College Students Spotted in Norman

follow@boydstreet

Joe Wilhite,Editor-in-Chief

Here they come. For all of us who have been lulled to sleep by the quiet hot summer, the college students are once again starting to invade Norman. The first to make their appearance are the Greeks preparing for rush. Then everyone else returns, making shopping at Target and Walmart a nightmare for a few days. I always love it when the students come back -- I’m glad I live in a town that is full of life and activity. But the biggest reason is that it means the start of OU football season is just around the corner. So let me be the first to say, WELCOME BACK STUDENTS, you’ve been missed!

>> Funny enough, as great as Barry Sanders was, he never actually beat OU. Trivia fact of the day.

Web 3.0 By AJlansdale

>> I’m getting the itch, man. Football’s almost back. Soon enough, we’ll hear about how the SEC is the superior conference of everything, Boise State’s credibility as a major power, and the overall fate of the Big 12. NCAA 13 can whet our appetites a bit early. It’s largely the same game as it was last year, with some technical advancements, but one new feature that stands out is their Heisman Challenge. Take one of ten historic Heisman winners and play through their season. Once you win the Heisman with them, you unlock them in Road to Glory and can play with them on any team. Hmm, that means OU can have a good quarterback again. No, I’m not the biggest fan of Landry Jones.

NCAA Football 13 // Football

Tony Hawks Pro Skater HDSkateboarding

>> I’ve always loved these games, before they got too over the top and gimmicky, with peripherals. The series is going back to the old school, though. An amalgamation of the first two games in the series rendered in HD graphics, this game is download only through XBLA and PSN. Don’t let it dissuade you, though: this game is as fun as the old ones were. Also, the music. In my opinion, that was always the best part of the old games, and half of the soundtrack is from the old games. The new half doesn’t disappoint, though. Also, online play is present, so if you want to go tear up the old warehouse level with your friends, here’s a chance to do it.

Piquing “Pinterest”A relatively unsung social media site, Pinterest has become a place where women can find recipes, nerdy things, or whatever interests them. What exactly is Pinterest, though, and is there stuff for men to care about here?

Recently, I’ve heard some of my female friends gush about how cool Pinterest is. My response the first time they mentioned it was, “What’s a Pinterest?” After hearing their explanation, particularly with promises of good food recipes and the like, I decided I at least needed to look into it. My impressions may or may not be typical, but here’s what I made of it.

Pinterest’s user base is definitely geared toward the interests of our lady friends: lots of shoes, hair, makeup and other things that aren’t usually entertaining to those with Y-chromosomes. Demographic data backs up this assumption: nearly 70% of Pinterest users are women. However, there are plenty of things that can appeal to all demographics, particularly the rapidly-growing “nerd” subculture. And I’m going to be honest, as a foodie, the various recipes and such they have pinned on the site look like something that might be more up my alley. Although I’d recommend against typing “cookies” into the search box on the site unless you want to be compelled to eat fattening things.

One of the biggest draws to Pinterest users is the “do-it-yourself” mode of thinking. For those who are interested, there are helpful tips on home repair, decor, furniture, clothing and wedding decorations. Admittedly, it’s not for everyone, but it’s at least worth looking into if you’re hurting for ideas on some project you have coming due.

One caveat about Pinterest is that it’s only by invitation only: one of your friends who uses it will have to send you an invite if you want to get in. Also, you’ll have to link either your Facebook or Twitter to it, although you can turn sharing off once it’s linked. For those who might like to keep their networks separate, or who don’t want people knowing they have a Pinterest account, it can be annoying. Also, chances are you may not give a crap about shoes or something that one of your friends will incessantly post, but it’s not really that different from sites like Tumblr in essence, or Facebook for that matter. As a whole, Pinterest isn’t a site that I’d frequent, but it’s something I wouldn’t be above checking out. At the very least, it’s another way to waste time instead of work, right?

Do You Have a Criminal Record?Talley, Crowder & Talley wants to inform you of the new law coming.

If you are like most college students, it is possible that you might have gotten into a little trouble during your college years. If you have ever had to go to court or hire an attorney, you already know that the legal system can prove a confusing situation. While your attorney probably did his best to get you out of trouble at the time, there is a good chance your record is not completely expunged. That means that when an employer does a background check on you they will be able to see your criminal record, and that might become a hindrance in finding a job or applying to graduate school. Why does any of this matter? Starting November 1, 2012, the expungement laws in Oklahoma are changing. The new law will affect anyone who has received a deferred sentence or had their case dismissed in an Oklahoma Court. The Oklahoma legislature has imposed a new two-year time period that will take effect after a deferred sentence expires that must

elapse before your record can be expunged. If you have received a ticket or a more serious charge and were placed on a deferred probation or your case was dismissed, this new law will add additional time before you are eligible to clear your record. You must act now, before the new laws take effect and your record will be available for anyone to view. Call or email us NOW for a free consultation to see if you qualify, to avoid an additional two years of a public record. Do not put your

future on hold, we are here to help you make sure your record will be clear forever.

2012 NFCA Hall of Fame inductee Patty Gasso’s greatest career moment? Being huddled together with her rain-drenched and sleep-deprived OU softball players after the women’s June 2012 World Series defeat to Alabama along with Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader, Sara Roberts.

“We were huddled together honoring God, while Alabama was celebrating their game victory just a few feet away.” There was no greater moment according to Patty than to be praising God in what could have been one of her most glowing career victories. “I called my team together, offering them comfort, praying with them and offering thanksgiving to God.”

Winning comes natural to 1031-340-02 record-winning Patty Gasso. She is the most winning women’s softball coach in the Big 12. Along with being a great softball coach, Patty is a proud mom to her two sons and wife to longtime sweetheart and husband Jim Gasso.

Patty’s mission is to touch the lives of the students she is entrusted with, lead the kids she has access to and plant seeds of faith when the opportunity presents itself. “Winning is a bonus,” according to Gasso.

In a world of cleats, ponytails and headbands, do celebrated female athletes have what it takes to be viewed as beautiful and glamorous? For me, as a style coach, I believe that every woman does, regardless of a strong interest in athletics and a life devoted to sports. Still, let’s check in with the green-eyed, blonde-haired, 5’-5” California beauty, otherwise known as NFCA Hall of Fame inductee and longtime OU woman’s softball coach Patty Gasso.

Coach kay: Patty, who are your style icons? Patty Gasso: Sandra Bullock’s character Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side. I like her classy and sophisticated ladylike style.

Ck: Pink or red?Gasso: (Laughing out loud) Red. For many reasons.

Ck: Mountains or ocean?Gasso: (She’s a California native.) Ocean!

Ck: Heels or flats?Gasso: Heels.

Coach Kay’s Sooner Style Coaching Moment (Cover Photo): Patty’s narrow heels prevent her from wearing pumps safely without her heel slipping out. A narrow pump, same size, makes the shoe tighter and comfortable around the toes. Solutions include a narrow peep-toe pump to give her toes needed space or a shoe with an adjustable or elastic heel strap. Stuart Weitzman, nude peep-toe pump $325, by The Webb.

Ck: Date night?Gasso: Staydate, with a home-cooked meal, hubby and a movie.Ck: The one thing that makes you feel feminine?Gasso: When I attend a banquet or an occasion where I have to dress to another level.

Ck: Speaking of which, what will you wear to your upcoming induction into the NFCA Hall of Fame in December?Gasso: I wasn’t sure until I tried on the blue lace dress by Nicole Miller, from The Webb, we used in the cover shot photo.

Coach Kay’s Sooner Style Coaching Moment (Cover Photo): The best necklines are ones which elongate and flatter your neck. The square neckline on the Nicole Miller dress, $420 enhances Patty’s beauty while complementing her petite and fit body frame.

Ck: You celebrated your 50th birthday this year, what are you wanting to project, with fashion, that you haven’t in previous decades?Gasso: Not to be worried about physical imperfections. I’ve learned that the more I try to hide things the bigger they look. I want to wear things that fit better. I want to express the acceptance that I have in who I am. I’m proud of who I am. This is me.

Ck: Nails. Long or short?Gasso: Short, only because that’s what works for my everyday life.

Page 13: Boyd Street Magazine Issue 15

Feature

Ck: Nails. Real or acrylic? Gasso: Real.

Coach Kay’s Sooner Style Coaching Moment: I highly recommend the latest trend, shellac. The biggest benefit to shellac is its 14-day flawless wear, incredible mirror shine, no chip and quick cure time; best suited for healthy natural nails like Patty’s. I recommend La Fleur Nails & Spa 1049 12th NE Ave, next to IHOP.

Ck: Lips. Are you a color girl or do you use a plain moisturizer stick?Gasso: Color, Origins Wild Flower.

Coach Kay’s Sooner Style Coaching Moment: No wonder this is a favorite of Patty’s, the color is a great medium pink-rose with a hint of brown, light gloss, scented with a minor note of mint enriched with rice bran oil, aloe, and vitamin E to keep lips hydrated and moist.

Ck: Perfume. Yes or no?Gasso: Yes. Romance by Ralph Lauren.

Coach Kay’s Sooner Style Coaching Moment: Romance is described as “sophisticated floral, touched with notes of rose.” A young but sophisticated alternative to Romance is Jean Baptiste 1717 (notes of hyacinth, jasmine, tuberose) by Niven Morgan, The Webb, $42.00

Ck: Earrings. Gotta ask, posts or dangly?Gasso: Dangly.

Ck: Best Day?Gasso: Attending church, BBQ with the family and hanging around the pool.

Ck: Big fashion splurge or extravagance?Gasso: One day I would like a diamond necklace with matching earrings.Ck: Jim, are you reading? (Hint, hint.)

Ck: Dress or pants?Gasso: Pants.

Ck: Current Norman favorite eatery?Gasso: Chuy’s Mexican.

Ck: Last book read?Gasso: Heaven is for Real.

Ck: Favorite gift?Gasso: Vacation to Israel.

Ck: Best memory?Gasso: My mom was a single mom, she worked as an administrative assistant. When she was off work she would coach me in sports. Women just didn’t do that back then, coach sports, I mean, except maybe tennis but she coached me in playing ball. I wanted to be just like my mom, making an impact with girls that have athletic interests, the way my mom impacted me.

Ck: Proudest moment?Gasso: Having my children (Patty has two sons 17and 24), and my 26-year marriage to Jim.

Ck: How did you meet your husband? What about you caught his eye?Gasso: I was on the putting green, he walked by, he said later that he liked my legs in my “dolphin” shorts.Ck: So, he liked your style?Gasso: Yeah, he liked the way I looked in my athletic wear.

Ck: That leads me to my next question. Best physical feature?Gasso: My legs. My tan.

Ck: Patty you spend a lot of time on the field and out in the sun, women are going to want to know what you use on your skin that keeps you looking so good.Gasso: Arbonne products.

Coach Kay’s Sooner Style Coaching Moment: You can reach Carleeta Nelson by e-mail at [email protected] for Arbonne skincare.

Ck: Patty, I have to ask. How do you feel about the upcoming induction into the NFCA Hall of Fame?Gasso: I have such respect for the individuals who have been inducted. As a coach they are my heroes; I have looked up to many of them, emulated their coaching styles, and have been inspired by their coaching techniques. It’s hard to imagine joining them, I have yet to recognize myself as one of them.

Ck: What makes you most nervous?Gasso: There are a lot of people that I am grateful to, whom I appreciate, and who have been with me all along the way; I have many people to thank. Remembering and giving credit to everyone (by name). I want to remember all of them.

Patty’s husband and I sat down for a few questions.

Ck: Jim, what makes Patty so special?Jim: Patty has always been an incredibly positive person. Her maiden name “Froehlich” means happy, and she is, she always is. I admire her work ethic, her team-oriented spirit, and her competitiveness. She is a fabulous mom and loyal wife. When God puts a person with these kinds of qualities in front of you, you can’t help but to stop and take notice.

Ck: Who is funnier, you or Patty?Jim: Me. I make her laugh more than she makes me laugh, when she stops laughing I’ll have something to worry about. I always want to make her happy.

All my client interviews begin with the simple question, “Who are your style icons?”A style icon is the person or people who influence our style in one way or another. Style icons are the individuals we look to for fashion cues, especially when we struggle to know what to wear or how to express ourselves through fashion. Fashion is communication. We are, whether we know it or not, communicating who we are, who we think we are, or who we want others to think we are via our style. Often our style icons physically look like we do, or at least, they resonate in some way to our personality. Style icons can be famous or not, male or female, deceased or living, though what they all have in common is impact. They impact our style and the style of others. That the NFCA has recognized Patty Gasso as an extraordinary coach constitutes her, in my book, to be a fashion icon.

Summer Sizzler & Music By MelGuapo

Whenst, one evening, I stumbled upon a Summer Sizzler…

PArt one, lUnA moth & yoUnG reAders:

Last night, whilst walking the Campus Corner of an evening, I stumbled upon a true Summer Sizzler. ‘Twas a breezy night, and nightfall’s first shadows covered the concrete canals of Asp and Buchanan Avenues. As I crested the corner of Boyd and Buchanan, turning north, and proceeded in that direction when I stumbled upon a group of musicians I knew well.

I was pleasantly surprised that they were a short while away from playing a live show at Brothers featuring four bands: Luna Moth (OK), Young Readers (Norman), Goodnight Neverland (touring band from Florida) and Magnificent Bird (Norman).

LUNA MOTHThe first act of the night was Luna Moth, who I had heard a lot about but hadn’t yet experienced live. As I approached this show and this article

(my first “live show review,” which to me meant something new with a different focus), I was particularly interested in closely reviewing both the sonic quality of the show

as well as the atmosphere of the venue.

The mix in the PA consisted primarily of the vocals, while the guitar and bass amps naturally filled out the room, all the while the drums being held back a bit to keep from overpowering the balance. It boiled down, basically, to a solid—if only a little rough—bar band kind of mix, but a bar band mix is meant to be rough. (Know that when I use the phrase “bar band mix,” I do so enthusiastically.)

Luna Moth performed particularly well dynamically. Not only were the three-piece acutely aware of where they stood concerning volume, but

also they were able to shift the mood and energy drastically but effortlessly between songs. There were moments in their set that allowed for reflection and moments that opened up the atmosphere to conversation, but primarily Luna Moth provided a tenor of fun and excitement.

The music could most accessibly be described as head-bobbing and foot-tapping indie pop tunes. I’m not necessarily proud of that description, but I do think it is the most practical that I can provide. The sun setting behind Luna Moth as they played set a pleasant atmosphere, although it would have been fun to have seen their set a couple of hours later with a few more drinks in me. A time when I might have grabbed a girl from her seat and taken her for a spin. (I would never do that.)

The set ended with a fast and tight rock-n-roll instrumental that left me excited for the night. The playlists between sets were immaculate. I asked around and found out that the sound was run and music was provided by Steve Boaz, who happens to both play in Magnificent Bird as well as work at Breathing Rhythm Studios based in Norman and located near Main and Crawford. Mel Guapo most definitely recommends this guy.

A two-part, cross-sectional and honest review of a recent live concert held at Brothers on Norman’s Campus Corner

Page 15: Boyd Street Magazine Issue 15

Expanding and exploring with the Young Readers sound, Jordan Herrera—the front man and creator behind the band—was joined by members of Defining Times (Alberto Roubert on drums), The Gentle Art of Floating (Eric Gorman on bass) and Magnificent Bird (Kyle Reid on guitar). The mix was much more forward for Young Readers, both cleaner and more balanced as well; less of an indie pop sound and more of a full Nashville session band kind of sound. Herrera’s emotion and slightly thinner vocal styling’s contrasted perfectly with the sonic makeup of the new band. The rhythm section provides strength to the sound, giving the live music bed the support to properly display the vocal emotion, with the guitar lending perfectly to the sounds effect.Loud heartfelt applause met every song’s end. I was halfway through a pitcher. The dynamics in energy weren’t as broad as Luna Moth, as the Young Readers sound is both more serious and weighty. The soaring and epic session-player arrangements were solidly constructed and made possible by the flawless performances by the players. I personally hope to see this outfit stick together for some time. They complement each other well stylistically, energetically and sonically, and if this is only their first performance together (which it was), then like a fine wine, it will only age and become a richer collective with time. The trick with a group of players like these is that they’re all basically session players with their own primary acts, which means focus is hierarchical for each player, making it tricky to line up shows. Either way, be sure to see them as soon as possible.Find out more and purchase music digitally at youngreaders.bandcamp.com

GOODNIGHT NEVERLANDThe only non-local act of the evening, Goodnight Neverland, was a vocally prevalent three-piece that combined a heavier emotional element with the confines of an indie rock pallet: stiffer beats and punchy bass on a bed of delay-laden melodic guitar riffs punctuated by twisting and difficult to pin down vocal work. At this point in the evening, either the mix was too loud or I am too much a man of comfort (I prefer sweatpants to pants pants and a La-Z-Boy to a desk chair, so you be the judge). The front man’s voice trailed off into watery spaceways as he slipped in and out of a twisty falsetto and a full-lung belting voice. Though the mix was loud, it was both well-balanced and well-crafted.That’s when I realized I had finished my first pitcher. I had a hunch that I could smell things that most human beings could only think.

MAGNIFICENT BIRD Magnificent Bird began their set with a dramatic instrumental led by a female violinist. The mood evoked by their music was darker, as if they were dealing in the more complex side of human experience, led by an earnest, quieter and searching vocal performance. Applause was generous throughout their set, and aptly so. Backing tracks were employed for a few of the tunes, supplying a melodic but slightly eerie arrangement of staccato strings (accompanied by the violin on stage). Unfortunately the soundman most familiar with the rig was playing drums in the band, and the second-stringer didn’t have quite the same control as

Steve Boaz. They finished the set strong, however, and to great support from the crowd.

CONCLUSIONThat’s when I noticed that there was something different, a change in the air. Suddenly I realized that it was already migration season: the time when college students begin filling the city bars and restaurants and coffee shops. And while I will miss the extra space that summer provides around town and on the roads, it is good to have them back. It feels like a fresh rain. It feels great to have a rejuvenated scene again, freshly full of what will be the local wildlife for the next nine months. And I mean that in the best way possible.Although I am always happy when the school year ends and one can breathe in the streets of Norman again, it’s always refreshing and hopeful when our city is injected with a sudden bolt of youth and energy. This is the seasonal rhythm and one of the shining characteristics of our great city, and I hope that great shows like the one I stumbled upon and keep meeting eye-to-eye with that youthful presence into the fall semester.
