, it always proves to be one of the moreunderrated themed weekends this town has to offer year in and year out.For the uninitiated, the Medieval Fair is exactly what it sounds like. A three-day bloodletting that revolves

around sword ghts, wenches, horns of ale and meats roasted on spits. Fine, maybe that was a touchexaggerated. Sorry, a bit too pumped about Game of Thrones. Seriously.Actually, the fair does boast royalty holding court, jousting, melees, minstrels, period dancing and music.

Along with it are more booths than you can count selling all manner of fun items and random knick-knacks,often made by the sellers themselves. If you dont happen to be in the market for a new morning star or a fullset of chain mail, I daresay youll still nd something to spend money on. Perhaps a fun piece of new jewelry othe like. Its been a few years since the fair moved from the Duck Pond. Its kind of a shame that had to happen

because I think everyone would agree that the Duck Pond was by far a more scenic locale, but the space andadditional parking over at Reaves Park were surely welcome.Ill always remember my rst Medieval Fair for a few things. It was my rst trip to the Duck Pond upon moving

to Oklahoma, which ended up being one of my favorite places when I was a kid, and of course, my brother andI got our rst wooden sword and shield sets. Our parents probably thought it wasnt as good of an idea after allthe bruises that were raised, but hey, boys will be boys.

    27/32

My time at the fair however, has long shifted from getting a new toy to people watching. Aside from checkingout all the random fare, its clearly the most fun portion of the Medieval Fair. Its always fun to see people reallyget into the weekend and get completely decked out in their truly vintage garb. In fact, my favorite teacher fromhigh school throws a kilt on every year. Im not quite that bold but perhaps one day. There are also several little other shows you can see, like the kids sword ghting. It appears to be a winner-

stays-in type of affair and theres usually a kid there taking it a bit more seriously than the others whodominates the eld. A future Mountain that Rides right there, Im sure. For a more rened affair, the jousting isalways a winner. While were at it, lets just check off a few things that should be on your Medieval Fair to-do list.

1Eat a turkey leg/Indian taco/funnel cake, or go crazy and do all three. Everyone loves fair food and formy money these beat the heck out of the food at the great State Fair of Oklahoma. Actually, the turkeyleg is pretty much a must-purchase item every year. Im yet to have one that isnt satisfying. If youre avegetarian I guess youll just have to settle for the funnel cake or the buffet of various roasted (right in

front of you no less) and seasoned nuts, which are also delicious. Or

2Get a couple bottles of the homemade root beer. Im not much of aroot beer person myself but the giant bottles of root beer that are

available to take home are a yearly treat. While still quite sweet, the avors are much livelier than that can of A&W. Theres areason the line for the root beer is always a long one.

3Check out the human chess board. It can be a bit slow from time totime, but if youre on a meal break its a good place to sit and eat(the bard and minstrel shows are also a good candidate). I haventseen many of these in my life outside of the fair, but its always a

cool little spectacle. Unless of course you dont like or dont get chess, then I guess youre just watching people stand there playing dress-up. Itsyour loss, honestly.

4Try the rope/net ladder. I defy anyone to actually do this. You seethe kids try it and fail and you think, Ha ha, children. Not the caseat all. I suppose if youre really strong and have excellent bodycontrol you can do it, but hey, most of us arent gymnasts. A few

tries isnt too bad of a workout after a turkey leg I would say.

5Do some axe-throwing. With these tough economic times, its toughto say if the price has changed, but you get some good tosses at anice big target. Actually, its just kind of gratifying to throw a big axeat a big piece of plywood. If I were to purchase one piece of era-

appropriate weaponry Id have to go with a throwing axe. Probably a goodthing that most of my disposable income goes to drinking.Of course, theres plenty more that you can nd to do over there. We

both know youre itching to ride a camel anyway. Each year, weatherpermitting, the Medieval Fair provides a breezy way to kill a Saturdayafternoon with your peeps. Youll eat and drink some stuff thats bad foryou and buy some stuff that you might not need, but its cool and denitelydelicious. Only got two Game of Thrones references in here too. I dontknow whos more disappointed, me or Eddard Stark. Probably Eddard(three!). Come and get me when its time to slay the dragon.

    Of The Corner By SarahHill

    28

Celebrating their 32nd anniversary in May, I eel its sae to say thatCaymans has a ew things igured out. Oering something or everyone(literally everyone) this business has become somewhat o a miniaturedepartment store, one that provides consumers with a genuine customer

experience. Because, as owner Shelley Cox attested in my interview with her, its

all about the customer. Its not every day that a business gears their merchandise to the customers.

Instead some businesses decide its their job to set the trends and push them uponconsumers. Caymans takes a dierent approach, which might b e why theyve beenso successul or the last three decades. The merchandise at Caymans is gearedtoward what the people o Norman want. And the beauty behind it is, becausethey do work hard to stay on top o current trends and maintain a healthy s tock oclassic staples, in most cases they know what the consumer will want beore theyget there. Odds are, i they dont have it yet, theyll get it. Botta bing, botta b oom.As Cox said, Were constantly paying attention to what our c ustomers want.

Despite Caymans reputation as a high-end boutique, its actually everything butthat (let me explain). Its more than a boutique, and its more (or less...) thanhigh-end. More stores dont take on this much, said Cox. Theyre the largestdenim carrier in Oklahoma, and although their concentration is on Normancollege students, they do business with people all across the country thanks to the

relationships theyve built over the years. Our ocus is on communicating withour customers, Cox said. We love it, customers today are very savvy - they knowwhats going on. We have to stay on top o things.

Expanding on who their demographic is Cox explained, There are all pricesranging in our store. She continued, Were dealing with college stud ents. Yes, wecarry the latest and the greatest, but we seek out aordable things, too. We areaware that were in a college town. We have to carry all prices, and have to have, and work hard at, carrying items in all price ranges.

Along with a wide range o prices, they ocused on a wide range o merchandiseincluding accessories, handbags, shoes, cosmetics, dcor and more. Wereconstantly evolving, said Cox.

Caymans carries clothes or men and women, and then theyve even takenthings up a notch by oering unique services like their makeup counter and reemakeovers. Theyve also recently added house dcor to their extensive list ostylish oerings, but it doesnt stop there. Case in point, their new bridal registry.

Its huge, said Cox. And huge it is; brides-to-be can walk into the store and taganything they wish. Wedding guests can even access the bride-to-bes registryonline. Sign me up. I girls needed another reason to get married ... this might beit. (Joking ... err, sort o.)

At the end o the day Caymans has their priorities in the right place: wit h Norman

customers. We want everyone to b e able to shop here, Cox continued. We wanteveryone to come i n here and have a great time, play with make up, anything.

With no plans o ever adding another store, Caymans ocuses on reaching out tocustomers (2,800+ Facebook Check-ins and over 1,000 likes), and on constantlyevolving their store to deliver what the people o Norman want/need.

Who wouldve thought? All o the sudden Ive realized what I want/need ...shopping trip anyone? What can I say? Im inspired. See you there!

    By ChrisJoseph

Acouple o issues ago I told you about the University o Oklahoma baseball team. Nowits time to let you all know about the Sooner sotball team and the cast that couldhave this team playing in Oklahoma City once again or the National Championship.Head sotball coach Patty Gasso in her 18th year as the skipper o the Sooners has

a team that is loaded with newcomers and veteran stars both with the bat and in the circle. The leader and big name on this team is junior let-handed superstar Keilani Ricketts. Rick-

etts has been named 2011 NFCA All-American. Keilani is the single season strikeout leaderin Sooner history with 452 in last years season, and was selected to the 2011 United StatesNational Team and is poised to be the next star or the U.S.A. or years to come. R icketts is alsovery skilled with the bat with 21 home runs to her credit. Ricketts is the type o player that canhandle the pressure o the big game and when it comes crunch time or the Sooners this year,Coach Gasso will turn to Ricketts.

The luxury or Coach Gasso and the Sooner sotball team is that they dont only have to relyon Ricketts; the Sooners have two outstanding hurlers, the other being junior Michelle Gas-

coigne. Gascoigne was 9-3 last year and tossed the Sooners seventh perect game in programhistory with a 8-0 ve-inning victory over Appalachian State. This is a luxury or Coach Gassobecause Gascoigne can shoulder some o the load and could help the Sooners in a pinch.

The three seniors on the team are important to the Sooner success. Allee Allen, Kirsten Allenand Katie Norris all have their role on the Sooner sotball squad. Kirsten Allen just threw a one-hitter against Austin Peay on March 6th. Katie Norris, a Stillwater native, has ound a home inSooner country. Primarily a designated hitter, Norris is a s killed utility player that coach Gass ouses in many situations. Norris even lled in as catcher last year when injuries depleted theSooners o their two catchers. Allee Allen, no relation to Kirsten Allen, is a designated playerthat can do many things as well, rom pitching to playing in the eld.

Some o the younger Sooners to keep an eye out or are Brittany Williams (sophomore),Destinee Martinez (sophomore) and Lauren Chamberlin (reshman). This group o young andtalented players has a ton o potential and can swing the bat. I have had the chance to speakto Coach Gasso a ew times so ar during this season and she eels that this reshman class andthe younger group o sophomores and juniors that are now on the roster pose a huge threat to

the sotball world on the ofensive si de o the game. Coach Ga sso expects this group to powerthe Sooners with the bats and put up huge numbers.

The best story on this team has to be the return o Jessica Shults. The junior catcher ell illlast year, but up to this point o the year everything seems to be pointing to Shults being muchbetter. Shults is in the top ten in most ofensive categories in the Big12 up to this point. It isnot just her numbers that will help this team, many eel that Shults is the heartbeat o the thisteam. The Sooner sotball team rallied around their teammate last year in making a run to theCollege World Series. With Shults back on the eld completing the battery with Ricketts thisSooner sotball team should make a return visit to the College World Series held at the ASA Hallo Fame Stadiums in Oklahoma City.

The weather is changing into spring and summer is not that ar away.
