centers

Riverbed Steelhead EX + Granite

Riverbed Granite solution enables users and applications in branch office locations to write to and access centrally managed storage while maintaining local disk performance. Riverbed Granite solution enables faster branch access to data center deployed SANs, and it effectively eliminates the IT organization’s need to provision and maintain dedicated storage resources in branch offices.

The Riverbed Granite solution is deployed in conjunction with Riverbed Steelhead appliances and consists of two components:

• Granite Core – A physical or virtual appliance that resides in the data center alongside centralized storage

• Granite Edge – A module that runs on a Steelhead EX appliance in the branch office

Granite Core mounts iSCSI logical unit numbers (LUNs) provisioned in the data center and shares the storage resources with branch offices running the Granite Edge module. Granite Edge virtually presents one or more iSCSI targets in the branch, which can be utilized by services and systems running both within the Riverbed Virtual Services Platform (VSP) and externally to the Steelhead EX appliance. Granite Core inspects mounted file systems and is able to proactively stream data to the branch. This capability allows data from centralized storage to be available wherever and whenever it

6

is needed. Through asynchronous block-based write acceleration, Granite Edge ensures that data created in branch office locations is securely stored in the data center.

Figure 3: Granite Core and Granite Edge high-level network topology

Use case: Branch office file server with Steelhead EX + Granite

A typical use case for file server implementation in a branch office environment using Steelhead EX + Granite appliances is when a customer has to perform file sharing at many remote sites and wants to have local performance, 100% uptime even during WAN outages, and wants to constantly protect the data at a centralized location in case of disaster at any of the branch offices. The ability to centrally provision new file servers and new file shares, and centrally perform regular backups and centrally monitor the overall infrastructure is also an important aspect of this use case.

Key solution benefits

The key solution benefits are as follows.

• Enable consolidation: Data is consolidated in the data center where backup can be done centrally and where skilled IT storage personnel resides and can manage and configure the storage. This eliminates the need for data backup or replication software and hardware in the branch. In case of a disaster, data can be streamed quickly, resuming operation in the order of minutes. For durability and optimization, Storwize V7000 and SAN technology enables consolidation and virtualization of storage in the data center. High availability of the data is achieved through features such as IBM FlashCopy® backups, Metro Mirror, and Global Mirror disaster recovery features in the data center. Third-party storage already existing in the data center can be reused and further optimized through Storwize V7000 and SVC virtualization capabilities.

• Instant branch provisioning and recovery: Growing organizations that need to rapidly provision new locations to support dynamic business requirements can quickly establish service wherever and whenever needed. Servers are quickly and easily booted over-the-WAN in as little as one minute. In the event of a disaster at the branch office, services can be quickly re-provisioned to continue business operations.

• Resilient to WAN outages: Though the IT infrastructure has been completely centralized, remote office workers to have local access to data even when the WAN link to the office goes down.

• Centralize data protection: Services and data are protected and secured in the data center, using the same tools and methodologies applied to all corporate data, eliminating the need to purchase, install, and manage a backup solution in the branch office. This can reduce recovery time objectives (RTOs) and gain better recovery point objectives (RPOs).

• Safeguard data: With storage in the branch, data is exposed to risk. Steelhead EX + Granite products enable state-of-the-art authentication and encryption to ensure the security of data assets while in flight from the data center and in-use in the branch.

• Simplify management: By eliminating the need to maintain and manage stand-alone servers and storage in branch offices, Steelhead EX + Granite products significantly reduces administration overhead and costs. A single appliance in the branch is easier to support and by centralizing storage, data management activities can take place in the data center. Branch-based IT personnel and fly-and-fix missions are no longer required.

• Better storage efficiency: You can enable storing up to five times more active primary data in the same physical disk space using IBM Real-time Compression.

• Continuous application availability: You can enable near-continuous availability of applications through dynamic migration.

Page 10: Branch Office Enablement Solution with IBM ... - RiverbedBranch... · Branch office enablement solution with IBM storage ... Volume Controller to deliver an enterprise-class ... •

Branch office enablement solution with IBM storage systems and Riverbed Granite technologies

8

• Advanced data management capability: The solution provides easy-to-use data management, designed with a graphical user interface (GUI) and point-and-click system management capabilities.

• Better data protection: The solution supports Metro Mirror and Global Mirror for replicating data synchronously or asynchronously between systems for backup efficiency.

Solution architecture

Figure 5: The lab solution architecture diagram

Figure 5 illustrates the lab setup of Steelhead EX + Granite solution enablement with IBM Storwize V7000 or IBM Storwize V7000 Unified storage systems and IBM System Storage SVC deployed in the data center. Provisioning storage from IBM Storwize V7000 and IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller

This section follows the setup process and shows how to create volumes and make them accessible from the host. The following steps are required to complete the basic setup of your environment.

1. Create new volumes

2. Map volumes to the newly created iSCSI host

Note: This section assumes that the IBM Storwize V7000 storage system or IBM System SAN Volume Controller had correctly configured the internal storage disk drives using different Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) levels and different optimizing strategies.

For more information on how to configure the IBM Storwize V7000 system storage pools, refer the chapter 7 of IBM Redbooks title Implementing the IBM Storwize V7000 at: ibm.com/redbooks/redbooks/pdfs/sg247938.pdf

Create new volumes

By default, all volumes that are created in IBM Strowize V7000 storage systems are stripped across all the available managed disks (MDisks) in one storage pool. The GUI for the IBM Storwize V7000 system provides mainly the following preset selections.

• Generic: A stripped volume that is fully provisioned.

• Thin-provision: A stripped volume that is space efficient. There are choices to help determine how much space is fully allocated initially and how large the volume is able to grow.

• Mirror: The stripped volume consists of two striped copies and is synchronized to protect against loss of data if the underlying storage pool of one copy is lost.

• Thin-mirror: Two synchronized copies. Both are thin provisioned.

Summary IBM Storwize V7000 Unified is a powerful storage system that enables storage virtualization, consolidation, and automated tiering for businesses of all sizes. The system combines the right mix of hardware and software components to help IT organizations optimize storage efficiency, improve application availability, and ensure high utilization of valuable storage resources, all from a single point of control. In addition, it consolidates block and file data storage into a single system, reducing complexity and costs.

Riverbed Granite appliances enable the complete consolidation of edge servers and storage to the data center, while projecting applications and data to edge locations where they perform as if they were local. The Granite solution enables a global storage infrastructure by intelligently accelerating storage across the WAN, enabling new efficiency with data management, protection, and recovery while ensuring performance at the edge. With Granite, organizations can:

• Reduce costs by eliminating storage from branch offices.

• Improve management efficiency as maintenance and backup can take place at the data center.

• Recover faster and more effectively as the data is stored centrally, protected more frequently, and can be streamed to the branch office as needed.

• Improve security of data assets through centralization and state-of-the-art encryption capabilities.

Tight integration between IBM Storwize V7000 storage system and Riverbed Granite provides simple configuration and consolidated management while also increasing performance and improving efficiency at the data center and eliminates additional storage and systems at the branch office. This in turn, substantially reduces total cost of ownership (TCO) for enterprises.
