The case

• Rates of breast cancer in China are now as low as 12.8/100,000 women

• The Journal of the National Cancer Institute predicts that 100/100,000 of women aged 55-69 by 2021

This trend is attributed to poor diet, increased exposure to pollution, and growing use of alcohol and tobacco products

Our goalsEducationRaise awareness of the conditions and causes of breast cancer

PreventionOffer resources for prevention and early diagnosis

SupportProvide a community or support system for patients and families dealing with breast cancer

Page 4: Breast Cancer030310

Research findings

• Lack of information in rural areas on this and other healthcare issues

• BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation gives a high correlation with breast cancer sufferers

• Lifestyle and diet closely linked• Self breast exams, x-ray/digital mammography, MRI routine for identification and treatment

The challenges

• Effective strategies for dispersal of public information in rural areas

• Palatable approach to promoting healthful diet/lifestyle habits within the financial constraints of the target market

• Development of low-cost screening options and access infrastructure for rural communities

Questions for SIVA

• What regulatory barriers do we face in developing novel medical devices for rural populations?

• What are current methods for large public information campaigns? What is the cheapest and most surefire way of reaching people in rural areas?

• What is the power of evoking filial piety to solicit community contributions for local healthcare solutions?

• To what degree is breast cancer, or healthcare in general, viewed as a community burden/concern?
