Shan-Shan Guo,Brand Management Office

This summer, as people took up the ice bucket challenge, one movie star scooped up the water from toilet at home and poured it on his head. As he pointed out, the water that many people drink in this world is more unclean than the water from his home toilet. He is Matt Damon and also one of the founding members of water.org, a partner organization of the exhibition "Run for Water, Water for Run" recently curated by Delta Electronics Foundation.

Rising temperature from global warming has made flooding and draught more severe. However, issues caused by "water" have mostly been ignored. Delta has long been paying attention to environmental issues and the Foundation is also devoted to the environmental education about climate change. It takes special cooperation with many international NGO's to make this exhibition possible. We hope that the visitors would get to know about hydrological changes and the impact brought by global warming and see how cherished water should be. This exhibition was well-received since its start and also helped enhance the image of the Delta brand. There will be an in-depth coverage in this bi-monthly issue.

Recently, Delta Research Center (DRC) introduced many of their achievements and the future outlook through an internal seminar. One highlight is the platform for service design and automation that will help Delta move toward becoming a provider of integrated solutions capable of solving issues more effectively for customers. We also interviewed colleagues from DRC and will take you to learn more about core features and values of this platform.

Also, with Delta's transformation, there have been substantial changes in the type of work for Information Technology (IT) team in the past two years. The team came forward from behind the scene and created a service-oriented IT environment to assist with the overall enhancement of Delta's operations. Under "Brand People" of this issue, Chief IT Officer Mr. James Ju gave an introduction on the four major trends in IT and how Delta is responding as a result.

At the end of last year, the Brand News covered the project initiated by IABG for Product Identity (PI). This project aims to enhance users' impression of the Delta products and hence accumulate the image and value of the overall Delta brand. After about one year of hard work, the IABG's industrial design team completed the project and proposed specific rules on its implementation. We will share about the achievement of their hard work in "Brand Academy". There are more exciting stories and you are welcome to take a closer look.

Moving toward being a provider of integrated solutionsAn introduction to the "Service Design and Automation" platform by DRC< Text by Brand Management Office >

Under push by CTO Thomas Li, Delta Research Center (DRC) utilized the DRC Open House and workshop in July to introduce recent achievements and future outlooks of the DRC. To share the exciting content with our colleagues, this issue of brand news specially starts with "Service Design and Automation" to introduce the important platform that helps Delta move toward becoming a provider of integrated solutions.

Building a customized solution for customers

In the past, Delta often had internal discussions about how to identify differences between device, sub-system, system, and solution, as well as whether some products and services should be considered as systems or solutions. Thus, everybody has been striving to find a common definition and standard to serve as a basis for the "Service Design". "The core feature of 'service design and automation (SDA)' is to help Delta 'more effectively' solve problems for customers," DRC colleague Ms. Amber Lee said.

Special Report

For simply providing products to customers or system integrators, we only offer sub-systems and systems. However, if professional know-how from the field of application can be customized or integrated along the process to offer higher value to customers or system integrators, it can be said that what we provide are solutions. Through systematic procedures that combine Delta's products with know-how from domain experts, we got the view from a perspective of life cycle during the cooperation with our customers, in order to solve various existing or potential issues faced by them and offer higher attached value at every point of opportunity. That is the goal the SDA platform hopes to achieve.

Make customers unwilling to leave Delta

For instance, if the customer is the patient seeking medical help and Delta colleagues are doctors offering diagnosis, a systematic procedure to diagnose and analyze information given will enable doctors to offer prescriptions that might be able to simultaneously solve health issues on several different angles. If causes of symptoms could be effectively diagnosed for the patient every time, we will of course become what they call the famous doctors who will have a long line of patients seeking help.

"In fact, the ultimate goal of developing this platform is to make customers unwilling to leave Delta," said Mr. WC Tien from our Singapore office via teleconference, with a kind and firm tone. In the middle of the year, to understand challenges and troubles every business group encountered when developing integrated solutions, the SDA team conducted a series of interviews that have gathered voice of many front-line managers and colleagues. They unanimously think that what is missing and lacking is to find a domain expert capable of just-in-time consultation and an expert system that features transparency of information and management of know-hows. This is also the goal that the SDA team strives for.

Moving toward being a provider of integrated solutions - Demonstration of Delta's competitive advantage

Why does Delta need to move toward becoming a provider of integrated solutions? During our interview, Ms. Lee discovered one commonality for all business units of Delta that most of them set their focus of Delta's value on cost-performance (CP). "Being just oriented on CP value actually may not be good for long-term business growth of enterprise," she pointed out. "To develop integrated solutions with Delta's core values matters much more."

"Becoming a provider of integrated solution can rather widen the gap with our competitors. Through the expert system, an innovated solution that improves as time goes could be developed," Mr. Tien continued. For Delta, becoming this provider is surely vital to long-term development of the enterprise. In addition to getting an in-depth understanding of professional know-how for every field of application, which is helpful for developing new products or services, the integrated sales across business units would be attained, injecting dynamics for expansion of Delta's business. However, in the past several years, we did not have such a corresponding tool and management platform.

Highly-integrated frontline and backstage

SDA team design solution service from a lifecycle perspective, which includes the following stages. I. Initial client engagement and design phase - offers business colleagues a complete set of business tools that can integrate product introduction, diagnosis of needs, and suggested solutions. II. Mid-term development and configuration, integration and deployment phase - provides a platform for expert system that can adjust and integrate all the issues customers might face to offer the most suitable suggestions. III. Late stage maintenance and support, as well as management and operation - utilizes remote data-link to provide assessment on potential risks and even instantly sends out reminders for on-site repair or replacement of parts.

Moreover, through data collection and analytical diagnosis, suggestions for daily operations and maintenance could be provided to the customers. Currently, the goal of the SDA is to share knowledge within the company while cooperating with BGBU as planned, with help to profit as the ultimate goal.

"Currently, the team from DRC on developing biomedical applications has started utilizing this platform," said another SDA colleague Mr. Paul Lin. "In the future, the three major fields of biomedical applications for DRC, including molecular detection/diagnostics, image analytics/optimization, and vital sign evaluation can all enjoy more business opportunities created via the SDA platform."

Vision for the SDA platform - Integration of technology and practical matters

Mr. Lin Yuehui pointed out, "Delta enjoys an industry-leading capability in hardware but currently lacks experts in fields of applications, as well as software development and integration. Through cooperating with medical sectors and developing capability in software development for DRC, we are hoping to develop a platform for biomedical devices. Through verification by SDA processes, various modules of products could be assembled to offer integrated solutions that are suitable for various markets of applications."

In a short period of time, the SDA platform will be under trial run within the DRC and will be promoted to every business unit. "Like Ironman, the SDA platform will enable first-line business colleagues with a great tool to expand business opportunities," Ms. Lee said with a smile. Meanwhile, the expensive cost of manpower and time-consuming learning curve will be changed because of this platform, which further strengthens Delta's dynamics for growth.

Delta DMV machine vision system enhances efficiency in production of capacitance< Text by IABG/ DGC >

Recently, Delta installed its DMV machine vision system on a loading machine owned by a top manufacturer of capacitance production equipment in China in order to detect angle of rotation for the capacitance. Information on the angle will be sent to the super-ordination machine for correction so that efficiency in production of the capacitance and the extent of automation will be enhanced.

During the process to make capacitance, the loading machine is an indispensable part. Among this, detection using manpower not only suffers from insufficient precision detected on the product but also consumes massive amount of manpower and materials, which is also inefficient. The advantage of Delta's vision detection system is the ability to quickly build the detection system and the ease of connection with Delta's PLC super-ordination machine, saving a large amount of time. This solution is a technically-advanced vision-positioning capacitance testing system that can adapt to detection of multiple types of capacitance, which is effective in helping users realize precision manufacturing while offering a powerful guarantee.

The abbey of Santa Maria Incoronata in Italy incorporates Delta's rooftop PV system< Text by Eric Thorsrud/ Delta Italy >

In the region of Puglia, Italy about 13 km southeast of the city of Foggia lies a religious complex consisting of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Incoronata, 2 dormitory buildings, and an abbey. In 2012, the religious organization decided to pursue a substantial annual reduction in their energy bill with the addition of a solar PV system.

The first step for PM Italia Energy in this project was to perform an energy audit. A 160 kWp PV system was determined to be the best fit for the abbey after the audit was completed. Delta Italy was appointed by PM Italia Energy to serve as the EPC contractor for the project.

Delta studied the project and specified 8 Delta SOLIVIA 20 TL inverters to be installed in the system due to the inverters high max efficiency of 98%, high product reliability and 2 MPP trackers. After installation of the PV plant at the abbey of Santa Maria, the customer is benefitting from FIT remuneration for the electricity fed back to the grid helping to pay back the system costs. The abbey is able to reduce their annual energy bill by self-consumption of the energy generated by the PV system. The system provides an annual energy production of 183,202 kWh. Besides the energy savings, the system has environmental benefits as well with a calculated annual savings of 97,280 kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

Delta's electric front-maintained LCD splice screen solution helps enhance rate of usage for the meeting room space

Delta's combined DLP and LCD large screen installed on central control room at Zhonghao Chemical Industrial< Text by DGC >

Zhonghao Chemical Industrial, a firm invested on transformation from chemical coal processing by Kailuan Group, which is one of the world's top 500 enterprises, is recently planning to install a digital instrument wall display system on one wall with a length of 48 meters and height of 8 meters in its newly-built central control room. The system is made up by a DLP large splice screen and a LCD splice display with one industrial LED display and one central control set. This display wall will gather sources of signals from all plants in the park for overall monitoring display.

During the construction, DGC offered a design proposal for a combined DLP and LCD splice display system that consists of a 80-inch LED-sourced DLP large splice screen with 2 lines x 19 rows in the middle and a 55-inch narrow-edged LCD splice display with 3 lines x 3 rows on two sides, which took multiple factors into consideration, such as space and structure for the environment of the building at the site, planning for layout of operator seats, environment of illumination for the lights, etc. It followed ergonomic principles and employed a screen with low-reflection and wide-angle, as well as a curved splice angle designed scientifically, which is suitable for monitoring for all personnel on the operator seats and will not cause vision fatigue.

For this project, a full set of high-definition devices was selected for the display wall while a class A high-quality LCD panel was used on the LW-5588 series liquid crystal units with a narrow-edged seamless splice design and a physical splice seam of 5.3 mm, which had a lead in industry. Signal processing for the DVS series DLP display unit and VisionCON image splice controller all feature digital design with signals connected via full DVI transmission, so that the entire transmission process for the image would be digital to realize an image display with high resolution and realistic colors.

Delta's patented electric front-maintained LCD screen solution successfully installed in a military hospital in China< Text by Marketing Communication Department/ DGC >

Recently, Delta Greentech (China) utilized Delta's patented technology in electric front-maintained LCD splice screen solution to offer a large splice screen system at a narrow space in a military hospital in China. The entire system featured a 55-inch liquid crystal display unit with 3 lines and 6 rows. The technology helped save space for the rear maintenance passage way for users, maximizing rate of usage for meeting room space.

Currently in the market of LCD splicing display, the "front maintenance" was mostly "manual" and, to ensure that the unit screen could be pulled out for displaying during adjustment and maintenance of screen, proposals for the splice screen offered by the manufacturers required that in addition to sufficient pull-out space to be left, space for thickness of the pick on the screens on the left and right have to be reserved. Delta's electric front maintenance proposal enables control for the advanced stepping motor inside the control box via WiFi connections on Android-based tablets or cellphones. Flatness of the entire splice screen could be adjusted with precision. No matter in key areas such as precision of seam butting, efficiency of heat dissipation, or later maintenance, this enjoys better advantage than rear maintenance and manual front maintenance technology.

Strategic transformation to build a service-oriented IT environmentSpecial interview with Delta IT Officer Mr. James Ju< Text by Brand Management Office >

With respect to four mega trends: Cloud, Analytics, Mobility, and Social Networks, business development in the future is changing dramatically as a result. At this critical point, Delta's Information Technology (IT) team came forward from behind the scene to help build a service-oriented IT technology, helping Delta transform and enhance. We interviewed Chief IT Officer Mr. James Ju who will give you an overview on the advanced IT environment of the next stage.

Transformation - A new challenge to the IT team

"We need to change our concepts and reposition ourselves from the previous role of assistants," said Delta's Chief IT Officer Mr. James Ju since the start, with a mild but firm tone pointing out positioning for the department. In recent two years, Delta has been gradually adding in more force for its transformation, with the previous mode of business based on customization of products soon undergoing changes. The process of transformation will cause huge impact on its business development and processes. In the past, we could intervene with more manpower to gradually adopt with the transformation. However, the whole trend of the market is forcing us to make changes faster. "Logistics move out before troops. Mindset and concepts need to change. Everybody should be ahead of the business processes," Mr. Ju further stated.

Advancement in information technology moves in a very rapid pace. "In the past, the IT department's regular business was to fulfill requests. When there were needs from users, we provided application services or 'linked services' , helping to introduce the system module, such as SAP, ERP, PLM, CRM, etc. Of course, many more of what we offered is 'technical support' to ensure smooth operation of IT hardware and devices for the company. However, in the foreseeable future, outlooks of the IT environment will be reshaped," said Mr. Ju, with more than 30 years of experience in IT industries.

Four mega trends to reshape future IT environment

There are several trends we have to pay attention to, as brought up by Mr. Ju. He made them into an acronym of "CAMS" for ease of remembering, with C representing cloud services, A for analytics, M for mobility, and S for social networks. Mr. Ju elaborated more on influences and implications brought to Delta's business processes by these four trends.

There are several interpretations of cloud services. However, everybody agrees it is the key to swift deployment for an IT environment. In the past, we'd need to set up one set of IT environment after another at each point of business. However, through the cloud services, a complete IT environment will be quickly deployed in the future within a short amount of time.

The mobile platform is propelled by the powerful cloud service and greatly enhances mobility of personnel during the process as there is no restriction on location. Business activities could be conducted to manage actions or make decisions. "Anytime and Anywhere" is the best way to put it.

Whereas, social network has changed the design of organization, so that a project could be co-worked on without the need for compromises experienced by physical teams, as they can be replaced with virtual teams. Meanwhile, experts from every field could be dispatched to provide suitable consultation services. Finally, data analytics offers an in-depth view on trends. From structured to unstructured data, the advanced data analytic tool enables us to foresee potential issues that will be encountered during the life cycle of the service while responding to trends yet to be formed.

Switch from a role of assistant to secondary attacker

These four trends posed to be quite a major demand and challenge for the IT environment. Of course, the ability to respond to these trends and build a suitable IT environment will be beneficial to Delta's business development or transformation in the future. Thus, under leadership of Mr. Ju and other managers, the IT team subsequently devoted a large amount of resource and efforts for network infrastructure, end-user devices, and cloud platforms. It planned to seek further cooperation with Delta Research Center in integrating analytic tools into the IT environment. During Delta's transformation, the team is adjusting its positioning by switching its role from assistant to secondary attacker. It might even turn into one of the main attackers after 5-10 years.

"An IT team that mainly assists with business processes is only the first stage," Mr. Ju further explained. "Next, we are expecting to move into a service-centric second stage that is based on information infrastructure. Then, we will seek further cooperation with business units to set up the information technology that facilitate the development of business (e.g. remote monitoring of devices, platform for repair services, etc.), so that the IT environment can also become a value-adding service, making the whole solution more valuable."

"Of course, after some time, once Delta is transformed into a service provider, the IT environment (software platform) and system products (hardware solution) will be better integrated. Our soft power will become source of revenues. Take one example. Delta's future components, product, and system might all be embedded with information technology, like the future environment depicted by the IOT technology. The benefits brought by such a trend will be like the supplier for Royce Rice engine on Malaysian Airline planes. After the crash of flight MH370, this supplier was the first one to provide crucial decision-making information. It was because their products had a full tracking system that could send out warnings before any issue is discovered. Take a moment and think. If we were able to improve this feature to send out warnings prior to the incident, more lives could be saved. This was in fact the best example of the IT environment being utilized by hardware suppliers to greatly improve overall value of services."

Based on Industry 4.0, moving from manufacturing to smart manufacturing

After revealing the blueprint for the next stage of enterprise transformation and business development, Mr. Ju introduced another important plan for the IT team, which is to strengthen Delta's capability in manufacturing and move toward smart manufacturing.

Industry 4.0 is a whole-new concept proposed by EU at 2011 Hannover Messe. Starting from the full life cycle of the product, it is combined with digital technology and smart production

equipment to transform future manufacturing into "smart"manufacturing. Through continuous enhancement, Delta has acquired a capability in manufacturing it can be proud of after 40 years of accumulation. Its growth in business that has continued for several years is the best proof. Mr. Ju expects to help enhance Delta's core manufacturing capability in 5-10 years.

"To know how to do it, we need to first know that the vision provided by Industry 4.0 is different from that of the past," said Mr. Ju with smiles. Industry 4.0 emphasizes on providing the most complete service to customers during the product's entire life cycle. In the past, contact with customers ended after having produced and delivered the products. Nowadays, after-sale repairs and services have to be taken into account during the stage of design and the process of production manufacturing. Even before encountering issues, warnings would be provided in advance.

Implement in stages and sketch for next-stage developments

"Take auto industry as an example, flexible adjustment of processes to achieve mixed-line production was almost impossible. However, with smart production equipment and more powerful computing capability, the production equipment can determine steps along the process on its own, as well as what needs to be increased and decreased, in order to easily achieve a mixed-line production. Therefore, changes for the market or customers could be reflected and production could be completed efficiently."

What are the basic tasks that Delta needs to complete first? Mr. Ju thinks that update for production equipment at the bottom-most level (with bi-directional communication interface), mid-level MES system, upper-level PLM/ERP system, and even visualized presentation of management-level decisions all need further enhancements. "This task requires that all staffs change concepts and work together. Now, the IT team is gradually promoting this concept," said Mr. Ju firmly. "We are glad that in the initial stage we have the IABG team, Operation Enhancement Division, and production sites joining our efforts. The IT team is planning for steps of promotion. Of course, once Delta Research Center joins in the future, more IOT application tools will be introduced, which would be very beneficial."

Serving Delta for 15 years with 30 years of experience in IT industry, Mr. Ju studied EE in National Taipei University of Technology and went to the graduate program for IT engineering in National Taiwan University, arming him with both hard and soft skills. After revealing about the internal (manufacturing as the core) and external (expansion of business) challenges, as well as blueprint for development, for Delta's IT infrastructure, colleagues from all over the world are looking forward to the vision for Delta's development in the next stage.

Differentiation on visual creations – Product identity guidelines formally underway for industrial automation products< Text by IABG >

At the end of last year, the Brand News Bi-monthly covered a Product Identity (PI) project initiated by the IABG, hoping to accumulate and enhance image and values of the brand by letting users learn more about products from Delta. After about a year of hard work, IABG's industrial design team completed the project with specific guidelines. In the "Brand Academy" of this issue, we will share about outcomes of their hard work.

Elements of product design are inferred from creative processes to develop concept

By studying and analyzing characteristics, advantage, and shortcomings of products designed by major competitors in the market for industrial automation, the IABG design team learned about use of the main corporate color on its own products with the same lines and look that are applied on different models, which not only makes the products more family-based and lasting but also strengthens links between the products and the brand, successfully making appeals of the brand more salient while establishing an identity for the product.

By inviting colleagues from the R&D, business development, marketing, and customer service departments to participate in lively and fun brainstorm activities for development of concepts, the IABG design team managed to guide the colleagues to express associations of imagery between the image of the corporation and application of the products. Corresponding adjectives and elements of looks and features were abstracted by substantiating those virtual imageries via pictures.

Currently, the IABG features an extensive line of products, including motors and drives, power quality solutions, industrial motion solutions, industrial control solutions, sensors, and etc., all with different purposes of usage and environments for applications. The industrial design team performed analysis on elements of forms and features for industrial automation products from Delta. Through processes of concept development, discussions, analysis, summarization, etc., the adjectives and corresponding looks and features that are most important during the stage of product design would be gathered and selected. Through filtering and narrowing, the lasting elements of design would then be found from among the currently-available products.

Stage-based approaches to enhance product identity

Match and applications of colors can strengthen users' connections with the brand. To adapt to demands from dirt and high temperature in the adverse industrial operating environment, the colors for IABG products have all been switched from earlier "white" case color to the more settled "Delta dark gray" case color. However, some products, such as robotic arms, were recommended for bright and noticeable white body complemented by Delta's blue enterprise color to enhance safety and visibility during operations. Meanwhile, for the design of its plates, identical metallic colors were used to match and change with the look of the machines, which not only offers ease for identification of products but also helps to shape up an intuitive link inside the users' minds to the brand. On the other hand, under consideration of maximal management and application for the stock of materials, items of materials and craft of surface processing used for each component of the product have all been specified to achieve advantages, such as uniform specifications, high compatibility, and lower cost.

Focused on handling of details to achieve a fine quality

For overall quality and aesthetic of the product reflected, in addition to deduction for the overall lines and look, depiction of details for the product is also one of the important tasks to amaze users and add values to the product. For every line of products in the future, the industrial design team has put in deeper thoughts on them, so that they would have consistent images and styles, as well as clearly-defined rules to match and apply enterprise logo and fonts on product names between different types of products. Metal plates with metallic shines will be used for the enterprise logo to enhance for an overall refined feeling. For plates on some models that require considerations for ease of operation and water resistance, the same metallic colors will be used for the matching and switching along with the fonts defined. The buttons will feature the looks and shapes of "rectangle" and "long oval" with increased size that make these buttons simple and easy to operate, which in turn makes the product more easily identifiable. Also individually specified are colors and styles for the icons and warning symbols printed on the case, as well as the fonts for the descriptive text on the case and how they are used.

The software interface features user-friendliness with white and blue background color and simple, clear intuitive icons. This design gives a fresh, bright and friendly impression to users and makes the whole series of software more identifiable.

In addition to figuring out a direction for designing the look of its next-generation products, the industrial design team from IABG has come out with a specification on design for product identity that is systematic, planned, and can be put into actual practices to enforce common elements of design between the products. With an intuitive way to convey the positioning of the brand that is high-precision, high-speed, and high-efficiency, this will help generate recognition and identification of the brand by the users. The accumulation of positive views from users on Delta products will eventually shape up the image of the products in the market and from the users' minds.

Microgrids will change the face of Asia Pacific grid infrastructureOver the last ten years, advancements in renewable energy technologies and energy storage systems (ESS) have made microgrids more greener and sustainable. But construction of microgrid comes with a huge price tag; the capital cost of installation $/Watt of a microgrid can range from 3.0-8.0 $/Watts. It is also dependent on various factors such as land acquisition costs, and labor. Therefore, supportive policies and incentives have been announced by the governments in the region to help the adoption of microgrids in the private sector as well. These include renewable energy subsidies, tax subsidies, feed in tariff policy, etc.

According to Frost & Sullivan, almost every country in the region has set a renewable energy target, and the easier way of achieving it is through distributed energy generation and microgrids. Rooftop solar PV installations in the residential sector have been growing in Australia, Japan and The Philippines. Solar PV plants are the major source of power in microgrids in the region. Around 69% of the total microgrid capacity in 2013 was generated using solar PV, while biomass constituted 20%.

The requirement of microgrids varies by country within the Asia Pacific region. The past two years witnessed the rise of several grid-connected microgrids which powered commercial complexes where a renewable energy source is connected to an ESS, and the stored energy was used for peak shaving purposes. Besides, with the evolution of smart Electric vehicle (EV) charging, microgrids can utilize the stored energy in EV or peak shaving applications etc. "The market would start gaining traction from 2016, it will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 33.3% between 2013 and 2020." said Frost & Sullivan.

DEF takes the initiative in environmental education with a cultural and creative crossover exhibition - "Run for Water, Water for Run" < Text by Delta Electronics Foundation >

Do you know that people in Taiwan and Ethiopia are 23 steps and 23 kilometers, respectively, away from a glass of clean drinking water, and that 780 million people worldwide are still left without access to clean water supplies, which in turn results in 6 to 8 million deaths every year?

A water crisis triggered by global warming

Few people know Taiwan, where water is almost always readily available, is the world's 18th most drought-prone region with its per capita water consumption far exceeding the United Nations standard. A Taiwanese study on global climate change and warming also predicts intensification and concentration of torrential rains island-wide, complicated by a rising drought frequency. In 2014, Taiwan registered its first typhoon-free August in more than six decades, suggesting an increase in drought and flood severity as weather extremities intensify in both dry and wet seasons.

A long-time advocate for campaigns on climate change and environmental education, Delta Electronics Foundation (DEF) has recently launched the "Run for Water, Water for Run" exhibition in Taipei. The exhibition, centered on the themes of water supplies and environmental education, will hopefully encourage wise water use by raising awareness of - and uncovering the truth about - how global warming changes our hydrologic cycle with an immense impact and how Taiwan is short of water.

Bruce Cheng, founder of Delta and chairman of DEF, mentioned in the exhibition opening speech that water scarcity dealt a solid blow to his company: Delta's Taoyuan plant used to suffer from dwindled water supply after each typhoon because the post-flood water quality was too poor for factory operations. Such an unpleasant experience, he said, prompted Delta to make water efficiency a top priority for its Taoyuan Technology Center project, where all green spaces are now watered and all toilets flushed using the 5,776-ton-per-year recycled rainwater. The Wujiang, China plant of Delta also recycles up to 17,138 tons of water from air-conditioners and cooling water tanks each year, equaling the volume of nine standard-size swimming pools.

Run for Water, Water for Run

As its title "Run for Water, Water for Run" indicates, the exhibition not only raises awareness of water footprint, a scientific, statistical way to measure water use, but also evokes the image of human dependence on water supplies, as evidenced by a slideshow of shocking photos taken by Taiwanese ultra-marathoner Kevin Lin during his grueling desert race. With Delta's advanced display solution, the audience enjoyed the slide show on a 350-inch screen as Lin shared touching stories about the water-strapped desert.

The exhibition offers creative water-saving tips for everyday family lives as well as practices or policies implemented by governments worldwide. For example, the "Wim's Bathroom" demonstrates how Wim Chang, Deputy Executive Director of DEF, uses water recycled from the washing machine to flush his toilet and keep his bimonthly water bill (for a household of four) down at the NT$45 level, which is 88% lower than Taipei City's average.

A goodbye to summer - an around-the-island trip to show friendliness to the environment< Text by Shalom Hung/ Brand Management Office >

My kid just turned into a newcomer to elementary school after this summer! When he was still in kindergarten, the school introduced Taiwan's national parks with a mnemonic phrase taught by teachers that goes like "ken-kin-yu-tai-dong-ta-yang-shei" (for Kenting, Kinmen, Yushan, Taijiang, Dongsha, Taroko, Yangmingshan, and Shei-pa National Parks). He often asks me about geographic location of these national parks. Thus, we decided to have an around-the-island trip for the whole family this summer, so that he would get an actual feeling for relative location of every city and tourism spots.

Since I have absorbed substantial knowledge on protection of environment at Delta, I wanted to convey to my kids on how to exercise environment-friendliness through this trip. A few check points:

Eating - Prepare our own utensils and select local food. Try to eat at restaurants for every meal instead of taking out to avoid adding up the amount of trashes.

Living - Choose an environment-friendly hotel that does not provide showering and hygiene accessories.

Transportation - Plan the trip in detail before departure to avoid getting lost and wasting gas.

Taiwan is surrounded by seas. Opening a map and pointing out rough sketch of Taiwan, we explained to our kids that we are on the outermost line when driving ahead along the coastline. The first stop was Chiayi. To see the sunrise in Mt. Ali, we woke the kids up at 4 in the morning, but they seemed not interested in the sunrise. My husband and I had to carry each one sleepy kid weighing 20 kg and rushed to the train station. There were no seats for us on the

train, as it was already crowded. We continued to hold the kids all the way to Mt. Zhushan, where we finally got to see the beautiful sunrise and the sea of cloud that changed colors as the sun gradually rose, which was truly amazing.

The around-the-island trip arrived at the coastline in Southern Taiwan. Running on the beach to chase tidal waves was the happiest moment for the two kids when they recall nowadays. From Kenting along the eastern coastline to Taitung and Hualien, we witnessed the uniqueness of these coastal areas, from small-shell sand beaches in Kenting, coral reef sand beaches in Beinan, Taitung, to the pebble sand beaches in Hualien. Even though we read about them in textbook during our student time, it was until we actually visited those places we would be able to experience their uniqueness. However, in spite of their beauty, we saw the same problem of trashes filling these places. Thus, we took our kids to pick up trashes so they would learn to love their beautiful homeland.

Even though it is frustrating to see trashes all over, there were still many shops whose owners were environment-aware and have been putting that awareness into their operations. One shop in Fenqihu, Chiayi, has been practicing environment-friendliness by not offering take outs, which was also for the sake of quality. Also, the hotel we chose does not offer showering and hygiene accessories but encourages guests to bring their own to reduce waste of resource.

During this trip, we always brought small bags with us to carry trashes, which also influenced the two kids. Along the way, a kind uncle gave all the plastic bottles he had to my son and gave him 100 NT Dollars to praise and encourage his acts of good will, becoming the most pleasant memory.

Delta donates to assist with reconstruction for Kaohsiung gas pipe explosion and Yunnan earthquakes

< Text by Pamela Huang/ DEF, Sophia Zhou/ Delta Corporate Communications >

On July 31, an incident of gas pipe explosion took place in Kaohsiung City, after which Bruce Cheng, Chairman of Delta Electronics Foundation (DEF), instructed to offer relief for the victims that also take into considerations long-term safety of the whole country in the future. The final decision was to provide aid that is worth of 20 million NT Dollars, including donation of a device worth of 15 million NT Dollars that can instantly detect toxic chemicals to Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and donation

of the remaining 5 million NT Dollars to Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation for assistance in mental and physical rehabilitation to the victims who suffered from burn injuries.

DEF considered the hardship for the victims that, in addition to damages to their properties, the future rehabilitation for the bodily and mental wounds, as well as training for victims' family members to help with aftercare and home living, were important but a long way to go for full rehabilitation. Thus, 5 million NT Dollars in cash was offered to Sunshine Foundation so that they could consolidate social workers, rehabilitation, and psychiatry specialists to assist with subsequent physical and mental rehabilitation for those victims with burn injuries. This cooperation was well-received by Delta's employees, with more than 2.3 million NT Dollars voluntarily donated from employees in Taiwan and China.

In addition, a Richter-scale 6.5 earthquake took place in Ludian of Yunnan, China, after which Delta also deployed 5 million RMB to assist with post-disaster reconstruction at the disaster zone of Ludian county, Zhaotong city. The donated money will be used on school buildings that were damaged during the earthquake and need to be rebuilt. Hoping to incorporate the ideal of environmental protection, the schools would be rebuilt with safe and comfortable green buildings.

Delta donated to rebuild the Yangjiazheng Delta Sunshine Elementary School in the Mianyang disaster zone in Sichuan Province from the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. In addition to its quake-resisting strength that complies with the highest local standard, it was also the first green building in the disaster zone that the entire school would be based on. After the 2013 earthquake in Ya-an, Sichuan, Delta employed its experience in building green buildings and donated to rebuild Delta Sunshine Elementary School in Longmen township, with the construction project still ongoing.
