“BRE have developed, with Kier Group, a bespoke version of the SMARTWaste Plan tool. Kier selected SMARTWaste knowing that it was based on an existing and proven system and that on-going training and backup support was available from BRE. Being web enabled means that it is easily accessible and that waste reduction best practice and ‘quick wins’ from other projects can be shared throughout the business. Since its adoption Kier has achieved a 5% increase in the amount of construction waste it reuses or recycles, and a 20% reduction in the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste it sends to landfill.”

Peter Johnson, Kier Group

SMARTWaste just got smartER

The BRE SMARTWaste family of online tools brings together everything you need to measure, target, report and reduce your company and construction site’s environmental impacts. With the BRE SMARTWaste tool users can fully prepare, implement and review their Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP). However there is now much more to SMARTWaste than just measuring and reporting waste.

SMARTWaste has now got smartER and incorporates an Environmental Reporting module. This is only available to SMARTWaste members and provides the ability to capture, monitor, target and report on onsite energy consumption (electricity, gas, and fuel use), water consumption and the procurement of certified timber.

Company and project level reporting

Furthermore smartER provides straight forward reporting at both the company and project level allowing members to track and report on overall company performance for corporate CSR and sustainability purposes, as well as the performance on a project by project basis. Reports are provided in both tabular and graphical format and can be downloaded into a spreadsheet for further analysis.

Silver membership Group and Client level reporting

Group Level – A Group Level account is suitable for any company that would like the ability to group together individual projects under separate divisions within their company. These divisions could be based by region, by project type, by business unit, or client. With a Group Level account you have the ability to separately monitor, and report on your waste, energy, water and timber use at a company level, business unit level and individual project level.

Client Level – A Client Level account is suitable for any company who rely on their contractors to produce their SWMP and want to track environmental impacts on their projects and get an overview of this data. With a Client Level account each contractor enters waste, energy, water and timber data in their own individual SMARTWaste accounts, which is then linked up to the client who can view all project data entered by their contractors to monitor performance.

There are three tiers of membership depending on your company’s requirements and budget:

– Gold from £8k per year – Silver £3.5k per year – Bronze £950 per year

Each tier provides a range of benefits and services to enable your company to get to grips with the myriad of requirements for the management and reporting of waste, energy, water and timber on your construction site; ultimately improving your performance, reducing your impacts and most importantly of all reducing your costs.

Membership also demonstrates to your clients that your company is committed to delivering best practice throughout your construction projects using the leading online environmental reporting tool in the marketplace.

Membership discounts are also available for companies who wish to sign up to longer than a one year term – please contact the SMARTWaste team for further details.

“Patton signed up to be a bronze member with the BRE’s SMARTWaste in 2010 benefiting from the additional tools the site now offers. Using SMARTWaste and smartER has revolutionised how our business manages, monitors and reports on waste, energy, water and timber used onsite. The online portal provides easy access for our clients and site based teams across the UK ensuring they have up to date waste/energy/water/timber data for their specific sites.” Liam McEvoy, Patton group

“Optimise, which is Mace’s bespoke version of SMARTWaste helps us ensure compliance and keep track of environmental business critical issues across all of our construction projects. Best practice data visualisation bullet charts help convey a rich story in little space and clearly show performance against a range of key performance indicators at project, business unit and company level. Optimise includes business unit league tables to encourage competition and improved performance, and summarised sustainability ratings quantifying the performance of each project against waste and carbon targets in financial terms for management reporting. The process is automated within the tool saving us on average about two days per month on company reporting alone.” Andrew Kinsey, MACE Group
