The snow came in time to make an extra white Christmas, but also for eight-year-old Anderson Freilinger to earn a few extra bucks before Christmas. He was out helping his father, Scott, shovel the sidewalk on Saturday morning. Scott said that Anderson already used some of the money he earned to buy a present for his sister.

Th e East Coulee School Mu-seum received a gift from the Drumheller Family Fund to warm their heart and warm their building. Th e East Coulee School Mu-seum has been without heat since January when its ancient coal-fi re heating system gave up. Over the last year they have been focusing their fundraising on replacing the heating sys-tem. On Th ursday the Drum-heller Family Fund presented the Museum with $9,930. Manager for the East Cou-lee School Museum Owen Th ompson said this was by far the biggest step they have taken in raising the funds needed to heat the building. “It is like Christmas came early,” said a grateful Th omp-son. He explains the museum will need about $50,000 for the re-placement and over the last half-year they have instigated a

concert series to help raise the funds. Other events including a family dance, and the quaint Christmas in the Coulee, all dedicated funds to the capital project. Brent Noland, president of the Dinosaur Valley Heritage society says they are grateful for the donation, and he hopes the funds they received this week will provide a spark to get the fundraising eff ort rolling. Th ey are looking into some grant programs in the new year. Th ompson said the will con-tinue the concert series into 2013. Th e Drumheller family Fund was established in 1994. Th e Drumheller Family donated an endowment to the Royal Tyr-rell Museum Cooperating Soci-ety to be focused on youth. Th e Co-operating Society invested the endowment with the Cal-gary Foundation and each year they invest the net revenue of the interest on to a community initiative.

Crossword

SudokuHere’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the num-bers 1 through 9 must ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

If all goes well, a new playground will be springing up in the Kinsmen Park in Greentree next year. Th e Drumheller Kinsmen Club has begun the process after residents of the area contacted them about the possibility of building a new playground for children in the community. “It was a Kinsemen Park previously, but the equipment got old and it was taken out. I was approached by a community member asking us to redo the park,” said Drumheller Kinsmen Club president, Ashley Wright. At the moment, the Kinsmen are collecting funds and grants and determining what equip-ment they will need for the playground. Th e cost for new equipment can be high, with a swing set costing $7,000 for example. “We’re in the preliminary stages of what the cost will be. We’ve set aside some of our funds, had a pretty generous donation from Cenovus, and we’re in the process of applying for match-ing grants from the province. We’re hoping to get construction going next year,” said Wright. “You could spend anywhere between $70,000 to $100,000 quite easily.” Should everything come together, it is hoped the playground will be complete next summer. “Th is is what the Kinsmen Club has always been about,” said Kinsemen. “We want to make it a great playground once again.” To get involved or donate, contact Wright at 403-823-1870.

The Drumheller Kinsmen Club are hoping to turn part of the bare fi eld on Cedar Crescent in Greentree into a bustling playground. Residents of the community approached the Kinsmen regarding a playground. The Kinsmen are currently

investigating what equipment they need and are collecting funds to make a new playground a reality next summer.

It wasn’t quite how the Drumheller Dragons wanted to end the fi rst half of their season. On Th ursday, De-cember 20, the Dragons hosted the Fort McMur-ray Oil Barons in what turned into a tense game for players and fans alike. Th e Dragons, though pouring shot after shot on the Oil Barons’ net,

couldn’t fi nd the back of the net. Th e Dragons skated into the holiday break with a 1-0 shoot-out loss. For most of the game both teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate. Neither were many pow-er play opportunities for either team in a relative-ly penalty free game. After three periods of play, the teams went to a fi ve minute over time period with a score of

0-0. Th e Dragons man-aged to send four shots at the Oil Barons net, but came up empty. It was a goalies’ game and both were playing extremely well. Th e game was eventu-ally settled in a shootout. Th e Oil Barons were up fi rst and sent out Doug Jones, who had been a Dragon from 2009 to September of this year. In what seemed to have been ripped from a Hollywood script, Jones scored the game winning goal against his former team. Th e three Dragons shooters that followed couldn’t pen-etrate the solid Oil Bar-ons goaltending. However, the Dragons head into the break with considerable momen-tum. Since November 11, the Dragons have won 12 of 17 games and have won three of their last fi ve. Th ey are also poised to

earn a spot in the play-off s this season. Th ey are currently in fourth place in the AJHL southern division with 41 points and are only four points

behind the second place Camrose Kodiaks. Th e Dragons will re-turn to action on Janu-ary 2, when they head to Fort McMurray for a

rematch against the Oil Barons. Th ey will then return to Drumheller for their fi rst home game on January 9 against the Okotoks Oilers.
