Brampton Manor Academy News “Outstanding” (Ofsted 2012)
Success through Effort and Determination Issue 38: December 2017
Brampton Manor Academy, Roman Road, London E6 3SQ 020 7540 0500
Dear Parent/Guardian This has been an incredibly successful year at Brampton Manor. As we approach 2018, it is important to take stock and reflect on how we have performed against some of our core goals:
We continue to be an outstanding educational provider in the region and beyond. 2017 GCSE provisional data shows that our students achieved a progress 8 score of +1.21. This makes us the 10th highest performing school in the country, out of over 4000 schools! Here is a link to the provisional tables on the government’s website: https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/schools-by-type step=phase®ion=316&geographic=la&phase=secondary&for=secondary
The final tables will be published in January 2018.
Our 2017 GCE A level results are equally impressive, with the students achieving an average of grade A-. The vast majority of our students continue to secure places at the Russell Group Universities (including Oxbridge) to study the most competitive courses like Economics, Medicine and Law.
In September, we welcomed 400 students into year 7 and 310 students into year 12. These students have settled well into life at Brampton Manor and have become integral members of the Brampton family.
The parent information evenings we held in September and October for parents in all year groups was very successful and the feedback we received from you was extremely positive.
Our reputation as an excellent provider of education continues to be reflected in the numbers of our first choice preferences for admissions into year 7. We are undoubtedly the most oversubscribed school in Newham and are delighted that parents continue to have confidence in us.
Our achievements in sports, drama and the Arts remain impressive. Our students have won numerous competitions and continue to participate in prestigious events such as debating with students from some of the top independent schools in the country.
Our staff work force is impressive. Our staff work very hard to provide tremendous support and guidance to our students, which is reflected in the outstanding progress that they make.
Our partnership with you continues to grow and the proportion of you attending school events such as drama and music performances, parents’ evenings etc continues to grow. We are a listening school and your feedback will only help us to improve further and serve your children better. Please share your views with us. You can do this by phone, making an appointment to visit the school or sending us an email – [email protected]
We thank Ms Bhunjun and Mr Sam-Lock and other staff leaving us at the end of this term for their contributions to the school and wish them the very best in their future endeavours. 2018 will be another amazing year of success at Brampton Manor. I wish you and your family, a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year. Dr Dayo Olukoshi, OBE, Executive Principal

On-line safety The internet on the whole is an inspiring and positive place, but this does not mean that there are not dangers. You may feel that your child is more skilled with technology than you are. However, they still need your advice and protection on how to keep themselves safe. Below are some questions in regards to four key categories, to help you assess the risks of the internet:
Conduct: How is your child behaving on-line? Are they sharing too much information?
Content: Are the activities they are doing age-inappropriate? Is the content they are viewing reliable?
Contact: Who is your child talking to on-line? Do they know who they are? Do you know who they are?
Commercialism: Are there any hidden costs in the apps and games they are using? Is the advertising appropriate on the websites they are visiting?
If you are not sure of some of the answers or are not happy with some of the answers and would like further support and information please visit the school website.
Year 12 Economists at Bloomberg for a Career Readiness Workshop On Wednesday 18th October, Bloomberg invited 25 students to their London office for a career readiness workshop. The day consisted of an introduction to Bloomberg, CV and Interview Master Classes, 1-1 Mock Interviews, Networking and a tour of the company. It was amazing to see how engaged everyone was throughout the day and the
overall feedback that we received from the Bloomberg team was phenomenal! Some made such a great impression that they were even able to secure the contact details from some of the Bloomberg employees. Education extends far beyond the four corners of Brampton Manor Academy and events like this help to enrich our student’s learning experience, whilst developing their skill-set and broadening their network. All of which will be a key differentiator in the success of their future academic and professional careers. The Economics Department Feedback on the day: "Honestly, I had a great experience at the Bloomberg workshop. I learnt a lot in terms of how to make a lasting impression on an interviewer that has received hundreds of applications for the same role. My interviewer Pedro explained that this can be done by showing your key values through your personal stories; as it helps to illustrate your hunger for the role as this is more likely to make a lasting impression in an interview situation. Pedro also emphasised the importance of gaining work experience so as to make your CV look more complete, while also condensing the CV to a page to ensure that points are clear and concise. In addition to this he shared some practical, helpful thoughts about the career I am aspiring to. All in all, the Bloomberg career readiness workshop, from the interviews, to the tours in the day, was very enlightening. It was inspiring to see the firm in action!" Anthony Mgbeike "I overall had a positive experience after attending this workshop as I have furthered my knowledge about how to succeed at interview. I have also learned tips about how to improve my own personal CV. It was interesting and extremely helpful to receive advice from Bloomberg Employees about how to be fully engaged with our future careers, as well as gain advice on how to alter our CV’s or our approach to interviews and how to gain a positive response from employers." - Mahfuza Yasmin "I just wanted to say thank you to Bloomberg for providing us with such an opportunity. I definitely feel more confident about my CV and interviewing skills now and I really enjoyed seeing behind the scenes of a major company." - Mazhar Alam "It was an amazing experience that I’ll be sure to remember for a while!" - Tyrell Duku
International Computational Thinking Challenge Congratulations to Romero Featherstone, William Apau, Sayed Shafi and Emma Han Lieng, who achieved the highest distinctions (top 10%) in the UK Bebras Computing Challenge. The competition takes place yearly in over 40 countries and is facilitated by Oxford University and Google. The performances of Romero and William were so impressive that they have been invited to participate in the TCS Oxford Computing Challenge in March, which aims to stretch and develop the most able Computer Science students nationally. In total, 15 students achieved certificates of distinction with a further 14 achieving certificates of merit. Mr Coppen, Head of Computing
UKMT Senior Maths Challenge On 7th November, Year 12 students had the opportunity to take part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The students achieved wonderful results, with 2 students obtaining Gold certification, 10 achieving Silver certification and 26 achieving Bronze certification. LSE Public Lecture Review You are being tracked, evaluated and sold: analysis on digital inequalities. We attended a lecture at the internationally renowned LSE, which gave us a positive experience of what university life is like. The lecture was about how internet companies and social media apps track your usage and how this data is used commercially. The main points of the lecture were:
Every individual is being tracked and evaluated and this data is being sold to other companies and governments. This occurs faster than the speed of light.
You do not need to be on social media to be tracked as simply visiting a website which has a widget of the social media app, allows you to be tracked.
They did research on how easily data can be accessed on Facebook and how people who buy the data can categorise you depending on the social circle you have and your interests. This lets companies evaluate you and place a net worth on you as an individual.
After the lecture, the chair opened the floor to questions and the discussion showed people’s perspectives on the issue. One of the question was “is it too late for us to prevent ourselves from being tracked?”. This was interesting as it showed us the extent to which we are vulnerable to the system and how far it has spread. By Mahfuza Yasmin and Himani Kumar, Year 12 Economists
We Are Writers
This term, some of the Year 7
students took part in the
Scholastic ‘We Are Writers’
programme. This literacy
project is a wonderful way to
inspire students to write and
gives them the opportunity to
see their writing published in a real book. The library teamed
up with the English Department to encourage students to
create a piece of creative writing themed around childhood
memories. In the end over 200 students submitted their
stories and they were published in a book for students to
purchase. Students were thrilled to be able to hold their very
own book in their hands. Ms Vevers, School Librarian
