21ST CENTURY LEARNING CENTER GRANT

"I look forward to making a robot that will change the world.” Dimitri Williams The Boys & Girls Club of Taylor County partnered with the Taylor County School District and was awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. Through this funding, our kids enjoy Project Based Leaning under the direction of a Florida certified teacher. Project Based Learning allows our kids to enjoy engaging hands on projects that is disguised learning. Currently, the kids are enjoying a LEGO robotics project. The project requires that each youth apply for various positions such as, the builder, manufacturer, and engineer.

“I am looking forward to applying for the LEGO Robotics engineer position.” Perris Smith

“I am looking forward to being the LEGO builder.” Trashawn White

“I’ve learned about how touch sensors work and make robots move.” Styles Williams

“I think robotics will be really fun and I am good with computers.” Ella Holley

The Boys & Girls Club of Taylor County has a structured homework hour that aligns with the kid’s regular school day. Every day starts with a grade appropriate math drill to support memorization of addition and multiplication facts. Additionally, the kids study their spelling words and have time to complete their class homework. All of our classrooms have Accelerated Reader books for their appropriate grade. This homework time was designed by our Curriculum Specialist, Ms. White. Ms. White worked with the school district to create a homework plan that is most beneficial to support the education of our kids.

The Boys & Girls Club is getting a brand new building, thanks to a partnership with the City of Perry. The new building will allow for one unified club in the City of Perry. The brand new facility is being built especially for our club kids. In 2015, the Boys & Girls Club of Taylor County turns 25 years old. The Club is well established in the community and the new building is a perfect way to celebrate our 25th year. We are going to need the facility to prepare us for our next 25 years.

After School Dinner Program

I am thankful for the food they give us at the club and I’m glad they do this because some kids don’t eat at home. The meal offered at the club really does brighten up our day.

-Jada Ellis

I am thankful for the food that the club provide for me and my club family. I really want to say the food good and all your blessings are coming to you.

READY, SET, SPARKBY: LINDSEY WEBB 5TH GRADE HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO SPARK? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT SPARK IS? SPARK IS AN ACTIVITY WE DO HERE AT THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB. IT IS ALMOST LIKE P.E. BUT MORE FUN! WE USUALLY GO INTO THE GYM OR SOMETIMES WE USE THE PLAYGROUND AREA.IF WE DO SPARK INSIDE WE DO SOME EXERCISES AND SOME RUNNING DRILLS. THEN WE PLAY A GAME. SOMETIMES IT’S A BASEBALL GAME CALLED BONKERS BALL, OR FREAKY FREEZE WHICH I REALLY LIKE, AND ALSO MARCHING BAND. MY FAVORITE GAME WE PLAY IS ARTILLERY BALL. YOU ARE RUNNING A LOT THROWING THE BALL TRYING TO KNOCK THE OTHER TEAMS PIN DOWN. YOU JOB IS TO GUARD YOUR PIN AND NOT LET THE OTHER TEAM HIT YOU OR YOUR PIN. WE ALWAYS BEG MS. DANA TO LET US PLAY THIS GAME SINCE IT’S OUR FAVORITE.ANOTHER PART OF THE SPARK PROGRAM TEACHES US ABOUT TAKING CARE OF OUR BODIES AND EATING HEALTHIER FOODS. WE LEARNED ABOUT SELF-IMAGE AND HOW TO DEAL WITH NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE. WE LEARNED IT IS IMPORTANT TO SET GOALS AND GUESS WHAT I SET A GOAL AND ACCOMPLISHED IT! I MADE THE DANCE TEAM AND I AM PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT IT.YOU PROBABLY HEARD OF SPARK OR MAYBE YOU WERE IN IT ONCE AND DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT. NOW THAT I TOLD YOU WHAT SPARK IS DON’T YOU WANT TO JOIN??
