2 Details of the Classified Product

2.1 Description of substrate

Report Number:P101812-1000 Issue:

11

The specimen was installed on to the right hand face of the BRE Global External Cladding Test Facility. This is a multi-faced test facility constructed from low-density concrete blocks on to which the test specimen was installed.

2.2 Description of product

Trade name and specimen identification code or number: Koltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreen Insulation Board. Colour: Grey/Cream or Red Kooltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreen Insulation Board with foil finish top and bottom.

2.3 Installation of cladding System

2.3.1 Fixing Details

60mm thick Kooltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreeen Insulation Board wich were 1200x900 mm was mechanically fixed to the block work substrate. 1200mmx900mmx6mm thick cement particle boards, manufactured by UAC, were mechanically fixed at 600 mm centres to an aluminium railing system which was also mechanically fixed to the block work substrate. The cement boards provided the overcladding for the rainscreen system. A40 mm deep ventilated cavity was provided between the Kooltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreen Insulation Board and the cement particle board. Fire stopping was provided by a ventilated rainscreen barrier system, comprising of nominal 2.5 mm thick graphite based intumescent strip bonded to nominal 0.6 mm thick galvanised steel sheet, and positioned 0.5 m and 4 m above the fire chamber on both the main face and the wing face (Full manufactures details are held on file).

No other material details were supplied.

The specimen area was 8.4 mx 2.70 m on the main face and 8.4 m x1.8 m on the wing face. The panel layout is given in Figure 1.

All test materials were supplied by the sponsor. BRE were not involved in the sample selection process and therefore cannot comment upon the relationship between samples supplied for test and the product supplied to market.

2.4 Installation of Specimen

The test sponsor undertook the supply and installation of the test specimen. BRE staff undertook no supervision of this process.

4.3 Mechanical Performance

The test was terminated on the 49 minutes.

On the main face, the cement board overcladding was detached up to height of 4.00 m and to a width of 2.15 m at its widest point above the head of the fire chamber. The cement particle board was discoloured to the full height of the test sample and to a width of 2.15 m, from the internal corner, 0.5 m above the head of the fire chamber, and a width of 0.5 m, 6.4 m above the head of the fired chamber. The aluminium railing system was burnt away to a height of approximately 3.0 m above the centre line of the fire chamber an to 0.9 m to the left of the centre line.

On the wing face, the cement particle board had detached from 2.00 m (floor level) to 3.00 m above the head of the fire chamber. The panels were detached to 0.90 m from the internal corner.

On the main face, the Kooltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreen Insulation board (foil faces and insulation material) had been consumed to a height of 3.60 m above the head of the fire chamber and a width a maximum width of 1.70 m, exposing the block work substrate to the rear. The phenolic material was discoloured to full height on the centre line and around the area of the upper fire break.

On the wing face, the foil face of the Kooltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreen Insulation Board was detached and the phenolic boards partially consumed to 3.00 m above the head of the fire chamber. On no part of the wing face had the Kooltherm K15 Zero ODP Phenolic Rainscreen Insulation Board been full consumed to expose the block work substrate.

Details of this are given in the table below.
