Overview
bull The Naming and Signage Committee was established to recommend names for
assets such as parks valleys storm water management ponds and pathways
bull The purpose of this report is to seek approval for the 46 candidate names
contained in this report at the locations shown in Appendix 1
Recommendations
1 THAT the report from Karl Walsh Director of Community Design Parks Planning amp Development dated November 15 2011 to the Planning Design and Development
Committee meeting of December 7 2011 re Proposed Names for Municipal Assets (Fall 2011) mdash Wards 4 6 8 9 10 (File MOO-Naming) be received and
2 THAT the 46 candidate names listed in this report for the locations shown in Appendix 1 be approved
Background
Since its inception the Naming and Signage Committee has received approval from Council Committees for over 120 asset names thereby commemorating early settlers historical associations cultural heritage regional events native history environmental features prominent citizens and significant firsts in Brampton These approvals have simplified identification for purposes such as running recreational programs for
maintaining the sites for emergency services response and for promoting the Citys identity

Current Situation
With direction from the Naming and Signage Committee staff completed assessments of each candidate asset to ensure suitability for naming Appropriate names were identified by heritage researchers retained by the City staff Heritage Coordinators and members of the public The names resulting from this assessment are presented below
for approval with the recommended locations shown on the context map in Appendix 1 Each of the proposed names has been reviewed by Emergency Services and passes all current naming criteria and therefore their use pose no known risk

Staff expects to be reporting back to Committee in the first part of 2012 with another list of names and protocols developed by the Naming amp Signage Committee for the future naming of assets thereby further reducing the backlog of approximately 320 assets to be named
Corporate Implications
The use of historically and culturally significant themes for the naming of municipal assets is another effective means to help ensure that Bramptons heritage is identified and commemorated This practice is compatible with the ongoing Heritage Program the Flower City Strategy and other key initiatives
Conclusion
Approval of the names presented in this report will result in the commemoration of 46 more people and locations of historical significance to Brampton while reducing confusion on the part of staff residents and emergency responders
