Company: East Bay Psychiatric Group & Pacific Cognition Center

Year founded: 2000

Bishop Ranch Location: BR11

Business type: I am the founder and Medical Director of the East Bay Psychopharmacology Group (EBPG), which over the last twenty years grew to a group practice with five psychiatrists. Our physicians evaluate and treat patients of all ages for psychiatric and psychological disorders.

The Pacific Cognition Center (PCC) adds strength to the psychiatric group with educational and neuropsychological services. At the Center we screen, test and treat the entire range of cognitive problems, including disorders of attention, memory, language, processing and executive function.

The two groups work closely together. Our psychiatrists are qualified to diagnose and treat psychiatric and cognitive disorders in all populations. We believe ours is the only group practice of its kind in the East Bay and outside of university medical centers.

Business Philosophy: Most of us go for yearly physicals and take our cars for maintenance, but pay attention to our brain only when it

begins to fail - too late, in my opinion. We need a yearly “mental” and to learn how the brain breaks and heals.

Biggest Challenge: The challenge and goal is to dispel the stigma and myths about mental illness and health; to explain what modern psychiatric medicine can do to help live a less stressful and more vibrant life.

Favorite Aspect of Your Work: Medicine is a profession that attracts people who get joy from helping others. We have a great team of colleagues and staff. I look forward each day to working with the bright, dedicated people in our office.

Least Favorite Task: Paperwork. In particular, fighting with medical insurance companies that deny medications and services to my patients. In medical school, no one told me that I would spend one hour every day arguing with bureaucrats.

Source(s) of Inspiration: My fearless wife, Charan, whose motto is “if you can’t find it, make it.” Charan is an engineer who designs communication satellites during the day. At home, she writes engineering and children’s books, creates computer animations, studies Russian and collects pop-up books.

What Makes You Excel? Intellectual curiosity. This Fall I am participating in the Visiting Scholar program at UCSF Memory and Aging Center to learn about degenerative brain disorders of the elderly. With a growing Alzheimer’s disorder epidemic, we must be prepared to take care of these patients.

Suggestions for Young Professionals: Life is too short for a full-time job.

A Goal You Still Want to Achieve: I am trying to bring psychiatry into realm of medicine, away from its lackluster past.

Favorite Pastime: Driving with my wife to the Sierras, listening to music or audio-books.

How Do You Handle Stress: One problem at a time.

Favorite Vacation Spot: Our lake cabin near Placerville, California.

Favorite East Bay Restaurant: Bosphorus, a Turkish restaurant in Walnut Creek.

Favorite Music: I can listen to La Traviata every day.

Favorite Cause: Early education and teaching children to love math.

EventsMy Own Power - Winning Building Energy conservation happens person by person, office by office, building by building. THANK YOU for doing your part to help Bishop Ranch remain one of California’s most sustainable workplaces.

Congratulations to 2527 Camino Ramon for achieving the greatest energy savings, 15,000 kWh, enough to power an electric car for over

70,000 miles! Collectively, the efforts across all of Bishop Ranch have realized a 1% savings. That may not sound like a lot, but it’s enough energy for about 26 California homes!

The month-long energy-saving project may be over, but energy efficiency must persist. Bishop Ranch will implement additional projects to improve the sustainability of this property. Please continue to save with simple acts, and help co-workers to save as well.

Using less starts with your own power – Thank you again for saving!
