When I was younger, every dollar that I earned could be spent two ways: I could buyDiet Coke or I could buyMagic: The Gatheringcards. I maintained a balance betweenthe two, but eventually purchasing collectable card games (CCG) were replaced with carpayments and rent. I miss the glory days o tapping two islands and casting a counterspell, much to the chagrin o my opponent.

But at $4 a pack, card games are just too expensive on a journalists salary.

    Enter the ree-to-play market (F2P).

New orms o digital distribution have given rise to the F2P market, which have birthed greatMMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online) and casual games that burn up time without destroyingour wallets. Paying happens a ter the player gets into the game. Getting money requiresentertaining games that motivate the player to pull out the credit card. And some o theseF2P games allow players to earn cards while playing, requiring only time i one wants toget the best cards. Paying is an option but not required.

As more F2P games crop up, developers are creating card-based games emulating someo the best CCGs, likeMight and Magic: Duel o Championsand Blizzards upcomingHearthstone: Heroes o Warcra t . These games have resources, blocking and everythingelse you could want rom a card game.

Oh, and it doesnt cost anything to get in. Nor do you have to play to keep playing. Moneyis used as a convenience tool to buy more packs and enter tournaments.

The F2P model o trading time or goods is per ect or online CCGs. Players still get all o the benefts o card games incredible strategies, unlimited customization and competitivegameplay without having to throw down up to $200 or $300 to get a good backlog o cards and build a decent deck.

O course, online lobbies are nothing like game shops, which are not only great places tobuy cards but also to meet new people, develop relationships and enjoy un, competitivegames. Online CCGs cant recreate this experience. Card/game shops are hotbeds o activity where gamers let loose and enjoy their avorite hobbies. Ive made plenty o long-term riends in shops.

While the lack o a card shop is a big loss, it doesnt disquali y online CCGs as legitimatesources o entertainment.Might and Magic: Duel o Championsis an incredibly solid gameand it can be played on PC or on the iPad.

Developers also are leveraging the power o electronic play to create new, unique CCG.Card Hunter is a mix o Dungeons and Dragonshexagonal combat, card-collecting and deck-building (more on this game in the sidebar). And a newly kickstarted CCG,HEX: Shards o Fate , is touted as the frst MMO CCG. It will eature raids, dungeons and other MMO eaturesbuilt into a card game. Its being developed by the guys who created theWorld o Warcra t CCG, so theambitious projectis in good hands.

The uture is brightor CCGs as

more developerso er cheaperalternatives andmost o themleverage the F2Pmodel to putthe emphasison playing, notpaying.

A new Collectable Card Gamedeveloped by veterans o Bioshock and System Shock 2 is my avorite newgame.

Card Hunter is a twist on the CCG.Players recruit three adventurers andplay through scenarios akin to those

ound in tabletop games likeDungeonsand Dragons. Completing these missionsgives the player loot, which is equippedto the heroes.

This makes your heroes power ul byaugmenting their deck. Each itemequipped to a hero has cards attached toit that change the way your hero fghts, moves, blocks and everything else. Thereare plenty o di erent items that makecustomizing your hero easy to do andchallenging to master. Each adventurebrings its own obstacles that requireplanning and a bit o luck.

The game is in beta right now, but it isslated to release in summer 2013. It willbe ree to play and players can purchasepizza to get more gold, acquire items

aster or buy special fgurines andmissions.

The game is awesome enough to releasenow, so extra time to polish the game willonly make it even more irresistible. Signup or the beta at www.cardhunter.com.

Depth & Current is one o the hardest working and most active bands coming out o Norman and Oklahomain general today. Brainchild o artist, dreamer and community stalwart Chris Harris, Depth & Current hasplayed actively on the regional independent rock scene since 2008. The band has see n a number o personnel changes over the years and grown in both sound and ar tistry, but it is currently made up o ChrisHarris ( ront man, guitar), Derek Lemke (guitar), and Tommy McKenzie (bass), occasionally joined by MattDuckworth on the drums.

In addition to Depth & Current, Harris a lso owns and operates a recording studio in Norman called HookEcho Sound, which also produces the work o other original local bands. In addition to the band and studio,Harris maintains a pet project independent record label, Nice People Records, releasing vinyl records romlocal talent.

For this issue I am inter viewing Chris Harris himsel .

    Why does m s c matter?

While there are still raging debates about taste and the validity o one type o music or another, the simple act is, most people enjoy music. Music and sex are both universally appealing both would rate above 99%.

Even i Ive got no respect or a persons taste in music, I have to respect the idea that music has meaning to them. Music can be everything romsoothing background noise to a catalyst or deep introspection. It can educate and elevate consciousness. Or, it can s imply compel you to move your body. Music can be pain ully serious. But, it can also be just plain un.

But, whatever it is to you, its a par t o your li e. It holds onto memories or you. And, it helps you put things into pe rspective.

What s the ph losophy beh nd Depth & C rrent?

Depth & Currents overriding philosophy is and always has been sonic experimentation. The sounds are the result o earless exploration. The soundsand noises are intended to be challenging and provocative. A long time ago,I was inspired by some comments rom Trent Reznor, to try to appreciate the beauty in sounds that at rst are rightening ... Im interested in making recordsthat sound cool or di erent. Depth & Current is my primary vehicle or that.

What exper ence and/or al es-- n general or spec cally--do yo br ng to yo r m s c that make yo mportant and/orleg t mate as an art st?

I think the one value I possess that makes me proud o the man that Ive become is my ability to put mysel in the shoes o another person and to view di erent situations rom a perspective other than my own. In that way, its being able to step outside o just my own experiences and valuesthat makes my art have meaning to others.

Wo ld yo rather be lo d or nderstood?

The truth is, i anyone is immediately put o by the noise or the volume, they probably werent going to understand where we were coming romanyway. Im getting more com ortable with pushing the vocals to the ront o a mix. But, honestly, no matter where we put the vocals, its a decisionthat is made in service to the song and the music and has very little to do with any desire to be understood. I expect that people who really understand where were coming rom are the kind o people who arent a raid to dive into the sea o noise to look or the beauty.

    Whats mportant n l e? And how does yo r m s c refect that?

Integrity is important. Our music refects that by trusting the audience to nd the beauty in the chaos.Love is important. Our music refects that by emphasizing the importance o sharing your heart with a kindred spirit.Con dence is important. Our music refects that by not caring when people are turned o by the sound or the optimistic treatment o love.

Where does a song beg n or yo ?

In the past, I always starte d songs with a chord progression. I thought that music was something that was right or wrong. I saw it as a challenge to gure out which chord SHOULD come next. Lately, Im more likely to start songs with a beat and a bass line. Either way, to me a s ong doesnt really start to become a song until I start kicking around vocal melodies. And I really never all in love with a song until I start to get some lyrics that serve its sound and mean something to me.

It happened ast and shocked a lot o people in the Sooner baseball program andaround the college baseball world. The Sooner head coach, Sunny Golloway, le t theSooners and took the head job in the SEC or the Auburn Tigers.

The Sooners lost in the sup er regional round to the LSU Tigers out in Baton Rouge. Wasit the lure o SEC competition? Was it the money? No one but Sunny will know theanswer to that. Sunny won at OU and took the team back to the College World Seriesin 2010 and made deep tournament runs the last several years.

The days a ter Golloway took the job at Auburn were very interesting in that we sawplayers like Dillon Overton and ans express how happy they were that Gollowaywas gone. Venom began to spew toward the ormer coach. This is not an article toshow displeasure in Golloway, but a look ahead as to who will take over the headposition or the Sooner baseball program. It is a program that may not be one o theblue bloods in college baseball like they are in the hierarchy o college ootball, butthis is still a program that deserves to be led by one o the best in the game. My list o prospective coaches is below:

Dan Hee ner, Head Coach Dallas Baptist:Hee ner has made a program out o DBU that has owned the Sooners as o late, and he has a Super Regional appearance underhis belt. At 35 his youth and recruitment in the ertile grounds o Texas could be a great tool to help the Sooner program continueits ascent to national power. Some may question his greatness due to the level o competition that the Patriots ace during theirseason.

David Pierce, Head Coach o Sam Houston State:The headman or the Bearkats saw his team lose to those same LSU Tigers in the regional round o the College World Series. Agood young talent in the world o coaching, Pierce has no ties to the program or the state. Pierce has only been the coach or a

year, so would he leave a ter one season at Sam Houston?

Randy Mazey, Head Coach West Virginia:Mazey has a lot o coaching experience and is in the con erence; that is a strong possibility in itsel . Would Mazey leave aprogram that is building a new stadium or his team? They were a surprise on the Big 12 this year, with great pitching andscrappy players that like to put pressure on the opposing teams with running and good hitting.

There are a lot o guys that are on the list o names to consider, like Mike Bell at Florida State, even though people eel he will stayat FSU or the oreseeable uture. Then there are long shots like Denney Crabaugh rom OCU a nd Ryan Minor.

One last name I would like to see considered is the head coach o Florida so tball yes, I said so tball who is ormer Soonerbaseball player Tim Walton. He has been the head coach or the Gator so tball team and led his team to the College World Seriesfve years in a row. With great ties to the state and program and his ability to recruit talent, plain and simple, I think Walton couldbe someone to at least talk to and gauge his interest.

This hire is a big one or the sta in the athletic department at OU and the program is moving in the right direction. The hire needsto be someone that keeps the momentum going and doesnt let it stall out. Sooner baseball is looking or a leader, and it will beinteresting to see who steps up and where the program heads.

Well call him Mr. Hipp. I hadnt seen Mr. Hipp or a ew years, so we decided catch up inthe Caribbean. The frst day in that crystal blue water, I saw it. Mr. Hipp had a white scaron his back that oddly resembled a string o letters. Turns out they were a string o burntletters spelling his ex-fancs name. The key word in that last sentence is ex. Yuck neverthought hed be one o them. Mr. Hipp ell victim to love ink that later became a meatcanvas or laser tat removal when the relationship died.

People o Norman, i you learn nothing else, learn this: You must never, ever, no matterwhat, or the love o everything right and avoidance o BIG TIME wrong, tattoo a loversname/ ace on your body. I dont care i youre shwasted on Patrn, i your Grandma gave you the thumbs up or the love o your li e brought you to the table, dont do it, man. Its ajinx at best and an expensive, massive regret at worst.

Dont believe me? Heres just the tip o the iceberg:

    1. Johnny Depp thought hed be with Wynona Ryder orever and e ver. Wynona who?2. Rapper Nas put his boo on his arm, bare milkshakes and all, but o course that soured.3. Angelina not only wore a vial o Billy Bobs blood, but she also wore his name threelayers deep in her arm skin. A ew years later she dissed Billy or Brad. #swapninja4. And, oh, theres Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards. He had her name on his wrist. She had his on her ankle. I dont know why thatdidnt work out. Charlie is a total rock star rom Mars. He was bangin seven-gram rocks, cause thats how he rolled. Not bi-polar. Bi-winning.

The list goes on and on. Take the in amous ring tattoo. When things all apart, how do you get rid o that bad boy? And a concealerdoesnt change the act you know you scored an F and scratched it into a more socially acceptable B.

Theres something about that needle laying down permanent ink into your permanent body in the name o a possibly non-permanentrelationship that will decide the ate o your relationship or you. The minute that gun buzzes, youve boarded the ail-boat.

I you must link through ink, choose something signifcant to only you two. For instance, B and Jay-Z reportedly share the tiny tattoo o theRoman numeral IV. Why? Allegedly they have a love a air with the number. Their birthdays are on the 4th just di er ent months. Theymarried on the 4th. Supposedly their daughter Blue Ivy has such a unique middle name because o the Roman numeral being squeezedinto its spelling. I all this is true, then I think thats a much better way to go about a shared tat than the blatant naming o your signifcantother. I B and Jigga split, not only are those tattoos eas ily concealed, but their meaning is too.

All I can say is just think be ore you ink. Its permanent. Its your body. People will see it. Make sure whatever you get, youre OK to haveFOREVER in some shape or orm. Easy as tat.
