    Today’s Musicians

Widely known as a performer in the United States and in Europe, WILLIAM PORTER has also achieved international recognition for his skill in improvisation in a wide variety of styles, ancient and modern. He has performed at major international festivals and academies, including the North German Organ Academy, the Italian Academy of Music for the Organ, the Smarano Organ and Clavichord Academy, Organfestival Holland, the Göteborg International Organ Academy, the Dollart Festival, the Lausanne Improvisation Festival, the Festival Toulouse les Orgues, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Oregon Bach Festival, the McGill International Organ Academy, Eastman’s Improvfest, and the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists. From 2002 until 2013 he was Professor of Organ, Harpsichord, and Improvisation at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; he has also been a member of the music faculty at McGill University in Montreal, the New England Conservatory, Yale University, and Oberlin College. Now residing in Rochester, New York, he returned to the Eastman School of Music in 2015 as part-time Professor of Organ. He has recorded on historic instruments, old and new, for the Gasparo, Proprius, BMG, and Loft labels. BRIAN ARSENAULT began playing viola in third grade, because the music program of the Milford (Massachusetts) Public Schools offered lessons, and he went on to study with Roberto Diaz and Burton Fine. He was selected to perform at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for three years, earned a BM in viola performance from the New England Conservatory (where he studied counterpoint with Willam Porter), and also earned an MLIS from the Florida State University. He began playing violin in Tallahassee as a fiddler, playing traditional Irish music in sessions and with the groups Barley Thar and The Ned Devines. He has performed with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahassee Community Chorus Orchestra, and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. Brian works as a web

developer for the Center for Information Management and Educational Services at FSU, studies voice with Carla Connors, and sings bass in the St. John’s Episcopal Church adult and Compline choirs. VALERIE PREBYS ARSENAULT has two favorite musical activities: teaching the violin and playing baroque music. She is the President and Music Director of the Tallahassee Bach Parley, and she maintains a thriving studio of violin and viola students at the core of the Bach Parley String Academy. As Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida State University she directs the Baroque Ensemble (on period instruments), teaches music history, and has taught violin and directed the Irish Ensemble. She is a member of the Tallahassee Symphony and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. She studied violin at the New England Conservatory (BM), violin pedagogy and baroque violin at the Indiana University School of Music (MM, Early Music), and earned her doctorate from the Florida State University College of Music. At the Bach Parley String Academy, Arsenault uses a synthesis of Suzuki and traditional pedagogy, tailored to suit the strengths and learning styles of each student. Her approach is positive and compassionate, but also demanding, and she enjoys helping her students find creative solutions to technical and musical challenges. MIRIAM BARFIELD began studying the violin at age six with Melissa Brewer. She received her Bachelor of Music from Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Pamela Ryan, and completed a Master of Music in Viola Performance at The Boston Conservatory under Patricia McCarty.
